This week, the top skaters in Europe headed to Estonia for the 2022 European Figure Skating Championships. Team Tutberidze swept the podium in the women's event with Kamila Valieva, Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova battling it out against Loena Hendrickx and Ekaterina Kurakova. Russia's pairs were supreme, with Mishina and Galliamov, Tarasova and Morozov and Boikova and Kozlovskii putting on a clinic for the rest of the world. In the men's event, Mark Kondtratiuk, Deniss Vasiljevs, Daniel Grassl and Kevin Aymoz stood out among the field. Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin earned lower scores than they have this season in the dance event. It was a good day for Montreal, as Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz earned a spot at the 2022 Olympic Games over Sara Hurtado and Kirill Khaliavin. Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson also impressed in the rhythm dance. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

Timestamps continued: 3:30-7:13 the infamous Eteri Pyramid is back and rightfully so. This event was all about Eteri keeping it real. Ladies (Europeans): 3:43 Kamila Valieva, insanely solid in the short program so much so that I did not expect the mistakes she made in the free, albeit minor there were a few costly errors but she was so above everyone else that it didn’t matter. Better here than imploding at the Olympics (remember the free program at the 2018 Worlds post Olympics Alina Zagitova). 4:07 Anna Shcherbakova, missed the “cascade” in the short program which was a costly error but in the end it didn’t matter she did her job in the free. The free program is growing on me immensely. I didn’t expect the quad to be done as well. I watched the entire ladies event and the last two groups of Ice Dance. 4:24 jumped to pairs for a hot second, Tarasova and Morozov beating one of the Moskvina teams but could not beat Mishina/Galliamov. 5:05 jumped to mens with either Georgian men coached by Eteri. Most notably with I forgot his name lol. I’ll come back in revision lol 5:35 back to ladies with Trusova, I expected some mistakes but she missed BOTH quad lutz combos. Costly. Downgraded 4Lz. Missed trixel in short. I felt underwhelmed by her performances here. Better to have a rough event here than at the Olympics where it REALLY counts. Eteri wants 1,2,3 she didn’t have it last time because she only had 2 ladies and Sotskova was the third and not coached by Eteri

@@1chienandalou at her best Aliona is superior to Kamila except for spins. Even then Aliona spins are nice to look at too, Kamila is jist more flexible so she can make more interesting positions (interesting does not mean always good or better than your standard positions). Aliona skating skills, jumps' height and springiness, and her character on ice are things that I missed the most

I was so happy about that! 🎊 He came into the season like a beast. I never would have thought he could do this, either. Also, he doesn't skate like a carbon copy of Stephane anymore. And I like his hair the way it is. When he has it cut shorter, he looks too boyish to me. His hair is thick, and he has the bone structure, so he gets away with it. I enjoyed watching a bunch of the skaters that had scored ahead of him in the SP, lose their placement one by one, until he sat in bronze position. That's actually one of my favorite things to watch in a competition, as long as it benefits me. Like at Worlds when I was so angry that Bradie got 9th, and then I watched the girls drop like flies until Karen was in 4th 😁.

@@msmo2060 i think people are hating on the judges for ignoring her mistakes and giving her super inflated components. And hating on Danny G for choreographing junior level boring routines for her. Anna herself is a lovely girl with great interpretation skills, musicality and amazing willpower. I don’t think anyones hating on Anna personally, it’s hard to dislike her I believe. It’s just that some skaters like Kaori, Wakaba and Satoko are so many levels above the Russians in PCS but the judges choose to devalue their component value by giving junior-level routines the same PCS scores. Loena is another example of unfairness - she gets scored to the same level as Sasha even though it’s clear that she deserves to be above her and Anna in both PCS and some GOE elements. In the past, PCS of skaters grew gradually over a skater’s 8 year career. The Russians jump from 63 to 74 PCS in the matter of a year. Yuna Kim for example used to get way lower PCS back when she was 18, it took her 6 years to get it up. It’s just unfair treatment if Russians. Even more, the Tutberidze girls. Liza should get way higher GOE for jumps given her textbook perfection technique.

It is so unfortunate that Trusova is not at 100% due to injuries and very unlikely to get the gold at this point, but don’t we all hope for a miracle to happen? There is no fun watching the Olympic fully knowing who will win and I cannot be the only one who hopes that a dark horse will surprise us all.

Daniel indeed comes across as a lovely guy in interviews. Unfortunately he developed a concerning heart condition following a covid infection last year, and said he has had a difficult time getting his programmes and stamina back after being away from the ice for a while. He also said he has to take extra care as his heart issues make him vulnerable to covid. Proud of what he has accomplished at these Europeans despite all these worries, I believe in him and hope he will stay healthy and keep going :)

I haven’t seen either live but even on video it’s clear to me StepBuk improved so much this season. Their rhythm dance in earlier Grand Prix vs RusNats and Europeans seems both faster and more precise. And their free too and like you say, their patterns are bigger as well. SinKats are great but their programs don’t engage me as much this season. I agree with you to not write off StepBuk. I find the two pairs very very close in technical and presentation overall.

