one thing that annoys me about the internet is how quickly they forget about a person's controversies as soon as they do something ‘iconic’ or even just have a good fashion moment, song, album or movie. they only seem to care about their wrongdoings momentarily before they're looking for the next person to hunt down. for me personally, if someone really annoys you then you can just block or unfollow at the click of a button. simple.

Controversies aren't convictions. You can forget about something if it turned out to be false or blown out of proportion and that's exactly what happens with doja. People cancel her over rumors or a situation they don't know all the details to and they blow that shit up when really it's a non issue

right, a lot of artists don't 'like their fans,' which, cool, whatever. but doja cat has continuously done egregious shit! from being in those tinychat rooms back in, what, 2020? her racist, pedophilic boyfriend, her blocking her boyfriend's victims when they came to her, her deciding to rep a shirt with a literal white supremacist/n*zi. i don't care if she's 'trolling,' or 'rage-baiting.' at some point, we have to realize this is just the type of person she is. if she gets a rise out of outraging people - who're rightfully upset with her actions - then she's wack asf.

i would disagree on the point that the doja hate online was bc of the parasocial relationship stuff. it was very likely a part of it, but a huge reason from my personal observation was her blocking people on twt who were telling her that her current boyfriend groomed/took advantage of them. not to mention how doja then went on to demonize a filipino food (balut) out of ignorance, inciting further criticism. the people i’ve seen choosing to stop supporting her aren’t doing so out of a misplaced sense of parasocial betrayal, but bc they don’t want to support someone who seemingly doesn’t care if her partner is an abuser, demonizes cultural foods to be edgy, and now proudly wears a shirt with a neo nazi on it

Heres my take. People dont like it when internet personalities reach to a point if success and virality that is unattainable. For example tube girl. Every gurl on tiktok was admiring her "bravery" for filming in public and tried to emulate that confidence and thus made a trend. After a certain point of her success people started calling her cringe and hating all her because the tube girl who was once just a nobody filming a video is now a tiktok sensation which is getting attention from other celebrities wanting to use that fame and fashion brands inviting her to shows to boost their relvance. At the end of the day some people just want "normal" people to stay small for themselves to enjoy but when they start monetizing off that success they start hating on her because they contributed to something they didnt relize could get her to a point that is unreachable to them and gets jealous
@toms5996
@toms5996 7 ай бұрын
Agree to a degree. I think the start of a person's internet success can be as you described. But if the person has nothing more to offer or is deemed problematic, then the second part of your comment comes true - the negative feedback. If the internet personality seems authentic without problems and has something new to offer, then the success can continue. Of course those internet personalities that can survive this cycle you mentioned are very few.

@@ahmedbanaga8185 Agreed. But as social media is so uncontrolled with people of all ages, that can happen. Big social media platforms are somewhat controlled in Europe but completely uncontrolled elsewhere. European Union will put an electronic ID check on all social media platforms as we have now on all governmental, city, banking and healthcare platforms ( a biometric check for age) in the coming future. DIW (Digital Identity Wallet Europe) came into effect in 09/2023 in the EU - DIW is a combination of biometric identification with governmental digital birth certificate. I would imagine all social media platforms will get an DIW check in the EU in 2024, thus banning everyone under 18 from all social media platforms. The moment EU does it, the rest of the world has to follow, like USB-C for iPhone.

Yeah I feel like this video definitely missed the mark about WHY a lot of these people are hated and maybe it doesn’t “matter” in the grand scheme of things of what makes them popular (though I would say infamous is a better word) but a lot of the people (featured in this video at least) receive ‘hate’ for genuinely problematic behavior such as being or supporting predators and SAers, being or supporting racist or making racist remarks, genuinely being bullies themselves whether cyber or otherwise, etc. and people are rightly speaking up about it online. Now, it’s hard to tell this to chronically online people, but unfortunately no matter how just, a lot of those problematic behaviors and actions aren’t making it offline, so if you didn’t go on the internet in the past week, how would you know not to stream a certain album or watch a certain movie? So I think sadly because many people do not ensure that the entertainment they consume doesn’t come from problematic people or genuinely don’t care, that is why internet ‘hate’ doesn’t translate to irl cancelling. But I don’t think that’s a valid enough excuse to keep supporting these people who we know are problematic just because it may not fully cancel them.

