I can't tell you how long I've waited for this day to come! I finally got rid of the tyvek sound flapping in the window openings! This might not seem like a big deal, but it's been a few months of listening to that each time I'm out there working, and to be honest if I weren't filming I would just throw on some headphones and keep to myself, but trying to film and talk and concentrate (and edit out as much of the noise and interruption as I could) was getting 'old' lol.
With the side decks done, I can now work so much more easily on the rest of the outside aspects of the cabin, so I've started installing the exterior insulation and the windows. I was mentally held up for a while on how to execute these steps by adding exterior insulation. I asked a couple of people their thoughts, looked up some stuff on KZfaq, and settled on what I do in the video. I milled up some strips of cedar to bump out my window rough openings to the thickness of my insulation to create a 'new' sheathing layer. I've never installed anything properly in anything I've built before (🫣😬), so I am trying to do my best and most professional job here, but you know....I'm still a gerbil. 😂
If anyone has any suggestions for me moving forward, please let me know in the comments!
Thanks for watching and see ya in the next one! (I've got a fun Wednesday video for you! 🤩😁)
M 💝

Have them put a drain in the bottom of the tub too in case of emergency, say you heart attack in it or something and need to drain the water fast. Good Job on window, even overkill for a cabin but better overengineered than under. No need to buy all those plastic shims with a forest and sawmill around, pine cutoffs are fine. Keep it up and remember to resist the urge to "Lowes" or "Home Depot" as much as you can.

Hi 👋, Michelle , great progress on the log cabin in the wilderness, should we be calling you the wilderness girl?, 😂 . Or the wild girl from the mountains., that was a slippery slope. 😂 , I remember from a few years ago, putting windows in that I’d made, always make sure you’ve got everything by the side of you, including props, you have to do a little list and put it by the window, saying do not fit window until you’ve got all your tools, screws, hammers, et cetera et cetera😂, it’s going to be amazing when it’s all finished and you better sit in your log cabin or on your decking looking out across the mountainside, can’t wait to see it finished, it’s a joy to watch you working, especially when you realise that you have forgot something, 😂. The hot tub is coming on well shame about the leak in the boiler system., but that could be a bit nasty, you might bear to put in a little solar pump to circulate the water a bit easier, and if you put the bigger fittings in as I think you said the flow will be a lot quicker as well, I could really do with your sawmill, as I have managed to pull some trees out of the river and I’ve still got three or four more trees to take down, I have about a acre and a half of land runs along the river, and I am responsible for that embankment my trees fall into it. I have through move them., Keep up the great work. Look forward to your next weeks work., stay safe, Phil from the moulin France.

The purpose of the blueskin/resisto isn't just a shingled drainage plane, it is also a self healing membrane so when you drive a nail in or other penetrations it coats the fastener and seals the hole. You don't have to do the entire inside of the frame, but it's a good idea to do the entire face of the frame where you're nailing the window flange on. or a non-hardening sealant. Caulking, etc. I put my windows on the exterior of the rigid foam, it makes fastening it a lot harder, but the thermal break on the frame is very important, it is where most of the heat loss occurs with modern windows.

I'm captivated by the creative door design on the cliff cabin shed. It's truly unique. When it comes to construction details, make sure to use flashing around the edges of all openings. Additionally, ensure that the tyvek (or other) membrane is securely wrapped around the header, sill, and studs, as you'll need to apply more flashing after installing the windows, doors, and drip guards. To prevent water penetration, it's advisable to use a rubber roller for even application of butyl flashing; water can't penetrate butyl unless there are small air pockets. Regarding the hot tub, have you thought about using four holes instead of just two? This could help distribute the hot water more evenly. I'm intrigued by the thermosiphon system. Have you also thought about incorporating a Stirling engine to power a pump, thereby increasing the water flow rate?

I'm often sitting here smiling because when we build things alone, we usually run into similar problems. How many times do I remember holding something up and then realizing that I need my drill driver or whatever and it's about a foot farther from me than I can reach and still hold whatever in place lol! The tech for installing windows has changed so much in my lifetime, I’m sure you will be fine, yes I’m sure we could nitpick on some details, but IMHO a lot of that would be personal preference or “that’s the way I was taught to do it” kind of thinking. Well done

The person I learned about waterproofing from always said "think like a raindrop". Do that, and you'll get the layers of bituthene in the correct order. Any brand of asphaltic membrane will work, they are all basically the same stuff. You can get it in various widths. When doing the sill, put half of the width on the sill, the other wraps over the bottom. At the edges, cut the width in half. One half goes up the side, the other goes straight along the bottom. Do the same thing down each side, layering that over the bottom layer. You can make a little bow tie shaped patch for the corners. The stretch Zip brand tape is probably easier, but not necessary. Great job!

I’ve never done all that around windows & can never recall a leak in my house or any customers. But I’m sure what your doing is more than enough especially for a cabin in the wilderness. That’s probably how they do these airtight methods in today’s residential construction.

Do NOT use silicone around windows on the flange! It makes replacing them VERY messy and is unnecessary. I'm glad you didn't have any! ALSO, @25:57... BOTH pipe openings in the hot tub MUST be underwater for the thermo-siphon effect to work. you CANNOT have the hot water pipe above the waterline, otherwise you will boil the water and only steam will come out, with spurts of water. And YES, you need extremely low resistance to flow when relying on using thermo-siphon effect to pump water based on the density change of heated water, a 1" pipe is not big enough to allow for good flow.

Howdy Michelle & Steve, I have a "smart" suggestion for temperature controls on the hot tub. Use a Sonoff TH16 with probe to control a water circulating pump through the wood stove. You can set the temperature from inside the house via the eWelink app to within 1 degree. I would suggest a second pump, on a separate Sonoff Mini R2 to keep the water circulating like a Jacuzzi. Place these controls in a water tight electrical enclosure. Both are accessible via Alexa & you can ask Alexa what the hot tub temperature is from inside your home & make changes on your phone. Just imagine being in the hot tub and asking Alexa to " turn the bubbles on", and you get bubbling jets of water via voice. BTW: the Sonoff Mini R2 has 2 terminals you can use to turn on the bubbles that use no power, but instead use 2 wires on the logic terminals (grey) to activate the chip for manual operation at the hot tub via a rocker switch on the outside of the electrical enclosure. The switch will work in unison with voice command. To avoid runaway heat you will need to divert hot water to a separate place or risk damage to the boiler from over pressure when the probe cuts off flow to the hot tub. For this, divert the water to a radiator with electric cooling fan and another temperature probe and pump.

Speaking as a Canadian, I love the quintessentially ubiquitous filleting/fishing knife as your Tyvek cutting tool... Don't sell that broom! Hang it in place of honour in the "Michygoss Museum of Building History." (Charge a Toonie to view.) While at the welders, don't let them alter the originally welded-in brackets, as the water heats up, all those holes in the brackets will cause a bubbly whirlpool effect -- it's a bonus! Cheers from a (displaced) West Kootenay guy.

Nice video.....thanks Michelle! I love the way you're not afraid to take on any job even though you've never done it before. Shows a lot of self belief!
