My cholesterol levels were the lowest level of concern when I was prescribed Atorvastatin; I reduced my fat intake which, after living most of my life in logging camps where rigorous outdoor work in the cold requires high caloric intake daily-and a lot of fatty foods-it was a big change for me. Subsequently I had a stent emplacement in a secondary coronary vessel and the doctor performing it said my other blood vessels were entirely clear and unobstructed-“to last you the rest of your life” (I was about 60 years old at the time). But I began to have severe muscle pain problems after about half a year of taking 40mg of Atorvastatin daily. I decided to cut the dose in half and inform my doctor-at which time I asked him why I was taking statins when I’d changed a very fatty diet and my coronary vessels were seen to be clear of cholesterol build-up. I asked to have my cholesterol levels checked again and they were well below the level of concern. But my doctor insisted I continue taking it at a half-dose-I have a heart with co-mordancy due to COPD/emphysema. Unfortunately the dose reduction didn’t eliminate muscle pain-in fact, it continued to get worse. So the doctor (the cardiologist) switched me to 20mg of Simvastatin. That helped somewhat, but the muscle pain kept getting worse (just at a slower rate). It became intolerable (and I take opioids for spinal injuries-have for 20 years-but it didn’t cover the muscle pain at all and I don’t want to increase it anyway). The solution, finally, has been to take what my GP calls a “statin holiday” (a play on words from “stat” or “statuary holiday”): an eight to twelve week period of no statin-until the pain has gone away completely for a few weeks; then I resume the 20mg Simvastatin until the pain gets intolerable again-which seems about three or four months. I suppose it’s better than not taking it at all, but if there was no other recourse, I’m afraid I would elect not to take it at all. The pain is not worth the supposed benefit-especially as my cholesterol levels are low now.

Geoffrey, thank you for sharing your experience for other viewers. It is difficult for both prescriber and patient alike, as the prescriber wants to follow best practices and guidelines and you have to deal with the side effects.Drug holidays are a possible solution. Not sure if you tried Co-enzyme Q10 to mitigate the the side effects of the Statin.Ultimately, its is a shared decision with you and your Doctor weighing in the benefits vs risks with your unique medical history.

Think Your Health : thnx for getting back. Yes, it’s important to do any of this in conjunction with one’s doctor(s), as I have done. They’re always relieved whenever I tell them that I’m back “on” statin again after a short ‘holiday’ and haven’t simply abandoned it-which, I suspect, a lot of people do (it’s as easy as google to find that there’s an extraordinary amount of controversy about stains, and that might serve as a rationalization to quit taking it altogether because of side effects). My doctors have all recommended Co-enzyme 100 and of course I take it daily. If it helps (perhaps a little obscure to me, what with other condition), I’m all for it: Co-enzyme doesn’t come with a long list of side effects.) Thnx again.

As a chronic case manager- I found this very helpful. Some patients aren’t aware that their complaints may actually be side effects from their current medications. It’s very important especially when multiple pharmacies and/or multiple doctors are involved that we consider the possibility of a drug/drug interaction as well. I know of at least two cases where such a thing has occurred with my patients- but I caught before the mail order pharmacy was able to fill the order.

Try looking online for information on statins . They are not what you think. Drs are told they must prescribe these meds. They do not reduce cardiovascular events by 30% like you are told. It’s more like 1% if that. Big pharma is making billions on these destructive meds. Do your own research people!!

Was on 80mg a day after bypass surgery. Could not remember things, was confused, knew something was wrong but thought it was a side effect of the coronary bypass surgery. Went to my doc for a respiratory illness, she decided that 80mg was too much, my lipids were very good and went down to 40mg a day. Several weeks later I realized that my memory was improved and I wasn't fogged out all the time. I started cutting the 40mg in half and next visit my lipids were still good. I told the doc and she prescribed 20's. I immediately started cutting those in half. When the next couple of labs showed my chloresterol was still good, I told the doc about cutting the 20's in half and my memory had greatly improved and wasn't nearly as befuddled as before and I'm just on 10mgs a day now.

