The reason most muggles don't see magic happening around them is sometimes attributed to protective spells having been places on objects or places so that regular none magical folks can't see or notice them. For example, Hogwarts is a massive castle located in the highlands of Scotland. But when muggles come across it they only see old ancient empty castle ruins. If muggles find themselves getting too close to it then suddenly the muggles will start to think they have someplace important they have to go to that they previously forgotten about. In rare other cases when a muggle happens to witness magic by mistake, the local wizarding government called The Ministry of Magic will come and magically erase that particular memory from the muggle's mind. Certain cases are allowed only to a certain extent, like in the case of a wizard or witch having been born from a muggle family or is being raised by a muggle family like Harry and the Dursleys for example. But even then the wizarding child is not allowed to perform magic even in front of their muggle family even though their muggle family members know about their relative being born a witch or wizard and that they attend Hogwarts. The Wizarding communities consider it vital that their existence remain a secret for their protection incase for example muggles decide to bring back the witch trials and start burning wizards at the stake again among many other reasons as well. 🏰🪄

Nicholas Flamel is a real life, historical person. He was believed to be an alchemist during the Middle Ages who discovered the secret of the sorcerer's stone as he became very rich almost overnight. His house in Paris still stands and has been turned into a restaurant. They even have a Harry Potter menu for children. I had lunch there during my last trip to Paris several years ago.

@@justUzzy Many elements of this world are borrowed from medieval legends and myths. The three headed dog is inspired by Cerberus for example. You hear names of ancient wizards and witches such as Ptolemy, Agrippa, Merlin, those are too either real historical figures or legends. In the next movie you'll encounter a plant called Mandrake or Mandragora. That's a real plant , Atropa mandragora(if you ever got those eye drops at the doctor that diluted your pupil, that's atropine, an extract of that very same plant) but there's a huge medieval legend around it. But goblins, centaurs, merpeople, hags, ghouls, vampires and many other creatures are also borrowed from myths.
@chris...9497
@chris...9497 Ай бұрын
@@ercsey-ravaszferenc6747 Atropine is extracted from members of the nightshade family, of which mandrake is a member, but atropine used to dilate your pupils at the eye doctors is extracted from belladonna, not mandrake. Belladonna is a plant that is named for its use in Italy in times past, specifically to enhance the attractiveness of women by dilating the pupil to make women seem more passionate or more interested in the men around them. 'Belladonna' is Italian for 'beautiful woman'. Note that one of the first questions Snape puts to Harry is what the difference is between Monkshood and wolfbane. (And there's me, unprepared, but ready to answer 'None; they are the same thing.')

However, atropine can be found in a number of species from the same family and historically (as described by Theophrastus in antiquity, mandrake was used for such purposes. In reality, Flamel was a scribe and printer, his wealth having come by way of his wife Perenelle. The two of them used much of their wealth in philanthropy and it wasn’t until after Flamel’s death that the legend of him being an alchemist started, baseless.

The original UK published book is called Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. A philosopher is what people in medieval times called an alchemist or sorcerer. But when the book was about to be published in America, the publishers didn't think that American children would understand what a philosopher is according to medieval terms. The Philosopher's Stone is an actual medieval legend like King Arthur and Merlin is. When the first Harry Potter movie was being filmed, they made all the actors who had to speak the name of the stone film the scenes twice, saying both the American and UK version of the name. In the American version of the movie, the actors call it the Sorcerer's Stone, but in the United Kingdom version, the actors call it the Philosopher's Stone. This movie series is right now in the process of being rebooted for TV and is presently in preproduction. Each season of the TV show will be a Harry Potter book. It was decided that the first season will be called the Philosopher's Stone. 📖🏰🪄🎬🗣🎥🎞📽🖥💻📲 BTW, many of the scenes in the Harry Potter movies were filmed at several didn't colleges throughout the UK. But if you like, there are several Harry Potter themed parks in at least 3 different countries. In America, it is Universal Studios Wizarding World of Harry Potter in both Orlando, Florida and California. They built Hogwarts and the neighboring town called Hogsmeade according to the movie and books. In another section of Universal Studios, there is Diagon Alley. You can also take the Hogwarts Express to and from Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. They are now in the process of building a third Harry Potter location at Universal Studios. In England, it's Levinston Studio, where you can take a tour of the actual real Harry Potter sets. Japan just recently opened a Harry Potter museum full of replicas and actual original props from the Harry Potter movies. They also built full sets and extremely fun activities one can do, like riding a broom or making yourself into a Hogwarts portrait that everyone can see hanging on the wall during your visit to the place. 🌎🏰🪄🎡🎢👍

