This Alabama Clinic Is Still Performing Abortions

The day after Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, a Republican, signed a bill that put her state on the path to banning almost all abortions, a 20-year-old woman from Tennessee walked into an abortion clinic with an ex-boyfriend and underwent the procedure.
“I'm a single mom of three kids,” said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous, after having an abortion. “I have nothing to offer this child. You know, like, I'm already spread thin. I have my other three to take care of.”
She was one of about 20 women who had the procedure that day at the Alabama Women’s Center. Because there, it was business as usual. The ban - which is certain to be challenged in court - won’t go into effect for several months. Meanwhile, abortion is still legal in the state.
Dalton Johnson co-founded the Alabama Women’s Center in 2001, and since then, the center has had to adapt and sue over multiple new laws and ordinances designed to shut its doors.
“It’s been one thing after another. You know, I kind of feel almost at home in the federal courthouse,” Johnson said. “It's been admitting privileges. It's been the zoning."
“The anti-choice group sued the City of Huntsville for issuing my business license, and so that was a whole battle that we had to fight and pay for out of pocket. And, of course, we prevailed in that one. The building codes,” she added. “And probably some more I just can't even think of.”
So for Johnson, the latest law isn’t much of a surprise. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t emotionally affecting the staff at the clinic, as they answered phones and cared for patients.
“As I was leaving the house this morning, I started to feel like these butterflies in my stomach. The fear was coming over me,” said Makeda Harris, the center’s receptionist. Most days, she’s the first face a patient would see at the clinic.
Outside the clinic, protesters line up every day holding signs and imploring the women who walk inside to choose life. Many of them are regulars, and the staff knows them by name. A mother and daughter prayed outside Thursday after one woman, shielded by the bright umbrellas of the escorts who volunteer in the parking lot, walked in.

@sonoki82 well if you want abortions to be banned there.needs to be some sort of social system in place to take care of those kids. Making poor people who don't have the means to have abortion just fuels the cycle of poverty, meanwhile Karen who does weekly protests against abortion will just fly to another state for a one off. Then go back to her selfish ways saying she isn't like the others. All of this just leads to more taxes and welfare being needed.

Wars are necessary to free people from dictators like Hitler, or fight for something good. People are allowed to have guns, it is a constitutional right, and just because some crazy maniacs are going to use those for something bad doesn't mean everyone should suffer and not be able to have guns. And police are sometimes brutal because they are horrible people with rage bottled up inside of them and choose to take it out on civilians, and yes that should be stopped but there is nothing wrong with a police using brutality to subdue and bring into custody a criminal.

@@larissaleigh4488 Abortions are necessary to free a woman´s life. Oh, do you forget innocents were murdered when America tried to stop Hitler? Yet, they had to stop Hiltler, right? See, we make choices and sometimes those choices mean sacrificing innocent lives. Not fair but we cannot dictate somebody´s else life and people are gonna do what they gonna do, you will not stop them. Then not only a "baby" will die but the woman too. People are allowed to have guns. Sure, but remember guns "kill", no matter for what reason. Killing is the point here, right? And police are sometimes brutal because they are horrible people with rage bottled up inside of them and choose to take it out on civilians, sure. But perhaps you have never encountered a cop that has been brutal to you for no reason so no way you can understand. It happens and it will keep happening. Fair? No. But thats life. Life is not fair and many things that are sad will keep happening, doesnt matter if we like it or not.

It doesnt matter how anyone feels about abortion, it is going to happen. It is as old as civilization. Places that restrict access to abortions, only stop safe abortions. They do not actually drive down abortion rates, they drive people to extremes if they dont want to be pregnant. In fact, countries witht he lowest abortion rates have the most liberal abortion laws and the best access! Nobody thinks ' I want an abortion when I grow up ". It is not the easy option, it is uncomfortable and emotional. Restricting access to abortion only drives up maternal mortality rates and actually decreases the quality of life for existing children.

Modder553 Heh, it didn’t flow over my head and I haven’t voiced my personal views on abortion. Comparing freedom to killing is wrong. They are the exact opposite and a slave owner would know that. That is why they would kill their slaves as a punishment, not set them free. That is how you treat a lesser-than. Not by setting them free. That is why your example doesn’t make any sense. You could compare a slave owner killing their slaves to an abortion and that way try to make people see how it is wrong to destroy a life even if a foetus is not seen as a person.

