We had a class in the 90's called Basic Adult Living. It was a "souped-up" version of home economics and some basic household finance and sex-ed all rolled into one. It was a great experiment and I was told last year that it is still available at my little country school. Has a new name I can't recall at the moment, but has advanced with technology and knowledge. I still remember things I learned in that class.

Wonderful idea. I’m in my 60’s and have always enjoy cooking and baking. So many of today’s young people didn’t have the advantage of home cooking that my generation grew up with. Most parents worked outside the home, meals were grabbed on the go. So many valuable lessons were learned and discussed in the kitchen and around the dinner table.

There are a lot of people who don’t know how to cook. I remember an older lady who took it upon herself to show people how. She saw the need! A station in Nashville picked up the local story. She was showing a single dad how to make a lazy cobbler. You can make delicious food without a lot of work. Yes, there is a need!

@@hensonlauraNot always the case, I’ve been a Classical French chef for over 50 years. Some students can read a recipe but cannot put it into practice. There is much more to “cooking” than you have ever thought about. Please remember that you are dismissing the careers of millions of people. Being able to read the back of a Mac and cheese box does not mean to say you can cook. I wish you all the very best to you and yours from Scotland. Rab

@raibeart1955 Ok... my dream human just arrived in the chat! Classical French Chef...Check. Lives in the most beautiful country on the planet...Check. Has the accent of every steamy dream I've ever had since I found out my grandmother (whose grandparents came to the US on a boat from their homeland and took the surname of said ancestral home [Americanized of course] Scott) was a proud Scott who told wonderful stories of dragons, sea monsters and Sailors coming home to their ladies after fighting the thick fog and the serpent-like creatures of the deep sea. She spoke of returning to the home land of her ancestors to find the one person fated to be her perfect mate wondering the coast awaiting her return. Everything that came out of her mouth was romanticized and beautiful. Our middle school cafeteria lady was the grandmother of a very good classmate and friend. She new I would be by every day for my dose of her accent and bone crushing hugs. One of my very best adult friends (our sons were inseparable best friends) met her Prince Charming online and he was an insanely proud 10th generation resident of Scotland. She has since married him and moved to Scotland where they live MY fairytale dream life sending me blindingly beautiful photos of their travels. It seems like I can't stop being pulled in that direction. I suppose my destiny is to just enjoy the warm, rich envelopment that Scotland has become in my life! Thank you for exposing what it "really" takes to be anything more than a boxed Mac and cheese cook. I am a proud 5th generation Southern woman with the wisdom and secrets handed down to make me somewhat of an anomaly these days; a from-scratch Southern cook who has "fattened-up" more than my share of folks who were both physically and mentally hungry. It's definitely my love language and for someone who loves food of most every kind, it's a wonder I don't have a weight problem myself. I may have a little extra cushion or padding here & there, but I suppose the "chase" of the next yummy meal has been enough to keep me a healthy size. Thank you so much again for letting me daydream about night things in the middle of the afternoon.

Yes, and, I know Home E.C. is, I guess now, being phased out in schools! I started helping out in the kitchen early on as a child and, I was allowed to cook early on in my pre- teens and, when, I was in middle school in Indiana Home E.C.was a requirement for both boys and girls, as well, as machine shop! 13:31 There are a lot of people my age and, even older that don’t actually cook! 14:48

You can even include adult singles who want to learn, and stop being fun of because they don't. Lol AKA my older sister but she is married with kids but still has my mom cooking for her every day. God bless you sister, love you're family, i love that you love and how you kissed you're hubby! I love that so much, you're a great mother and wife I can tell. Loved your recipe here! I haven't made it yet, but it's one I will definitely try. I have always loved to cook, even at an early age. When I got married, I moved to a family farm, which my husband was the oldest of eight children. I was a city girl growing up, but quickly learned to become a farm cook. I learned so much! Wouldn't trade it for the world! I'm glad you are going to start a cooking course for newly weds. I think it's very needed for the younger generation. I thought a cute name for your course might be...."Newlywed and Down-Home Fed", because farm cooking is as down-home as it gets!

I think you need to start with the basics of buying food, washing it, and storing it safely. Maybe add lots of salads to your course for summer meals. Italian pasta salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, Waldorf salad, apple salad, coleslaw. Basic salads that can be used as a side dish for more than one meal. Many young people don't know how to make these.

For first course I would definitely do the basics as another viewer stated (what to always have in your pantry, how to wash produce and store properly, measuring ingredients, cutting, kitchen safety). I used to struggle with knowing when meat was fully cooked so that would be good. Also, just "real" meals. Simple, budget friendly meals and teaching them how to meal plan. Definitely more than one course for sure. Start with basics and move all the way up to gardening and canning! Love it! Wish you the best of luck.

One of the most important lessons my mother taught me as a newlywed and new to cooking variation, was What Spice goes with What food, and what spices go together in a single dish! That saved my bacon so many times in the kitchen. I could spice up a plain meal, toss some new flavors together, spice up my own meats. It was the one lesson that stuck with me besides her tomato flour gravy which was the base of one sauce the base of all, chili, spaghetti, enchilada. Just gravy made with tomato sauce instead of just milk and water. Change the spice, change the dish.

I don't have sisters, so I had to kind of learn on my own through the years. I think it would be good for new cooks to learn how to roast a turkey and how to fix a good beef roast. I've been doing the egg yolk in the bottle for a couple of years now. People don't realize you can just screw the lid on and store the yolks in the bottle in the fridge to save for whenever. You can even add a little water or milk or cream, maybe some salt and shake them up and store in the freezer for longer term storage. Label the bottle with amt of liquid added to make it easier to use in recipes.

