Thanks! That's exactly the case - you have to do two loosenings, as you show. I hadn't used the router in so long just figured the bit was stuck. Penetrating oil didn't resolve but your video did. Thanks!

I bought a used SKIL plunge router with a broken and corroded bit in it. And the seller did NOT have the bit removed before selling it. I learned that a toothpick or Qtip can put a little bit of KROIL on the bit shank and on the threads of the collet (has flat sides for a wrench...). A few hours of a soak and lock the collet with the installed lock and tap on the bit end and on the collet while a wrench grips it until it all breaks free. Likely it will be dirty and grimy (which is what is holding the collect in place...) Clean it well with kerosene or spray break cleaner and dry well in a paper towel. Reassemble the collet and do NOT store a router with a bit in it! (it will corrode in place) ! Reply

Do you think smaller bits get stuck more than others? I had a round over bit get stick for 2 years, it stopped me from using the router. Then I struck a lightbulb moment where I used a piece of scrap wood and clamps to pull it out. if I put a straight bit in there, I don't think I will be able to get it out.

I had this happen a few weekends ago.. after buying an old old craftsman router on craigslist that the person hadn't used in ages, i put the old chipped bit into a vice and spun it off.. a light fine sanding on the inside and a fresh bit was good to go back in.. RIP to the old ogee bit that was stuck in there for a decade or two..

How do you remove a broken bit

mole grips and pull hard. If there isn't enough material to grip onto then you need to dismantle the unit completly and hammer it out the back end.
