Hands down the best episode of the series, it leads you to understand more the motivations of Mizu of why she is the way she's now. And is a Rollercoaster of emotions watching her being so happy and lose everything just for showing her true self. And, I really enjoyed your reaction, it was as if I was watching for the first time this episode

there was a meme that was like 'when i'm in a fumbling competition and my opponent is this guy:" and it's a picture of mikio 💀

I find the way our perception of the bunraku puppet theatre story changes so interesting... from identifying Mizu initially as the ronin.. and then the realisation of a perspective shift to the bride.

I agree with you about that is not so important to know who really betrayed Mizu for the bounty, because each of them betrayed her on their way (Mikio's pride and cowardice and her mother's manipulations). But in my personal opinion, the mom did it. Mizu didn't deserve that, it makes me so mad everytime I rewatch this episode, my favorite by far. The storytelling is art in this.

This is definitely one of, if not, the best episode of the season IMHO. I don't want to defend Mikio too much because shanking the old lady was a dick move, but I don't think his reaction to Mizu was hurt pride. Despite him saying "enough", she taunts him with insults, then gets turned on holding a naked blade to his throat. I think that type of unexpected emotional chaos would throw anyone for a loop. I think it's cool that we learn that Mizu's birth is shrouded in mystery and many, including Mizu, are operating based on assumptions. And I hope you write out those scenes so that later you can construct a narrative to incorporate them. It sounds like the Muses call your name sometimes, it'd be a shame to ignore them :)

I agree about Mikio. At the time I was pretty heated and making jokes, but in actuality, I also wouldn’t have been cool with someone putting a blade to my throat and kissing me. During editing, I did regret my reading of that scene a bit, especially because I think I somehow missed Mikio saying “enough” while watching. I think I needed to hear someone else’s opinion to get a better handle on my own, so I appreciate the comment!

I've pondered several times about who betrayed Mizu. Her mother or her husband? The motivation for her mother is easy - for the money, to feed her opium addiction. For the husband... just for the money? If it was for station - that makes no sense... "Lord, I married an obviously mixed race woman who you think is an abomination - but I'm betraying her now - can I be nobility again please?" .. also, is it his lord that has put the bounty up for a blue eyed woman? Why? I'm not sure if the flashback is set before or after Mizu has killed the first of the four - if it's after, I can understand a bounty being raised.. nut can't think of a reason if it's before. I've also pondered whether her husband's transgression was cowardice - which would explain why he left when he saw Mizu being confronted by warriors. In the end, it may not really matter which of them betrayed her.. one, or the other, perhaps both.... or even - neither - the latter may even fit better into the tragedy of Mizu.

I’m so glad you mentioned the possibility that it was neither of them. Not enough people consider this option. I read another comment that pointed out the beginning of the episode when Mizu first starts her revenge quest, she’s not wearing her glasses. She was just openly flaunting her blue eyes to the whole world. And if anyone who simply walks past her can see her eyes they can easily describe her to any assassins or bounty hunters. So if it truly was an outside party who reported her to the authorities, and not her mother or her husband, then they all got into this huge mess for NOTHING. Mizu was conflicted over who betrayed her between two people who ended up being innocent. Mikio and the mother were hell bent on pointing the finger at each other because they knew they themself didn’t do it so it HAD to be the other, and they fought and squabbled and got killed for naught. If it really was neither of them, that makes this betrayal, not really a betrayal at all. My heart broke all over again when I first realized this. The only hole with this theory is that Mizu was still dressed as / presenting as a man when she was going around town asking people for information. But the bounty hunters that came for her at Mikio’s house KNEW that they were looking for a woman. So that means whoever sold her out would have to know that she is female.

I love that I already have two comments saying conflicting things about who actually betrayed Mizu. I don’t know if I’ll ever come to a conclusion since it’s obviously been left open to interpretation, and I think it’s cool to see them

I think my main argument against that might be that her opium addiction could have kept her from thinking practically, and I don’t really see what Mikio would have to gain. That being said, I think you’re partially right that Mizu’s mother didn’t have much to gain either. Logic can’t really be applied to the situation to me.

@@jachyra9 That doesn't seem to fit with the storytelling. We're told that mixed race people are "pitiable, monstrous" not "executed on sight, along with anyone harboring them" - edit. then again, Mizu may be a special case because of her specific heritage .

@@jachyra9 So you think her mother would be executed for harboring Mizu, even if she gave her up, but the guy that willingly married and harbored her would have all doubt dispelled about his honour? That makes no sense to me.
