This week, we dive into new exhibitions from Mikahil Kolyada and Shoma Uno that may or may not be turned into competitive programs. Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva gave performances that lead us to debate the future of pro skating in Russia. Meanwhile in China, the national team performed and Peng and Jin and Boyang Jin gave us much to talk about. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

Russian honey cake is an incredible cake with tons of extremely thin layers of cake that is flavored with caramelized honey, a whipped cream or sweetened condensed milk based icing/filling that holds the layers together and crumb coating on the outside. It is incredibly labor intensive to make and it is a phenomenal desert. So basically: When Galina says she makes a mean honey cake, she's saying that she is an incredibly skilled baker.

I think Hanyu felt he could speak up about COVID because of a sense of responsibility he has of his influence - different case when you alone make the decision to skate through a concussion and another to attend a skating competition knowing that you are essentially a super spreader event for others. I always super appreciate TSL videos esp when I can't keep up with fs socials - off to go check out various programs and clips!

49:45 Nathan has had a couple of standout programmes in recent years. His "Caravan" SP from 2018-19 was outstanding. And his Rocketman 2019-20 was just sublime. I'd still love to see Nathan take on "Fiddler on the Roof", I think with the right choreography (and acting - maybe he could have a chat with Ashley), it could be amazing.

I'd like to see him skate to The Mandalorian! That way he can be "cool", play a jedi & skate to music the audience will like! I worry he's been giving the air of not caring - with his sloppy costumes - that will have turned off a lot of judges. Like he didn't think he had to put in the effort others do, because he could score so high? That's the air he gave off. His costumes are better this year, thankfully. But honestly, if your a judge, on the fence between Nathan & Hanyu, won't you give the edge to the one who seems to be making more of an effort?

I was very angry when they tried to say that nobody was there for Oksana. Galina tried. Oksana was a rebellious teen & put in a very difficult position for even the most stable and mature adult to be in. It was a perfect storm. Many people tried to help her without expecting anything in return. (like my mom/family). Sometimes, people need to go through certain experiences to learn or grow and I think she is one of those people. I love Galina and I love Oksana.

Jonathan, I think that Hanyu skating after the collision (BTW he had no concussion) at the Cup of China and Shcherbakova skating with fever in this pandemic situation at the Russian Nationals are two totally different cases. There was a risk of spreading covid-19 in Shcherbakova's case. I believe that anybody with fever should not have been allowed to enter the venue in the first place.
@tsmith908
@tsmith908 3 жыл бұрын
They were different situations yes. Also Shcherbakova went to Nationals that she could have skipped without any problem while it was the season debut for Hanyu after the Olympic season, he was the reigning GPF winner. Had he WD he wouldn't have qualified to GPF. He is still the only skater who won GPF 4 times in a row.

I might be wrong but I think it was Eteri’s tale, this thing about pneumonia (read Covid 19, it’s Russia 😉) However I’m heaving extremely hard time believing it. First - it would probably be totally impossible to execute the skate like this, second - Anna performed during exhibition the day after. If she really had been sick, they would most certainly allow her to withdraw from gala skate. I think it was something Eteri and Daniel produced to boost the drama and to partly explain Anna’s withdrawal from Grand Prix Rostelecom earlier

Chen will have a big advantage in base value if he plans to do a 6 quad layout next season. If he lands his jumps in the SP and FS he will be safe simply because of his BV (but he will get good GOEs and PCS). I don't see Kolyada having a 3 or 4 quad program within a year. He has improved a lot under Mishin but he was still making mistakes at Nationals with a 2-quad program (doubling a Salchow and stepping out of a 3A). Even if he had a 2-quad SP and 3/4-quad FS he would need to skate to them consistently.

Yes & I think that arrogance has come through in the last two years in, "I don't need to care about costumes because my scores are so high". If the scores are close between him, Hanyu & Kolyada, don't you think politics will go for the person they think has tried the hardest in EVERY way?

@@etherealtb6021 Kolyada, Hanyu, and Shoma all have a different flavor of underdog right now, which - who doesn't love a comeback? Chen's position politically is dicier than his BV suggests. Regarding the dance segment of the team event, with Cipres self-destructing, it's unclear to me whether Papadakis/Cizeron would actually compete in the RD when France has no realistic prospect of a medal. They didn't do the team event in Pyeongchang. In which case, the team event RD would be the US and Russia competing for 1-2 and then Gilles/Poirier and Guignard/Fabbri dueling for third and fourth.

