This week, Alysa Liu announced that she was moving and not moving to Colorado while the top skaters headed to Russia for the sixth stop on the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating. Kamila Valieva, Maya Khromykh and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva battled it out in the women's event. Mariah Bell may have kept her Olympic dream alive. Meanwhile, Mikhail Kolyada lost to Morisi Kvitelashvili at the Rostelecom Cup. The Russian commentators were not pleased with his performance. Meanwhile, Kazuki Tomono earned the hearts of the crowd with an ending that gets us every time. Meanwhile, Hawayek and Baker, Mishina and Galliamov, Moore-Towers and Marinaro, and Roman Sadovsky did the most to make this an Olympic season to remember. We break it all down and more on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

Valievas bolero not my favorite but you cannot deny her skills. Ice coverage, speed, extensions, body line, technical prowess...wow
@biscuitcase83
@biscuitcase83 2 жыл бұрын
Agree with most of that apart from...her jump technique isn't great. She gets great height and distance, and thankfully seems to have straightened out her air position, but the Eteri technique is still very noticeable. She's landing her big scoring jumps at this point more consistently than Trusova, Shcherbakova and Kostornaia though

It would be interesting to see what she could do with actual well choreographed programs with well chosen music. Bolero in particular just leaves me cold, it’s a hard watch. Her body line could also be much better presented in less chaotic costumes. And she’s fast but scratchy and her jump technique is really quite wonky, especially her flip & Lutz & the way she lurches in between combo jumps. These are all things that should factor into her score but don’t. And that’s a shame, because she could be even better if she was given honest judgement with areas to improve.

Maybe Roman will get the second spot for Canada. I think that Mariah Bell has helped herself with these free skates. I am concerned with Alyssa Liu chances of making the Olympic team next year because she switched coaches. Also, when is Mikhail Koylada going back to White Crow for free skate. No time like the present. Congratulations to Jason Brown on making the Grand Prix Final.

Am I imagining it or did Dave for the first time ever actually pay Daria Pavliuchenko a modest compliment? Daria is talented and she looks nice on the ice. Yes they are a quirky, unconventional team and I'm thankful for that. More entertaining to watch than the other 3 Russian teams most of the time. I think they get less acknowledgment than they deserve.

I have never appreciated M/G and this competition was no exception. I have nothing but praise for their tech abilities, but their skating is a non-event for me and their material is totally disconnected from who they are as skaters. P/K are far more exciting and watchable. I'd have put them at least a few points ahead after the short.

Ok, I have to add here one of my moments of the week: Matteo Rizzo not flopping and skating his heart out! I think he deserves at least a mention this week, guys. I love him. 🙂 Also: Rostelecom judges were dying to help Zhenia get to the GPF and he did flop. The massively engineered score for Kazuki so he'd finish behind Misha. Morisi's puzzling rise, of course. Tamara Moskvina eating ice cream and just being the bubbliest bean. Picking apart Kamila's great, but certainly less than perfect performance. Trying to guess if Danny G's hair is still only his own hair. Also: I don't care for Liza, but in a world where scores make no sense at all, I say good for her! I mean, Liza could be the reason Eteri doesn't dominate the podium. I have no idea how that happened, but that's power. Also: I also think KMT lost her mojo. I know people don't talk about it.......... but she made the decision to end a successful partnership, then watched her close competitors D/R win an OBM, then looked at her own past outlook and her own choice and, man, I am convinced she was shaken. Maybe even watching AS win OGM with only a 4 year partnership, when she thought the only way for a long, successful career was to change partners when she did. Then even as SC's leading team, their technical limit was clearly set, and I think she had dreamt a lot higher and is not finding the energy right now for the reality she's in. The fact that J/R appeared in scene, I think it affected MM a lot more, bc he's very close to TM and probably indulged in a few pity parties, and also bc he knows he's the weak link and lost his confidence to defend his position as Canadian champion. You add MM's unconfidence to KMT's doubts/lack of energy and it's a hot mess that is really a snow ball where each one's bad attitude feeds off of the other's. It's brutal, but I don't see them getting it together, honestly. Also: I didn't watch ice dance, but I know I hated Niki's shirts. All of them. With passion.