I will definitely try this recipe, I’ve never seen anything like it. It sounds yummy. Your idea for newlyweds & just starters is fabulous! 🌺These are some ideas from my experience. In 1973 when I got married I had no idea how to set up a kitchen. What ingredients needed to bake & cook with. And when cooking how they work together for favor. All I knew how to do was bake simple. I didn’t know the difference between soy sauce and Worcestershire 😵‍💫or why an onion & green pepper was important to flavor. I had a cookbook for baking but not for cooking. You know books were the how to back then.

These days groceries are expensive but it is also one of the few bills you have any control over. Learning how to make thrifty healthy meals is needed. Convenience foods are more expensive than just cooking from scratch. I cook up a big pkg of chicken breasts and dice it up for the freezer. I can add to an alfredo sauce, spaghetti sauce, saute with some veggies and serve over rice. Even thaw and make chicken salad. I also brown ground beef with onions and freeze. Then i can toss some in a sauce for spaghetti or a casserole. It thaws in the microwave in a minute or two, instead of trying to thaw a brick of raw meat.

Love the idea of just a good old basic sugar and cracker pie! No messing around with whole eggs, fruit, whipping cream or any ingredient that might carry any real nutrition or flavor. A true Amurican recipe and so easy!

Your idea for a cooking class is great but not just for newlyweds a family cooking class would be wonderful. Children need to have more family valued activities or responsibilities. Maybe one night or day a week with their ideas for their day in the kitchen. Title? “We Can Do This”eg. Best of Luck to you❤️🙏🇺🇸

Meals for a week would be good. Teach how to make a chicken on Saturday or Sunday and use the leftovers during the week for quick dishes like noodle bakes or tacos.

Yes, there is a need to help young people to learn how to cook. When I was in school we had Home economics I appsolutely loved it we would make cookies, cakes and take around to the trachers but luckily I already knew how to cook. I started cooking at 7 years old I would start cooking then when mama got home everything was almost done. Name of cook book: * Help me to cook * * Teach me to cook * * Measure with love & hope * ❤️ Love your show and love your farm. I was raised up on a farm. Thank you, Edwyna from Georgia

I'm so glad I found you! I think your idea is awesome! One thing I never learned until lately was that there are recipe formulas for the 5 mother sauces. 1. Roux/dairy 2. Roux/white sauce 3. Roux/brown sauce 4. Roux/ tomato Italian 5. Hollandaise/melted butter/acid. I would love to see examples of each sauce in a meal. It would've really helped me when I was first married.

Well, I made these. Which brings me to additional questions. When you pull them out of the oven after 15 minutes, how do you know if they are done? They did not look really brown. Is the coconut supposed to be sweetened or unsweetened? Did you toast your nuts? How long are you supposed to leave this in the fridge? If you are going to do a beginner cooking class, just a suggestion that you give your class to a group before so you know how much detail you need to include in the class and the receipt. Thanks again.

Live in rural area and it’s far to a grocery store. So if I don’t have an ingredient then I try substitute. Maybe a video on things u can substitute! Or in addition shelf stable items to always try have on hand. Always get so mad when see great recipe and I’m missing one ingredient. Love the farm! Close to several but only animals here are 2 old country dogs lol

Also keep egg shells for garden. I took Home Economics in Gr 8, 9 in Victoria, BC. It didnt exist in Ontario where our family moved to when dad was transferred to in 1969/1970,

Here are my thoughts on your course. Economical hints like breaking down a whole chicken for component parts. Using larger cuts of meat to make multiple meals. Prepping vegetables in advance. Proper storage food for longer storage. Budgeting and meal planning by using sale ads. Encouraging all family members to participate.

Channel name suggestion- Quick and Tasty for Absolute Begginers. Course suggestions would start with Bare Necessities - basic utensils you need to start with. Then a course on terms. ( my daughter said a woman she worked with didn't know what saute meant, or what sweat the onions meant. That sort of thing)Then, a course on eggs. Maybe a course on meats. Like recommended temps, styles of cooking, how to tell if it's cooked to rare, medium, etc. Then on to veggies. Finally desserts. I'm sure you will be a wonderful teacher, however you decide to set up your class.

I think your cooking coarser is a great idea. Thinking showing how to make substitutions for ingredients needed for a recipe but don’t have, like buttermilk, self rising flour, how to measure things like peanut butter, or shortening in water. Measuring conversions like how many teaspoons equal a tablespoon, how many ounces in a cup. Oh my gosh I can think of so many things that would be great for you to teach young people about cooking that this text would take forever to read 😂. You have such great ideas on your channel already I am sure you will do a wonderful job with the coarse. I can’t wait to see it.

That was another life saver my mom taught me. She learned it from the old old betty crocker cook book. remember those? haha I still have mine she gave me in a binder. Another hint, to tell the newlyweds to go thrifting to find those old cook books. ha

I think it's a great idea for an online cooking course for young people. I think they would be more likely to check out something on KZfaq than pick up a cookbook.

I think it is a wonderful idea. Mac and Cheese should be one of the first recipes to make. Casseroles are good because then, they can take it for their lunch during the week. You can do that and have them put it in two different casseroles dishes. One for supper and one for the freezer type deal.

Yes, there is a need to help young people learn how to cook. My mom walked out when I was 12, so I really never learned how to cook, how to be a good and supportive wife, or much else. She taught me how to scramble eggs, and make tuna salad…that’s about it. Never understood the goal of marriage, so I never married. Class name: “Young Adults’ Cooking Guide” First chapter: “How Not to Burn Water”
