Note on Jason: Michael basically says that he has the mental equivalency of a 7-year-old. It's been a while (former school psych about 10 years ago), but at a guess his IQ is probably low 70s. Below 70 is considered cognitive deficiency (previously known as mental retardation), so this makes me wonder whether in court he could be tried as someone with a disability. Almost like a minor? Though, knowing our "justice" system, I doubt that would help. ☹️☹️☹️ Now I'm remembering statistics about how many people go to jail with cognitive disability (It's almost 25%) and it's making me sad again. 😔😔😔😔

In America, spouses can't be forced to testify against each other, as opposed to other people who can be subpoenaed and compelled to testify or be convicted of contempt of court. Still, that wouldn't stop... literally every other person seeing their crime from testifying.
@forkxin

There are limits to that IIRC. I believe it's not retroactive -- that is, you can be compelled to testify about something that happened prior to the marriage. Also anything said in the presence of a third party isn't covered either.

Great reaction! loved the commentary on Janet evolving and learning. I also really love this episode's commentary on motivation being a core component of what makes an action 'good' or 'bad'.

Always love your reactions, you always make connections that I never would (the comment Janet made about going against her programming and Eleanor not following what's normalized in society)

oof you had me worried when the next ep was gonna drop! Do yourself (and us) a favour and hammer out the next several eps.. you won't regret it! Having rewatched this a couple of times now... Jason and Janet are by far my favorite characters. Every time Jason is on screen it's... special. The great thing, and a testament to the actor, you are NEVER in question who Janet is playing. She's totally groovy, and does indeed make the bass drop (brilliant line)! Fyi Jason was sued after throwing a molotov cocktail at Acid Cat's speedboat. For most shows, I would say you are over-analyzing, but gotta say.. in this case you most certainly are not.. in fact it is going to make the payoff for us viewers that much better, so many of your questions get explored. The Medium place and learning more about the afterlife is such an interesting addition. hmm I want pancakes now.

While you make some good points about Jason and his naivety, I would argue one point in that some of his actions can be considered to be done out of malice. He blew up the speedboat *because* the person was suing him; it was revenge. Yet there is a strange sweetness about Jason that is often in juxtaposition with his criminal acts. It's like he doesn't have the part of our brain that is our moral compass, as well as the parts that holds our inhibitions and impulse control. Part of that can be attributed to his environment, but he also could have caused damage to his brain as well. Drug use, injury, born that way, who knows?

There's a fascinating line drawn here between Eleanor, Jason, and now Janet on one side, and Chidi, Tahani, and Michael on the other. The former are unpredictable 'errors' introduced to the Good Place (Janet, now, by virtue of the changes introduced by Jason's attention and the resetting), while Chidi and Tahani, who belong there, and Michael, its organizer, are predictable, neurotic, careful, and "Lawful"; they 'belong' there. Your discussion of programming feels relevant here- as far as we know, Michael wasn't programmed as Janet was, but was he socialized, like the humans were during life? And what does this say about Eleanor's bad advice to Chidi here, wherein we saw the dangers of his indecisiveness killing him but he's advised to turn his brain off in the episode where we see the consequences of that for Jason, in his life?
@Sinewmire

I think Chidi is making the right call, as much as a decision is important, here I think it's worth taking the time to make sure it's the right one. Check out Eleanor! She made a truly selfless decision here, even if she was presented with another option afterwards, thanks to Janet v.2

I think motivation's particularly important for Eleanor, since selfishness is the key to a lot of her problems. I interpret that high school scene a bit differently from you, I think; it always struck me not as a criticism of cliques and social categorization, but as a criticism of people like Earth-Eleanor who sever themselves from the whole world rather than risk the inconvenience of connection. My interpretation of that "say you love her" scene is this: Eleanor's score goes up not because of her words' utilitarian impact, per se, but because it's the rare occasion when Eleanor does something she believes to be good without any hope of practical benefit to herself. On Earth, she would never have done something like that, because her essential view of the world is that the point of life is to do right by oneself. Achieve personal happiness, and disregard everything and everyone who stands in the way of that happiness. Her score improves because her decision to give Chidi that advice reflects an improvement on her character, not because it's stellar advice.

Just stumbled on your channel and already a fan! On a side note, the art on the wall behind you is quite nice. Where is the picture of the gold church domes from? Is it related to the painting that's visible in some of your other videos - the one with what looks like a person in the foreground reaching or pointing towards the outline of some similar shaped towers in the distance?

There’s something that doesn’t make sense about that final moment of the episode, the conversation between just Michael, Shawn, and Real Eleanor. And I can’t say what it is. But those who know you probably know what I’m talking about.

Janet’s original primary function was to help the humans in the good place and make them happy. There is usually no bad people to take advantage of that system, and usually Janet’s don’t get rebooted and learn new emotions. So that’s sort of why we are seeing this advanced Janet not telling Michael personal info, as she feels compelled to help these humans and make them happy.
