Out and about Walking

Күн бұрын

So, today we have strayed away from the Cotswolds in search of which may well be the most photographed & Instagrammable thatched cottage in England! For this we find ourselves out and about walking in the village and civil parish of Dunster which is located in the north-eastern boundary of the Exmoor National Park which just sits in the West of Somerset which is in the South West of England. Exmoor also is part of North Devon.
In 2011 the village had a population of 817. The village is 4 km (2.5 miles) southeast of Minehead and 32 km (20 miles) northwest of Taunton.
The Priory Church of St George is 15th century and is a Grade I listed building.
Dunster is said to be the largest and most intact medieval villages in England. It has over 200 listed buildings! It seems that no matter where you are in the village there is always something eye catching to see!
One of the major attractions in Dunster is Dunster Castle which is operated by the National Trust. The village in it's heyday was a centre for the wool and cloth trade. A present day reminder of this is the Yarn Market which was built by George Luttrell. The Luttrell family were synonymous with Dunster as they occupied the castle for some generations. The National Trust acquired the castle in 1976 from Colonel Walter Luttrell.
Dunster caught my eye after seeing a segment on ITV West Country News featuring a thatched cottage called "Rose Cottage" and it's owner (the cottage shown in the video thumbnail). You can watch the news report segment here : www.itv.com/watch/news/inside... . It is well worth watching as the owner of the property (Dennis Coath) is interviewed and gives us a heartwarming insight in which he talks about the history of the cottage and also you get a brief look and sense into what the cottage looks like on the inside - It is stunning! Dennis is a former ITV reporter and now retired he is a full time author with three books published, which he talks about during his interview. I think you will agree...what a lovely chap Dennis is!
There is just one hidden OAAW logo in this video, can you spot it? It is in a wheely good place which I used sparingly :D
You may well notice that I picked up the pace a little during the last 10 minutes of the walk, this was because my camera was running dangerously low on battery and it was absolutely vital that I reached the planned finishing point as I thought it would make for quite a nice way to bring the walk to an end.
Thanks for walking with me.

We had a Florida condo in Bonita Springs (near Naples) only a parking lot away from a church. They rang the bells and played a hymn on them every noon except Sunday. Beautiful. They are still out there, but seems like England plays them more.

I can’t recall if you said you use headphones or not to listen to the walks but if not I can’t recommend enough to give it a try as the binaural sound is quite something through headphones. Your kind thanks goes a very long way and means a lot to me knowing that you genuinely enjoy these walks. My goodness Sir🕶️! Very impressive and gorgeous walk! This video format is very advanced indeed, good job! 7am sharp, we turn around as the hours strike, on the very last dong your logo echoes it. I reversed/replayed intro 4 times. 😘 You used a superior microphone too, the birds throughout were louder than a rock concert. Nice😁! Fabulous "wagon wheel" yarn market, walked around the hub 3 times me did to study the construction. After that I must've walked into a Worm Hole for over and over me feet froze in place so me eyes could stare at the wonderments. Very cute move, without warning the lens is daffodil'd. And aye, you found me sweet snow-bells. A shocking event, crazy talking seagulls, where'd they come from and thence go to so abruptly. I'd swear I 've seen these gardens in old British mystery movies. Queerest yet, the gulls timing sounded like some THING was screaching and moaning from that well... Yea I know we looked in and saw nothing...but... Oh dear, Sir💂, I MUST rewalk this video many more times. 🚶sure was sparingly exerting himself, you need to have a talk with that boy. Lovely lovely. Thank you‼️(too too many 🤍s to list)

Good day, L.J. Hope you are all good. Arguably this walk might just be our finest yet, it is definitely going to be a tough act to follow, that's for sure! The well was filled with 🪙. You may have noticed that before entering the Memorial Gardens, I looked partially down the road towards the arch crossing the road, did that because I wanted to give the viewer a sense of what was down there but then after it came to light that I couldn't actually get through the gardens to the church as I originally intended, so had to double back if this all makes sense? Did the link to the news report in the description work for you??? As always thanks ever so much for every minute of your time...it means a lot!

My husband and I spent a lovely week some years ago in Dunster at a lovely B&B and the famous square turret of the castle was not too far from our bedroom window. (Dunster has been used for filming quite a lot I believe). We also walked over wild and beautiful Exmoor for more strenuous walks and the coast is very near too. Thank you for bringing happy memories of our time in Dunster. I'de like to go back for another visit. What a wonderful and interesting walk, and what a fine spring day you had to make it! The birds certainly entered into the spirit of the walk, as they were in full voice! I lost count of the many types of chirps and bird calls that I heard as you walked along. I appreciated the closeup of the lovely lilies of the valley (or May bells, or whatever they are called in the UK), as they are amongst my favorite flowers- probably because they so eloquently bespeak of spring. I also thought I saw roses as you walked. Were they? If so, you are way ahead of us in NY state! (Our start blooming in May at the earliest, depending on the weather). This village was fascinating, and I am continually awed as I see these structures and contemplate just how old they are- especially coming from a country where 200- 300 years of age would be called “old”. When going through an old structure- or even just seeing the outside of it, as on your walks- I always feel a sense of quiet wonder….as if it is a great privilege to be there and see these things (and it really is). I like to think about the people who occupied these homes, ran these businesses, worshipped at these churches, etc., and think of what life was like for them. This was a great village to tour, and I am glad that you shared this with your viewers. You do your country honor with the wonderful videos that you present of England’s beauties!

