In This video I tackle the worst rotten cupboard I have ever seen. It was covered in 7 layers of lead paint and looked like it was destined for a dumpster. Somehow I managed to saved it and give it a new glamorous life.

As a former nurse, I understand your concern about wearing the PPE, washing your clothes, and fumigating the entire workshop. As mentioned in other posts, lead paint is nothing to be sneezed at with the harm it can cause. It's a miracle we all grew up with functioning brains in the past, between asbestos and lead paint. Again, KUDO to you, Jay, for the beauty you find within each item you transform from "What are you even thinking?" into "OMG! That is breathtaking!" That piece of furniture can now do a Snoopy Dance.

Like other commenters I thought, “why is he bothering?” Great example of how to apply an imaginative and artistic solution to what looked like worthless junk. Bravo! Also thought about the day, years in the future, when another woodworker decides to “fix up this old thing” and is totally shocked and confused by what is under the veneered ply.

I watch resellers of antiques and collectibles. They have the same emotional reaction to some pieces. They apologize to them when they can’t save them, rescue them even if they’re a little damaged and give them loving pats when they have to walk away. So I get it when you “feel” the need to save this piece. And what a gorgeous makeover. I also love the music you used in this video. Very moody and emotional. Thanks Jay.

I’m so glad you are being safe with the lead paint. I lost my house to foreclosure in 2003 so rented an efficiency apartment in an old tavern that was built in 1750. My son took our little domestic cat and I took my 16 year old ruddy Abyssinian. He weighed 9 pounds, but after living in the apartment for only 6 months he weighed only 3 pounds, had gone blind, and couldn’t keep food down. He had a habit of laying on the wide window sills and preening himself and had ingested lead paint that was under the latex paint. It broke my heart to put him down but he was suffering so. Rest In Peace, sweet Sadat......

I had fallen in love with a cabinet only to discover that it tested positive for Lead. I looked for ways to deal with it but everyone told me to send it to the dump. I found a company in the US that is the only company to make a paint stripper specifically for lead paint! You cannot buy this in any box store, at least here in Canada you cannot. The product worked amazingly well. I love your work and your standards are beyond reproach!

@@Flippingdrawers what makes you think I didn't? You said yourself, you basically made a sarcophagus for the bits of the original you kept, my view is that it would have been safer not to disturb the toxic paint with a sander, and just take the dimensions to make a new piece, and as you only really use parts of the original as a skeleton frame, using a few pieces of non-contaminated wood few to form that frame would have been less work. Yes, you wanted to try and save the piece, I'm just not sure that was the right move with this one.

When removing lead-based paint, you should use stripper so there are no fine particles to deal with. The stripper goop can be sealed up in an old can or jar and disposed of at an appropriate facility. You should never sand it off.

I think they make a chemical stripper specifically for lead based paint too. I was really upset to see you scraping and sanding it. 😢

Don’t criticize his technique. I did that once and found out that he knows everything.

His sander filters like a vacuum and he explained that the filter bags were carefully changed afterwards. He can’t include every detail in these videos. I’m sure he was extra careful.

Unless you send me lead paint specific stripper that won’t produce harmful fumes….. assume that I did the best I could in that situation instead of patronising me 😉

The adventurist inside of me, wonders what it would have looked like, if you could have used all the old wood components. Fantastic reuse.

Beautiful work. You’re a nice person to put that kind of effort into such a ragged piece. But if I may “Mom Talk” you for just a moment, I’d be more comfortable having you avoid the lead altogether! The result was very nice, and I enjoy your videos.

What a awesome piece. To think what it once looked like n now a beautiful piece of furniture that’s functional. I would’ve never thought to put it on its side. I could see you put your whole heart into this functional piece. You did a lot of work on it n it shows. I was in Awe when you used that cool tool to make a dowel. I’ve never seen any like that. I’m beginning to think when there’s a new tool out there Jay has got it 😅. You’re becoming a true craftsman n I love it. ♥️♥️♥️👍👍👍👏👏🌟

Where I’m from we call this process, refacing. We used refacing to modernize kitchen cabinets. Your job there is very good. Thanks for the content.
