Zach, I do believe carbon is stronger than you give it credit for. I've been riding a 2003 carbon road bike for the past few years and it has held up well to tons of abuse including riding off curbs all the time. Just my 2 cents.

At the same time I have a $300 envy seat post that only lasted 2 years before cracking and yes I tq every thing down to spec so changed to the tried and true Thompson masterpiece

@@mikewarner2971 that’s the problem, there’s so many different stories online I don’t blame people for not trusting it. For things like forks and frames I wouldn’t worry too much, they are usually built to withstand way more abuse than what normally happens when riding. FWIW, my new bike is 100% steel and aluminum and I love it, no downside to going with the classics.

Yea I agree he a little ignorant about carbon. I'm 6'2 over 200 lbs and carbon forks have always treated me well. Just have to make sure they're a quality brand.

@@Ferrichrome the problem with carbon is mainly longevity when you're not riding it. If you keep your bike indoors it will be fine, but the abuse from locking a bike to a rack, getting wet and frozen and salty in winter, causes the carbon to slowly weaken. If you ride in perfect condtions all the time and never lock your bike to a rack then this is a non issue, but for most who ride fixed gear, its a reliable form of transportation. As soon as you dent your top tube on a rack, or leave your wet bike overnight to freeze, or slip and crash causing damage to the frame, you start to run into issues.

@@jimiwexler1260 Pure misinformation. Carbon is reinforced plastic; plastic does not rust or corrode in the rain. A steel bike is far more likely to be damaged by weather. The whole freezing thing is just paranoia, or you'd have to be really unlucky. That said, I do agree with you that carbon is less durable when it comes to impacts. However, it is still really durable. Have you seen any mtb carbon wheel test videos? They can ride with no tire for a while before any damage. I highly doubt Tyrant is spec'ing the fork to be like a thin wall road fork and is instead having thicker walls like mtb parts.

That rear cable routing is great for those of us living in places that legally require both brakes. Wish my bike had it! Would be neater than zip ties.

I've ridden carbon bikes for years and have not had an issue with fork or frame under normal riding conditions including bumps, potholes, curbs, off-road, etc. They're designed to work under those directions. The only time you'll have an issue is if it's stressed in a different direction than it's intended or you have faulty construction, but same applies to metal frames, it's just their tolerances might be a bit more in those instances. I'm just saying you can ride it hard without worrying so much.

2:47 is really one of the big reasons why I went to steel. The other reason is I really like uniformly sized tubing. All the weird tapering and whatnot of aluminum frames doesn't look good to me.

There is a low tech technique for setting chain tension I learned growing up up on Schwinn Stingray clones and I still use when changing gear ratios at track; find an old paperback book you can jam between rear wheel and downtube (drugstore romance novels are a good size and no guilt about damaging quality literature). Centers and tensions in one step, no futzing around. May not be available when you get flat on ride, but can save a minute in the shop.

Hi Zach, I've been watching your channel for a while and thanks to it I want to start riding fixed gear. As it happened, I've come across a 2021 fuji feather and an eddy merckx strada (mid-90s, will need to be converted). Which bike should I go for in your opinion?

Have you built up or ridden a Dolan pre cursa? As a fixed gear frame set it doesn’t feel chattery just stiff. You’ll get tired if you ride for a long ride but anything up to 40 miles feels great.

my silver cinelli histogram had the same slipping dropouts problem. Was kind of annoying to change wheels/ adjust tightness

I totally empathize with your paranoia about carbon, but it’s not a high-tech niche the way it used to be. People are riding mountain bikes that have a lot more carbon on them than just the fork. I know someone who races CX and just crashed out hard enough to take them out of commission for the next couple months and their carbon race bike is totally fine. Some skepticism is healthy, but the fork isn’t going to explode without warning any more easily than that aluminum tubing will. EDIT: also, bike looks nice! Not my personal taste, but I agree that I prefer it to the flashy, shaped tube, bad early 2000s sci-fi movie prop vibe that a lot of aluminum frames have.

Hey Zach, would love to hear your thoughts on the Poseidon FX "tracklocross" frameset. $200 for a full-aluminum frame + fork that can fit up to 700x40 tires seems like a pretty sweet deal, especially for something like a winter bike or gravel grinder, etc. I hear the company is great to deal with and they have a real mission to make good bikes accessible/make cheap bikes good, the frames are warrantied well, but I've also heard very mixed reviews about stuff like paint quality and geometry. IIRC Spindatt has some kind of deal worked out with them.

I ain’t him, but i got one. Customer service is awesome and i got 650b x 2.1’s in there. And a pair of 2.0 29er (700x50) fit. Not a ton of room with in the rear w that though. (Both 23mm internal width rims)

Imo you are just wrong about carbon forks and Carbon being weak in general. Between my carbon mtbs and carbon cross bike I’ve thoroughly abused some carbon off road bikes for 3+ years with zero damage let alone failures.

stainless steel/chromed insert are kinda dumb. this can be hard on the threads on some cheaper threaded axles and nuts, as you need to torque down good. should be made of slightly softer steel (cro-mo?), or the surface textured somehow. they made them replaceable after all, so no need for them to remain undented and shiny.

Brakes should be mandatory on all fixed gear road bikes. Why idiots like this presenter, and others I've seen, promote riding without brakes, I can never understand. It is ludicrous to suggest that trying to back pedal to stop is in any way effective. I was a club rider in the 1950's, when virtually everyone rode a fixed wheel, and the idea of not fitting brakes would have been considered the height of stupidity.
