This week, an event happened that brought together two of Dave Lease's favorite things: Sectionals/National Qualifying Events and politically correct Canadian figure skaters. We break down Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro and Deanna Stellato, her ponytail and that partner of hers who isn't Nate. And then we dive into the moment you've all been waiting for, our honest predictions, hopes and brutally honest thoughts about the 2021 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and why having a bunch of coaches relieving stress in 'Sin City' may not be such a brilliant idea. It's another edition of 'This and That' that you won't want to miss!
Skates featured: Nathan Chen, Jason Brown, Vincent Zhou, Andrew Torgashev, Alysa Liu, Mariah Bell, Bradie Tennell, Amber Glenn, Karen Chen, Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier, Ashley Cain and Tim LeDuc, Madison Hubbell and Zach Donohue, and Madison Chock and Evan Bates.

She has so much potential, both technically and artistically, but it just isn’t working for me right now... she could become the next US Feds much needed star, she’s already Tiktok famous, but she always lets us down in competition when it counts :/// and she NEEDS better music and programs next year, jazz for the short and something classical for the free, NO MORE BALLADS! I hope I’m wrong and she gets it together at Nationals, I hate to see wasted potential

@@user-gg9uu9kx9w oh god, the ballads. ENOUGH already. I can only feel for one lady with the constipated forlorn love and/or loss song face on. Once she's skated, I just feel like everyone else is just pained waiting to go to the toilet. If she's in doubt about killer music choices, she doesn't necessarily need to emote a character (young woman on the cusp of adulthood, coming of age and being lovelorn - NO). Maybe she could take inspiration from Katelyn Hawayek and Jean Luc Baker, picking a theme and owning it, or even Fear and Gibson, making a killer music choice and owning it. Sometimes it's good for singles skaters to look at dance for inspiration to bring their ice presence to life. Curve ball would be doing something like they did in Bridgerton, taking modern pieces, and putting them onto string quartets to work with a period drama. Although, every junior and novice on the planet will be doing that next season. I think she would do well with some Pulp Fiction, finding her inner Mia Wallace at Jack Rabbit Slims.

Dave - I think you need to instigate a campaign to convince Bruno he has to compete again with Aljona. The door is so wide open for them to waltz straight back in, and win. Aljona is an absolute skating treasure (and my girl crush if I'm allowed one of those), and Bruno is the only man capable of matching her. 9:00 Jonathan, no-one works harder than Zoe Jones. I've watched her train more times than I dare count (same rink, kids same age etc) and you have never seen anyone warm up like she does. It's like watching a ballerina. I have no words for what she puts her body through before she even puts on her boots. My favourite programme of Zoe's was her Free programme (ladies singles) at the British Nationals (I think 2015). She was initially declared the winner, but an hour or so later, NISA (now BIS) changed the points and result, leaving Zoe in second by 0.07 points.

I really like Tessa. My impression comes from someone who has interviewed them. It is really easy to have a great conversation with Scott. Because Tessa is so savvy, intelligent and slightly guarded, it is more challenging to break through that shield during an interview. It is why when I interviewed them, I made jokes about the trilogy, etc. It is very challenging for an interview to get those authentic moments. This is also a result of ice dance being so subjective and political. Meryl Davis and Tanith Belbin are very similar in this regard, though they are different than Tessa. I once did a blog/article reviewing the first episode of Tessa and Scott where I did a spoof interview reply by Meryl Davis. I will certainly used "Blessed" from now on!

