As a Korean, the best part of this competition was the Estonian audience. They were soo supportive to every single skater all the time. Also it was so touching to see some local fans who brought their hand-made banners written in Korean or Japanese.

I’m not exactly sure why her surname was translated into Lee because that’s not what the Korean character says. Anyway, Hay-Een would be a closer pronunciation for her name. My own moment of the week was watching this video :). I had a massive national exam this past week so had to put a hiatus on watching figure skating. I missed 4CC, but now I’m back, so this recap was spectacular. Also, the moment I came out of exams I opened up Instagram and lo and behold! Panfilova and Rylov are training again! You're correct about Lee Haein's name pronounciation. I don't know why this surname is translated into Lee but it's a standard translation of all Korean Lee ("Eee" 이) surnames.
@Jane_Doe_8909
@Jane_Doe_8909 2 жыл бұрын
The reason why Haein Lee 's last name isn't written as "Eee" is because it had an L before in Korean which was eventually dropped because of the phonetical evolution of the language, kind of like "facer > hacer" from Latin to Spanish. Even though the L was dropped a loooong time ago, the transliteration of the surname stayed the same

Mai deserved to be named to the Olympic team, end of story. I'm so sad for her :(. When you look at body of work, it's really not even close between her and Mana. If Japan wants to give Mana experience and exposure, send her to 4CC, Jr Worlds and Worlds. On any given day, Mai could (and has this season) beat Kaori or Wakaba.
@bettybleu12

Completely agree. She couldn’t perform any better this season. When she is so consistent, you can rely on her to deliver. My heart breaks for her since she was the one who placed 4th in worlds before 2018 Olympics and qualified Japan for 2 slots in the Olympics. She is always the alternate. She’s won over so many people due to this history and how she came back from her illness to perform so great. We love you Mai!

Mana deserves to go, not Mai. JSF has pushed Mai all season and the judges have consistently ignored her URs and inflated her GOE. Mana has been scored very harshly all season. She is much more dynamic and is part of the future. Mai had her chance and blew it. This is sport, not a fairy tale.

I love watching 4CC even though it arguably had weaker fields on some of the disciplines, I particularly enjoyed men and women. When watching 4CC women, I could not help myself comparing the scores with Euros. The way top skaters being prepped up in the Euros vs 4CC, it's not fair. I still think it's a mistake that KSU sending their Oly team when their women were being treated that way. The SP was particulary very egregious, the FP was better (missing lot of calls though). But the pcs distributions in both segments compared to the Euros women were not comparable, like they're judged in different universe. I found myself enjoying the skating more when I didn't pay attention to the scores.

@@mariajesseannegloria3026 yes watching the performance was uplifting cause IMO 4CC ladies have more stronger SS overall. But I felt angry/helpless looking at the SP results, the GOE was so low and PCS what made me disappointed the most. In Euros, a 3A fall got 35 while 3Lz fall no combo got 36. In 4CC the highest PCS was 33... outrageous. Same with FP, Sasha Trusova with a jump drill program 2 falls got 69.55 which was higher than any ladies in 4CC. At the end I came to realization that I just need to let it go and just enjoy the performance.

@@yohanes2034 I didn’t mind the scores in terms of PCS. Yuna Kim’s SP at the 2010 Olys only had 33 points. She got around 36 at Sochi. The women’s getting around 30-33 here at 4CC made sense. The SS were comparable to Yuna’s generation but not yet better. Which is why Euros made me feel sick. They mask their bad edges and lack of blade control with speed and flexibility. Anna’s lack of lines and hunched form gets 36. Kami gets 37-38 with speed. As aptly observed by others doing rippons sort of influenced their PCS. As to GOEs, there were some GOEs that felt too low for me. Like Yelim Kim’s rippon 3Lz… IMO, her rippons are textbook as compared to Eteri girls rippons. She has clear outside edge, she uses her toe pick. She does not overly pre-rotate or spin the first rotation on ice, she doesn’t lose her axis even with her hands in the air, sufficient height and distance, great and smooth flow for the landing. Her highest GOE for that amazing jump? +2 in the SP (granted she made a mistake on the 3T that was in combination with the 3Lz) and for the Free, only 4 judges gave her plus 4 while the rest were plus 3 on the solo rippon 3Lz and only two judges gave her +4 on the rippon 4Lz in combination. But I can still accept that. But at Euros? Only 3 judges gave Kamila +3 during the SP. Anna had relatively fairer GOEs ranging from +2 to +4 for her rippon 3Lz. At the end of the day, it’s the PCS that I’m disgusted with at Euros.

