Why do people think that Zagitova needs to retire only because she is not number one anymore. She can skate for many years and go to her second olympic games if she wants to. Maybe she will not end up in the first place but she has a chance to end up at the podium. No one says that Maria Bell needs to retire. Why? She is 23 and is also not the number one in her Country.

Rocket3711 at the moment no, but Olympic cycle is in 2 years and they current 3 ladies will be hitting the period what Medvedeva was facing in 2018 - change of bodies and that would be hard to handle with 4x jumps. In that situation, Alina, if she continues to skate, could slip in. The field is wide and deep but she is not too far on the waiting list .

I think it's only because Zagitova already achieved all the world titles, at such young age. It's normal that people don't want to see a queen losing against someone. On the other hand, Mriah Bell still got the reason to go on.

If Alina just wants to skate, she's still capable of winning medals and making it to the Final. However, it will be difficult for her to get back on another world team as she'd need to place top 3 and of now she's 4th. It's unlikely she'll make another Olympic team unless she can add a 3A or quad; based on her abilities, both seem very unlikely. As for Bell, she's one of the top 2 in the US so she has every reason to keep skating as making it to worlds and the Olympics are very much within her grasp if she can maintain her form. The Russian field is so deep that even a skater with Alina's abilities and scoring power is still only 4th in the field.

You are so wrong about Alina Zagitova. She DOES have charisma and talent. It is not possible for a person with no charisma to win all her titles and be loved by so many people. Yes, she is now behind technically since she has transformed from a girl to a woman. But the same can happen to Anna, Sasha and Aliona, we just don’t know. But please remember that Alina was them at 15, she had very tricky lutz-loop combo and all her jumps in the second half, nobody else did that. Despite all her titles and fame, she managed to stay a very modest girl and always behaves with great dignity. She does not throw tantrums, does not leave her coaches for teaching other girls quads etc, she comes to the skating rink and works extremely hard every day because she wants to skate, because there are so many people who love her and want to see her on ice performing her beautiful programs. Don’t you think that she deserves some respect? Noone else would have continued after winning her titles and getting Puma and Shiseido contracts and tolerated all these youngsters constantly beating her now but she did.

Everyone keep asking eteri to produce an adult skater, now that we have zagitova, suddenly everyone want her to retire. Not eteri fan here, but see that you guys are Hypocrate. I still resent the way Mao had to retire just because everyone including JSF said so. Both of them love skating let them skate, yuna who was sick of getting injured, skating culture and the pressure that was put on her, was kept being asked to skate, but the ones who still have passion to skate are kept getting asked to retire. THE IRONY of all.

Ananda Patricia to be clear I wasn’t advocating for her retirement. I was disputing the notion that Eteri’s methods have finally produced an adult skater. They haven’t. Where I agree with the original poster is that I don’t want girls to have to retire after they go through puberty either. That’s why I’m concerned Eteri’s technique is quickly becoming the only way to win, and it seems to be successful only with pre-pubescent girls.

It's most likely that Zagitova is going to continue to skate until she feels like it doesn't fulfil her anymore, because in a recent interview she said that she found a new motivation after the growth spurt. So at this point it's just a waiting game till the next season; Zagitova knows what it's like to lose the jumps and the muscle memory, and probably knows that the junior-turned-senior Eteri girls are going to have some difficulties with their quads and their 3A's, which means another chance for Zagitova to come back and go for gold. And when it comes to GPF in Italy, I think that Sui/Han and Boikova/Kozlovskii are the ones to watch.

Evan Perilstein they are not but there are techniques to improve them. The 3Lz is actually in terms of height pretty solid just needs to clarify the edge from ! to outside. But Anna has same issues. 3A is current short but Trusova had similar and suddenly at the Rostelecom they mad it upwards and now she rotates. It needs hard work and training and by 2022 Alina will have passed the puberty so would be more stable. I believe in her as long as she has the patience and is not enticed by all the shows