As a former fetus I am all against the killing and dismembering unborn children. Abortion is the greatest evil that has ever existed. the slaughter of the innocent unborn. A full form of child cut into pieces and removed. Take them out and let them die? And, it’s done. Suck them out in little pieces while their little systems wince at the pain. If one looks at what is being done-how atrocious and cruel it really is-I believe the reality of the evil of abortion becomes self-evident. the heart God has given us as a caring human tells us it’s not only wrong, but very, very wrong and it is evil. This being the case, it doesn’t really matter what human jurisprudence says or how socially or politically acceptable abortion is. Evil is evil. Sin is sin. God’s law takes precedence. A mother who decides to abort her child is unilaterally making a decision to end another person’s life. It is a deliberate termination of a human life while it is still in the womb-and that is and always has been the definition of murder. Murder is defined as “the unlawful, premeditated killing of one human being by another.” We cannot just do whatever we want because it feels good, it’s easy, and socially accepted. Abortion can seem like a quick and easy solution to the problem of an unplanned pregnancy. But sin is never the best way. Never. Sin has eternal repercussions that it never advertises up front. Sin costs more than we want to pay and hurts more than we thought it would. When modern culture decided to separate sexuality from morality, the problems got worse. God never intended any such separation. He created sex for the marriage relationship and for children to be welcomed into that marriage. Yes, it was wrong for you to have sexual relations outside the commitment of marriage-but two wrongs don’t make a right, and it would be wrong for you to end the life of this little child. You know If you cause a pregnant woman to miscarry, killing the unborn child, you can, and probably will, be charged with murder or manslaughter. In law, this applies from conception, no restrictions. The unborn child is viewed as a human being with all those rights under law. Even if the woman didn’t know she was pregnant at the time. Consider that the difference in abortion law is purely whether the child is wanted or unwanted. How moral is that? If you don’t want the baby, you can legally kill it using what are demonstrably cruel and horrific methods. The Child doesn't get a choice because the Child is HELPLESS. Abortion reflects a worldview which is all about the self - what I want is more important than what’s right. The most innocent suffer the worst. Life is sacred from the moment of conception. A Christian by definition is a follower of Christ. Anyone claiming to be a Christian must believe as He did and live according to God’s word. NO! You cannot love Jesus and believe that killing babies is just fine. An unborn child, from the very first moment of conception, is a new human individual. It’s alive and growing and it should be treated with the same respect for its life as any other human being until its natural death. God knows us before we’re even born. How beautiful is that? He’s been there even before I can remember - from the beginning of life to the end. The Bible makes it clear that unborn children are human, alive, and loved by God just as much as we all are even as their tiny bodies are developing and growing in amazing ways. We cannot say we live for God (the Creator of life) in one breath and in the next, say it’s okay to take away another human being’s life before they have a chance to leave the womb. It is our responsibility as Christians to make choices that align with God - principles that align with our Christian values. We have to intentionally create an environment that inspires our children toward kindness and love, and toward valuing the sanctity of life. Our purpose is to shield the weak from abuse by the strong, and there is no one “weaker or more voiceless” than unborn children. Loving one’s neighbour means protecting the rights of the most vulnerable. The Bible tells us who our Creator is, what He has done, what He will do, and how He desires us to live - and provides the tools we need to accomplish that. It does not promise an easy path, but we are called as Christ followers to bring hope to a dark and broken world. but that road leads to life, not death. As Christians, we are supposed to affect the culture, not blend into it. Our actions reveal what we believe about God. If we really value life the way God values life, shouldn’t we be raising our standards instead of lowering them, regardless of the circumstances? My prayer is that you will not end the life of the little child who is growing within you. You should not have an abortion because you and your baby deserve better than that. Seek God’s answers instead. Lord Jesus, we ask You to bless and protect the children who today are in their mothers’ womb. Save them from the danger of abortion. Give their mothers the grace to sacrifice themselves, in body and soul, for their children. Father, extend Your hand of protection to those threatened by abortion, and save them from its destructive power. Give Your strength to all fathers and mothers, that they may never give in to the fears that may tempt them to facilitate abortions. Bless our families, that we may have the joy of welcoming and nurturing the life of which You are the source and the Eternal Father. Amen. Psalm 127:3-5 "Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; They shall not be ashamed, But shall speak with their enemies in the gate."

The Bible actually was talking about judging hypocritically. In other words we aren’t to judge someone for the same sin we ourselves commit unless we have repented. The Bible says he who is spiritual judges all things and commands us to judge rightly. Hope this helps clear up the confusion!

When I first moved to the US I didn’t have time to get set up with a doctor and get a new prescription for my birth control so I went to planned parenthood, the only people that could see me on short notice. As I walked in, there were protestors outside yelling and telling me to reconsider the abortion. I as a 28 year old woman at the time wasn’t fazed by it but after I walked in and saw how many young girls were in there just looking for some damn help, it broke my heart. How hard it must be to be going through the process of getting an abortion (if that’s why they were there) but then also having these people judge them and yell at them. Breaks my freaking heart man.

