@@TheSkatingLesson Yuma showed good fighter's character coming back from that SP: a bit all over with jumps (not my favorite choreography), but hey - as long as those jumps give you points to win, that's the game. Thank you guys for another awesome episode! (Dave, I love your sweater.) I have to comment on living in Texas outside the major cities (which I enjoy). I mean no disrespect to Texans, but as lifelong New Englanders my husband and I moved to central TX about 9 years ago and stayed for almost exactly a year. It was like a foreign country. We knew it was not for us almost right away, but I also got pregnant almost right away, and he had to figure out another job situation back in MA (where we've been ever since), so it took a year. I will say that the low cost of living and lack of state income tax were good things, as was the awesome Mexican food and amazing bbq. But it was such a strange place. He actually had to study and take a test about Texas before he could get a TX medical license. I asked him about it today and it seems he blocked the entire experience out. But I remember. We were about an hour north of Austin in a city filled with fast food and strip malls. It feels like another lifetime. It wasn't that it was awful, but people were really into religion, guns, and cattle ranches. It was all so foreign to me. And super HOT. And I got attacked by fire ants while planting a garden - not fun!

As far as up-and-coming Canadian ladies go, Aurora is really talented and was looking very promising in her domestic competitions at the start of the season, but she's been plagued with recurring groin injuries basically for the last two years, and that interrupted her fall international plans again. She was clearly struggling to get back into competing at Challenge, but I hope things will have improved by nationals. If there was more distance between the junior and senior ladies events a la Japan and Russia, I suspect Kaiya Ruiter would be doing both (she was too young to go to the Youth Olympics); she'll be debuting senior in the Olympic season.

I have similar thoughts on US pairs. Alexa and Chris are like the American version of Tarasova and Morozov, in that you don’t quite know what you’ll get, but they’re our most talented and classic looking pair. They were strong early in the season and typically outscore the other US pairs with one or two bigger mistakes. They’re our best pair, but I hope they don’t put pressure on themselves to have to make it to Worlds or else. They have to be patient with their coaching changes, and I believe he indeed had an injury because his wrist was taped for shows. I hope they’re at Worlds but it’s not going to be easy against the Lion King soundtrack and Cain and LeDuc who are good but sometimes get very inflated scores at home for elements that are serviceable for a team with little height difference but not the most elite.

it's the active ingredient in Sudafed- intended use is for flu medicine but you can use it to make methamphetamine which is why its sale is restricted. Sorry for the random comment but I did a lab report paper on it a few weeks back (I'm a biochemistry undergrad) and thought I'd share that 🤣 In all seriousness though it's not surprising that some battling anorexia use drugs like pseudoephedrine- I took sudafed when I had the freshers flu and could barely manage a cup of soup my appetite was so low.

I wish we could send the 3 best US pairs from this season (Knierims, Cain/LeDuc, and Denney/Frazier) to 4 Continents before picking a World team so they can be judged on foreign soil without the US crowd response to D/F's Circle of Life music coming into play. I actually think a World team of a healthy Knierims and Cain/LeDuc could possibly knock on the door of earning 3 spots given the international pairs field this season. But the only way to have a chance at that is if we send pairs with a lot of scoring potential, which D/F and especially K/O don't have. It's discouraging when a team like K/O get huge scores domestically for pair skating that would never hold up in a World field. Hopefully the Knierims are healthy and the US takes advantage of their talent and potential while they still can. Alexa especially is a rare talent among US pairs and they belong on a World stage. At the very least, those 3 pairs should be at 4 Continents to give the US its best chance at good scores.

The men's FS at the Winter Youth Olympic Games was a lot of fun to watch actually. Kagiyama was third after the SP because he ran out of space on his triple-triple combo and hit the boards but came back - from a 7-point deficit - to beat Mozalev in the FS. He actually deserved to win by an even larger margin than he did considering the fact that he did two 3As and two quads and had excellent choreography and skating skills whereas Mozalev botched his 3As and has an unforgivably bad FS program (not necessarily his fault, but still … the music cuts are awful). It was fun too because numerous people (including myself) were abusing the commentator Chris Howarth during the live feed for underestimating Kagiyama while overhyping the two Russian skaters. Kagiyama - whom he kept pronouncing Kajiyama - skated last and Chris seemed to think he was battling for a bronze medal with Rakic who has no 3As and no quads. Even after Kagiyama skated, Chris was wondering if he maybe had a chance of beating Samsanov for the silver medal. Well, he did beat Samsanov - by almost 24 points. There was no question that was going to happen. The question was whether he'd beat Mozalev and luckily the judges did their job and awarded Kagiyama with enough points to vault into first. Chris clearly didn't seem to be aware of who Kagiyama was or that, for example, he recently outscored both Shoma Uno and Yuzuru Hanyu at the Japanese Nationals. I understand that these commentators are probably busy doing various paying gigs, but it was still inexcusable how much he underestimated Kagiyama and I wasn't the only one to think this.

Hey Dave...what skates did you buy for Michael? I haven’t skated in a decade but am thinking about picking it back up. Interested in a decent entry skate that doesn’t break the bank until I understand if it will fit back into my schedule enough to justify dropping more money.

So I’ve now watched Cheer twice as well....Thanks Dave! But...I have to admit....Gabbi’s parents give me the creeps. Her mom is absolutely over the top and her dad is just....well.....using his daughter for financial gain. But it’s soooooo good! I feel like the docu-series did a really good job at portraying everyone exactly as they should have been portrayed. Good stuff.

Y'all really calling Gabi Butler out of shape?? She's a 22 year old adult woman now, so no, of course she doesn't weigh 80 pounds anymore like she did when she was a literal *child* on SMOED, but she is muscular and very fit and in incredible shape. They way y'all talk about women's bodies on this show can be so harmful sometimes. Like last year it was Tuk needs to lose 10 pounds if she wants higher PCS, now this year you're complaining about Tuk losing power in her skating because she lost weight 🙄

Wow at the segment over Texas. Cried a little on the inside at the mention of Texas History. But also had no idea my hometown had Worlds Gymnastic Center??! You learn something new everyday I guess. But hey, if you think cheerleading in Texas is interesting, check out drill team culture. It's kind of like NFL style cheerleading.

The ancient biblical story of Salome was used in an opera. During Jesus' earthly ministry in Palestine, Herod Antipas ruled as Tetrarch under the Roman Empire. Herod stole his brother's wife Herodias. Herodias' daughter from her first marriage, Salome was young (said to be about 15), beautiful and a renowned dancer. Jesus' cousin John the Baptist was hated by Herodias because John publicly denounced the marriage to her first husband's brother. While John was imprisoned, Herod hosted a grand banquet. His drunken guests called for Salome to dance for them. Herod summoned Salome who performed the Dance of the Seven Veils. After, Herod said before his guests that he would grant Salome anything she asked, up to half of his kingdom. Upon Herodias urging, Salome requested the head of John the Baptist be delivered to her on a tray. Herod ordered the execution of John and the head was brought to Salome and Herodias on a tray.

Why didn't the US send Alysa to the Youth Olympics? I guess the Nationals were too close, but that is bad scheduling by the US Fed. The Youth OLYMPICS are eligible for the Season's Best List and World Standings List and all other countries know that and sent their best eligible skaters.