I am really baffled at Dave always sending all Eteri’s girls to Western choreographers. It all started with Medvedeva and Dave saying “imagine if she had David Wilson’s choreography” and when it did happen , Medvedeva had 2 of the worst programs in her entire career and yes, the overly praised Sandra Besic was involved. After this experience Medvedeva has Averbuch doing her SP which does suit her much better (just her awful costume ruins the impression). Dave never criticised this program. Her LP is with Shaye Lynn Bourne and Dave criticises it again saying it is not elevating her and it is boring. Look at Eunsoo and Tom Dickson’s programs, are they any good? Rika’ s SP program has not been valued highly by TSL even though it is Shaye Lynn. So why send Eteri’s girls to them? After test skates , you said that Alina’s LP is the best in her career. You loved Anna’s program. Kostornaia’s SP is fantastic and she got WR for it. Remember Lipnitskaya’s Schindler’s list? This program has and will continue staying in people’s memories forever. Alina’s Olympic SP and LP were so impressive and memorable! We all have different tastes and different nations have different tastes as well and yes, not all Russian programs are great but also not all Western programs are great either.

I think you guys are a bit harsh on Daniil. I'm not big on Alina's competition programs either, but her gala programs are very good. And as for other skaters on the team, you have programs like Anna's Rondo and Firebird, Kamila's Spiegel, and Aliona's Departure/November, which clearly strike a cord with audiences and fans. (Eteri has a hand in the choreo, as well, it should be noted.) Also, when you consider the sheer number of programs Daniil's doing each season, it's pretty damn impressive.

@@evanperilstein5308 I think the most objective way to assess program quality is by audience response. Those of us who follow the sport closely are going to have our biases and strongly held opinions. But when you take a broader audience - both at events and online - a majority of whom have no idea who Daniil or Eteri are, many of whom don't even know who the skaters are - and you observe their response to programs, that to me is truly telling. I've been to multiple major events over the past year, and there are few programs I've seen that have elicited the audience response that Daniil's top programs have elicited. Same deal online, when you look at the millions of views Daniil's programs have gotten - again, mostly from folks who likely have limited knowledge of the choreographers, coaches, skaters, etc. and thus no preconceived biases. These aren't people who are inflating their assessment of Daniil's programs to, say, match the skater's advanced technical components. No, these are people who have no idea what technical components are, and who are responding the way they're responding simply because they find these programs moving. That's something you can't fake, and something that carries a lot more weight than the niche group of skating obsessives like us typing pale-skinned in front of our computer screens.
@arose10
@arose10 4 жыл бұрын
@@evanperilstein5308 Really? And your assertion is based on...? Let's take a look at Anna's Skate America videos from NBC, which are great examples. 4mm some views between them. You're telling me that more than a minority of these viewers know what a quad is, or appreciate the significance of a ladies skater doing one? Let's look at the actual comments. Yes, a few people mention the quads, but even more so, people mention her artistry and elegance, and the beauty of the program. They, of course, talking about the costume change, crafted by Eteri and Daniil, which some people here might call gimmicky, but which clearly wows audiences. You'll see multiple comments along the lines of, "I don't even watch skating and am not sure how this video was recommended to me, but it moved me to tears." Quads don't move people to tears, especially people who don't follow skating. Rather, it's the program and performance thereof that stir these emotions. Once again, I put a lot more weight in these authentic, impartial responses to programs than the opinions of obsessive armchair skating critics.
@naa7898
@naa7898 4 жыл бұрын
@@arose10 Not to dismiss Anna's strong performance & natural musicality, but I think the popularity of that video has a lot to do with the dress change. Jason Brown's Riverdance, J/C's Sound of Silence, Yulia's Schindler's List & Jimmy Ma's Turn Down for What are all good examples of programs that caught on with the general public. However, I'm not sure if virality is a particularly reliable measure of program quality. The popularity of videos can be greatly impacted by the size of the viewing audience (for e.g., the views on Olympic vs. non-Olympic performances), the competitive success of the athlete, the country that the skater is representing (for e.g., the views on skaters from South Korea vs. average), the popularity of the music, the creativity of the program, the costumes, gimmicks, etc. And while I agree that it's always important to glean the insight of casual viewers, they're reacting to what they're seeing - which is impacted by the aforementioned characteristics & a digital algorithm. For all we know, they could have stronger reactions to less popular programs.

