The ladies field was pretty good. The ice dance results were interesting. None of the pair events have had any depth so far except Skate Canada. Lubov and Charlie didn't skate so well here but the field was much easier to medal in. The men were all over the place. Chock and Bates look great. Kayne and O'Shea continue to regress in every aspect and they never score well internationally, for good reason. Sui and Han look great and Han continues to throw her higher and farther than a lot of the guys who are much taller than him. It's like they're from another planet.

Another great recap! Dave, I totally thought the same thing about Nikita's smile. Especially in the free dance, it seemed very...out of place? It really stuck out. And I think the idea of Hawayek & Baker going to Carol Lane is a great idea. It will help the team, and push Piper & Paul. And as great as it would be for Piper & Paul to get a medal in Canada, I really think (at this point) it should go to Chock & Bates. Their material, to me, is top 2 in the world for what we've seen. Thanks again for the episode!!!

I see lots of time Kostornaya's first name is pronounced same as Zagitova's. I think it is a spelling trick... in Russian Kistornaya's first name sounds like ALYONA, same way you say Savchenko... and last name of Khromyh. Seems like you are strugling with it. First vowel is stressed. Letters in the beginning and in the end is H... like sound in word HOTEL. starts with H and ends with H.

Dave - Shcherbakova got ! on all her FIVE lutzes. And don't forget Mariah Bell for the GPF. All she needs to do is beat Medvedeva and Miyahara at Rostelecom. I really felt for Tuktamysheva here. I wanted her in the GPF but she lost it by a finger aka -GOE on Lutz/Flip (/aka not enough UR calls on Miyahara). Tukt is a star though, she would have been a great addition to the GPF.

Does Alena, for long term, need a quad if she has a 3A in a short program (a slight boost), and 2 in the FS. With good spins, footwork, consistency, PCS, and 3As, she may be fine without quads. Especially if others with quads don't make it. Also, I think with You Young, I think she is probably fine. The olympics is years away and she is super young (and I don't feel the Eteri "you are best when you are young" technique). She has time to build consistency for 3A and maybe a quad by 2022.
@rop888
@rop888 4 жыл бұрын
She doesn't need one and she might not injure herself before 2022 by trying. She's slower to add tech than the other two Eteri even mentioned. Her score is not that much lower than Sasha's 4 quad programs. And You Young will be fine as well. She doesn't need be perfect right now. Eunsoo isn't really any competition for her and Korea has two worlds spots anyway.

Alena has best artistry of the 3 Eteri girls and great height on her current jumps but even with her performance quality, the judges won’t give her the PCS score that she deserves until another year since this is her first senior year. Perhaps by Olympic year. But it will only get more competitive with the upcoming years with the new Eteri juniors coming up. The youngins are already doing quads, not just learning them as seniors and who knows when their growth spurts will come or injuries. Look what happened to Medvedeva and Zagitova. It seems 15 or 16 if the age to hit it in the Olympics.

Evan Perilstein Why do you think they don’t go the safe route? I have been gathering statistics for many noticeable coach teams in Japan, Russia and USA, and Tutberidze’s group has less injures per number of students than many other teams. On one of the interviews, Eteri mentioned that they keep very close eye on their students to make sure they don’t try jumps when they are tired or lack concentration. So I don’t see any indication so far that the team doesn’t take safety very seriously.
@rop888

@@evanperilstein5308 For Alena they will. I think she's actually the one they have the most hope for the future for. Coming back to your post about Goe, because i also was the one who was offended, until i blocked some people from that post. I think Anna doesn't have problems, i saw how Sasha trains her arms in her interview. May be this post is not a problem, the problem is some people and coaches who put minus, 0, or +1 Goe to 15 years old girl without explanations. I hope they dont do it to their own children or students nullifying their achievements and bringing to psychological problems. I finally decided to watch film Perfume. It is about person who never received care in his life and nobody teached him how to love other people and how to receive love from anybody, and care about his or other people lifes, he was teached only how to talk and how to work. So, his great talent brought him to madness. May be it is not the sport who kills sportsman, but actions of people who were teached only how to talk and how to work, but not how to love and respect other people's achievements

I definitely think Marie-France and Patch have gelled so well with C/B because of good chemistry. MF seems to be enjoying choreographing for a team with similar strengths to her own. Dubreuil/Lauzon and Chock/Bates never had the best SS or speed but what they both use to their advantage is their height difference to create beautiful lift positions. MF & Maddie are also the stars of their team with the men being the perfect foils. And they are both off and on-ice couples with passion and chemistry in spades.