I’ve been on atorvastatin for about 20 years due to cholesterol being hereditary. Without it my numbers would skyrocket. I haven’t suffered any side effects that I can tell and I’d say it’s probably saved my life. I for one would swear by its use. Also, I’m NOT over weight and I exercise.

As a runner who puts in over 2,000 miles every year for the past decade and lift weights 3 times a week, I was getting bad muscle pains in my legs and whole body after workouts and running. I didn’t know the side effects as being muscle pains until after so many running injuries in my leg muscles. I thought because I turned over 51 years old , it was Father Time coming after me. Then after watching KZfaq videos by Dr Berg, I realize it was the Atrovastatin. My marathon was not easy and my legs cramped up about 10km earlier than it normally would for distance I run.

No no no. There are ZERO benefits to taking a Statin drug. If lowering your cholesterol is your aim than try Red Rice Yeast instead. No risk of dementia or Alzheimer’s which is what will happen if you take it for about 5 years. There is a 1 to 1 relationship between Statin drugs and the development of Alzheimer’s as it robs your brain of the fats it needs each day to heal itself. You as a man also face the dangers of it eating your joints away thus requiring joint replacement.

If you hava muscle pain following statin use, you should get a check done for CPK level. Statins tend to raise teh CPK level and a higher CPk level can cause your muscles to degrade or sort of like dissolve in layman's terms. Sometimes the CPK level can also be due to below normal Vit D. Any time you have a muscle pain have the CPK level checked not very many physicians do it but i learned about it from mine. Some tiimes a differrent cholestrol lowering drug will not affect the CPK. Remembe that a higher elevated level of CPK canaffect the Hear muscle too. Just what i learned from my experience with cholestrom med use.Feel free to share your experience

I was on Atorvastatin for 2 years at 80mg daily. I have Diabetes Type 2 and high cholesterol. The drug really lowered my bad cholesterol levels; however I developed severe muscle pain in my legs and had to stop taking it. I am now going the "natural" route recently taking Cholestipol and Red Yeast Rice. I was told it takes longer to show a reduction in high cholesterol levels but I am willing to bear with it until it shows reduction progress. I will never take a prescription statin again. I am also starting Co-Enzyme Q10 as well. The Cholestipol tends to constipate but I am drinking a lot of water and eating prunes to combat it.

I was prescribed Atorvastatin in July of this year. My cholesterol wasn't particularly high so I don't know what my doctor was trying to accomplish. After taking medicine for about 8 weeks a blood test revealed my blood sugar had risen 40 points to about 160. Shortly afterwards I developed joint pain in my hips (at the time I was walking about 5 miles daily or cycling 25 miles for excercise). After taking my normal walk one day I began to cough uncontrollably. I could feel my sinuses draining into my lungs. Joint pain also increased significantly. At the beginning of November I began to suspect the Atorvastatin was the cause. I stopped using the drug and contacted my doctor. Because of Covid my doctor was only doing virtual appointments so I was unable to have him actually examine me. The cough worsened and a chest X-ray revealed bronchitis which was treated with mild antibiotics. I felt somewhat better however joint pain was increasing to the point where I had trouble getting out of bed and moving around. Eventually the cough came back, worsened, and I was diagnosed with pneumonia . I'm recovering from the pneumonia and have an appointment to see a rheumatologist to see if thr joint pain is permanent or can be reversed. Atorvastatin quite literally ruined my health. I cannot walk the distances I used to and I struggle with the urge to cough constantly. Perhaps not life threatening side effects, but centainly life changing side effects.

"After taking medicine for about 8 weeks a blood test revealed my blood sugar had risen" Same here. This is what they never tell you. I was placed on Atorvastatin with a barely above average cholesterol reading. I was already on Lisinopril for my blood pressure (which was also under control and doing fine) but I was also placed on a second blood pressure medication (Amlodipine) at the same time as Atorvastatin. My blood sugar skyrocketed after being put on these unnecessary meds. Health care "professionals" NEVER explain how these drugs can cause your blood glucose to spike... sending you into pre-diabetes or full blown Type 2 diabetes where you otherwise would have no reason to. I stopped taking both of those meds and my blood sugars have been slowly but steadily heading back to normal.