In the clarification of the levels for the step sequences, it defines the number of turns needed for minimum (5), simple (7), variety (9), complexity (11). They have to be CLEAN turns and that’s where they loose levels when turns are not counted as clean. So if your edges are off on a cluster, you loose the cluster and the number of turns.

Europeans is easier travel for many of those skaters. 4ccs always involves crazy long travel days for someone. In an Olympic year you could schedule 4ccs better but the travel will always be a problem.
@yohanes2034
@yohanes2034 2 жыл бұрын
It will always like that and will never change since 4CC area coverage is huge. With Euros, most competitors just need to fly from 1 European country to another while 4CC it will always be a problem to some skaters. If it's held in North America then Asian skaters will struggle and vice versa. This year 4CC could be good if it's still being held in China. They don't need to go back and immediately can enter Beijing bubble. But with it being moved to Estonia has made it harder time zone wise.

Rino was clearly the most talented skater of the competition in her LP. Mai is a great sentimental story, and has been getting very favorable scoring and tech calls this whole season. But, as you said, she is a good student and isn't dynamic at all. The JSF made a rare good decision to send Mana to Oly and Worlds. The tech caller here was very lenient on rotation, especially with Audrey and Mai. When some of the Korean girls and Rino would jump and actually finish their rotation in the air, unlike the aforementioned pair, it was like a breath of fresh air.

The SP was strict and borderline unfair. Like many good jumps received small GOE, ex. yelim 3Lz+3T got only 1.3 and many other good solo jumps barely broke 1.0 GOE. The FP was normal GOE wise but the TP call was lenient to all skaters. PCS still not yet there though Re. Rino when she can hit it cleanly she is great. It's shame that her start in the senior season is hampered with injuries. Korean skaters have the best 3-3, they have rhythm, springiness, and pop
@Plaspos

JSF was right to send Mana to olympics but it was a big mistake to send her to worlds. Mai is one of the most consistent skaters in the world and has placed top 5 at every event since turning senior. I love Wakaba and Mana (Waka is my favorite of all time) but neither of them are very consistent skaters and I wouldn't be surprised if JSF loses the 3rd spot with both of them on the team. Whereas with Mai + Kaori the 3rd sspot is esentially guaranteed.
@joeyartk
@joeyartk 2 жыл бұрын
@@Plaspos Actually Wakaba IS consistent when she is in good form and not injured. This year and last Olympic year she was very consistent. Her bad years were full of nagging injuries and working on 3A and jump mechanics. I wouldn't count on Mai getting the favorable judging she has been getting so far at World's. Mana is the future and needs to get experience.
@Plaspos
@Plaspos 2 жыл бұрын
@@joeyartk Wakaba was never consistent in 2017-18 or 2021-22. In 2017-18 she only landed all her jumps at 3/7 events (Lombardía, cup of China, challenge cup) and the 3S in the free skate was popped very frequently. This season she was clean at 1/3 events so far although at IDF to be fair the only mistake she had was the 3A miss in the short so I can be lenient there. More importantly though, the free skate at challenge cup was a meltdown. Mai on the other hand has 3/4 totally clean events this year. More importantly, in the entire time of her comeback (the past two seasons) she’s only missed two jumps: 3Lo -> 2Lo at Asian Trophy, 2A -> 1A at nationals. Well and two falls at Japan Open. People have been complaining about Mai’s generous scores ever since she went to senior worlds in 2017 the first time and it has continued since then, I don’t think her scoring will suddenly change at worlds.