Let's face it. As much as the USFS loves Mariah Bell and Alysia Liu, they're not making it out internationally. Period. I predict they would be 6-8 at the Olympics next year, if it even happens. The best thing to do is give a chance to the other ladies who are being consistent. Mariah Bell does not have that Trusova fighting spirit/grit to get on the Olympic team. Tennell is the most consistent , but she can't really threaten the Russian or Japanese ladies. Karen Chen is looking like she could be on the Olympic/Worlds team. Add in the factor of her ethnicity, and she'd be a better model than Liu. Audrey Shin is still in the process of getting more experience, but so far, she's looking better than Bell, Liu and everyone else. Her talent must be fostered, and if USFS plays their cards right with this one, she could make it to Milan-Cortina 2026. Gracie Gold is not going to be on the Worlds/Olympic team, obviously, and Amber Glenn? Haven't seen that 3A just yet. The other ladies are not in the conversation at all at this point. Just being realistic. Not really worried about the US men - I peg Nathan, Jason (the USFS can get him a bye), and maaaybe Vincent for the quads. The pairs, as you mentioned, may be the most interesting event yet.

If I was choreographing for Kirsten and Michael, my first program for them would be the soundtrack to “When Harry Met Sally” with music from Harry Connick Jr. Kirsten’s on ice persona has this Meg Ryan-Nora Ephron movie quality. Costuming wise, she would have to skip the sequins, and use the autumn aesthetic from the movie. For Deanna and Maxime, I liked the dramatic LP theme, but their song was a little too movie trailer-esque. Their lifts are exquisite. I’m hope for future programs they try songs from musicals like “They Just Keeping Moving the Line” from Smash, “Move On” from Sunday in the Park with George, or “Always Better” from the Bridges of Madison County.

Totally cheering for Amber Glen! Also; despite Jonathan's dislike of teen angst, and lets face facts...all angst can't be Isolde Liebestod level, as much as we might prefer it, I really liked Roman's music and program. Regarding Brasseur/Daleman's technical content, they (successfully) did triple jumps and a triple throw at Sectionals earlier, so I wasn't sure why they were only doing doubles across the board here. Maybe they had some training setback (which seemed to be the case for a lot of the teams; KMT had multiple injuries that cost them stretches of training time).

When Hanyu talks about something he wants to achieve then he means it seriously and he has always proven he's achieved what he wanted. His childhood dream was to land the 4A, not because of how many points it worths. Gosh he's been talking about it in so many interviews and you guys still don't understand WHY he wants to do it. Who cares if Chen doesn't go for it because for him it doesn't worth doing it? Hanyu is in a completely different stage of his career, he is a two-time Olympic champion and he said many times his only dream that remained was the 4A. Chen on the contrary hasn't even won an individual Olympic medal yet. Everyone knows landing a 4A would be an incredible milestone in the sport, a historic moment, for Hanyu it is not about how many points he would get for it.

I feel like they say a lot more insightful stuff during non-Russian videos instead of lapsing into 20 minute long monologues about galina and adult skating, and refusing to give their real opinion on skaters beyond shady side eyes.... their Japanese and American etc videos are generally more structured and they have a lot more to say (due to less scrutiny perhaps). I find it disappointing that Russia has given us the MOST to dissect and talk about yet somehow their videos felt a bit hollow or something?

MTM were skating at the Scarborough Ice Galaxy, which is indeed the home of Carol Lane. I thought it was a very strange choice for a challenge hub given that most of those skaters train out of much newer and nicer facilities in the greater Toronto area. Scarborough was under additional pandemic capacity restrictions at the time, while other clubs located in Oakville, Thornhill, etc were not. The rink is also very much not a standard size (extra wide), so strange choices all around. Anyway, believe it or not, that facility just underwent a reno during which they painted over a hideous orange stripe pattern that ran around all of the walls, but opted to leave the 1970s-era murals untouched 🤣

I have been wondering if Alyssa will withdraw since your recap of the Vegas invitational. I was also curious on what you think of the article by Philip Hersch about her lower expectations. Would she be better if she stayed with her previous coach?;Also, IF Alyssa had the skating skills to begin with do you think she would have adjusted better to her changing body?