Actually (pardon me while I channel my Hermione spirit), centuries ago 'science' was known as Natural Philosophy' (the philosophy of Nature, aka the knowledge of the natural or physical world). The root of this subject was established in ancient Greece and originated with the ancient Greek philosophers, like Aristotle, Plato, Archimedes, Pythagoras, and so on. Natural Philosophy was a broad collective subject that included Mathematics, Alchemy (chemistry), Astrology (astronomy), Herbology (botany), medicine, and zoology, which were considered integrated disciplines under the umbrella term 'Natural Philosophy'. Come the Midde Ages and the Crusades opened the return of knowledge banned in preceding centuries by the Church (the Church considered this information as 'spiritually-suspect', as it was originated by 'pagans'). During those Dark Ages, knowledge developed by the ancient Greeks were held and improved upon by the Moors (Muslims) before sharing it with Crusaders, who recognized the value and brought it back to Western Europe, sparking the Renaissance (rebirth). Note: You still see the hand of the Moors on Natural Philosophy through Arabic prefixes of some of the words: al-chemy, el-ixir, al-gebra, al-embic. Centers of learning, called 'colleges' and 'universities' were founded, with reluctant Church support. Because knowledge is such a dangerous thing, only priests were allowed this learning. The trappings and ceremonies common to the Church remain in academia to this day: gothic-design buildings, Latin and Greek as the languages of learning, ceremonial robes, graduation rituals (ceremonies), the bestowing of degrees to mark levels of knowledge. And you see this in the formalities at Hogwarts. Just look to the story of Dr Faust, written in the 1500s, to see what Natural Philosophy once was. Alchemy was the peak of applied knowledge, requiring all the disciplines covered by Natural Philosophy, so required a doctorate to be knowledgeable enough to make the attempt. The goal of Alchemy was the creation of the Philosopher's Stone. It was described as red in color, both liquid and solid, and of such purity that it had several 'magical' properties: -Able to transform base metal (generally understood as lead) into purest gold -Able to heal all diseases, aka universal cure-all (panacea) -Able to extend life indefinitely (the elixir of life) The Philosopher's Stone was a theoretical concept which many sincere educated men attempted to produce but failed. In the process, the chemicals (which included arsenic, cadmium, lead, and sulfur) affected their health in terrible ways. And many conmen traveled Europe defrauding the rich and royalty in isolated areas before escaping with payment or supplies (except when found out and punished). Philosophers were not 'sorcerers' (sorcerers were heretical according to the Church and risked being condemned to death); they were the most-educated men of their time. The comment about how American children wouldn't know what a 'philosopher's stone' was is true; and most American adults wouldn't know either. So, when you see the gothic features of Hogwarts Castle, the use of Latin in spellcasting, and the wearing of robes to classes, there is a direct line from this back to actual history. Last note: 'Borrowed from' is inexact and incorrect; these things are more accurately 'drawn from' history. Just sayin'...