Whereas with Mai + Kaori the 3rd spot is esentially guaranteed as this 4CC showed

Agree that they should've sent Mana to Olympics and Mai to Worlds because Mai is more consistent. Even just this season, Mai had more consistent results than Mana (and Mana's high placement at NHK can be attributed to the withdrawals of the top skaters). It was so close between them this season. And Japan already has a precedent for sending different skaters to the Olympics and Worlds (in 2018, they sent Kaori to the Olympics and Wakaba to Worlds). Since the decision has been made, I just hope Kaori, Wakaba, and Mana can secure 3 spots. Or else Japan will "punish" the skater/s who don't place well (I think JSF never really pushed for Wakaba because of her performance in 2017 Worlds which made Japan only have 2 spots at the 2018 Olympics).

Those step sequence calls were honestly bizarre, have never seen so many level 2s at a competition of this level. So different from Europeans. Turns are supposed to be 'clean.' It really stood out to me in the replay that Anna and Sasha were jumping their turns (I think Kamila's were clean though). Jun was the highlight for me here! Absolutely love both his programmes this year - such a stunning skater. I also have a real soft spot for Starr. I know she doesn't have the greatest tech content, and had a couple of really weird mistakes at the start of the free here, but there's something about her that is really engaging and draws me in, and I love watching her. The Korean girls are all generically lovely (except Hae-in, I've loved her since juniors, although she needs some better programmes, like her Firedance), but not a lot of personality. They need to work on bringing out their own style and personality more.

Didn't get to see all the performances, but am glad for Junhwan at getting his first gold medal at 4CC! Kazuki did well to place on the podium, too. Mai surprised me, but then she was consistent, and it worked out for her. She deserves the be in 1st place. Haein Lee and Yelim Kim did wonderfully as well; I have to agree about your assessment on the Korean ladies, guys. KFed tires out their skaters; it would have been better to send their Olympic skaters to the Olympics and have alternates for competitions like 4CC. You Young's 3A is inconsistent; her training plus the pandemic shutdowns have not been in her favor. I wonder if she got tired here from all those previous competitions at home. The Korean women need to find their own style of skating and pick their own music; they can't compete against the memory of their beloved idol. They need to compete against the present women if they want a chance at being 1-2-3 like the Russians. Loved watching KanaDai's Rhythm dance, even with the fall in the beginning. The korean really do need to start politicking. Like the judges weirdly always seem to be very strict with their jumps and presentation except for Young. On the good news, Eunsoo is accepted to Korea University which is one of Korea's SKY/ top uni (probably as student athlete as well), so hopefully she is not going to retire yet. I m saying this bcs people gossip a lot about her going into the entertainment industry, when she is actually the only one from the top skaters who never been to any TV/ radio shows or remotely showed any desire into that path yet.

I can't deny that I'm on of the few that believed on those rumors about Eunsoo aiming for the entertainment industry. Though it is highly likely that she won't due to the slashing incident and for how vague it got covered. The Korean public would shred her for having that kind of history when you consider the public manhunt brought to idols/actors with checkered pasts and controversy. Anyway, it was a smart choice for her to go to Korea Uni as they're the only uni that has an ice rink dedicated for figure skating.
@mix4715
@mix4715 2 жыл бұрын
@@celinevalencia9908 idk, I think the public sentiment is still on Eunsoo side in Korea for this, so if she is indeed wanting to debut as actress/idol, she would be fine. I mean the clip on NBC ( the one which is not potato level), shown that Mariah indeed saw eunsoo right before the incident and her free leg shook from the collision, she also never actually ever be that close to the board for that program in any of her actual performances. This is why to this day, I still believe they didnt get along and whether there was bullying or not idk but that incident was not as innocent as TSL and NA big skater figures claimed to be. Besides, ATS never needed Eunsoo to sell tickets like TSL claimed to be the reason for Eunsoo’s accusation of Mariah, bcs Yuna presence alone is guaranteed a success. Aside from that, Mariah also never use that incident for her ‘rise of the phoenix story’ , so I m pretty sure she herself doesnt want this to get ducked out again and this is actually quite suspicious bcs you know what would be a better story to tell than ‘'how pitiful I m from wrongly accused to rise above all that and finally achieved my dream to the Olympic ’’, I mean even Zhenya Medvedeva ( the best figure skater politician) and Adelina still tell their pitiful storyline every now and then.

