D Dude name one time Hollywood did this. Everyone is mad at Chinese governments and organizations for doing this, and we’ve literally only seen Chinese so blatantly do this because of looks. Not even the shitty violin movies go this low. They hire actors for their acting skills, even if they suck at violin. It’s like hiring a singer that can’t speak publicly well. The crappy organizations in China who do that shit are regarded as the lowest of the low in America.

I play the erhu. At 8:14 in the video you see two erhu players. I think the girl on the right is legit but the one on the left is fake. So here are some oopsies: #1) The key of the piece they're playing (Horse Racing) is meant to be F major. The girl on the right has her hand shifted down slightly from the position of that white strip (which is string used to tie the two strings together). That's the right positioning (in fact Brett and Eddy went to China and learnt this piece with a professional erhuist -- you can compare what was done in this performance with that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9ygh5mozLuzYpc.html). The girl on the left, however, has her hand near the white string and her fingers are more rigid and together (meaning she wouldn't be able to reach the right notes). #2) Not strictly an oopsie but when they do the horse neighing, the girl on the right actually shifts her left hand up to vary the notes. The girl on the left keeps her fingers pretty much completely still. You can still make a neighing sound but that is a signal of the broader problem of the left girl -- her fingering is a lot less fluid and natural-looking than the one of the right. Generally she's too tense. #3) *BIGGEST OOPSIE*: THE GIRL ON THE LEFT HAS HER BOW REVERSED. If you look closely, the wood of her bow is in between the strings whilst the horse hair is outside of them. Obviously, you cannot make a sound with that. That's how they faked it! You can compare it with the girl on the right who has her bow properly stationed in between the strings with the horse hair in the middle and the wood outside of the strings.
@hellbuck
@hellbuck 3 жыл бұрын
Holy shit that poor bow. That's instrument abuse, the stick can't even properly fit between the strings, the gap's too narrow. She's literally chafing the wood/bamboo with that aggressive bowing.

The context is basically where they had chinese celebrities on a variety show (快乐大本营 or Happy Camp in english).It's like a variety show where they do challenges and then stick in a few performances in between because they're all celebrities (it's entertainment and the fans like to see them do stuff, it's also kind of like an intermission? I guess). The first girl playing the violin is Ju Jingyi. She's a chinese actress and part of the chinese girl group SNH48 (so singing and dancing). I'm pretty sure the majority of these people in the video are not professionals and some of them might have just learnt the instrument for the purpose of the show. They might have also had them pretend to play and play a recording in the background. It's not a super serious show and most of the celebrities are just there to promote their newest work (songs, upcoming movies and tv shows, etc.) *Just added in some extra information and reworded some of it because I don't think my original comment was worded very well. **Editing again, I'm coming back with some more context now. Everyone playing is at least proficient in their instrument. Zhou Jieqiong does actually play the pipa, I'm pretty sure that Ju Jingyi played violin when she was younger, etc. This leads me to believe that they were probably performing this without much preparation, hence the fake playing. I'd just like to emphasize though, the purpose of this performance wasn't to actually show off their musical talents, but rather to have all the participants of that episode collaborate in a fun performance to entertain the fans while they promotw other projects of theirs.

Ah it sounds similar to popular music count down shows where they'll have an audince and little interviews and count down the charts and have a band in to play thier latest hit "live" but its mainly miming and sometimes you see bands do minor(or even occasionally) extreme mistakes so you can tell "ha we're just miming this having fun on tv"
@kimjunhee4011
@kimjunhee4011 3 жыл бұрын
It was just a pre-recorded performance. The live audience there get to hear music live for like 3 or 4 times and the broadcast people take the best sound and edit it that way so there are no mistakes during broadcast in television. It's just a common practice in mainstream television and it is a public secret. Almost everyone knows (especially in Asia) that most of the time what you hear live is just a pre-recorded one.

