Except that's what fashions aways been. At the top of the elite, they are terribly bored because they lack true strife. So when they invest into the arts the have always promoted avante garde and the most controversial output to wake up the extreme bored and tired rich. I kinda detest this reducing fashions out spokenness to simply just now being crazy, that is as art and fashion has always been. except that most folk( the non rich) can't be frivolous with their wear due to it needing to be practical, not artistic.

I agree, dystopian movies are just too close to home now. We as humans don’t want to all think about the doom that our world is continuing to go into so we’d rather escape that reality with a false reality that is enjoying, nostalgic and comforting. For example, with the blow up of the movie ‘Leave the World Behind’ it has really brought scary conversations to the surface that we all wonder if will one day become our realities (most likely lol)

I think another point is that watching these movies as children is VERY different than watching them as adults. Seeing people older than you fight in revolutions against tyrannical governments is a very different perspective than seeing children younger than you do the same thing. As adolescents we didn’t have the full knowledge of what was happening around us like we do now. So I think our age and growing up during this time has a lot to do with it

That show is what they want now it’s terrifying. i think this is SOOO true! & on top of that i believe that cinematic stylings have a HUGE part to do with it! how can we release ourselves into a world & suspend our disbelief if everything looks too polished? for me, the original hunger games felt much more gritty, natural & filled with stakes due to the cinematography & intentionality placed into it--it's also a certain type of acting--but the new one lacks that gritty-ness & that danger that i felt watching the original.

YESSS!! I posted this sentiment on the new hunger games movie trailer and I 100% agree with you. If you compare the movie (songbirds and snakes) to its book counterpart, panem simply looks to polished and in the books it is described as something quite rusty and old, the hunger games themselves are not that polished and this is simply missing in the new movie

Yeah it's kinda crazy uncanny atm. Thai ppl have been experiencing this and have been using movie theme protests to get international news coverage/recognition, and also pick something other ppl already kinda understand: Katniss' three-finger salute as a protest gesture against the military coup/ totalitarian gov, and Harry Potter theme to protest against "lese majeste" law. Ppl can be sent to prison up to 15 years if they say bad things about the Royal fam. So in this case, "you-know-who" is the Royal fam.

I used to love dystopian literature growing up. I read The Handmaid's Tale when it first came out (yes, I'm old). My favorite authors are Margaret Atwood and Kurt Vonnegut. These studies of human behavior were so interesting to me. The last few years changed my view of dystopian themes. Between the previous president and the pandemic, things were so dark that I had to stop watching The Handmaid's Tale series. I think I got through two seasons. I've thought about going back to finish it, but I'm not sure if I'm ready. Years & Years (British mini-series on HBO?) hit hard too. So many things seemed way too close to reality.

Its still out there, its just changed. The naive and far-off view of dystopia that the stuff from the 2010 had is definitely not connecting now, but there is still dystopian content that works, it just brings the hell of the times closer to the current era. The Last of Us took the perspective less of a cautionary tale but more a tone of how to find purpose and light when things are bad -- with the underlying premise that things are already bad. Barbie painted this era as a dystopia, but did it through a glossy, ostensibly fun and frivolous lens.

I was 9 when the movie 2012 came out. As a kid, I was terrified of the world ending, and the dystopian boom of the 2010s didn't hit me like it did for others. I never got into Hunger Games; I read the first two books of Divergent; the only thing was zombie movies because it seemed so far-fetched it was, to me, something I could just simply think, "What if?" Since the pandemic, I've had continuous apocalyptic dreams, and I feel so little hope for the world that watching dystopian films feels way too close to home. I'm thinking maybe if I indulge in other apocalyptic media, I can get over this looming fear, but it's a hard pill to swallow.

I def agree with you on our perspective being changed and how that changes how we react to certain genres of media, but also i think that the ballad of song birds and snakes just wasnt as good at the original hunger games trilogy lol. It was a little too corny, silly goofy instead of serious, I think it didnt have as strong or as powerful of a message that it was trying to get across, it seemed to be more just for entertainment which is wild to me. (I have read the book and its a whole other level of insane 😭)

Tbosas was definitely not JUST for entertainment lol. It did expand on the trilogy and provide commentary on human nature and government. It's a pretty rich book actually, and I don't understand why you think it's "not as serious" as the trilogy.

@alittleconfused5783 the book def felt more "serious" but the way the movie was written or how the acting ended up was too corny for me personally. @@ariahernandez4279 honestly, if you didn't like the movie, fair enough (even tho I don't entirely agree with you. I actually thought the movie was an overall pretty good adaptation). I just don't really like the idea that tbosas as a whole has nothing to say, which is untrue for both mediums.

It seems that dystopian media has undergone a metamorphosis of sorts. As per what majority of the comments have mentioned, is that dystopian is now too close to our current finite understanding of the future that it now mimics the present. Someone said that it is *scary*. Perhaps now, instead of it being a precautionary tale, it has become a tale of unsettling facts. With that being said, I think dystopian could find new meaning if told through horror stories instead.

i think this may be a reach. society today is more like idiocracy than something as fantastical/ sophisticated than a dystopia. i feel like we are gonna self implode before it gets to that point OR we are still very far from the dystopian future for it to be an exact mirror. I think films of the Sam Esmail ilk feel even more grim (Mr Robot, Leave the world behind). I think there was more of a fantasy / romance vein that specifically captured the YA and teen audience. Similar to the Twilight craze before it. I just think YA adapted books > films just dont hit. I think the next trend coming is actually Book-tok related content being adapted to film

I think it all just personally comes down to the plain abs Simple answer saturation. What made tropes like dystopia media good or so appealing is because it was sort of niche and unique now everywhere you look it’s end of the world this, or post apocalyptic that. I think once media has a cleanse after a few years if the media of today does continue to over kill the trope then maybe just maybe a resurgence can happen. When it feels more organic rather then forced, i honestly think that was one of the appeals of twilight being such a big hit there wasn’t an interesting take on young love at that time and so ppl caught wind and it just took off to be a hit.

The new Hunger Games prequel was definitely made more for the people who enjoyed the book series rather than casual movie goers who just watch the movies. In times of peace we seek content to help us think outside of our privileges...in times of chaos we'd rather watch things that take us away from reality. Of course, some of Gen Z is now grown up compared to when they were younger and can only imagine the real world. You all are in the real world now. When we are teenagers we start to seek more adult stuff because it makes us feel more enlightened. When you are in the world as an adult, you start to relate too much to what is on screen.