I think what the ice dance situation tells us is that USFS needs to put both ice dance teams in the team event, not just because it's what is fair, but because it gives them chance to go up against the Russians and Canadians and see how things pan out and what little adjustments they can make before the dance competition.

Neither American team with win an individual bronze with those terrible Free Dances. Piper & Paul can walk through that door. Not sure why Marie France allowed these programs. I think that it's the fair thing to do to have both teams skate, but I'm hearing that they give the higher-ranked team the chance to decide whether they will skate one or both programs. I do know that they did that with the Shibutanis, who chose to skate both programs themselves.

@@etherealtb6021 I think with teams as senior as H/D and C/B, Marie France is not in a position to deny a program that they want to do, unless it was something completely insane, then I can see her telling them that she won't assist them. I believe that she threatened Virtue and Moir with that when she didn't want to do Moulin Rouge at first. She told them to get another choreographer. Obviously they brought her around.

I have never known an athlete in any sport with the mental grit and strength of Anna Shcherbakova. I thought she was done for and we were seeing the true end to her career but nope! She pulled it out the bag and being there was incredible. The energy and charisma of her skating is incredible and I’m shocked at just how good she is everytime I watch her live. Watching Kamila after was weirdly disappointing, which gave me this weird feeling that she’s peaked at the wrong time. She was so good at RusNats, while here, not so good, in training too. I just wonder if they’ve got the timing wrong. Edit: not sure if anyone is interested but my Russian team event line up is: Women’s - Valieva short, Shcherbakova free Men’s - Kondratuik Ice dance - S/K rhythm dance, S/B free Pairs - M/G

Am I the only North American that thought that the judging of the 2002 Olympic long program really could have gone either way between Russians Berezhnya and Sikhuralize and Canadians Sale and Pelltier, and had no problem with the original result of 5 judges to 4 in favor of the Russian team? And that gets a little cringy while watching Meddling and reliving Scott Hamilton’s crusade? And when the docudrama spends a large chunk of time to erect a sob story around Jamie Sale growing up with divorced parents? Not that I don’t give her credit for her fierce determination, but placed next to Berezhnya’s life, this move to gain sympathy comes across as extraordinarily petulant. And I don’t know who’s idea it was to dramatize certain parts of the story, but, to me, it really detracts from the level of credibility we usually associate with something billed as a documentary,.

Such an exciting week of skating! My hot takes: - Mark Kondratiuk is the most entertaining skater and deserves his crazy PCS because he commits 110% to every program and performs the hell out of it, even if he cannot hit a nice position or point a toe to save his life. I enjoy that his coach reposts fan art of him as Jesus with a whip. What's not to love!? - M/G should do both segments in the team event, none for T/M. They cannot be trusted, even Eteri throwing death stares from the boards can't scare them into doing clean programs. - Daniel Grassl should get negative GOE for having his mouth open during his jumps and making his face look like the terrifying ghostkiller mask from 'SCREAM'

In fairness to Eteri as well this was the best T/M have skated in a very long time. She is clearly good at 1. Preparing her skaters. 2. Learning the rule book. 3. Politicking. I can see why Trusova and Aliona went back to her. I don’t care for badmouthing students and their parents. Encouraging skating with broken hands whatever is going on with food. I felt people were unfair blaming her for not being in the Kiss and Cry in the short with Anna and Trusova . That’s common with multiple skates and while Vallieva is the favorite people forget she is a first year senior

Yes I agree when tarasova and morozov are clean they are Russia’s best chance to try and beat the Chinese because sorry but mishina and Galliamov are nowhere near the Chinese level so I think even if they weren’t skating with eteri they would have gotten a little push because as much they seem to let us down, when they are on they are really on. However I don’t think them skating clean had anything to do with eteri. They have been with her for so long and have not been able to get their act together, it was just a good day for them I think. Also have you noticed how much friendlier and warmer Vladimir is being to evgenia. Since like late 2019 I noticed he was so cold to her and many people were saying that’s why she was always making mistakes because it’s hard to skate with someone who is not supporting you but now he actually looks at her at the end of their program and seems to be much nicer, maybe that’s why her skating is improving😭

Sorry, but Eteri Tutberidze not mentioned, like you said - if Tuktamysheva was with me should be doing quads all the time. She just told : "There is was a time when I was wondering, why she doesn't jump quads. I saw she's able to. No, I wouldn't invite her. And not because she's not interesting to me, but simply due to the ethical reasons, there is such things as a trainer's ethics". There is a big difference. Thanks for the interesting discussion as always!
@toxic-low-key-ghost7934

did he do that in the sp? Also to be fair at least marie france has the french who are obviously leagues ahead and to the general skating fans, ice dance is much harder to understand than any other discipline. So even if those who know ice dance can see that marie france has a hold on the judges, to a lot of people, they dont know. Unlike the ladies where even the lesser educated ones on skating can see when someone falls, when someone's spins travel, when someone's goe is too high, when their technique is wrong. I know its nothing big but with the top ice dance teams, its much harder to tell who is really not good and whos deserving of their scores compared to ladies. So i actually dont think this can go on for much longer. All was going well for her until russian nationals where people just had enough. I was so suprised to see diana in 8th after the sp, seems like the judges arent protecting her as much anymore. What im trying to say is more people know about the eteri bonus now, and its glaring how much its infected skating, so to protect the sport they are going to need to do something about it I hope that after these olympics she will be no more