I am totally with Jonathan regarding KMT. Also she and Michael are an odd couple, they just don’t seem like they’re from the same planet. She is very sporty and looks like she never has a bad day and he’s kind of Emo. They just don’t have chemistry and you can’t change that. I do think if they did a more energetic piece like “I got no Roots” , that is energetic and more modern, they could do really well with that. As Jonathan said, it should not be a romantic relationship but more of a partnership a “Matrix” type relationship, fighting for good against evil or something.

I'm glad another person thinks this too. KMT first caught my attention in Sochi 2014. How could you not notice her? Then for whatever her reasons she switches partners and I've never seen quite the same KMT since. I don't doubt Michael is a great guy but for whatever reason this pair has never worked for me. Even when they skate well there is always something just missing. Its late in the game to do much about it now but given that there is no believable romantic chemistry between these two they need to come up with a different type of program. Make it lighthearted and fun and stop trying to force something that just doesn't work.

no, she is not where we want her to be, but like it or not, alysa has improved so much though, on the basics and other side of skating since last season, plus, we haven’t seen her on the ice in over a month, so we can’t just assume we know what she’s going to come out with at the champs. we should just be wishing her well & for her to perform great, even if she doesn’t place (which she said wasn’t her goal or care anyways), we should be patient before we claim she is unfixable or over, etc., but then again, i understand that tsl can sometimes come off like this with all the youngsters, not just alysa, even if not their intent, and honestly, alysa, the 3a’s, stephen and etc. deserve way better than what they get, but i know that usually, dave & jonathan mean well. good luck to everyone at the champs., and i hope that you all perform well, and do your best. ps, i kindly admit that kamila’s russian national/russian cup inflation (she did perform amazing though in the rusnats & russian stage 5 fs, and the usfsa didn’t do that with alysa at the isp or las vagas int, and i’m not hating on valieva or her performances btw) is just as bad, if not even worse as/than alysa’s national inflation, but to each their own ig, haha, and i would never judge or attack anyone, so please, refrain from doing so to me! have a good day. ig i will be one of the only ones who believes in alysa wholeheartedly, sees something special in her & knows what potential she is capable of in the future, while still loving the others, yet admitting none of them are perfect, and got a lot of work to do, in different areas, and i will patiently wait for them, for when they are ready. i will enjoy this side alone, but it is a side i am proud to be apart of. ps, i am not saying that i am better than anyone or that all of you are hating because like me, some of you were admittedly being constructive, and i usually am neutral or like (with) tsl’s commentary, this is just the one thing that they do or that some of you do, act & say that i don’t always agree with or doesn’t sit right with me, personally, but i would never judge any of you, again, and i respect & understand their (tsl’s) hard work & grit for all they do, and to just be able to keep us all entertained and covered with the news, even during the pandemic, so i do wish them the best, and hopefully they can share videos of their skating one day, i bet their progress has gotten a lot better since when they started, and i would never put them down, like some have because i want them to do well too, even if they’re not at an olympic level, and i’ve seen people belittle, put down or hate on them and claim that the two of them know nothing because they don’t skate as a good as someone like nathan or yuzuru, lmao, those people need to chill.

I'm really rooting for Alexa and Brandon. With their quality and experience, they could be a steady and strong force on a world level right away. A World team of Knierim and Frazier and Calalang and Johnson would have a real chance at 3 pairs spots for the Olympics. They would probably have to place ahead of Kirsten and Michael, which isn't impossible. They'd have a chance for sure. Cain and LeDuc have weaker pair elements and have had frequent jump rotation issues especially under pressure and no longer do the triple loops in their short. There's less scoring potential there.

The Canadian Nationals have just been cancelled. The pandemic is rapidly getting much worse in Canada. Whether Canada sends a team to the Worlds is not yet clear, but given very strong public opinion against travel outside Canada, I doubt that will happen. Numerous public officials in Canada have lost their jobs in the past few days after their private foreign travels were disclosed. As in other countries, there is also very strong disapproval of people getting vaccinated out of turn. My guess is that Canada will not compete in either the Summer or Olympics or 2022 Winter Olympics.