Thank you for that! One of the things most people sadly overlook is the character names. If you research these, it becomes clear that JK Rowling put a great deal of effort into naming the characters in meaningful ways that give clues to what they are about. Some Examples: -Minerva McGonagall: 'Minerva' is the Roman equivalent of Greek Athena, who sprang fully mature from the cranium of Zeus/Jupiter, King of the Gods. Minerva is athletic, concerned with justice, is a goddess of war undertaken to right wrongs (therefore 'justice' or 'just cause'), is intellectual (therefore strategic), and a master of all the civilized and civilizing skills (animal husbandry, spinning, commerce, business, etc) She is also a virgin goddess. McGonagall is unmarried, childless, completely fair, stable in her emotions, and loves education and educating. In her youth, she was quite athletic, winning awards on the Quidditch pitch (her award sits next to James Potter's). -Argus Filch: in Greek mythology, Hera was married to Zeus and Zeus was a philanderer. Hera set Argus to keep watch on Zeus, so Zeus would be forced to stay faithful. Argus had a hundred eyes, half of which were always awake and watching. When Argus was killed, Hera placed Argus's eyes into the tail of her signature bird, the peacock, which has aways been used as a 'watchdog' for their tendency to make a racket when strangers or commotion is about. Filch keeps his eye on the students, catching them when they are out of bed or in places they shouldn't be. Mrs Norris, his cat, helps him. -Hermione: Her name is the feminine form of Hermes, the Greek (and androgenous) messenger god of Olympus. Hermes is similar to Egyptian Thoth, the gods' scribe (therefore the magic of communication, writing, documentation, and books). Hermes is the patron god of magic, lawyers, thieves, and polarities. Two ears, two eyes, two hands, two feet, two lungs; Hermes works with the dance and music of polarities and their balance. Hermione loves her books, is most talented with spells and magic, is often the character that explains new terms and concepts, and is concerned with following the rules. -Quirinus Quirrell: 'Quirrell' is a kind of pun on 'squirrelly', I think. But more interestingly, the name 'Quirinus' is an ancient name for Janus, the Roman god of the calendar year, from which we get the month 'January'. Janus/Quirinus had two faces, one to look back at the past and the other to look ahead at the future. -Lily and Petunia, the sisters who are Harry's mother and aunt: Using Victorian Flower Language (a real thing), 'Lily' means 'pure/loving', while 'Petunia' means 'angry/resentful'. These meanings describe the sisters very well. As we go further in the series, other names will make this point more emphatically.

Welcome to the incrediblely wonderful rabbit hole of a ride called the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Enjoy it well. 😊 This is the song that the Sorting Hat sings in the book version of Sorcerer's Stone/Philosopher's Stone before he sorted the first year's students into their houses; "Oh you may not think I'm pretty, But don't judge on what you see, I'll eat myself if you can find A smarter hat than me. You can keep your bowlers black, Your top hats sleek and tall, For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat And I can cap them all. There's nothing hidden in your head The Sorting Hat can't see, So try me on and I will tell you Where you ought to be. You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve, and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart; You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuffs are true And unafraid of toil; Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, if you've a ready mind, Where those of wit and learning, Will always find their kind; Or perhaps in Slytherin You'll make your real friends, Those cunning folks use any means To achieve their ends. So put me on! Don't be afraid! And don't get in a flap! You're in safe hands (though I have none) For I'm a Thinking Cap!" 🧙‍♂️🧙‍♀️🪄✨⚡🖤 BTW, I was sorted into Gryffindor and my brother was sorted into Slytherin in the Pottermore (now called Wizarding World) official website. The website was created by the Sony company and the author of the Harry Potter books, JK Rowling. I had to take a fun and special personality test to find out what house I am in. To answer the question about the name off the book/movie is it depends on the country. The originally name published by Bloomsbury in the UK was Philosopher Stone. However US Publisher Scholastic Inc didn’t think Americans would understand that so they switched it to Sorcerer stone. Movies did the same thing when they came out later.

