Fella, you better start at least wearing safety glasses, or you definitely will sooner or later regret it!! I know this by experience. Twice I have had to have metal grinded out of my eyeball because the doctor could not pull it out!! And both times I was told that I was at the edge of losing my eyeball!! Seeing is a precious thing!! Once it's gone it does not return!!!

I really could care less what you think!! It was my eye and I know the dr. had to grind out the sliver after it broke off when he tried to pull it out!! Then he had to grind away the rust ring left on my cornea. And this just shows how stupid some folks are!! So, by all means you get you a grinder and grind metal all you want with your unprotected eyes wide open to see the slivers fly!! @@FukkKZfaqsAss

The end result is interesting but kinda rough. It's very pretty, and I love that combination of the feathered look of the blade and the bright gold/brass of the grip. No matter how well you cleaned it up, that poured handle has some serious problems that'll become apparent later on, as that rough area near the transition from blade to tang is probably going to crack with the stresses of use, as well as accumulating dirt and grime very quickly. Plus it looks like it could slip out of your hand with a good swing. These problems could be mediated if you had used a bolster of any kind, even an integral bolster, and a bit of texture or fluting on the grip. Still, this is a very nice idea and even display piece. I'd love to see you refine it a bit more on another build. This is also the first time I've seen someone use a step drill to make their blade. Pretty cool.
@michaelkaiser1864
@michaelkaiser1864 4 ай бұрын
That bit is some good steel! I'm a bit like you. Its interesting but before the "feathering", it would've made a GORGEOUS blade. I'm not wild about the brass. No holes in the tang to hold it fast. Too smooth. Not a working blade at all. Curious about the balance. It may be spot on. Safety? None to be seen. Bad things happen very fast. That said, there's some skill here and he did it like HE WANTED IT LOL!

Yeah that handle gave me serious pause. Too smooth, not to mention just a bit too much impact vibration and it's splitting in half... I was given a knife several years ago, the Buck Knife 100 Year Anniversary 1902 - 2002. if you Google that, it's the fixed blade, black handle knife. Sturdy build, seems good quality steel, good balance and the hilt even has a finger guard and some shallow finger grooves which would aid in gripping... if it wasn't completely smooth! I'd never even consider actually using it unless I had a bladesmith/leather worker wrap the handle for me first. It's nothing but a show piece right as it is.

Without wanting to deconstruct your comment.. It had an oil-cooled heat treatment (8:30) after being passed through acid to blacken the engravings. On the other hand, it does not seem to have been reheated with slow cooling afterwards to make the blade more flexible and less brittle.

I made a similar blade during my Engineering Apprenticeship, I used D2 tool steel, it s construction went towards on of the modules in forge work & hand finishing, I still have it today, It had none of the etching or cutouts shown here as it is a utilitarian tool has 10 mm Phenolic sheet scales and can easily punch though an oil drum or cut through Sigmoid steel packing strap/band.

Made a knife similar to this when in high school. I bought a nice Schrade 12" fixed blade Bowie knife, took off the handle then made a shape I liked out of wood with nice finger grooves. Made it so it would slide on/off the blade. Cast aluminum instead of brass handle on it using the wood handle I made to pack the sand around for the mold. Finished it off nice. Loved it, so did every one else. some yrs later some one stole it from me.

Yes I was in high school and did not know anything about making a knife blade, but, wanted to make a custom knife. So I started with the Schrade 12" fixed blade Bowie knife because I liked the way it looked and it had a section of carbide on the cutting edge. Then cast the custom aluminum handle on it. Shop teacher was impressed I did it that way so I did not have to make the blade. Wish I had a picture, it looked awesome.@@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