With Alena, I think they're giving her the programs she wants. Daniil did a really good job with her Stella's Theme lyrical program, but that season Alena gave an interview saying she wants to skate to something more pop and didn't love lyrical pieces. The next season they gave her R&J which she didn't seem to really like. This Twilight program I think is her dream program; she gave an interview she she describes vampires and why she thinks they're the most beautifully incredible creatures. I'd rather her have something she enjoys than a lyrical piece; she's a teenager and most 16 year olds don't love lyrical/classical music (with the exception of Anna because she did give an interview on how much she loves classical). Re. Alina, I think her SP is Daniil's best choreography, no? Even Doug Haw said it was done really well and he doesn't normally like Daniil's choreography.

No matter how much Alina improves y'all will still call her "not artistic, URing everywhere, no SS" etc just because everybody labeled her once for beating fandom favorites. She has so much speed, lightness/height in jumps and still the best jump entry exits this season. Her only problems are her slow rotation speed which causes UR and crossover posture. Just because she didn't start her senior career with emo fairy theme or upbeat funk doesn't mean she lacks anything from what the fandom considers as the "top artistic" ladies.

Rika has the best balance of all the newbie ladies with technical and artistry. If she just gives us eye contact and facial expression, she would knock it out of the park on artistry and components. Medvedeva fakes her skating skills just by giving us her amazing facial expressions. Medvedeva should be an actress. You would think facial expressions would be the easiest thing to learn rather than a quad or triple axle.

Both programs are great but I get why her PCS are a bit lower. She has the capacity to really sell the choreography from start to finish but sometimes she goes in and out of the performance and doesn't really project the whole time. She reminds of Satoko in that way: Satoko started off as a more introverted skater but, over the years, she's learned to bring her performance out and now she's THE best in the field when it comes to performance. Rika just has to keep working on it.

It's pretty obvious that Eteri's group all use the same choreographer not because of money but because it gives Eteri more control and flexibility. Completely agree with Dave on Aliona’s and Rika’s FS. Rika has great knee bend and a smoothness, but she could be faster and she’s a bit like Shoma with overdoing the crossovers but with less conviction imo. I think Alina gets high PE/IN because she has a presence on the ice that’s not always captured on camera. Aliona has the type of performance quality and projection that could probably make any choreo look good, but isn’t the SP some proof that her team can sometimes deliver quality? I think Alina’s ex is quite nice too. Interesting that people always say things like “if only the Eteri girls had a different choreographer/ went to Lori etc”, but we’ve seen some of the things the Chinese singles team has gotten from north american choreographers and it’s still not great. I think Eteri’s team makes the most out of what they are given from the skaters themselves and do a good job of muting weaknesses. As for Aliona, she asked to do the Twilight FS

Regarding Stepanova/Bukin's free dance, I think it's fine, but if you had told me in advance they were combined Einaudi and Justin Timberlake, I would have been expecting something weirder and/or more garish. Being in the Atlantic Timezone, I couldn't watch the ladies or men live, so waking up on Saturday to find that Roman Sadovsky had almost won the silver medal was quite a development. Huge amounts of natural talent, still struggles to adjust to being over six feet tall. He brought back the triple Lutz this year after not doing in last, hasn't been going great so far. But this free skate was probably his best ever, at least as a senior.

I want to give a big bravo to Yuhana Yokoi for finishing 4th in such a strong field, and with technical content that would normally have made her a non factor. This right after her Rostelecom appearance. Earlier she won Bronze at Finlandia. Mako also had redemption for that WTF?! at Skate America. Japan actually showed well on home ice even if they didn't win gold. I got a sense within seconds of Alina starting her FS that she was determined not to let it get away from her like the SP did, and she delivered. Aljona Kostornaia's (I'm going start spelling her name that way - "Alena" is just a transliteration convention from Cyrillic and tends to cause her name to be mispronounced) SP was my highlight of the week to be sure. I did not see Rika winning gold after that, until they showed a planned 4S during her FS warmup. I have to wonder how this competition might have gone had she attempted and landed that, especially considering that Aljona made one small error in her FS.

