So much has changed in the world of figure skating, yet the Kamila Valieva situation remains unresolved. Journalist Maya Bagriantseva joins us to break down the latest news in Russian figure skating and preview this week's 2023 ISU Grand Prix Final of Figure Skating. There is much to discuss - is it Ilia Malinin's time to shine? Should the quad axel be worth more? Is anyone challenging Kaori Sakamoto? Will the Kamila Valieva situation ever be resolved? Where is Daniel Grassl and why isn't anyone talking about it? Why must every skater touch the boards? Will Chock and Bates or Gilles and Poirier be victorious? Is there any Russian figure skating drama anymore? We debate it all on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

Roca and Sur vs. Punsalan and Swallow:
• Piece on the Relations...
"In January 1990, Sur was taking part in a month-long Russian All-Stars skating tour in the U.S., headlined by Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, when he defected to the U.S., on January 24, 1990. He was joined by Elena Krikanova, Igor Shpilband, Veronica Pershina and a tour official. The group moved in with Russian immigrants in Brooklyn and eventually pooled their money to rent a one-bedroom apartment.
Roca/Sur worked together in Detroit and were soon invited to audition for tour organizers and to compete at professional competitions. A year later, the ISU changed its eligibility rules, allowing professional skaters to reinstate as amateurs to compete at the World Championships and Olympics; Sur convinced Roca to return to eligible competition.
The duo choreographed the free dance that Punsalan and Swallow used to win the 1991 U.S. Nationals.
Roca/Sur began competing in the 1992-93 season. They were coached by Sandy Hess in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Roca and Sur won the 1993 U.S. national title. Roca and Sur hoped to win the United States' single berth to the ice dancing event at the 1994 Winter Olympics. To do so, the couple had to not only win the 1994 U.S. national title but also receive accelerated citizenship for Sur due to the Olympics' citizenship requirements.
A Republican Representative and Democratic Senator, both from Colorado, lent their support to speed up Sur's naturalization in Congress. It was argued that his case differed from other athletes because not speeding up the process would hurt an American citizen, Renee Roca. However, their efforts were stymied in late Dec. 1993 when the USOC denied a request for a waiver to the requirement that athletes be citizens by the national championships. Their main rivals for the Olympic spot, Punsalan and Swallow, were involved in a letter-writing campaign to Congress to attempt to prevent Sur from receiving expedited citizenship.

It would be really great to hear Jonathan get a word in. The interest in this channel is in hearing both hosts opinion. It is uncomfortable to watch J trying to say something and always being interrupted or not even allowed to speak

Honestly Jonathan’s input on their regular episodes are just him not giving any opinions and bending over backwards to agree with Dave… I’ve even FF’d a few times because he has nothing new to say. Last season they had a different opinion on JWCha’s programs (relative to Shoma Uno’s) and Dave had to literally clarify to Jonathan that it was ok that they disagreed, kind of the whole point of them discussing skating in the first place.

Jonathan sometimes has interesting input and queries. He's okay, in general, but not as knowledgeable. In regard to J not being able to get a word in, this is a three-way conversation via Zoom, so they all may interrupt or step on each other's words. It is not intentional on anyone's part. J seems patient about it, and he eventually gets his words in. Not as big a deal, as some viewers apparently perceive it to be.

I think Jonathan has a lot of great input and perspectives that are different from Dave's. Yeah, Dave talks over him sometimes, I get that. Could be the internet lag. Could just be Dave 😅

My favourite combination -- Maya, Dave and Jonathan! Thank you! And yes, deductions for overused music -- Rain in your Black Eyes, Exogenesis, Fix You are a few that should incur penalties. And, in a nod to Jackie Wong, Feelin' Good! And I would also add any emo ballad that simply serves as background music and has no relationship to the choreography.

I'm not a Morozov apologist, but he truly DOES have a promising Daniel Martynov who is going to the JGPF this week after a huge victory in Yerevan. Really, really impressed with him, Dave. He is a gorgeous skater, a perfectionist, rarely ever lets himself fall on his jumps, and all of this while being 17-years-old. He's beyond his years, truly, but is not a heavy-hitter when it comes to quads. His 3A is, however, a thing of beauty and very reliable.

I don't think Kaori's programs last season and this season are THAT different (in terms of big picture). When you impose a personality on someone and they feel it doesn't fit them, it isn't going to last anyway and the fake persona only gets you so far. I also do see personalities in the upcoming skaters too - they inevitably show it in their body through their skating. Perhaps they are just not the kinds of personalities you're drawn to, Dave. I do also think over-emphasis on personality/drama over actual skating is something that isn't good for the quality of the sport in the long term.

Interesting discussion, guys. I like the strong, animated opinions and good humor. Regarding Conti/ Macii, in what way were they ever 'favorites' this season? They were gifted third place in the sp at Worlds 2023, when Stellato/ DesChamps deserved third in the sp. While C/M competed well last season, it was a mistake for them to bring back the same old fp this season. Plus, C/M lack speed, range, and transitions. Sure, as an Italian team, politics are in C/M's favor, but I personally prefer Guarise & his new young partner, Beccari, over both of the top two Italian teams. I'm sure C/M are feeling more pressure this season. However, it's Deanna/ Max (& Miura/ Kihara prior to Kihara's injury troubles) who were my favorites this season in pairs. Also, Chan/ Howe were expected to do well, but Spencer had to have shoulder surgery and this year was the best time for him to get it done. Of course, C/M as reigning World bronze medalists came into this season with higher expectations and stature. But C/M tend to be overscored, when there are areas they need to improve on. What has helped them is their general consistency, especially on sbs jumps, coupled with Sara's charm and joy. But in most respects, they are average, and bringing back their old fp this season, was a mistake. For sure, C/M haven't performed as well competitively this season due to feeling more pressure. Like Maika, I enjoy Hase/Volodin. I think H/V have an excellent chance to take silver at GPF, and gold at Europeans.