Alena: I completely agree. I think of the three, she’s the one who’s got... the full package with technique that looks like it’ll have greater longevity. Trusova does have a strong body, but like you said, the risks are high for injury. They still have three more years, and that’s a long time, long enough for the body to start feeling the stress. Thus, I don’t like it when people start hyping these skaters when we don’t know what’ll happen yet. It’s also a mental game that won’t be helped by the pressure.

Highlight of Cup of China for me was the return (and return to the podium) of Han Yan. Nothing else came close. Not sure why so many people are knocking the men's event here. I was intrigued by the line-up of skaters and the fact that a number of medal contenders (like Jin and RIzzo) had already flopped their first GP assignments and hence had no chance to make the final but had the ability to spoil someone else's chance of making the final; which is exactly what happened with both Tanaka and Messing getting knocked out of contention. (For the record: Messing finished 4th at Skate America, not third - as Dave says here - so he needed a 1st or 2nd to have a legit shot. With two 4th place finishes, Messing has zero chance of making the finale now.) So I already expected the event to be topsy-turvy. What I didn't expect - and it was a marvelous surprise - was that Han Yan would win the SP and finish second after the FS. He has no other GP assignment so he won't have a shot at making the final but I don't care: I'm just thrilled that he did so well on his return to competition. Gorgeous skater/skating.

@@lucasblacklight1280 Excuse me, but if you read my comment again, I never mentioned that I hate Anna. And personally, I think she is a gorgeous skater who pushes the figure skating world forward with difficult jumps so I like her alot. I just think she is not quiet at the level of getting 9's in her PCS yet, which is same level as Satoko. And if you disagree, that is fine with me. Everyone's opinion is different so I respect that but don't just over-interpretate my comment and write unthoughtful, offensive replies.

The discussion wether Liza is planning to do a Quad at nationals is quite strange … doing a quad at such an important Competition like russian nationals for the first time is almost like suicide; So, no, I do not think that this is gonna happen. It is better to do a clean 3-3 than a wobbly or ur Quad.I agree that missing the GPF might be even good for her … it might give her some extra- time for preparing for RN`s. But a "Quad- premiere" - no.

I agree, I'm a bit skeptical on the current quad jumpers lasting till the next olympics. These girls will hit puberty and might have the old problems that arises with getting a more mature body and not to imagine the injuries. For now they are killing it though! 😮 If they do plan to go with Trusova and Scherbakova, I wonder if they would tone it down (quads) and get it back near the olympics ? Maybe make them learn 3As for the meantime? As for Alena I feel that shes purposely phasing herself in preparation for maybe a long term goal? She has the 3A but shes taking her time learning the quads.

Elizaveta: I’m glad you guys are optimistic with her. I thought, by now, you’d say that she should retire. However, I don’t think she’ll get that quad by nationals. Also, her biggest problem has always been the choreography and PCS. They’re... not addressing that, so until they do, her skating remains the same. I’ve always felt like she has more potential in her performances, but it’s the same strategy in a new playing field with new competitors so tactics need to change.

This season is very interesting- in the ladies there are skaters really pushing things forward, and a lot of skaters actually moving things backward (have we ever seen so many combos with a double toe on the end?). There are the skaters stretching to reach the technical content of Eteri's girls, and then a surprisingly large group of ladies hanging onto lower level triple combos, with no other evolution in their skating skills, artistry, content, etc. By the end of this season going into the next, I think there will be a real shakedown in terms of who is still competitive.

I was surprised at Sui/Han's new SP. I like it, but not as much as their Blues for Klook SP two years before. Their long program...yes! They kept it! They only performed it twice this year. I think Sui needs to change her dress, though. If only to match Han's more. Scherbakova's win was expected; Miyahara getting the silver here was unexpected. Tuktamysheva with her 2 3As I had predicted for silver. I do like Miyahara's FP, though. Boyang winning the men's singles here was expected. However, he needs to bring his A-game if he's going to compete with Yuzuru and Nathan. Han Yan's comeback was WOW! That 3A...but like Jason Brown, needs to up his technical content if he's going to be competing against Jin, Hanyu and Chen. I felt bad for Young You, but I have a feeling she'll be at 4CC, and even Worlds. Mateo Rizzo did well, but not enough to get into the GPF; I do think he'll medal again at Euros. NHK should be for Sui and Han to win; all they need to do is get that Grand Prix Final title. Thanks for the recap! Rostelecom is going to be a blast!
