ADDITIONAL NOTES: “But it hits the biceps from a different angle!” No it doesn’t. “But it works great as a finisher!” There’s no need for “finishers”, and even if there was, why not just finish using a better exercise? “But it’s better for building grip strength compared to a normal curl!” The purpose of a biceps focused exercise is to maximize biceps stimulation - not to build grip strength. If you want to build grip strength, do grip focused exercises. “But so and so does these and his biceps are hyooge!” Lots of people do lots of different things for any number of reasons. That doesn’t mean every single thing they do is a direct cause for their results or that you should copy it. To be clear, I’m not saying plate curls “don’t work” or that you can’t do them. You’re performing a basic loaded elbow flexion movement, so as long as you can get close to failure without your grip being the limiting factor then it will of course stimulate growth. But it’s just one of those “what’s the point?” exercises. There’s no upside compared to a regular curl using bars/dumbbells/cables/machines, but there is potential downside in that it’s more awkward to grip (which takes focus away from simply hammering the biceps as hard as possible) and the progression window is very limited since you can only curl a maximum of 45 pounds which will quickly become too light for most people unless they’re performing very high reps.

I see another benefit of doing "plate curls" that you haven't touched. It's seriously minor, but a consideration for me -- probably others. For those people that do not have access to a full gym (or just equipment is being used), but still want to do drop sets with progressively less weight (a pyramid), using plates is quicker than changing the weight on the bar/dumbbell. That's it. It's just accessibility, not performance.

Only reason I would use plates instead of dumbells, is hammer curls. Hear me out. I can manage the weight, but it always feels like the dumbell is slipping, and thus I fear that I might drop it on my toes. But, with a plate, not like the one you showed here, but the ones that have the holes around the center hole, grab it from there, and thus, no slipping.