We have to take care of kids better and have better opportunities for adults... an abortion bill won't stop abortions.... also these southern states need to finally teach kids about sex health from an honest not scared straight perspective and bring back classes that teach life skills.. having to learn about babies (birthing, feeding, diaper changes, doctor visits, etc) taught me at 12 I wanted no parts of a baby unless I was married with a great income. My question for you, is why are you against late term abortion? And where do you mark the beginning of human life? I think it’s a really fuzzy area to say life begins at any other time besides conception. As for helping children outside the womb, you will find that there are tons of agencies and Catholic women centers that provide all the needs necessary for mothers in need like cribs, diapers, food, etc. As a devout Catholic I am a part of the largest charity organization in the world the clothes more people, feeds more people, educates more people, and advocates for justice more then any other organization in the world. elif onel actually science overwhelmingly agrees that the only clear line between life and non-life is conception. Both you and I were once a “cluster of cells.” Once the egg is fertilized a new genetic code is created that will determine everything from sex to eye color to personality traits. Cell division happens instantly and these stem cells are the beginnings of hearts, brains, fingers, toes. Without these vital early stages of development, neither you nor I exist. Therefore you and I were once a “cluster of cells.” Life starts at conception, and therefore deliberately killing that life is murder. This is not a women’s issue it’s a humans rights issue. By calling it a women’s issue you are at the same time removing the responsibility from men. The man helped create the baby, but the baby is the woman’s responsibility only? How pro-women is that?? We need better education, contraception, and laws that hold men accountable for their irresponsible choices just as much as women. Killing innocent lives is not the answer. You’ve been lied to. Wake up.

They are a clump of cells in the same sense that you and I are clumps of cells, but being made up of those living, functioning cells is makes us alive. I assume you’re referring to the embryonic phase of development where the embryo hasn’t yet taken on the form of a developed baby. That phase doesn’t last very long. By 6-7 weeks that embryo is starting to look much more baby like and has a beating heart. In fact most women who are not expecting to get pregnant are only just realizing they are pregnant at this point. But despite what the embryo looks like at different levels of development, what makes it less alive than a born baby?

At least 2 women die a day from childbirth in america, maternal mortality rate is 20.7, highest among all the developed countries. I guess death of women that are born and alive don't matter to them, even though their own book does not consider abortion murder. Religious people are hypocrites blinded by blind beliefs lol. Take those beliefs away, they don't know who they are anymore
@Steffi5376

@-- Why is the fetus' (it's a fetus, not a baby yet) life important than the life of the mother?- who is living breathing and has lived for years, feels emotions and pain while it is questionable and only an assumption if you believe the baby feels those things.
@Steffi5376
@Steffi5376 5 жыл бұрын
@-- Not at all, it is not okay to kill anyone but to call abortion murder is absurd. What I don't believe is someone else forced to risk their life and physical if not mental health for a baby they don't want and forced to carry it for 9 months and be cut open for it or squeeze it out. It is inhumane. Most abortions are done in the first trimester (before 12 weeks) before any of the criteria you mentioned happens. You can't simply say a ball of cells has the same worth of a human living breathing woman and force her to give up her autonomy and life for this
@Steffi5376
@Steffi5376 5 жыл бұрын
@-- it is a human being but it is not a person, equating that thing to a woman and saying it has the right to control a woman and force her to risk her life (literally cuz 2 woman die a day in america from childbirth, maternal mortality rate is 20.7 which is highest among all the 49 developed countries) is insane and a insult to women everywhere to say she has no rights and an embryo has more rights than her and the right to control her. And don't put words into my life, I'm not talking about someone's worth to life here but I'm talking about the fact that no one has the right to force someone else to risk their life for them against their will. NO ONE. Same standards are applied in all other situations (organ donations, murder in self defense, etc) but somehow a fetus overrides the woman's life and rights and has more rights than all humans that are born and alive according to you right? You talk about the bodily autonomy of the fetus without bringing up the fact that it can't even move on its on in the first trimester, when most abortions happen, and is just drifting in the womb, meaning it doesn't have bodily autonomy of it's own body yet. It is not viable or sentient yet. "It's inhumane for a woman to take responsibility..." so this is about punishing women by forcing her though pregnancy and birth and inflicting her with suffering and pain for making a baby to you? Not about saving lives?

@Jen Smiles, Doctors take an oath to “do no harm” yet they kill babies ripping them limb from limb. Why is murder of a baby even an option? Let a couple who cannot have babies adopt them, it would make the couple extremely happy healing their heartache AND it would save a life from being killed in cold blood. How can anyone who isn’t evil be against that? My comment is quite rational I reckon.