If I might comment and compared Dennis with Jason since both are having almost the same tech contents, IMO Dennis did not get the same level as Jason's appreciation for GOE and PCS. I felt Dennis GOE for his well executed jumps, spins and steps were small and PCS were not enough compared to what he delivered and gave in both SP and FP. That's how things are because he's coming from smaller fed and that is sad thing.

Agree. It is not the skaters' fault but it is hard to root for anyone who benefits from cheating or biased judging. Also depends how they handle it. Patrick Chan was arguably better than his peers but when people criticized his wins over people who skated clean like Ten or Takahashi, it was the lack of humility or acknowledgement that others skated well that was so off-putting. Still one of my favourite skaters but made me like Ten and Takahashi even more lol And Nathan getting such high PCS when Yuzuru or Jason have better skating skills makes me not want Nathan to win. I dont want him to skate bad just want fairness
@louisehancock324

@@youarestronger Nathan does not get over scored compared to Jason or Hanyu. Jason is one of my favorite skaters, but unfortunately, Jason does not have the high technical content like Hanyu and Nathan. He leaves a lot on the ice when in competition against Nathan, otherwise he is scored highly when competing.
@youarestronger
@youarestronger 2 жыл бұрын
@@louisehancock324 Nathan's transitions vanish from programs. What Yuzuru does in and out of jumps is substantially more difficult and requires so much more control and clean landings. Nathan hops out of his jumps before you even get to see a running edge. What Jason does, no one else can do. He should always be far ahead of Nathan in PCS. And there is ji rule saying if you jump more quads you get free pcs points. If Jason's PCS is so much better, shouldn't he be getting free quad points. Nathan gets high GOE on elements others do better. Sorry not fair.
@louisehancock324
@louisehancock324 2 жыл бұрын
@@youarestronger All three of the mentioned skaters have specific good skills. Hanyu has good transitions but does not cover the ice as well as Nathan or Jason and his energy depletes as his program goes on.Nathan does not have the level of artistry as Hanyu or Jason. We cannot ignore the reality that this is sport and technical scores usually determine the winners in this scoring system. No matter how great Jason or any other skaters component scores are, skaters that perform multiple higher level jumps will win. I am not saying this is right, but a current reality.

I'm with ya Jonathan, not a fan of Dismal World either. WAY, WAY, WAY TOO crowded for me. There should be a limit to how many people can be in the park at one time, and OMG the frigging price to get in. Not for me and I'm a roller coaster fanatic, but I ain't paying that much to maybe get to ride three coasters in 10 hours at the part, due to the waiting times.

I adore Kevin the same way I adore Shomo. There is just so endearing, heart-on-the-sleeve about them. You can't not root for them. And Kevin just FEELS and BELIEVES in his work - you just buy in and go with him, especially this year's FS.

Just a note. It is 39 lashes. I listened to the album constantly when it came out as a kid. I think JCS was my main source of religious education as a kid, because those sermons and confirmation classes weren’t doing the job, lol. Also Paul in second Corinthians 11:24 says “forty lashes less one”.

Trusova is now the Evel Knievel of quads. Time to lean in. Attempt 10 quads in the long, land 4. Win gold.

Are you guys watching Jr Rusnats? Can't wait for the Eteri vs Plushenko showdown. Do you think Plush gonna have better results now that Etei has her hands full with the Olympics. Also waiting for Kagapol (Kaganovskaya/Angelopol) they will save us from Diana Davis in the future.

Yes I do cause plushenko skaters seem to actually have good technique. I think he has seen the mistakes eteri is making and will not be teaching the same technique to his skaters

I'm a big fan of my Beloved King Plu; and he's on the way to become a promising coach; but don't forget Davidov's students ( especially 14yo Samodelkina who landed 3 quadruple jumps + 3Axel.)

My thoughts listening to this: Let's have a moment of appreciation and celebration for skaters (for example, Yuzuru, Jason, Liza with her jump quality) who ignore the out of whack judging and still aim to judge themselves by their own standards and develop to meet them. Skaters shouldn't need to be their own judging system to this extent, but it's still just appreciated. This also for coaches as well that aren't going for the cheated tricks. I'm just genuinely putting hope out into the universe for skaters like these to continue to exist against the current.

I've been thinking. Maybe Jason Brown should employ the Trusova Method to move up in the rankings. Just make all the jumps "quads" and that way the falls won't really matter.

I remember in 2017-2018 all 3 US dance teams were about even. I don’t think USFS was pushing for 1 team over an other. I really hope they split the dance for the team event.