It's a really wonderful homage, but Yuna was competing 8 years ago so we can save the tributes for 2040! But I do believe they could be the future of skating - they have proper technique which will survive ISU rule changes, which can't be said for other federations where entire dominance is hanging on a "pre-rotation isn't under-rotation" thread

Japan should reconsider their Olympic team if they want to set themselves up better for a medal in the team . Mai Mihara should have been selected because she’s been japans most consistent skater, especially in the long program for nearly 2 Olympic cycles and has super solid outing internationally this season, certainly better than Mana. And Daisuke and Kana would have came in 9th at Europeans and add that 2 of the top 8 teams from that competition aren’t going to Olympics.
@joeyartk
@joeyartk 2 жыл бұрын
Mai has benefitted from very generous judging this season, and that isn't guaranteed at Olys or Worlds, as Kaori found out last year. Mana has a much higher ceiling and is the future. Mai has no chance whatsoever to medal at the Olys. The Japanese put alot of emphasis on Nationals results, as Wakaba found out last Oly year.
@johnjackson3735
@johnjackson3735 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Mai definitely should have been chosen for Worlds and the Olympics and has been lowballed in scoring repeatedly. Mana is a very good skater but had tech calls overlooked in her Nationals LP and her PCS was held very close to Mai's who is a lot better in the components especially skating skills and expression. Mana is still much younger and has a lot of time to continue her impressive development. The main reason the JSF chose Mana was because she has a powerful coach Hamada who would be stuck in the position of having none of her skaters represented in the Worlds or Olympics if Mai was sent. the comment below about the overscoring is ridiculous because Mai has some of the most refined and buttery smooth and sophisticated expression that she has honed year after year. the Russian style of cramming in tons of extraneous disconnected movement reigns supreme so the Mao influenced skaters like Rika and Mai are always lowballed and degraded under this system. As far as tech calls, she is not getting generous calls at all especially compared to other skaters even on her own team like in the LP at Japan Nationals. Mai is a threat to favored others and therefore disingenuously undermined much of the time.
@yohanes2034
@yohanes2034 2 жыл бұрын
This is again very similar with Ilia over Vincent/ Jason situation. There's no right or wrong I think. In this case I think Mana has stronger case (compared to Ilia) because she competed for full season and her results with Mai is almost comparable. I could understand why Japan send the high risk high reward skater since both wouldn't be considered medal contender.
@glaznflip1501
@glaznflip1501 2 жыл бұрын
@@joeyartk I guess you’re missing my point. None of the Japanese women are super heavy medal favorites as individual given how far ahead the 3 Russian women are. However, Japan has very unique opportunity to secure a medal in team possibly a silver. I would have crafted the Olympic selection for the women based on that. I would have put Kaori in the short and Mai in the free considering Mai’s extensive consistent track record of skating clean. Wakaba is a bit of a head case I wouldn’t put her up in either segment of the team competition and neither Mana. And if there is one Japanese woman that has a chance to win a medal in the individual, barring mistakes from the Russian women, It would be Kaori. But it would have been smarter to send Mai to rest Kaori from not competing both segments of the competition.

I saw an interview somewhere that this season all the top Korean girls (the three girls here and Eunsoo Lim) are deliberately using musics that are from Yuna's iconic programs. It is indeed a deliberate tribute to Yuna. I don't know why they do this, maybe it is because this is the first Olympic since 2010 that we will not see Yuna in any form. And this is a special way to bring Yuna's legacy to this winter Olympic games. But I have to say while I was watching these programs, it reminded me Yuna's programs so much that I went straight back and watched Yuna's program right afterwards. And got to admit Yuna is still the best, none of the Korean girls' performance can touch her majesty. I think next season, the korean skaters will have their own music and unique programs.