@@resolutesupport3874 Well, how about when forcing someone to go through will a pregnancy is actually causing harm? Did you forget about that? There are medical cases, when abortions are neccesary, either because the fetus isn't viable or because the mother would die/experience severe injury. Not to mention psychologically, there are people who would rather die than carry a pregnancy to term (you're speaking with one). Isn't forcing them to give birth to a dead child, die giving birth, forcing them to become handicapped for the rest of their lives or allowing them to hurt themselves or even kill themselves because they were denied an abortion "doing harm"? Now I only brought up more extreme cases, but generally speaking, you're much much more likely to die from childbirth than from an abortion (since abortions are among the safest medical procedures). And pregnancy is hard and painful for the body. Pregnancy always causes some harm, though to a varying degree of course. So forcing pregnancy would definitely be doing harm. Fact of the matter is, "do no harm" isn't as black and white as you seem to think it is. If it were completely black and white, doctors would also force women to have abortions if they were to most likely to die from their pregnancy, but they don't do that, because the mother always gets a choice.

@Emily Moss, Those statistics if true are extremely distressing, I cannot barely believe there’s that many kids up for adoption PER YEAR. People PLEASE practice safe sex if you feel the need to partake in it!! This is a serious problem that doesn’t have an easy solution. It sounds straight forward, use protection during intercourse UNLESS you want to start a family. But sadly evidently hundreds of thousands of people don’t.

I'm adopted, along with a sister, from an orphanage in Colombia, by a Christian pro life family. My parents and extended family have always supported charities and kids in developing countries. I'm also a single mom now. When I had my son at 21, my parents entire church got together and bought me everything I would need for the first 2 years of his life (clothes, books, toys, literally everything). I'm a Christian. I am pro life for myself, but I am pro choice for others. I don't have any right to tell anyone what to do with their bodies, whether or not I agree with it or I don't. It's not my body, so it's not my place to say anything. I know that for me, I could not go through with an abortion but that doesn't mean I have the right to take that choice away from anyone else. I have been through pregnancy at a young age and raised a son alone, I know how hard it is. My son was also very much wanted, he's the love of my life and I have happily sacrificed things for him because I wanted to. I choose to have him, he's my responsibility and I wouldn't change my decision for the world. That was my choice, to have my son and to raise and love him. I can't imagine the trauma and hurt I would've gone through if the government or anyone had taken that choice away from me. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering a woman goes through being forced to go through with a pregnancy, especially if it's a pregnancy that's a result of abuse or trauma. Anyways, so for people saying pro lifers are religious or that they don't do any good, in my own experiences, I've been supported as a young single mother, and not all religious or Christian people are the same, everybody has different beliefs and that's okay, as long as they are respectful and their beliefs are not forced or pushed on anyone else (which is not happening when they stand infront of a clinic protesting, they're disrespectful and honestly awful for doing that). Its always okay for people to have different opinions and beliefs, but it's never okay to shame or use your beliefs to hurt anyone or to be disrespectful to th.

Bailey B Firstly, don’t even use the word “logic” in your convoluted, and entirely inaccurate analogy. At 6 weeks, an embryo is less than HALF an inch in length. A human being has loved, has memories, feels pain, etc. an embryo might as well be a tumor at this point, bc there isn’t much difference. 90% of abortions are performed before 9 weeks of development. We are talking about a medical procedure here. Are you going to tell me next that I can’t have surgery to remove a tumor bc it’s also growing inside me??? Ridiculous.

The doctor is a saint. I feel bad for my sisters in Alabama. I have the privilege to live in a country where it's legal to have an abortion without questions asked up until 18 weeks. I lived in a country where it was illegal but private clinics would do them anyway. I lived in constant fear of getting pregnant although I'd use protection. So much fear that I stopped being intimate all together. Fear of sex set in and that was a very dark and sad period in my life.

my question for anti abortions activists is: what options besides abortion would they suggest? give the kid up for adoption? okay what if the woman doesn't have insurance? you expect her to be $10k+ in debt to have a kid she can't keep? and what if she does have insurance? do you want her to go through the emotional turmoil of carrying and birthing that kid and then having to give it away? all that work and pain just to give it away because they know damn well they have nothing to offer it? when my mother was pregnant with me she was warned that there was a very high chance i would be born with down syndrome, and she was asked if she would like to terminate the pregnancy. i was born perfectly healthy, but if it had turned out my mother's pregnancy wasn't viable she would have needed options. she had a choice, that is all i'm grateful for. stop trying to control women.

On the high end, maybe you would have 50,000 abortions still perhaps being performed. There are one million abortions in the US.. every year. It is going to be very hard to get an abortion once it is illegal, no doctor after getting out of school of 8 years is going to risk his medical license... now on the high end of fifty thousand you still saved 950,000 lives...are you actually debating this..?