I have taken Atorvastatin for many years, most recently taking 40mg every other day. The Rx was from my cardiologist. Recently I have noticed some memory problems. I reported the memory problems to my internist during a wellness exam. The internist speculated that the problems could be side effects of the Atorvastatin and recommended that I discontinue taking it for three weeks as a test. I did so, and by three weeks the memory problems seem to have disappeared. I reported this to my cardiologist and he has discontinued the Atorvastatin until next month to establish a new baseline of cholesterol without the drug and will go from there. Another thing I'd like to add is statins also cause cataracts. I went to the opthalmologist two weeks ago and discovered I have cataracts in both eyes but they are too small for surgery. Cataracts have to be a certain size before insurance will pay for the surgery. I attribute these cataracts to the taking of atorvastatin. Hopefully getting off the poison my cataracts won't grow any bigger. I'm infuriated because I never wanted pills and only took them because my doctor insisted. These pills destroyed my quality of life. People of the world need to stand up and sue the drug companies and the doctors who push these poisonous pills.

My Husband had been taken Atorvastatin for nearly 20 years. He had no real side effects until about 3 years ago when he developed joint pain in one knee. This gradually deteriorated and spread to both legs causing him to need a stick for support when walking. We struggled to get him a GP appointment because it was during the pandemic, but when we did the Doctor did not seem too concerned and at no point mentioned the use of Statins. My Husband continued to deteriorate, with terrible pain in walking, lethargy and fatigue. He spent time in Hospital with kidney problems, he had urine retention and had a stent fitted in his kidney. He was in and out of Hospital last year when in August he became unable to move without assistance and was admitted for the last time. He died in September. I now have found out that a lot of his symptoms were probably caused by the use of Statins. Were the GP and Hospital negligent?

I thought that was strange nor could I find any medical articles to support that statement. However, I moved Bystolic 10mg and while its more expensive, the results were great by putting my BP in normal range. Atvorstatin never really got my BP in range. I'm a blk male, age 45, was 40yrs old then, avg BP was 155/80. After bystolic i see avg 135/75, resting HR tends to be around 62bpm.

Thank you Doctor for the valuable information. Over twelve years ago, I was assessed as having high cholesterol and was prescribed statin based drug. Within about a year I began feel the loss of memory and unbelievable muscle pain. Normal pain killers didn’t work and so my doctor prescribed pain medications and sleeping pills. Doctor also tried many different cholesterol tablets but of no avail. This went on for about 4-5 years. Finally I took a decision to go against my doctor and did not to take any cholesterol medications. He didn’t know about my decision. I changed my diet and increased the exercises. I do blood tests about twice a year and the cholesterol readings show slightly above the margins. My doctor seems to be not alarmed. But the muscle pain has not gone away. It’s about 80% of what it was. My memory is still not great.

Good presentation. I was an active, crazy active cyclist when I was prescribed stati (I think Simvistatin), I let the fear of 'muscle pains' (most likely from 300mi/week of riding) get to me so I stopped. I listened to a podcast recently that suggested that they studied real pains to suggested pains and surmised that most people overreacted or thought the pains were a side effect. A few years later and cholesterol started creeping up again so now I'm on Atorvastatin, no sides, but won't know benefits until tested. It hasn't helped ED as I hoped (first time it did).

I have COPD and so breathlessness isn't unusual. As COPD causes a gradual but progressive decline in lung function, it isn't always obvious if statins can make breathlessness worse and yet remain unrecognised as an additional factor because of the nature of COPD itself.