Watch out -- Young You has a content to threat the podium in Beijing [with 3A and THREE combinations]. If she goes clean, and one of the three Russians has a bad day, there is no way the judges can thrust Kaori with her two combinations and no 3A in front of YY... Too many if's, I know... Loved Haien Lee and Yelim Kim but the most exciting to watch was Yuhana Yokoi in the free -- after such a frustrating season she finally manages to hold it together and skate cleanly the free. The most frustrating to watch is Camden Pulkinen. He's (by far) the most charismatic skater, very handsome, amazing musicality, beautiful technique, super promising in juniors... and with all of the striking qualities he has he is stagnating. Camden and Tomoki either have coaches who cannot figure them out, or they don't work/prepare properly, which again is probably a bad coaching... Hope they curb that curve and start progressing as they're expected to. For us it's exciting to see the success of Muramoto/Takahashi because of him, but I'd hate to be in the pairs that missed the podium. His skating is rough for ice dancing, there is no ease or smoothness in whatever he does. It's just no good, all fake... Props to Audrey and Misha, to Corey for moving in right direction and to Shaidorov for his fascinating jumps.

One year later (almost) watching this, Vanessa and Eric flopped at the Olympics and I firmly believe Skate Canada made the wrong choice in sending them still and now Evelyn disappeared from competitive figure skating for Skate Canada (suspicious, looking at you Skate Canada)...

I never get why Jun continues to wear those gloves. I get the reason for hand protection but they could at least match it with his costume. Oh wellz, we can never get it all. Jun with his gloves and his 3A. It's interesting that TCC didn't treat that 3A entrance properly. There was a blip of time in 2015 (or 2016) where he did a 3A with little to no prep. Or maybe it was a 2A. Anyway I don't know what happened to that progress but I guess TCC opted to just keep him healthy at that time.The 2-3 years leading up to Pyeongchang was rough health-wise to Jun as far as I can recall. I remember him almost not making the OG team due to injuries and the pointless competitions that KSU hosted. I am proud that Haein and Yelim got a redemption moment for their fall season. I feel sad for Young but I'm hoping that she's saving herself for Beijing instead. I still don't like their programs. LOL I'm apparently labelled a Korean skating hater for saying that. Whatevz, even I didn't like Eunsoo's programs either so they can't say that I'm biased to her. I wonder what will happen to Eunsoo though. Will next year be her swan song? Whatever her decision is, I hope she skates to a Blackpink program. I think she's truly the only one that could deliver the most kpop-adjacent program. The girl knows the choreo so it should be easy to inject the key dance moves to the program. I am so happy for Mai also getting that redemption moment from Nationals. I definitely agree that she's the definition of a Nice (tm) skater. I do think that JSF made the right decision of taking Mana to the Olympics but I can't help wonder if Mie Hamada made some deals in the background. Mana has the dynamo that Mai doesn't have BUT she's such a new (and inconsistent) skater to the scene. I'm hoping that Mana proves her place. I'm sure a lot of people will rally against her if she falters as Mai has that sentimental love from the public. Pairs is nice(tm). Ice dance is lovely. Green/Parson is truly the future of US Ice Dance. Hubbell/Donohue wishes they have their programs. I hope KanaDai stays for like a few more years to satiate my need for variety in Ice Dance. Even with some mistakes, their PB overshadows KoKo's.

I’m afraid ice dance in the US is going to have its Morgan Hurd moment in 2023-26 quad.

Dave, you rightly love to criticise Benoit's choreo. Scott Moir took 2 promising couples, Carr/Pon and Sales/Wamsteeker of Canada, and gave them both terrible Emo dreary dour music and boring choreo and inspite of Ponomarenko's injury, both couples were overtaken this season by better choreo'd programs.

I think I heard Lee Haein scream three times during her FS performance, it really distracted me. As did whatever was going on with her costume underwear. Never seen anything like that and I kept wondering if it was on purpose. Young You didn't look happy here, which is sad because the last time I remember seeing her she skated her FS with such joy.

Yelim was so stone-faced, her FS was genuinely hard to get thru. By the end I was ready to kick her off the team. Young has clearly worked very hard on her expressions, idk if this is that training in America thing again, but the others NEED what she has.

I wouldn't be so harsh as to call her stone-faced, but yes, she was just skating from element to element. Correctly scored, she should have received maybe 6s in P/E and I. Haein Lee, on the other hand, actually performed. Yet she only received 2 more PCS points than Yelim.

I think truly think Turandot is not the right vehicle for her. It's not like with her Black Swan SP where she is able to hide her lack of expressions through the drama of the music.