I think reason people dont pay much attention to celebrities lives is that people have jobs, children, schoolwork and plenty of other responsibilities. So simply dont have time to care about what celebrities do on social media.
@V_4_Versace
@V_4_Versace 7 ай бұрын
@@MichaelaBetikova I’m sure that true for many, but I also think a lot of people would like to *not* support rapists, neo-nazis, bullies, etc. but as I said it’s hard to find that information on every form of entertainment if you’re not chronically online and yes without the time to do so. So I do wish at times platforms like google or even traditional media like newspapers and tv, did a better job of saying when someone is genuinely problematic or at least provide a rap sheet or something (you’d be surprised at how many people have them), so at least people wouldn’t be blindly supporting problematic people and if they still choose to, they can make that decision in a more informed way.

i think what people don't realize is that the things celebrities get hate or "cancelled" for, just aren't taken that seriously by the vast majority, and the outrage is coming from the vocal minority. and in many cases: even the vocal minority themselves deep down feel like the controversies are not serious enough to stop supporting said celebrity if they're talented or attractive. example: some celeb wore a clothing or had a hairstyle that was cultural appropriation. sure they'll get backlash from the "big" users on a social media platform, and others will follow said big user and also condemn the celebrity. but at the end of the day, deep down, most people dgaf. they dont think cultural appropriation is that serious to stop supporting the artist. another example: a celebrity is close to a person with SA allegations (aka a lot of these female artists dating awful men). yes the outrage is there, but it's performative. because at the end of the day: most people don't care enough to stop liking or supporting said celebrity. they dont think being guilty by association holds that much weight. even less so when it's allegations, and not a confirmed conviction.

I think that with Doja, she’s trying to dead those parasocial relationships so bad that she’s turning the rest of us who are fans of her music off. Like I can see that she’s a troll but this recent post with the t shirt, I’m so turned off by her and her music. I really hope that she can realize that there are some of us that want to see her succeed and do more but this is getting really bad. Idk maybe that makes me a fake fan for saying that but I truly want to see her do better unlike other fan bases who don’t care what they do.

hey rumi :) i really like these kind of videos you do but i do miss your tv reviews. There have been many british and international shows and movies added to netflix (and new seasons) as those aren't affected by the writer's strike. Are you considering making reviews for those? For example sex ed s4, everything now and love at first sight. (all british i think). I'd LOVE your review on these

heyyy! as much as i'd LOVE to...my hands are kinda tied for the time being. Since these shows are distributed by Netflix, which is currently a struck company, I can't cover it right now due to the SAG strikes. This has been really hard on a lot of us TV creators &I want to get back to the reviews as much as y'all do (maybe more haha). In the meantime I really do appreciate you supporting my other commentary content. It really means the world

I think the phrase 'cancel culture' was created by a demographic that looked from the outside in on how events unfold. Perhaps the fact that people are held accountable is scary to some people, even scarier to these people is that sometimes people get more visibility whatever they do. But there has never been 'cancel culture' or 'wokeness' as such - at least here in Europe, not in the US either. It's just a new kind of awareness and the whole complex system social media, fandoms, toxicity and the whole attention economy of it all creates. This is sometimes difficult to navigate to anyone. What comes to fandoms, they can become very aggressive and fast. ETA: I liked your analysis. I think 'drama' channels should watch this. And to a certain degree I think drama channels actually are aware of 'attention economy' and no longer even use the phrases 'cancel culture' etc.

What an interesting perspective that coincidently is just simply wrong. It's gaslighting of the highest order to call mass harassment and attacking character of any individual as "accountability". And not even stopping there, but going on to harass everyone else for associating with that person. Because accountability for wearing a silly shirt is losing your job, reputation, money, friends. Silly, they should have known not to step out of line.

you can state that "cancel culture doesn't work" but that seems like it's not really being objective. the fact of the matter is that the social media age has compelled people to care more about what values artists actually represent and where the money of the consumer is going, and thats not a discussion to just shut down media illiteracy you have touched on and the pervasiveness of industry marketing machines are a barrier that the masses need to overcome in order to actually see the values of a popular artist, its not just that society is so fucking cynical it doesn't care about supporting people who make selfish or cruel decisions

None of this is new, people have been saying all through out media history that "there's no such thing as bad press". The musical "Chicago" was made on Broadway in the 1970s about women committing murders in the 1920s to get written about in the papers to then become famous jazz singers. We all know by now that being polarizing and appealing to negativity translates to views.

If you think about it, it’s nothing new, as much as it feels like it is due to today’s heavy association with social media. Remember how hated/controversial Tyler the creator was when he first stepped on the scene 😂 went from that to a very much loved legend.

The thing about doja is she is one of the new generation girls that are talented and her music is catchy and people like it and liked her she didnt need demon antics to sell her music people like her already. She is still doing good cause people like her music no one in rap is making music like her its all ass ass ass, he music is different. We in desperate need for more upcoming talented artists. Cardi : unfortuntly not talented people liked her persnality although these days people find her loud obnoxious and annoying. Megan: talented rapper but her music isn't good or cormercial it's repetitive and people tird of twerking also don't like her anymore. personality fake. Coi: no one checking for her Latto: no fans she can't win without features Ice: trending right now but not talented. Swaeetie: fell off ( no talent) Glorilla: fell off (no talent) Doja: talented all rounded artist: antics are throwing a few people off. But people still like her music.