There are very solid reasons for some of the things you question: -Why is Harry better off living outside the Wizarding World -Why does Harry have to live with these terrible people and not other folks -Why are people uncomfortable speaking Voldemort's name -How did Harry survive Voldemort's deadly curse -What does Snape have against Harry All will be revealed in time; well, mostly (the films leave out important bits, but the fans will give you those bits when the time is right. Spoilers ruin the experience, so be patient.) All will be made known. Here's some bits of innocuous information: The reason Hagrid is so big is that he's half-wizard and half-giant. Hagrid's mother was a giant; average size of the race is about 20ft tall. Hagrid's father was a wizard, but of unusually short stature, which explains why Hagrid is only 8ft tall when most half-giants average 10ft. Trolls are related to giants, and you see how dim-witted trolls are; giants aren't a great deal smarter. Hagrid has some intellectual 'deficits' due to being half-giant, but is functional intellectually (even if his spelling falters) because of his father's intelligence. So, if Hagrid doesn't recognize the danger to others of the magical beasts he loves and is attracted to, or if Hagrid has difficulty keeping others' secrets (he's good at keeping his own), chalk that up to the mildly fuzzy-headedness of being half-giant. Oh; people go round and round about what criteria is applied to determine which House one is sorted into. I don't think it ruins anything to state now that each House is founded on specific core values. It's not habits, it's not talents or abilities, it's not even ethics or morals; it's core guiding values. You can google what these are or you can take the official Sorting test at WizardingWorld.com to find out what your House would be. And I think the staircases change as a protective measure against Hogwarts being attacked. Hard for an enemy to pursue you when the staircase disconnects from where your target fled. It also forces the students to keep on their toes and think ahead. And Hermione knows things because she has a voracious curiosity and reads A LOT. Also, Hermione takes great pride in knowing things. Everyone has certain innate talents; for instance: -Hermione knows spells -Harry is great at flying -Seamus blows up things -Snape is a genius with potions and so on. Hogwarts is supported by the Ministry of Magic. Students receive meals, lodging, laundry, instruction, and general supplies for free. Private-use supplies (robes, wand, cauldron, books, etc) are the responsibility of the child and his/her family to purchase. Admission is granted upon the child's first spontaneous expression of magic power; if it does not manifest by age ten, it never will. There is a mechanism inside a room in Hogwarts that senses first magical activity, whereupon the individual's name is registered, and the Ministry of Magic is notified. The ministry then enacts 'the Trace', which monitors any magic occurring in the child's presence. This is done for the safety of the Wizarding World, to keep the community hidden and secret. Children are forbidden to work magic outside of Hogwarts until they reach adulthood at age 17, their final year at Hogwarts. The moment they turn 17, the Trace disappears and they are now free but accountable to work any magic anywhere that is not dangerous to the Wizarding World. On the first day of each term, each class has the same age in years, even if any child has a birthday the day of or the day after the first day of term. So, on the first day for First-Years they are 11 years old; the Second-Years begin at age 12, and so on until the Seventh-Years who are 17 and legal adults. Technically, all Seventh-Years have the choice to quit school, but they usually complete their schooling. Meals at Hogwarts are prepared by house elves the floor below the Dining Hall. When time for the meal to begin, the elves send them all at once to the tables with their magic. And, yes; most students spend Christmas break at home with their families and all return home between terms. It's a boarding school, not an orphanage. Many people, especially those new to the franchise, remark about how dangerous the environment at Hogwarts is for children. Not to be concerned. Wizards/witches are a very strong breed. Their health is not as fragile as the health of muggles, sharing very few (if any) pathogens or illnesses. Wizard/witch bodies are more resilient than muggles', handling trauma better and healing faster and without scarring. That said, injuries that arise from magical cause are frequently permanent and do leave scars. If you see physical damage on a wizard or witch, it was caused by magic. You see this in Harry's scar. So, when Neville falls and breaks his wrist, it's no big deal; it'll heal quickly and properly. Considering how tough wizard/witch physical bodies are, most in the Wizarding World take pride and glee in taking on physically-challenging or even dangerous activities, interests, and employment. This is taken as both normal and exciting. There are magical cats called 'kneazles' (google it), but Filch's cat is a normal cat with unusual red eyes. The cat is named Mrs Norris, after a character in an 1800s Jane Austin novel. Filch is quite devoted to his cat and it assists Filch in locating students in places where they have no legitimate reason to be. Note: Argus Filch is a 'squib'. The term identifies a person of magical ancestry who has no magic power. They are treated by the Wizarding World as a handicapped individual and usually provided employment for which no magic is necessary. Filch is the custodian of Hogwarts and takes his job very seriously. Squibs have a specific affinity for cats and kneazles, who in turn feel that same affinity for their squibs.

