Driving the coolest classic Maserati that nobody remembers. If you have already watched the Car Cave that this rare Maserati Indy 4700 is associated with, then you'll know it shares residence with another '70s sports car icon - the V12 Lamborghini Espada.
This is a Maserati Indy - a swoopy four-seater V8 GT that formed a permanent memory for owner Steve Parry when he was a boy. Why? Because his parents bought this exact car brand new and his Mum used to regularly use it during the 1970s. It has been repainted in various colours since its original metallic brown hue, but Steve accidentally stumbled across the auction sale of the Indy before realising it was the same car he'd lost touch with all those years ago.
In this episode Jonny gets to drive the Indy and experience what an original RHD Indy 4700 feels like on the British roads.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.

V4 and V5 were 2 racing Maserati models with 16 cylinders from late 20’s and early 30’s, V4 3.9 liter and V5 4.9, the V stands for the engine configuration and the 4 and 5 for the cubic capacity(4 and 5 liters respectively)

My father drove one of these around '74 with an identical finish. His company was the Australian agent for Maserati back in the early 70's, so I was a very keen fan particularly of the Merak, Bora, Indy and Khamsin. As an 11 year old I'll never forget experiencing 90mph up through the gears on a local freeway and the sheer power on the changes pulling me back in the front passenger seat! A beautiful, very powerful car and a real head-turner.

That noise!!!!! What a delight to hear... Citroen invested a lot into Maserati, transforming it into a much more structured car company than it was before. Unfortunately, Citroen itself was a weak, overexposed company whose finances couldn't weather the storm created by the 1973 oil crisis and, following the Peugeot takeover of '74, Maserati no longer was part of their plans. Citroen actually put Maserati into liquidation in 1975, as there simply were no takers for the heavily indebted company. This prompted the Italian government to intervene to save the jobs in Modena, with public funds but putting Alejandro DeTomaso in charge.

I think this was designed before Citroen or certainly the Ghibli was and this is like +2 variation of that. Citroen had their hand in Khamsin which was a follow up to this Indy. Citroen didn't allow this to live on as basis for the next quattroporte. Frua made one or two on their own and called it Maserati but it wasn't made official. Loads of money was spent on developing a compact V8 that would fit Citroen SM based Quattroporte II but that engine never went to production. US federalisation went on to make it impossible to sell hydropneumatically suspended cars like Citroen in the northern America. No money left to have the V6 engined Quattroporte II type approved in Europe so made to order only and sold in very limited number. Wasn't well received. Next Quattroporte was based on a big DeTomaso car, Deauville

Wilbur Shaw won the 1939 and 1940 Indy 500 in a Maserati. He was hoping to be the first to win three in a row, but a freak accident prevented it. Shaw had inspected all the wheels days before the race, finding one to be out of balance. He wrote "USE LAST" on the wheel in chalk, so it would not be put on the car unless they ran out. Day of the race, there was a fire in the garages. None of the cars were damaged, and the race went on. Near the end of the race, Shaw lost control and crashed. It was later found that, because the chalk mark on the tire had been washed off while putting out the fire, the wheel he marked to not be used had been put on the car-and broke. As of 2022, no driver has won the Indy 500 three times in a row

Recently came across an American serviceman in our local shopping centre and he was in a Mustang. Yes If only he’d kept the FF🤔 I tried to buy one about 10 years ago now, Needed restoring, But Christ it was rotten & beyond saving I was shocked 😳 That’s not just Jenson! If none of them 70’s cars were looked after that’s how they ended up unfortunately 😖 Thank you for interest 👍

Maserati were the understated supercars of their day, not loud and in your face like todays are. Drive down a high street and they hardly got a notice, far less than an E Type 2+2. Elegant Italian styling, conservative, yes, almost British like in that respect.

I didn't expect to relate to Steve, but I also picked up tinkering from my grandad, though I only ever saw his tools and his fixes, never watched him work. My dad is fairly handy, but he is a bit of a bodger - able to make things work around the house but leaves more complicated things to professionals. I remember breaking a toy at my grandparents' house as a kid and being sad that I wouldn't be able to play with it anymore. I was completely shocked to see it fixed the next time I came. It was a visible change, but an upgrade from a broken plastic piece to a shiny metal one. It was the first seed of "things can be fixed, and even improved". A seed my parents watered by letting me take apart anything that stopped working - toasters, alarm clocks, radios - they just snipped the plug off so that it couldn't be plugged into the wall and left me to it.

Nailed it again Jonny! Had just finished the Car Cave episode of Steve's collection and had to wait a couple of hours till I finished work so I could watch this and glad I did, what a lovely sound the Indy makes, what a great looking car and really suits the Green, do not think I have ever seen a Indy before and I so want one! Might have to source the airfix model that has been re-released and own a mini indy in this shade of green. Kudos to Steve for tracking the car down and buying it back, he is true car enthusiast.

I’m doubly excited about this video! 1stly I love old Maseratis, with the Merak being one of my absolute faves, and I was aware of the rarer Indy, but 2ndly as soon as the video started I recognised the village you were driving through; Rosset! I live a couple of villages down the road. I’ve not been lucky enough to see the Indy passing by though.

The bill of sale makes interesting reading. All in, the Maserati cost £9406 in Aug '71, minus the part exchange of a '71 Range Rover and a '70 Jensen Intercepter leaving a balance to pay of £2000! I'm guessing this is worth more than those two put together now too.

Cracking car, cracking bloke. Years ago at a petrol station near Hyde (Manc) there was a guy filling up. I walked over and asked him what it was. He asked me to guess, and I guessed Ferrari. Oops. Anyways, he gave me a look of contempt and told me it was an Indy. So I slunk off. Climbed into me Pug GTI and sped off. In hindsight I would have been more generous to a young lad in his twenties. But yeah, an Indy is a bit obscure.
