Up next New Wave 80s duo Wang Chung tell the story of writing one of the quintessential pop culture hits of the 80s. singer Jack Hues was worried about using the band’s name in the chorus of the song thinking it would be cheesy instead it became a part of the lexicon of the decade. The catchphrase of the 80s. Everybody Have Fun Tonight (everybody Wang Chung Tonight ) with a video that now has to have a warning on it do to it’s whacky cinematography that could cause medical issues, the story behind a song that takes you back to the best of the 80s as both Jack Hues and Nick Feldman relate the making and recording of the song that would make them a permanent part of 80s lore.

For those who are too young to have experienced the 1980s in person, including this fantastic, uplifting dance hit, I can't tell you how much great fun you missed out on! For those who were fortunate enough to have enjoyed this during it's debut and heyday, cheers to you Gen-X brothers and sisters! The great news is, the amazing music of the 1980s is still available to us all, and now we get the backstories to go with it thanks to the POR!

I am a junior in high school right now, and every single day to help relieve stress I have so much fun talking to various teachers around the school about what songs/records/albums they remember being mesmerized by when they were younger. I had some teachers tell me they loved this song when they were younger. A majority of them watched and listened to Casey Kasem, while one remembers having the television on and watching MTV’s first moments at 12:00 a.m. on August 1, 1981. I wanna shoutout to these teachers for giving me a “virtual time machine” back to the coolest decade ever. Now, if only we could go back for real…

@ponzo1967

@@catofthecastle1681 I would argue the political decline goes back to LBJ then Nixon. After protesting Vietnam, Civil rights, and a generally harsh political environment in the 60'sand70's the 80's were about getting on with life. We were living through the Cold war, high interest rates, ass whoppings as a child, and an up and down economy but we managed to celebrate life in spite of those things. There were socially conscious songs in the 80's like Everybody wants to rule the world, Born in the USA, We are the world, etc but also Celebration by Kool and the Gang. Entertainment existed in nearly every generation, with the 80's there were many new sounds evolving and I think that's what made some of it so playful. Life is hard and that kinda goes without saying so it's important to create another side to that. Sorry you don't enjoy and appreciate it.

The '80s had some legendary producer/artist interactions that these interviews always flesh out. Unlike today where there are fifteen producers and writers working behind an artist, usually these were one-on-one relationships that shaped the sound of these artists in ways that are easy to overlook. Such big production from Peter Wolf. Funny how they had to go back to the Emulator to punch up the french horns on their Orchesography album. With the 5 1/4" floppy drive, that thing could be considered a classical instrument itself.

1986... One of the best years in music period... What may have been the beginning of a decline for Run DMC, yet it resurrected Aerosmith and introduced the corporate machine to hip hop the collaboration of the remake of "walk this way", it was actually when I started taking rap music seriously and when my favorite artists debuted. There's the release of Van Hagar they'd been in headlines for months, Simply Red, Lionel Richie was dancing on a ceiling... And yes everybody was "Wang Chung" ING... I love the line, but just recently caught it when I watched the lyric video... There's a part in the breakdown toward the mid latter part of the song where a guy says "can you tell me what a 'Wang Chung' is?!" I laughed for what seemed like hours for the rest of that day thinking about it. Hilarious!!! 😆 Good stuff Proff. I love you brother!!!

Lol. Watching this video -I actually thought you were going to talk about the "5 Hits" part, more than "the wonder", Prof-, I recall an actual argument I had with this lady friend of mine. We were listening to "Hypnotize" and I declared it IS the Best Wang Chung song. I got about five minutes of "are you crazy?" rap due to my transgression. Now, I remember "Dance Hall Days" very fondly, I always loved that song, but "Everybody...", it got SO overplayed over here (because it was HUGELY popular), that I ended just skipping it whenever it showed up in an 80's CD collection or something -same as A-ha's "Take on me"... until the Weezer cover and the acoustic version that absolutely broke my heart-. But this video made me realize one thing: There are songs chosen by the execs and suits to be singles, and then there are songs chosen by THE AUDIENCE to last forever. And that is something to think about. Fun memories of youth, nevertheless.