Roman kind of proved me wrong here by not being a flop, and I would send him to the Olympics over Nam at this point, but the technical specialist at Rostelecom was extremely lenient. He made very few underrotation or edge calls for anyone, and at least a couple of Roman’s jumps were definitely under. If Shin Amano had been the caller, Roman’s score would have been much lower. I hope he works on the underrotations and doesn’t think he’s fine just because they weren’t called here.

Mariah’s a beautiful skater, but if you had told me 8 years ago that (potentially) two of the US women in line to get Olympic spots-Karen and Mariah-would not have consistent triple triples-at least in practice, I would have been surprised. Especially with the way other countries have progressed technically. They are lucky that judges seem to like them, and Mariah in particular that this was a high scoring event. It’s been pointed out on Twitter how close Mariah and Wakaba’s free skate scores were, even though we know scoring across events varies, it stings a bit. Also, if Mariah makes it, I hope that he tries to detract the media from it becoming “the Adam show”-yes, we love the both of them, but I kept getting annoyed by the clip showing up in my feed of Mariah’s 2020 nationals performance with Adam miked up.

I think Maddie and Roman both made a big step this week toward their chances of making Olympic team. International judges love Roman, he has easy speed, great spins and seems to be peaking. Madeline proved that she is a fighter coming back in her free program. She also has a more difficult jump combo and seems to thrive under pressure more so than Gabi Daleman. Also, interesting that Michael Slipchuk was there this week and seemed pleased with both of them. As for Kirsten and Michael I’m starting to worry they won’t even make the team, only because Evelyn and Trennt have a history of peaking at nationals. Anyone remember them beating out Lubov and Charlie not that long ago for a spot on the world team? Don’t count them out.

I think they need to put H/D in the RD and C/B in the free. It's the obvious move. Both teams have earned it and the scores bear out this move. Nathan and Vincent for the men. Alysa for women, Alexa and Brandon for pairs. It makes the most sense. And if for some bonkers reason Nathan wants to do both, I'm sure another lady or pair will happily step in. None of our women are competitive anyway, and I think another pair like Ashley and Tim could hold up in a short or free for us. C/B are stars - that alien program is going to be iconic by the Olympics.

IMO, Kamila's Bolero has gotten better. When she does all her jumps, it looks mind-blowing. Just the overall impression of the program is overwhelming. Last year it was a mess. Being a fan of Liza, I really want her to make the team, but right now there's little chance. It seems possible as long as one more of Eteri's girls gets injured, and that's definitely not something I'd like to happen. Honestly, it is heartbreaking that there are so many good skaters that just don't get the opportunity to show what they can do during major competitions, especially considering the fact they have spent a decade or two working hard to get ready for this.
@DeepSeas..
@DeepSeas.. 2 жыл бұрын
Tuktamysheva is solidly in the third spot with room for improvement. If the decision were made today, she’d be on the team. If she can continue to be consistent and place in the top 3 at the GPF and Russian Nationals, she’s going. With the current state of all the Eteri injuries, those podium finishes are more than doable for her. It’s basically in her hands whether she’s on the team, which is the best position she could hope for considering Eteri’s influence.
@72586jejones
@72586jejones 2 жыл бұрын
I think her chance is as good as any Russian lady not named Kamila, and that is only if Kamy remains injury free, which I hope she does. If the team was chosen today, it would be Kamila, Anna and Liza, no question. Anna could end up in the hospital at any moment, Sasha is a huge question mark, Maiia is not reliable and Alena only has one ultra C element that is not reliable in competition. Anything can happen!
@margaritadanova4764

@@DeepSeas.. If we look at Rostelecom Cup, Maya would have come second if not for her missed jump in the short skate. So I wouldn't be so sure. @@72586jejones Yes, I think I'd love to agree with you, yet Maya (or Maiia) can do quads, unlike Liza. And if she does her triples in her SP, she might come second after Kamila in the Nationals. Plus her SP looks stylish, as the young lady feels the rhythm of the music, imo. Anna doesn't seem to have any injuries at the moment, but neither did Sasha back in September. So who knows? It's all really mysterious to me, so if I were in the shoes of the guys of the RusFed, I wouldn't bet on anyone just yet, since it's pointless right now.