One thing J.K. Rowling said in an interview when she was writing this was that the magic is fake but the wizards are still people at the end of the day who deal with a lot of the same issues like we all deal with as people in the real world. First two are definitely more kiddish movies but still fun & def help establish a base understanding of what’s possible in this world & it gets deeper on an analogy level & the character development is INSANE. I don’t think the cat can see him. However the cloak doesn’t block smell or sound. The cat definitely can smell/hear him

The movie doesn' t really explain why the Sorting Hat said " another Weasley". Ron has 5 older brothers. 2 (Bill & Charlie) have already graduated but Percy and the twins, Fred & George, are all still in Hogwarts. All of the Weasleys were or are Gryffindors. The cat couldn't see Harry under the invisibility cloak but she could smell him.

The movie doesn't have to... you see like 4 or 5 kids already(ron, the twins, percy I think & Ginny) add in Mrs Weasley & it's basically spelled out for you
@toodlescae

@@Diablo22967 technically the movie never says that Ron's parents were Gryffindor because they cut that line from the book out.

Actually, your point about "growing up with someone awful to be able to appreciate magic" is quite interesting, but not quite right. It's more about money than magic, and there are four main examples of this problem. Harry knows what it's like to have nothing of your own (even his clothes are old Dudley's ones), but when he learns he's rich, he doesn't waste it, because he realizes he wants friends more than money. So he is glad to treat his friends with sweets or pay for them and never boasts about his money. Ron's family is a poor one (only dad works, and there are seven people living at one house; two older brothers live separately), so he has everything worn. But his family is very friendly and welcoming, and when they win a huge sum of money, they not only buy new things, but go on a trip to get new impressions. Hermione is shown to be from an average-income family, and her parents taught her well to manage her money: she mainly buys books and gifts for her friends, but she's not greedy at all. Draco is a rich heir, just like Harry, but his parents taught him that money is a sign of status, so he thinks he's superior (bah!) because he always gets the best that can be bought. So much for the cool kid. Ravenclaw here, by the way

The biggest thing about Harry Potter when the books first started to come out is it got boys to read. Philosopher's Stone in the U.K. and Sorcerer's Stone in the USA is the way it was published.

Welcome to the journey, I hope you'll enjoy it! Fair warning though: its gonna get really dark. This first one is just your introduction to this world through the eyes of Harry, and as the main characters are 11, the tone of this one is correspondingly light and child-like. But it will mature and become extremely serious as they grow older. And then just a few explanations: 1. Dumbledore is an old English word for bumblebee 2. Dumbledore mentioned that Harry's mother sacrificed herself trying to protect her son. By doing so she provided Harry with a very powerful protection against Voldemort. That came into effect when Quirrel - sharing his body with Voldemort - attacked him, that's why Harry's touch burned him. 3. I'm pretty confident that I'm not spoiling anything by saying that his mother's sacrifice is also the reason why he has to stay at the Dursley's. Petunia being his mother's sister, has her blood and the protection lives in that blood. While Harry can call "home" the house where his mother's blood lives, he is protected there from Voldemort. He only needs to return there once a year though. 4. Generally speaking whenever you have glaring questions, things seem to lack an obvious explanation, assume that there is a very good reason for that, because there is always one. J. K. Rowling came up with a brilliant and incredibly complex story and plot and everything is connected at a very deep level from this part to the last one. It may well be that some of your questions will be answered four movies later, but they will be. 5. The movies don't really make it clear but there's a lot more to magic than just spells, abilities and a wand. The wizard's or witches character, intentions and focus matters a lot. This will be very important later on. Also, not everything is possible in magic. There are rules and laws to it, some things are not possible. Think of it as an alternative physics. For instance you cannot magic food out of nothing, and no spell can reawaken the dead. Oh, and no, you wouldn't want to be at that start-of-term feast. They filmed it for days, all that food had to stay on the table in the sweltering heat, it all went bad, the stench was horrible...