Curious: do we think Ilia and Isabeau will podium at the GPF? What happens if Ilia is scored fairly in PCS in the free skate, or if Isabeau falls more than once? Wishing them both the best, but it seems to me like they'll have to really fight for a medal here.
@Moretowers
@Moretowers 8 ай бұрын
I think Isabeau is in a more precarious position, as the technique on the jumps seems to be holding out by a thread; i.e. falls on combinations or no more 3L3Lo in her programs, for example. She is still getting reputation judging but if, say, Hana Yoshida is able to land her 3As, the top 3 placement may be a stretch for Isabeau. Ilia seems to be well poised for a podium finish.

I think the difference is that the team event allows skaters who are not the very best in their discipline to win medals. So it’s harder to take it seriously.
@Melissa-yr7fm
@Melissa-yr7fm 8 ай бұрын
True but it puts pressure on countries to have enough strength in each discipline to even qualify for the team event. It helps skating overall for more countries to be concerned with all disciplines. Unfortunately, it took a team medal event to develop this.
@anusharasalingam7712
@anusharasalingam7712 8 ай бұрын
@@Melissa-yr7fm I definitely agree -as a spectator, I think the team event is actually a lot of fun and the skaters who end up getting medals should be treated like the Olympic medalists they are. I think over time countries will have more balanced skating programs and will be able to field teams that have strengths across-the-board. But, for the first few team events, there have been a few skaters, who were nowhere close to medaling in the individual event who benefited from being on a team with skaters, who were the top in their discipline and helped pull up the team score.

I just can’t get into Wuthering Heights, like I got sick of Evita pretty quickly (mainly their after skate theatrics). There is an artifice to their emotional presentation lately that is very offputting. I’ve felt that way ever since the Olympic season. They need an acting coach to work on complete facial expression. Their eyes betray the rest of their face, Piper always look 2 seconds from crying, even when she’s supposed to be happy, and it translates to their body movement. Stiff eyes equals stiff backs. I also feel like Wuthering Heights is trying to combine the acting skills of Evita with the quirkiness and drama of Hitchcock, and it doesn’t quite meet either standard.

LOL! Regarding the young Russian ice dance team who recently broke up, Maika says if not for the Russian ban, they probably would have stayed together. Hmm, we've previously seen young ice dance teams who have been romantically involved suddenly break up, regardless of their huge talent and grand opportunities. Nguyen/ Kolesnik and Elena/ Nikita come immediately to mind (albeit that Morosov was egregiously involved in Elena & Nikita sadly coming undone). Elena/ Nikita had the world at their fingertips and no one was able to convince Nikita not to split with Elena.

@allesy Ah, sorry to upset you. But referencing this well-known triangular situation from the past is hardly intended to 'spread lies.' During this episode, @TSLDave mentioned it too. In any case, it has long since become 'water under the bridge.' Anyway, there's no reason for young skaters to admit to having been more than friends, or to having dated and been close companions, especially not when they have bitterly split as athletic partners, and as friends!

No discussion of how Russia’s Supreme Court banned the LGBT movement as extremist this week, including prison time for public displays of support, and the police have already started raiding gay bars in Moscow? If the ISU allows Russia to return, there should be no international competitions in Russia because there are many LGBT members of the figure skating community and this endangers them.

Dave, you're too far gone being biased against Piper and Charlene... and you're too much in love with Madison's charm and rizz - yes, she is gorgeous in the air, she does the lifts fair due, she is a beautiful and charismatic skater ... but she does not have better skating skills than Piper or Charlene, just point blank. She's slower on the ice and her and Evan's twizzles are not so impressive at all compared to Lila and Lewis even. This reminds me of the time when Johnatan was hell bent on Papadakis/Cizeron being better at the 2018 Olympics than Virtue/Moir and he's still not over that either :) but I'm with him on Wuthering Heights, the music and choreo are fire. Also, how come you don't resonate with that musical choice? I've known it and remember it ever since the movie came out in the 90s ;) the Italians have a problem with packaginng, I agree, their programs, costumes and hieight difference or lack of there of, it creates issues for them. But she is great. Fast, skilled and really technically proficient. Other than that - love this episode with the Russian journalist lady, not shying away from the juicy stuff :D well done! xoxo

Surprisingly, this season ice dance is the most interesting as compared to other disciplines. Absolutely love Turkkila's free and Piper& Paul's free. Short dances are mostly disappointing. Very much agree about lack of personalities with magnetic charisma. As to Ilia, he does not have "his" program that could show him as an individual personality on the ice.

I disagree comparing gymnastics vs figure skating. Gymnastics is centered around the team. You select all gymnastics in America with team gold being the main criteria. Figure skating team event an afterthought, created very recently as opposed to gymnastics where its been a central part of gymnastics, as opposed to team event where USA wants athletes to prioritized their individual medal chances and not overdo it in a team event (like nathan not doing both). When created, there were only 3-4 feds that really could compete. Also, USA primarily cares about women skating and womens gymnastics. A team event in skating has 4 disciplines, only 1 of which usa really cares about.

This is received wisdom bc the Atlanta 96 women’s team was the first real Olympic gold medal for the US, so it had a massive media propaganda in an era of monoculture and it has just stuck that way. Had the big win been on the AA or a men’s event, that would be the event with the most prominence. A similar thing happened to the Russian men’s AG team 🥇 in Tokyo.