Hi, Janet. Hope you are both OK. Thank you ever so much for your lovely heartwarming comment. I thought the flower was a rose too, I was saying to myself as I approached it...roses at this time of year, can't be! Can't wait to see roses again on our walks! When we visit locations with a strong historical presence, can't help but wonder what life was like for folk back then. Imagine showing them some of today's technology! These places certainly feed the imagination. Enjoy the rest of your day, Janet. Thanks again. ~ OAAW

@@OutandaboutWalking Oh, so those “mock roses” fooled you, too! : ) Well, they were pretty, even if they were not the real deal. Yes, our ancestors would have their minds boggled by modern technology- such as this channel, for example, where someone can share nice videos that go all over the world and then converse in a comment section with unknown people who have enjoyed them! I do historical reenacting and besides fife/drum performances, I have also had the opportunity to help with doing some demonstrations of historical cooking, 1700s style- as in cooking food in iron kettles over a fire while trying to make sure my long dress and apron didn’t ignite. No stove or microwave, no handy kitchen gadgets, no sink with running water from a tap. (We hauled water in bins from the nearby bathroom, though ancestors would have gone to a well or a creek). It gave me a huge appreciation for the conveniences in my kitchen at home. (However, the food does taste extra good when cooked that way! : ).

@OutandaboutWalking 2 ай бұрын
@@michaeltichael I do use the P3. So far I have encountered two problems with it…1). The lens occasionally fogs up, usually after it has got wet during a rain walk, so which really is my own fault as they do state in the manual that the camera is not waterproof. 2). The gimbal locked up sometime ago when powering the camera up, it said on the screen to tap the screen to reset but nothing was happening, it had totally crashed! I ended up having to leave the camera switched on to let the battery completely drain to reset the camera. It has been fine since. Would I recommend this camera? Absolutely! I couldn’t ever go back to the P2 after using the P3, it is a beast in low light, does proper HDR (although I tend not to use HDR on morning walks) as well as other benefits. @@OutandaboutWalking Haha, it was pink on Sunday? Then maybe i need to get my eyes checked! It looks white to me in the video. 🧐 Oh dear... Yes i did put the link in the browser, but once on the site, it won`t let me watch the video. By the way, I wonder how many 'Rose Cottages' there are in the UK. It seems to be a popular name for a cottage. I did a lot of research, deciding which village would be ideal for my book, that`s why I feel i know Stanton quite well. I even see it in my dreams! Generally, I just love the villages and their history, the architecture and character. It`s unique in the world, absolutely gorgeous but unfortunately i don`t live there. I`m in The Netherlands.

@Eva.Karinae ha, I see 👀🤣. I wonder if videos on the ITV website are set so that only they can be viewed from the UK. Netherlands are beautiful, been many there many times, loved Vondelpark especially 😍. Cotswolds sure are inspirational, perfect for getting the creativity flowing.

@@OutandaboutWalking It`s possible ITV is like the BBC Iplayer that is also only available within the UK.

@Eva.Karinae I think that could well be the case sadly. It is such a shame as I was inspired to do this walk because of the interview with the owner of Rose Cottage.

I looked up that Castle Coffee House and they have really good reviews but when you go past them as you film, they seem to be closed down or something....are they still in business? In the pics., they show the breakfasts and pastries that they offer and I caught site of the biggest jelly donuts ever! I would go to Dunster just to eat there and of course, because of the beautifully filmed video by the you.

A new subscriber to your channel! Thank you for posting this wonderful, peaceful, and relaxing video. I would like to know at what time of day this was recorded? I'm guessing it was quite early in the morning due to the lack of people and traffic.

Hi, Trevor. Welcome aboard! It is nice to know that you enjoyed this walk. If I recall correctly I think it was around 7am as I seem to remember the toll of the church bell (I will check the video to see) Thanks for your kind support.

Hello. Thank you for your comment & support. Sorry to hear that the sky pans are disturbing for you. Often I use this technique when there is something I wish to hide...like parked cars or simply setting up for a reveal shot. Maybe when you see the image starting to drift upwards skip forward on the video player about 20 - 40 seconds. Hope that can help you (I reguarly suffer with Labrinthitis also by the way). Thanks again.
