Does anyone know if that rumor is true? I added a source I referenced in the description, but I couldn't find any definitive answer about the movie theatre thing!
@rpace
@rpace Жыл бұрын
I had not heard that but it makes sense. I have also read that the wider image became popular because of TV. Production companies were trying to differentiate from television in any way they could to keep people coming to theaters.
@rostislav.svoboda

These lenses was actualy made just to excite more people. Cause cinemas were becoming less popular and people didnt enjoy it so much. Cinemas and productions needed to come with something new that is in cinema only because standard TVs were more affordable. So they came out with 21:9 aspect ratio that couldnt be played on normal 4:3 TVs and people still love it!

Anamorphic optics were actually developed during WWI for tanks so they could have a wider field of view through their periscopes. And then wasn't used in main stream big films until the 50s. Fox made a version of the anamorphic format and called it Cinemascope!

Diopters will help you with minimum focus distance so you can get blurry backgrounds. Pick up a cheap set, but also get an achromatic .3 one as well. I just got the 35mm sirui Saturn and it helps when you wanna get close.

Pincushion distortion (or inward bowing as you call it here) is a trait of the sirui lens (and most chinese made scopes) and NOT specific to any anamorphic as you incorrectly mention. Most anamorphic lenses have a distinct and wanted barrel distortion. The sirui optics do not have this classic anamorphic barrel distortion.

Anamorphic lens was called Hypergonar and was invented by Herni Chrétien after he saw the experiment by Abel Gance using 3 projectors. He wanted to do more or less the same thing but using only one projector. The original experiment was done for artistical reasons.

I shoot mostly photos with my Sirui Saturm 35mm (the small form factor one) and absolutely love it, sure you can only shoot in landscape and lightroom still doesn't have a desqueeze tool (which is absolutely insane when you think of it) but I don't feel like your other points are much of a hassle. When it comes to minimal focus distance the 58mm vivitar diopter set is under 35$ and does the job (you do lose infinite focus but if you're shooting close who really cares). Considering how sharp or "too sharp" the lens is, using losing some IQ using one doesn't bother me much. You'll in my experience get used to the squeeze in the viewfinder real fast (I do now use a phone as a monitor but that's mostly because I'm legally blind). I actually do like that the flares are subtile and more controllable. One thing I'll correct about your points is about IBIS, there is a camera system that does support anamorphic IBIS and it's panasonic.

Hi👋, new here, so I recently bought a Canon 75-300mm f/4 - 5.6 telephoto lens, is it great for landscape photography? Or, what can you recommend to shoot on that lens?🙂 Still waiting to arrive.

@noth606 8 ай бұрын
Late to the party but this makes me wonder, why a completely unrelated comment? I get that you're enthusiastic about your new glass, but it's got nothing to do with the video... But also, typically "landscape" is taken to be a kind of wide shot of a vista, like of a mountain range, flowing fields, dark forests, a river carving a path through a valley etc, not really telephoto territory IMO, but maybe that's just me. If I were you, I'd probably go for shooting animals, mostly birds zoomed in as that's what your lens is made for. You have 'reach' to take pics of things from quite a distance without disturbing them, which is a plus. Reading your comment gives me the impression that you bought the lens as a "cool thing" and not because you wanted to shoot something that you needed lens like that for, which I can understand but it is a bit of a strange order of things, I tend more to have an idea of what I want to do, and then pick something that works well for what I want to do.

I dont know if what you heard about anamorphic lens and wider screens itstrue and it was about fitting more people into the theater, as far as i know theater footage and screen had a 4x3 aspect ratio and when TV came out they had the exact same sspect rstio st home and cinema theaters were into a decline and then invented something new to atract people back into cinema so the anamorphic lenses were born.
