Sailing away from Great Barrier & Some SERIOUSLY Sweet new tech. Get Motion Array bit.ly/motion-array-GWTW for the best templates in Premiere Pro, After Effects, FCPX & DaVinci Resolve.
We have talked with friends who have the Mastervolt and Balmar high-output alternators who are very happy with their set up too. There are lots of new options out there, so look them all up to see which is best for your application. No matter which brand, we're fans of the technology and think high-output alternators are a fantastic solution for boaters.
UPDATE**
We've been using this system since mid-December 2021 and it's now June 2022. So we're 6 months in and it's worked well. We haven't been able to get our tachometers working properly but other than that...the ability to pump in so much power to our battery bank while simply arriving at and leaving an anchorage is fantastic! We think high output alternators will be the norm vs a generator in the future. It's already becoming an option with some boat manufacturers.
FYI, we were warned by friends with high output alternators that we would notice a slight drop in our overall speed. That's because power is being diverted to the batteries. For our setup, it seems to be about half a knot or so. For instance, if we motored with one engine at 1800 RPMs before we would travel at about 5 knots, now it's 4.5 knots.
We've also worked out a couple of bugs that we talk about on our blog. So if you are considering purchasing high-output alternators, make sure to click over and read our latest update first.

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales.
We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. Self-reliance and living a sustainable lifestyle are a must. It's all about managing our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.
We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste.
Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

The ability to pump in so much power to our battery bank while simply arriving at and leaving an anchorage is fantastic! How is the speed affected after the batteries have been fully charged? Then the power output and, accordingly, the generator resistance should have decreased significantly.

6 months since you sailed into NZ. Wow. I know for you it probably seems not so long ago but for me, sitting here in Manhattan Beach, Ca, it seems like just a few minutes ago I was watching you sail from Tonga. Its been a crap couple of years for all of us but as others have told you, Sunday morning with the Wynn's has helped take our minds off of our struggles and helped the time go by in a classy, fun glimpse of your lives. Almost always positive, even during the most difficult of times, almost always a laugh about something, even chaotic uncertainty and always, such beautiful scenery. Please know that the few minutes we get to share with you each week has helped make all the tough stuff much easier to live with. Thanks, as always, for sharing your great adventure.

Those big alternators are a stroke of genious. Giving up the generator and gaining all that space is a very good solution for most boats, because of the huge loss of weight and the gain of storage. A set of bigger cables and some other mounting details is just peanuts compared to what you gain by changing the hardware. Although you take away a little of the power from the motors by mounting larger alternators, it is not really significant and you will rarely notice it.

Suggestion first hand experience ; bring in fresh cold air in front of alternator , have your exhaust hose behind alternator and cables . This will bring ambient air to the alternator to cool whenever motors are running. I can turn my exhaust fans on from the helm, have idiot lights to let me know when they are on. This way it exhaust the heat out when shout down and you can turn off when cooled. I also have digital thermostats in engine compartments to monitor the temp down there. Love your videos! Please excuse my spelling .

That's a lot of electrical components that should make your lives a whole lot better over time. I didn't realize how much difference an alternator could make until watching your videos on the topic. Jason I would mix the two mics together - you need the ambient noise for context, but the lapel will improve vocal clarity and cut through. That’s a pretty standard audio production technique, plus you have redundancy if one mic goes down. This assumes you have two audio channels on the camera of course.

Jason and Nikki, I have been in the electrical field all my life and I am 75 years old now. I highly recommend that you NOT remove that generator. It is not costing you anything to leave it sit right where it is. Plus you never know when you would have a failure and need it. At least run the new system for 6months to a year before you consider taking it out. I think you have a very sophisticated system that will provide you with a lot of power. But when you are out in the middle of nowhere with a failure you certainly will appreciate a backup. Good luck and have lots of fun.🤗

Hi, welcome to our harbour. We used to live 3 minutes from the boat ramp. Now we have shifted down to the Waikato. But we still regard Gulf Harbour as our home place. Not sure about you taking a dinghy to the Supermarket. Might need to attach some wheels to it. Welcome guys. If we still lived at Gulf Harbour we would have come down and met you up with you.

Maybe your second trip around you can pick and choose places and stay as long as you like! Would love to hear a composting toilet update! I hear so much work on conventional cruiser toilet systems. Seems composting would be the way to go on any mobile platform. This might be good fill in material on a rainy vlog week!

Aside from adding a few shims to the forward (if I recall correctly) head composting toilet to account for curvature of the wall, they have had zero issues with the Nature's Head composters and have had no trouble finding coconut coir for them. On the other hand, Jason hates working on the remaining marine toilet and has threatened to replace it too with a composting toilet. They had sound reasoning to keep one marine head, but I think Jason often regrets it! 😜 Curious Minion

Jason & Nikki, I love your enthusiasm, setting the spinnaker, installing the alternator especially when things either go wrong or there is an added level of complexity. You never flag rather you add a new and stronger level of determination. Your curiosity, shows in all areas of efficiency, electronics, video editing/effects and music. Next time, new solar panels, dropping the old generator overboard and lots of other fun stuff. Un abbraccio forte a due.

I look forward to seeing an update video on the performance of the alternators, and charging system in general, after about a year. I know that some manufacturers tend to embellish the actual charging rates while the practical usage is, in actuality, different and less than advertised. All this firsthand knowledge of catamaran systems and upgrades from full time cruisers is a tremendous help to folks like me who plan on retiring as a cruiser. It also lets me pre-plan what to change on my boat when I finally get one. You two are the best!

now that you are gonna have all that extra room...maybe consider stowing a replacement alternator or two..good ones though not the old ones. Or have the old ones rebuilt and put them someplace safe and dry for the day when you find you've lost an alternator. You cant do this with everything of course, but as you have engaged a higher level of reliance on those alternators it might be a good idea to carry spares. You guys are awesome!!

Nice job on the alternators! New solar panels next will definitely help however I would really rethink the generator removal which I am sure you have given it great thought. It is just another layer of electrical backup in the event things go bad. I always like backups to the backup especially when you operate in the extreme remote areas of the world which you guys do. Thanks for the videos and keep up the great work!

I think I would have to disagree. Three power sources should be enough, solar, port engine, and starboard engine. The generator is redundant. There can come a point where additional resources become a burden rather than an asset. If you used commuting as a comparison, riding a bike to work (compare with solar), driving your primary car to work (port engine), driving your other car to work (starboard engine), keeping a third car just in case (generator) become an unneeded headache.

Hi, from what I saw the generators were corroded and about pooched anyway.

I am a bit shocked that the purpose built generator has lower efficiency than the main engines with a BOLT-ON alternator. I can see the main engines providing more power - but I would think they would burn a lot more fuel/watt produced. With a large LI battery bank and solar I can see where the generator is not needed anymore for "low power" supply at anchor. (which is basically what the Generator was for in the original boat - it was needed to run the electrics when you were not on shore power) The original boat just had the small alternators, fewer less capable batteries, and no solar at all. You were pretty much required to run the generator daily to charge the batteries for the day.
@evtinker1814
@evtinker1814 2 жыл бұрын
@@redwolfexr Keep in mind the generator must charge the batteries through a battery charger where the alternators can do it directly. The charger is limited to 100 Amps, so only a small portion of the generator output is actually able to be used to charge the batteries.
@jansmit4628
@jansmit4628 2 жыл бұрын
Doubling the amps results in halved charge time only is true for the charging case from roughly 20% to 80%. Above about 80% charging current is lowered by the BMS to keep the temperature of the Lithium batteries in the save area.