@dreamingsophie5792
@dreamingsophie5792 2 жыл бұрын
@@kimjunhee4011 then I'm confused as to why there are so many obvious mistakes and differences between visual and audio recording. Like obviously, small mistakes happen, but, as someone in the comments pointed out, one of the erhu players had her bow reversed, meaning she couldn't even make a sound like that. Why put someone in front of an audience to play when they are just sitting on a chair, miming? Like, I genuinely want to know. Edit: after further deep-diving into the comments, apparently this is from a variety show where celebrities do challenges and stuff, so it's not meant to be serious and more or less obvious that it's a recording. I'm guessing in the end it seems like some of the performers can actually play their instrument while others maybe just learned it for that part of the show.

I dunno a lot about the pipa, but it looked like she messed up at 7:26 - 7:30. You can see her index finger slide a fret down but the pitch stayed the same during the tremolo. And then she slides it back up and the pitch is still the same. And then she adds a vibrato at the end which it doesn't sound like a vibrato.

@@Hannah-dw8nz Not with this kind of sound quality. It's dubbed and flubbed. Instruments (esp. violins) are mostly equal loudness and monophonic, so whoever made the mix failed his acoustics. It also sounds like close miking. (Even off LingLing mono microphone you can hear so-called intensity stereo.) Wide area microphones would pick up the movement of the artists a lot (you'd get fabric swish) and generally do not have the sensitivity and noise floor (which is why they're only used for support in choirs and not main, and taking venue ambiance), and boom shotgun microphones would phase like mad in such number, and even were it possible to set them up, you'd need to track the artist with them as they move. Multiple top quality ambisonic triangles could make it possible in post, but again, you'd pick up some positioning.

7:30 onwards on pipa (that pear-shape Chinese instrument). I’ve been playing that thing for two decades and I can ensure you that this is fake. Most likely she played it but wasn’t recorded at the same time. You noticed when she changed notes, her index finger pressed at the wrong key for two separate occasions, while the sound was still ongoing at the correct tone. OOPSIES edit: i'm not saying she cant play the instrument ppl. geez. the amount of ppl who cant take thumbs down. the point of this whole video is to point out a pre-recorded performance trying to pretend that it was done live. nobody appreciates shitty pre-recording. at least lining up the performance to the sound would be nice. knowing how to play an instrument doesn't mean you cant fake it when recording such things.

Hi, I am a chinese fan of one of the lady in the video (Zhou Jieqiong aka Kyulkyung, the red one playing the pipa). I just want to explain. This performance was broadcasted on TV live and the viewers who attended the show at the time heard the real performance of the musicians. But the audio of the performance broadcasted on TV was indeed a recorded one from a previous rehearsal done the day before. During rehearsal, stations do allow some people/fans to watch, so it's not a secret, the musicians recorded over 5 times that day, and that's where the audio they used for dubbing comes from. On TV the image was live, while the audio was a recorded one. I'm not saying this is true for every show, but chinese show tend to do this to prevent any live broadcast incident. The musicians do know how to play the instruments and have to play themselves though. At least I know the one playing the pipa has played live several time already and she plays really well. PS: I also wanted to add that the 4 of them are not professional musicians, but celebrities in China (actors, singers, dancers...) who happened to be skilled in playing an instrument, they where put together for this special show.

Ok, ok. I've worked on television and radio, so I have to clarify a couple of things. Most 'live' performances, especially on shows like that which are not specifically about academic music and are not recorded in a proper environment like a concert hall, are either pre-recorded or performed by backstage musicians, and that has ONE simply reason: such shows usually have multiple different acts, and it is a PAIN in Mozart's favourite body part to replug new musicians every time and fine-tune the mixer. That's not even to mention that when actually playing live at a venue not designed for acoustic projection, they'd have to mic all the instruments, and getting proper sound out of that requires quite a bit of production tinkery, often not possible/too much hassle to do for a 'live' performance (especially if it's being broadcast live). So, the show per se is, indeed, fake, but that is the industry standard. For good TV performance, look for recordings made in acoustically designed halls, not at TV studios. Those usually have one or two mics on or in front of the stage to capture the sound as it is projected onto the listener.