I also have COPD-about 40% lung function. I hadn’t heard that statins have any effect of the lungs, but I’ma gonna check it out now! I must say, I haven’t noticed any correlation but of course, with a heart condition on top of everything, plus old age (I’m 67), it’s awfully hard to discern. But I do take “statin holidays” (about 2 or 3 weeks off every three to four months-which seems to temporarily solve my muscle-pain problem almost instantly, so good correlation there, at least). I also keep copious daily notes (a habit from when I used to work) so I’m gonna keep this in mind, see if I can test it in any conclusive way, all other things considered. Thnx!

I have an arterial blockage in one leg at about 74. I kept on doing my activities, mountain biking, kayaking, and working a physical job, though I couldn't walk very far. The doctor put me on 40mg of Atorvastatin a day and one cartia tablet. I'm now 80 and still doing my sports activities, though retired now. I've noticed in the last two years that I do less and get tired more. I have aches and pains but I think after a lifetime of hard manual work and a long long list of physical injuries starting at aged 6 being run over by a taxi to breaking 3 ribs and my scapular 2 years ago going off a drop. I think it's natural as you get older to wear out and have all those aches and pains. Also as you age you look back more and think too much about the past and the thing you did or didn't do and family matters, so sometimes not sleeping well is to be expected. What I'm saying is, how can you tell if it's a natural part of aging or it's the effects of the statin

Seriously? I am 78, fit, energetic and eat well. short story. Open heart surgery and a 50% blocked artery. Got over the surgery well and put on a statin ' to be safe'. One month later i feel like i am dying. Complete blood check and I am. Liver and kidneys going down fast. My local GP wants me to keep taking the statins but I say no. It is the only change in my living behaviour. 3 months and feeling better so thought i would given them another try. lower dosage and 1 month later not feeling good so stop and demand blood checks. Same story - body dying. Stay of statins for around 7 months this time and feeling good again. Surely the statins weren't so bad so give then a try again. 2 Weeks and I can feeling the body going down again, so stop. No more statins. Once again bloods showed the body negative reaction. Now a year later I finally feel 'normal' again both in body and mind! That's how you tell if it is nature or the chemical. By the way they did lower my cholesterol, however it has never been above recommended levels; although in the last 2 years they have kept dropping the recommended level so it extrapolates that everyone will soon have 'high' cholesterol!

I’m 68 and was prescribed statins around 10 years ago. I quickly reduced down from 20 mg to 10mg. I can’t say I’ve noticed any particular side effects. I can comfortably walk around 10 miles and most days, I walk or dance. And if the music is good, I can still dance all night. I eat fish and vegetables, but mostly plant base. Ive concluded that three meals a day is totally unnecessary, so apart from water or a fresh juice, I don’t eat until 1pm. That will be fruits or a salad or a mixed and three to 4 hours later, I have a main meal of vegetables or fish and vegetables or a soup etc. Our bodies gives us lots of signals of what it needs. We just need to learn to listen. Apart from whatever I get through my meals, I do not take a single vitamin of any description. I would say if at all possible, try to eat good wholesome food. It’s the key to good health. It was totally my previous diet that caused me to have elevated cholesterol is under 4 and was under 4 when I put on statin.

I was recommended to take the supplement Co-Enzime 10 for cramps in my leg early morning. It helps. Otherwise no side effects. I am 72 and have been on statins since my thirties due to familial history regarding cholesterol.

Very interesting, thank you. I was prescribed Atorvastatin following a STEMI (heart attack) at age 68. After two years of taking them, exercising regularly and following an excellent diet, I was terribly fatigued, had bad muscle pain and (worst of all) was suffering from mental confusion. I was not well enough to drive, so I described these symptoms in a phone call with my doctor and her reply was, “Statins. It’s your statins. Stop taking them immediately and come to see me when you’re able to drive.” After stopping them, my fatigue & confusion cleared up quite quickly, but I’ve been left with peripheral neuropathy, which has been described to me as an after-effect of Atorvastatin. So I won’t be taking them, nor will I eat those Big Dippers! 😀

So are you taking anything else. I had a stemi 4 yrs ago while on thalidomide for blood cancer..my troponin was 39,800. I was on 80mg avtrostatin as my cholestrol was so high. Cholesterol is normal now and I have reduced statin to 20mg..still normal. But what are you taking now..I am also on warfarin 8mg.