He still shouldn't have been allowed to skate, judging by the terrifying falls in his free skate. He was still not okay by the time NHK came around. Like, maybe it was the leg and ankle injury but maybe it was also a concussion. I think Jason Brown's rocky start to last season was lingering effects of his concussion. I'm sure he'd been given clearance and all but then a long flight to Japan (and all the noise and sensory overload) would have knocked him around.

@@akblades6338 I stand by what I said, even if we could have only known in retrospect. There are big personalities and lots of pressure to deal with. I don't think it's as simple as a paramedic simply saying no or yes when they have a determined patient and their coach/other entourage insisting they compete as well as event organisers, etc. Brain injuries are also a lot more difficult to recover from than a lot of people realise. I don't believe Yuzu's performance at NHK that year was just because of lack of training or a sore ankle. He might have been cleared but how many studies have been done on the effects of knocked heads on performance of figure skaters who are spinning and jumping and competing with huge sensory input from crowds and lights, etc, to inform medics of impacts specific to such patients?

I do feel annoyed when someone is in the way because they aren't following the rules or paying attention (especially if they do it chronically). I feel guilty when occasionally I get in the way because I wasn't paying close enough attention, but we can't be perfectly paying attention 100% of the time, so you just do your best. I kinda agree with Gallina and that if they get hit enough, they might learn. But if that girl only moved 2 feet and is with a coach, it sounds like neither she nor her coach care about rules or courtesy to other skaters. We have ONE coach like that and she trains all of her students to be like that. They don't give way to anyone and act like it's always the other person's fault if someone gets in the way of any element they do. I started running over them in "retaliation" and some of those students did improve when they got a taste of their own medicine. But a couple did not. There's no intimidating them into being more considerate. They'll act like a diva that owns the ice no matter what. But I 100% blame the coach for creating the situation.

WHAT!?? Who tell you that? Of cource Alina more popular at show more that Medvedeva and get more money for that. What kind of Medvedeva charisma you are talking about? Why no sponsors for Medvedeva charisma? You can tell that story about charisma for People from Shiseido and Puma. This is Will be very fan for them.

They're quite different. Alina is kinda awkward, keeps more to herself and introverted, or at least that's how we see her, who knows maybe in her circle of ppl she's more comfortable and "interesting"? while zhenya is more relaxed, outgoing and pretty much always speaks her mind. I remember how fast she gained popularity and was loved by russia in a short period of time when her career kicked off

@@chocolateperfume752 Yes, they're different, Alina is definitely more introverted that also shows on the ice. When I watch their skating Medvedeva always looks more interesting to me. Even when I saw them in person I liked Medvedeva better than Zagitova. But I can see why many say Zagitova is nicer. She is also perfect for big sponsorships like Shiseido because she has the classical beauty and she is reserved which is a plus for a Japanese company.

It’s pretty weird if Alina doesn’t have the charisma and interest, then why was she chosen presenter of the year and female athlete of the year in Russia.

Agree with the Nancy comments. That was a brutal attack, I don’t care if the perpetrators got like 5 minutes in prison that was a very serious violation that she suffered and it’s available to watch so inevitably people will make it a meme. But yes thankfully she recovered and is ok and it can be funny. I don’t think she was being dramatic I think she was assaulted in a way that was designed to take away her talent, which makes it so much more heinous and is obviously something the judges that sentenced those thugs didn’t consider. Everyone involved in that crime is apparently doing just great now. 🤷🏻‍♂️Not ok with me though.

Lol, why should Misha replace his SP with his Ex, when his Ex is basically a shorter version of his long program, only with different music playing.

@@TheSkatingLesson Oh don't get me wrong, I hate the style of his SP with a passion, but it wouldn't give off the 'vibe of a champion' if he recycled his LP in his SP (when he's already recycling his step sequence) and skated two such similar programs in one competition.

So Tarasova pushed Medvedeva to anorexia.. much better than sending someone have babies. She was also mocking Konstantinova on TV for being too heavy this year. Every time she loves someone it ends like that.