@@MusicLover-qz5ez No Rika would have won if scored fairly. She didn't win because the powerful Russian Federation memo pressured judges and tech crew to overlook her tech calls and ignore her flat edges and give them high GOE and overlook her borderline to ur triple axels, which were called in the Internationaux de France SP. They also overlooked her triple salchow ur in the long and inflated her PCS by 2.5 points in the compared to Internationaux de France so that a 76 became an 85. Her PCS were higher than Rika's and so were her step sequences even though Rika has better sharper edges and more plasticity and rhythmic movement to the music. I was worried for Kostornaia not winning. She had the toughest GP assignments and Eteri was doing her obnoxious countdown on IG every time her skaters won. Can you imagine ruining her last IG post of the GP?? Hanyu to me seemed off his peak at SC, though I expect him to win the GPF. That's really his event where he skates the best. Agree, Nathan isn't peaking there. He peaks at Nationals and does a little worse at worlds. But he did fly off to California really quickly and is already training there. But Nathan needs to lose so he stops playing around in New Haven tbh. Raf will be pleased even if he pretends to be mad in the k&c

Why 'they' still use Dani G programs? that's where cultural differences come into play, I guess. *They* are a TEAM, Eteri, Sergey and Dani G. and you don't get rid of someone from *your team* because there are other [better] choreographers out there. You give your partners a chance to grow, with you. Eteri made it clear in a couple of interviews, if you want to work with her, you will be working with them all. It is all or nothing.

They used to use Ilia Averbukh all the time... Did they go with Dani G to save money and make a bigger profit?
@insi4547
@insi4547 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheSkatingLesson Well, Ilia was the one who brought Dani G. to Eteri's camp (Dani used to be a skater in his shows). Dani joined Eteri's team late 2014. Once the 'apprenticeship' was over Dani devoted 100% time to the camp, while Ilia, busy with his shows and TV shows, worked with Medvedeva. If you have some 'feeling' about Eteri as a person (+the cultural mindset) you'll see Dani G is a family to her-> his mom was working with the team too, they spend amount off the ice together, she mentioned in an interview she has no friends off the ice, only *partners* = her team etc. No offence, I see your "profit" argument as valid, but coming from a very different cultural background;) Not that Eteri would not care about the debit/credit balance, but in this case imo it is not about that at all.

I think Rika is really good at interpreting the music with her body and arm movements, but her face....It just completely pulls you away from the performance, specially when she has these kind of upbeat programs. It makes sense that last year's music suited her better: it was moodier and therefore it made sense that she skated it with an almost blank face.

Hey guys, I have a quick question regarding what you said about imagining what Sandra Bezic could do program-wise for Hanyu:: At what point does a person at the level of a Hanyu decide to choreograph their own programs vs relying on a choreographer? I may be wrong but I imagine the John Currys and Oksana Baiuls feeling out artistic expression from within as opposed to relying on someone to suggest moves for them to interpret the music.... It's amazing that Hanyu seems to be getting noticeably better with every successive competition this year. I don't mean just jumps or spins either. I mean the concentration to make every crossover and every movement more pure, effortless and EFFICIENT is just very much a gift to see. I contrast this to Nathan who seems.to have less timing on his jumps than he has had in the past. Nathan is trying to make up for a bit of a lack of height on the jumps with his incredibly powerful rotational abilities. Hanyu is becoming more elegant and efficient and Nathan at Yale is not able to put in the time or have close enough proximity to Raphael to be able to maximize like Hanyu is doing. I am a huge Nathan Chen fan but, especially with his costumes and programs, Nathan is falling way behind Hanyu and I don't think he can possibly bridge the gap..... What do you guys think? BTW, I loved the historical perspective video you did on Eteri's ladies, that eased great to see all that information!

NHK was not better than Skate Canada though? His score was 20 points lower and Nathan has beaten that FS score this season. It was still brilliant, but I'm not seeing the improvement over Skate Canada, which was legit amazing. And I honestly wouldn't even begin to count Nathan out. Maybe I'm crazy, but I expect Nathan in at least 2nd gear against Hanyu at the GPF, not just getting by. And like it or not, their PCS difference is not much so Yuzu really can't rely on that to win. And other than a 4lz being added maybe this is about his peak TES at the moment. Nathan hasn't even begun to do his final layout yet. And disagree about the programs. Yuzu's SP remains great, but his FS shouldn't have been repeated. Though Nathan's SP is not that strong this season. Idk, I feel they'll be pretty even unless one makes an error like at worlds.