I have thoughts about the pairs! Disclaimer: due to time limitations I was only able to watch the second group in pairs in this whole entire astonishing 4-discipline event. I apologize if I missed out on important information, and also if I use the wrong turn of phrase in this rant. I liked M/G’s free from last year better than this year’s. Last year, the impression that I had of them was that they had innovative transitions that fitted well with the program and I really loved that. I think this year’s didn’t feel as inspiring to me mostly because the transitions I associated with We Are the Champions are being used on an entirely different background music. Honestly, they vary in skating speed very little, and they’re not doing slow strokes that gain them tons of speed which I feel would be more appropriate for the music. They move fast, which is why I think last year’s program was better for them. Fantastic win overall! P/K was interesting for me. I felt like their free created more of a moment than M/G and B/K, and by that I mean the build of the program. They had a pretty good skate and I was impressed! They, like B/K, were never my favorite Russian team, though, and I thought long and hard about why. I think it’s because both teams give me the same impression as Kamila Valieva’s skating. They have great positions, great extension, but they kind of “snap” into it? I’m not sure it’s the right description for it, but it’s kind of like skate, skate, skate, BAM! HERE’S A BEAUTIFUL POSITION! Like when Boikova does the twist, she pushes her free leg up after being put down on the ice in a rather abrupt manner. Not hating on them! They’re all great skaters that I admire but my favorite style is Panfilova/Rylov’s. (Her free leg is the definition of smooth ascent.) Third place was interesting. I’m not sure if I agree with the results, but I can see where the judges had the space to maneuver (besides the fact that they’re Russians and Lu/Mitrofanov aren’t). I watched them compete maybe twice before this event, and I know they’re a new pair (both used to skate singles), hence the very inconsistent throws. They disguise the rest of their pair elements relatively well, such as the very fast, smooth but short lifts. And this is where L/M lost to them, the (perceived) quality of elements. The GOE the Russians got were a bit too high, methinks, but their lifts do in fact give the impression of being more polished than L/M. I’m no expert on skating skills, so I’ll say nothing about that! It was higher than I expected with two major mistakes tho :/ After that really long rant about four skates, I want to end by saying I’m rooting for the Japanese at the finals :)))

Personally I don’t mind the big scores for a Valieva. She is really a beautiful skater that short program is so beautiful to watch. It’s not the Russian judges giving her 10s. I think the judged are latching on to her because here is a skater who can Skate beautifully and also land quads. It’s really great to see. I don’t have issue with her getting huge scores in comparison to the others. It would be sad to see her win and retire but really skating wise what a great potential champion.

On the intro: tbf I think we're all subject to cultural bias on some level, whether it is cultural influence from different eras of skating where particular styles/trends dominated or having exposure to certain media narratives, in our own formative periods of watching skating (before we learn to individuate with our own opinions)! I think it's a lot easier to see artistic preferences as cultural when you're outside of the culture than in. ETA as I'm still watching: The Sambo 70 situation perfectly summarised in that pyramid. Oh no, Dave you now have put it into my head that even if Liza wins, Eteri still wins if they don't have a reason to change the age. Also: Mark's commentary on the prerotations were excellent. Who is landing the most ratified quads in the senior ladies on record now - is it Valieva? I have a soft spot for Kazuki Tomono since his Chroma program, he's really bringing it with his performances this season!!
