Some people are afraid of being left when they are old. My grandmother has over 500 grand in the bank and is very frugal, not on this guys level though. My parents moved her down to gulf shores when they retired into a nice apartment 5 miles from their house and she knows my mom a retired nurse would never abandon her. My grandmother never wants to be a burden or alone and that stash in the bank she's been saving will keep her well taken care of for the rest of her days if something happened.

It's obvious that you don't know much about investing, but there are many many different types of investing. you are right that for something like stock trading you wouldn't want to do it with no savings because you could get screwed, but for index funds, mutual funds etc you won't need to worry about that.