The girl playing the pipa, Jieqiong (the one chilling in the air) actually majored in pipa in Shanghai Conservatory of Music's secondary before she became an idol/actress. This is what happens in China, because they don't want any mistakes in the piece, so they just put the backtrack on(btw, violins in this case were just for show, just to let people know that its possible to combine traditional instruments with western instruments). I live in China and have seen sooooooo many people do this, well, the band is playing whatever they play, but there is a backtrack that is playing throughout the whole concert and btw 90% of the audience don't even know about that much about the performed instruments, sooooooo yeah!!! There are still real performances in China but most are fake backtracks unless their solo's.

I've played one gig where "fake playing," or whatever it's called, was an actual requirement to even get the gig. It stinks, but sometimes becomes a balance of publicity vs. "real live playing..." It was many years ago when I was in a band at the time, but I didn't know that fake playing was an agreement they had made for the finale festival performance until the day of the gig. They basically don't plug you into the sound system, and blast a pre-recorded track really loudly. I definitely was playing along and all, but you could barely hear what I was actually playing over the recorded track. The whole thing is annoying and makes you feel like a prop instead of a musician lol... Sometimes the musicians can control whether or not they fake-play in a performance, but there are many times (especially high-profile-like stuff like this) where the decision is out of their control unless they turn the gig down. I've heard violinists sometimes fake it by wiping the rosin off their bow. Playing with no rosin would drive me absolutely nuts, but it might explain their really different bow techniques in the video.

It was a requirement to play along to a track for a festival I played awhile back. It was crazy stressful because we had a new-to-percussion cajon player, so it was pretty hard to keep time between her and the track. Overall, I really didn’t enjoy the experience and def didn’t play that festival again!

I still have 4 fine tuners! It’s easier to tune though
@JeremyStreich
@JeremyStreich 5 жыл бұрын
@@user-rb3nx4dj2f The E string is the highest string on the violin. Our ears are much more sensitive to pitch issues in the higher ranges, so intonation on the E-string is much less forgiving. Moreover, E-string is under a lot of tension and is the thinnest string on the violin (which has thinner strings than the other instruments in its family). Over tightening any string may lead to a broken string. So you always tune up to the pitch, not down. The idea here is that you get close to pitch with the peg and adjust with fine tuner. If you snap another string by over tightening, it is annoying and you have to replace it. If you snap an E-string by over tightening, it can, in some instances, seriously hurt you (I had a teacher with a scar on her cheek from a broken E-string). You will notice the E-string is also the only string that should have a tube (rubber typically) it passes through where it goes over the bridge and a parchment patch on the bridge under E-string on most violins. Both of these are meant to prevent the E-string from cutting into the bridge because it is under such pressure.

FACT AND STORYTIME!!! one can fake violin concerts if the violin has a new and fully unrosined bow. That will make very quiet sounds but not enough for the audience to even hear it. Also, a little story. I was in a runway show for aventi and we had people do the same. this included saxophones, trumpets, and violins. Me being a violinist, it was absolutely embarrassing to me that I was in a show with fake violinists, THEY DIDNT EVEN TEACH THEM THE FINGERS. Basically they were new violin with new bows without rosin and they fingered the music they would be faking over and over. But the thing I hated the most was: if they wanted to play a high note off the scale of just the basic 4 fingers on the e string, THEY WOULD ONLY FINGER FOUR FINGERS ON THE BASIC SCALE, ON TOP OF THAT, THEIR FINGERS WOULD BE TOO SHARP OR FLAT. Since I was doing a walk on stage, I had to try not to look at these fake violinists and cringe while walking. At least you guys don't need to experience the nightmare up close.

ah. yes that would be very soft... but i just had another thought about the exact opposite. what about OVER rosining the bow and strings? my friend's learning violin and didn't know this and put too much rosin (by too much i mean i poked the bow and a CLOUD came off it). the bow slid over the strings so smoothly that it was hard to get a loud sound out of it ... put all the other instruments louder and maybe it could cover the sound ...?