@1:09:02 So, I saw this documentary Hanyu had in Japan. He was asked if he had friends to hang out with. And he said there that he has no friends (outside skating). His life is school then training. He doesn’t even live in his home as there are many paparazzi outside. And almost all interviews with his high school classmates seem to have comments about Hanyu in an outsiders’ perspective. He knows himself that he likes it better to be alone. But, it was said in the documentary that he always have his mom with him whenever he goes to Canada. Another skater in the Cricket Club mentioned that he has some kind of invisible wall.

And you missed the 3A landing of Trusova, which basically makes 1st place reserves for her and others simply hoping she makes a mistake. Shcherbakova is arguably also coming with a 3A but also 4Fl so the contest is going to be deadly at GPF, Russian Ntl, European and World in ladies. Why Eunsoo fell was because she was on her full blade, causing it to slip a few centimeters. By the time she regained grip from her toepick it was too late, she was already going up on a strong lean. If you look at the video frame by frame (pause and then use < and > keys) you can actually see her skate slip (it's the last two frames before the .19 second mark): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gb6Fi86bubW0n4E.html I think the issue is part technical (having the technique of coming down so shallow with the blade, as opposed to being more toe-picky) and part physical (not having enough strength to keep the blade off the ice). This is why with the same technique you can have different results, depending on the physical aspect such as exhaustion, nerves, etc.

Sui and Han were amazing with a fall. The throws were awesome. It’s good for them to have some mistakes and pace themselves. I agree Alexa is the most talented pair skater the US has had. The Knierims had a chance to medal in this strong field, but they were way too off and I’m sure they’ll iron out many of the issues they had here. And fluke things like missing a death spiral pivot they just have to forget. Silly things like that dropped their score much lower than it should have been.

Since this is only Jason Brown's second skate of the season, I'm not sure why Dave is suggesting his team should be in emergency fix mode with him already. And why does a bad skate almost always lead to the suggestion that a skater should ditch his/her new routine and go back to an old one? There is nothing wrong with Jason Brown's routines. They are quite good. His problems lie elsewhere. What I want to know is what happened to the quad that he was supposedly going to add to his programs this season? I'm guessing that the problems he had landing his triples at NHK Trophy will probably lead him to step back from attempting any quads at the US nationals. This would make strategic sense considering the inconsistency of the other US male skaters - excluding Nathan Chen - but unless Brown's only goal is to win a medal in the team event at Worlds or the Olympics he is going to have to start adding quads sooner than later.

The next time Meagan Duhamel comes on, I want to know what they're doing at Skate Oakville--it seems to be working! The Japanese pair only teamed up in August, and 3 months later they earned higher scores than I think either of them ever got with their previous partners. It makes sense that they were so excited! The explanation I keep hearing about Kostornaia's free skate music is that she loves Twilight and wanted to do it. I can believe that she loves Twilight and that program, but I also find it a little curious--I never had the impression that Eteri's skaters got to dictate their music choices like that. I'd think most coaches/choreographers would push a first-year senior to stick with Twilight for the exhibition. But with jumps and components like Kostornaia's, maybe they thought it wouldn't matter much what she skated to?

How does the Russian’s off-ice dance instructor fit into the scheme of things, in terms of having input into the choreography? Does he work with the skaters to help them emote or anything once they have their programs? He seems like he focusses on that in the dance classes.

It's been easy to predict who'd be winners in this field. Yuzuru Hanyu was the clear gold medallist here, too bad Rika didn't have her 4S, but I'll wait for 4CC and Worlds for her to get them ready. Kostornaia won deservedly, she could probably edge out Trusova in the Final, unless Rika gets her jumps and everything else together in two weeks. Sui and Han...Dave, Sui isn't a queen. She's called 'The Empress' by fans, and Han is definitely an Emperor. I'm surprised you haven't heard. Currently, no one can match Papadaki and Cizeron.