@@paulawagstaff686 yes, I was prescribed Ramipril 2.5mg, Clopidigrel & dispersible Aspirin at the time of my MI in 2015. I came off the Clopidigrel after 12 months, as planned, but am still on the other two. I'm not taking any statins, with my GP's agreement. My BP is well-within the 'normal' range, O2 sats average around 98% & my last (pre-lockdown) cholesterol test was in the normal range too. The worst of the statin side-effects cleared up quite quickly, but the peripheral neuropathy has lingered & is occasionally problematic, but on the whole I consider myself very lucky & am pleased with my care (I'm in the U.K. btw). I hope your health continues to improve. 🙂

@@BorderRebels Thank you Martin..I am in NZ. All my Nos are pretty normal...BP a little high though. My LV is pumping at 42% now an improvement on 35 - 40% I still have a small clot that has managed to somehow exist in a newly created pathway.😄 Doing good though in remission technically, and still on monthly immunotherapy/chemo maintenance. So thanks

Oh..I am on Clopidigrel and Betaloc..4 1/2 yrs. Both oncologist and GP have NO knowledge of any treatment outside their prescribed formula. I have added the Vit C, D3, Zinc CO Q10 plus a few others including diet changes only from reading. Oncologist is beyond amazed.

Very interesting and clear explanation. My husband has a condition called Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia, which causes degeneration of the spinal neurons and mobility problems. He is 71 and 18 months ago he had a pulmonary embolism. He had excellent treatment in the local hospital and was prescribed blood thinners. A few months later a GP at our surgery suggested, over the phone, he should be on statins and he was prescribed Atorvastatin. Within a day his mobility was seriously impaired, which was very scary. One thing you don't need if you have a neurological condition is a drug that attacks your muscle fibres. He didn't take the statin any more but has had a radical adjustment to his diet to get LDL and triglycerides down (mainly reducing his intake of white carbs). His figures have improved significantly.

I’ve had terrible fatigue and dark urine I am on 40 mg due to possible TIA. I am 64 years old. I think this medicine is killing me I am exhausted and my doctor has not related the fatigue and blood in urine to the atorvastatin! So I will have to tell him myself.

@@lindanwfirefighter4973 Do you buy red rice yeast at the drug store? I was like a zombie on statins and took myself off of them. It made the Cardiologist mad but I will never take statins again! 2 brother-in-laws died while on statins. It’s a dangerous drug. But most docs won’t admit it.

@@andyeahsowhat74 Agreed it is extremely dangerous. No you don’t buy it in a pharmacy shops. Health food shop. I think GNc sells it on line. My husband had a stroke and first thing they did was put him on a statin. First thing I did was take him off it. One of the guys in the fire department told me about Red Rice Yeast so I got it instead and it lowered his cholesterol quickly with no side effects. The doctor was pissed to say the least! My old Fire Chief was put in a statin drugs and within a month it had ate both his hip joints out and he needed a double replacement. It is a terrible drug. Have you improved since coming of it?

I used to get extremely gastric and feeling of bloating after taking this statin. I stopped taking the medicine for last few months and am doing regular exercises. While cholesterol levels are still high, they have visibly came down. I hope the levels of LDL and triglycerides will improve in the coming months. Thanks for the video

I've taken this for years. No dr will listen or lift a finger to help me. The negligence has destroyed everything i am as a human being. As of recent, memory loss, dementia like confusion, no appetite, the most painful poops in my stomach and vomiting simultaneously. This won't stop. Massive pain and stress in my arms, neck, under breast plate, causing minimal use...the feeling of arm breaking upon use. This began with massive frequent migraines and now paralysis and full facial swelling upon extreme odd stabbing crainial pains. I know i am physically and mentally dying and can do nothing about it anymore but let this happen. The consistent medical disbeliefs and "verbal diagnosis", are slowly torturing me to death. Literally 😢