I got to see them live back in the 80s. They opened for The Cars and I thought they were great! In fact, they were better than The Cars who just stood there and sang. It wasn't very exciting, but Wang Chung put on a SHOW!!!

I was lucky enough to see them live right at the height of these hits. They opened up for the Cars (heartbeat city tour). They performed about 45 minutes and got the crowd pumped, especially when they played Everybody Have Fun Tonight. I remembered I paid only bout $25 for ticket. Still have the stub.

What an awesome episode. I was too young to experience "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" on its release, but like the song none the less. The production on this song is top notch. Just the opening of the song with the guitar and drum machine. Loved hearing the singer's take on "playing the game." Yes, the music business is a "business" at the end of the day and all artists come to a point where they want to sell records. So in this case enter Peter Wolf. And what an awesome production. Singer was very humble on how he alluded to the fact that he wasn't ever vocally talented just by mentioning the time when he was in the room with session singer's in L.A. Although I'm more of a fan of "Hypnotize Me" than "Everybody." The third single from Mosaic, such a beautiful love song at its core, the lyrics, etc.

Great interviews! The artists may think the song is fluff or cheesy but the song is a blast and definitely a party tune. You can definitely hear Peter Wolf's influence on the song. “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” is a fun song. I heard it almost everywhere I went when it came out. It wasn’t a song I wanted to own, but I really got into it when I heard it. If you went to a club with dancing when this song played, you would always wind up dancing. I didn’t really like to dance, but invariably when this song was played at a club, a young lady would grab my hand and pull me onto the dance floor. This song created so many fun moments and I met so many lovely ladies because of it. One night, I went out with one of my friends and we were just chilling. There was a group of young ladies at the club and it was apparent they were celebrating one of their birthdays. A young lady came over to talk to me and she was playing wing girl for the birthday girl. She told me her friend was there for her birthday, but she is very shy. She said she was going to request “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” and asked if I would ask the birthday girl to dance. Let me point out, again, that I don’t like to dance. But, I really could feel for this young lady because for a long time I had been very shy. So, when the song started I walked over and asked her to dance. I was surprised when she accepted. When the song was over I sat with her group and talked to her for awhile. She turned out to be a really nice, intelligent, funny young lady. My friend joined me with the group of ladies and we all wound up having a really fun night. It was one of those nights that was very innocent, no romantic encounters, but it was still very special. We wound up staying until the club closed, then we went to breakfast. One of her friends told me that this young lady had never been in a date and thanked me for showing her so much attention. I walked her to her friend’s car after we had breakfast. I could tell how shy she was, so I just gave her a hug, thanked her for a fun night and told her happy birthday. She thanked me for being a gentleman and said she had fun, too. Sometimes you don’t need sparks to fly to have an amazing time. It was fun just being able to draw this young lady out of her shell a bit and see her laugh and smile. Sometimes meeting someone you don’t start a relationship with or hookup for the night with us just amazing. There’s no pressure. Everyone can be their true self and enjoy the moment. I like to think I helped change her birthday from a night of quietly sitting with friends into a night of laughter and dancing. As much as I hate to dance, I asked her to dance two more times. She really lit up when she realized I wasn’t going to be the typical, high-pressure guy who had wandering hands. It was a lovely night.

It’s funny, but my son sent me the demo version of Everybody Have Fun Tonight. It was a favourite of his because I would put it on when he was young and danced to it till we both dropped. I often would do it to get him to take a nap and at the end my wife would find both of us sleeping on his bed. Though his message was not appreciated. “Hey old man, I figure this is about the most Wang Chung you can get these days. Don’t want to risk a heart attack”. I was pissed, but only because he was probably right. Lol

I don't view Wang Chung for what they did (I loved their music), but I view them for what they didn't do. Everybody Have Fun Tonight video was captivating because no one had seen anything like it in video before. It propelled a dance track to the top of the charts. Wang Chung failed to move beyond a pop-riff duo. Nothing they did had depth that cracked the charts. They could have been greater than what they were and what I wanted them to be. They just failed to go beyond and achieve that higher level. In Olympic terms, they'll be remembered for taking 5th place. It's an achievement, but....
