Investing in a standalone that has short AND long term fuel trim was the best decision I made when re-wiring my 7M. With just a 2jz base map for the rough ignition table the ECU tuned the entire fuel table by itself and saved me big dollars on the dyno. Having a new loom is a big plus too as the old wiring is crusty as hell due to age and also limits you to stock perhipherals. This thing is looking to be a nice 7M! I do love the old M series, they seem to have a lot more character than the 1JZ that came in the later models. I have owned my 1988 Turbo A for over 6 years now and it was stock except for a turbo back exhaust. I have modified it over the years and its nearly done except I need to fit my cams and valvetrain upgrades. Starting from a bone stock chassis it has been great to feel the improvement after doing the coilovers, poly bushings/mounts, ECU, piping and brakes. I picked it up for AUD13.5k in 2016 which was top of the market given the rarity of the model and the fact it wasn't missing any parts. Nowadays mint examples are going for $60K its just crazy! I am glad I got one while I could afford it, prices were on the rise even back then. I look forward to seeing what you do with this mate

Thanks for reaching out man! Yeah I cannot believe how much some of these cars are going for. I was contemplating selling the car and I'm glad I decided to just hang onto it. Ive seen some 1989s going for upwards of 50-60k and in terrible condition. With my dad being the original owner it should have stayed in better condition but unfortunately with time and actually driving the car, things wear out and just get old. Oh the standalone has already been worth the money. I will do a whole video of when I send it out to get tuned (hopefully soon). I won't be even be close to utilizing all the features the ecumasters has to offer. I first purchased the DIY auto standalone and it was a waste of money and time. I was surprised at how easy it has been getting all the sensors and stuff wired in with this ecumaster. I'd love to see some pics of your car. follow me on my new instagram account supraluver and message me some pics. I just started to post pictures of mine and will also use that to document my build process. thanks again for reaching out man! best of luck on your build. Hit me up if you run into any issues.

Hey! I bought a 7MGE '89 Supra a few years ago as a senior in high school. I didn't realize at the time what a complicated and unsupported car/engine I had bought, and its been giving me constant issues (300k miles, flood car, etc). I had never done an oil change on a car, yet decided to get it anyway because it was only $1,500. What you have is pretty close to my dream build. I want to keep the 7M, turbo it, etc. But so far, I've done nothing but strip out the interior and change the wheels. I just don't have a ton of time to work on it while in college Right now, it stalls on idle occasionally, the rear lamp failure box is faulty so my brake lights don't work, and the engine just feels very shaky, especially above 4-5k rpm. Do you have any recommendations for easy mods to make it run better, or to fix these problems? I'm excited to be a part of such a small community, I look forward to having a nice build at some point. Definitely subscribed, I want to see more of your Supra in the future.

Dude thanks for sharing your story man! Unfortunately as you have experienced, these cars are getting harder to find and Unfortunately most of them are in horrible condition and have been left outside to rot away. I'm glad to hear you are working on getting it back to the condition it should be in! As for the rough idling issue, I'd start with the simple stuff. Check the spark plugs, distributor, spark plu wires, boots...etc. check the spark plug galley and see if the valve covers have leaked oil into the spark plug holes. Check the distributor cap for cracks, look at the rotor and see if the contacts are worn out (easy to replace). When I had a misfiring issue similar to yours, my valves were burned up and causing similar rpm issues. Hopefully yours is something simple like I listed. Check those little things first and hit me up if its still having issues. I've been stoked hearing from all these other guys about their Supras and the progress they have made with them. It's a pretty awesome community and everyone is so willing to help out. I appreciate your feedback and I will continue to post videos. Thanks again man!

I live in Utah too. In the Layton area. I have had 240sx, FC RX7, and wanted to get into the 85-88 280sx. I definitely want to stay in the 80’s though. I wanted something different then what everyone else is doing. Then I remember seeing an old abandoned turbocharged 88 celica supra and haven’t seen anyone really get into one. So I started to do some research and landed on your video. Your car is damn good looking and just inspired me even more to go ahead and pull the trigger on one. So thank you for that. Considering this video is 9 months ago, did you ever install your ecu into the stock wiring harness? Which ecu did you use and what were some changes you made to the stock harness? Personally Im gonna have to find an aem or pro efi ecu since tuners around here use that, but I need an idea of what changes Im looking at before I do my own na-t project. I love the build by the way the FFIM really modernizes the engine bays of these cars.
@mainstreambuilds

Yeah I've been slacking on the uploads and haven't given a recent update on this. I decided to bag the megasquirt and went with the ecumaster EMU classic. I finished wiring all the inputs and ran into an issue with the ignition signal. I got the adapter harness from ecumaster and I guess the wiring isn't correct so I've been needing to figure that out. So far it's been super easy to work with and I would recommend it. Another guy I know is running 500hp on his 7m with the ecumaster. I will try to do an update video on this soon.

Since I ended up going with forged internals, it wasn't necessary to add oil squirters. I was actually talking to a guy the other day about overall costs. I saved a bunch of money by doing all the fab stuff myself, but I'd say overall, I'm probably 8-10k.

@@mainstreambuilds I was hoping you had a different bracket because I bought a set of Corbeau RRX’s not too long ago with the Corbeau sliders and brackets but it made me sit too high. Even without the sliders I didn’t sit right. I was going to buy another set of seat brackets from a different manufacturer but after looking at it, there can’t be much of a difference with another brand either. I’m guessing the seats possibly play a role in seating position as well. It would be nice to see how yours is mounted though. 👍

@@shuexiong2620 I have the fx1s and I had the same issue. They would sit way too high. The non-sliding brackets are a lot lower but they are fixed and won't move. We tig welded the manifold using weld els from treadstoneperformance.com it's a T3 manifold so I'm sure I'm a little limited on power, but it gets the job done. Its fitted with a 38mm wastegate, but that will be upgraded eventually.

Hey I was curious if you had any issues running the pnp adapter for the ecumasters standalone. I know the GE and GTE harnesses have a slightly different pinout, and they don't have a GE adapter. It's really the only thing that's kept me from buying it. I have GTE harnesses but they're hacked and my GE is mint so I'd prefer not to change it if I don't have to.
@mainstreambuilds
@mainstreambuilds 2 жыл бұрын
So I havent had to repin anything on my actual harness. All the cutting and splicing is done on the pnp adapter and ecumasters has done a great job with showing you how to add sensors and how to test everything on the ecumasters tuning software. If you do need to move the jumper wires, ecumasters provides great documentation on how to do it. I made sure to get the pnp for the ge (yellow connector not the grey) I haven't gotten it tuned yet but so far everything seems to be working properly through the tuning software. I've added intake air sensor, Mac valve for boost control, marlin crawler transmission speed sensor (for launch control), wired in a wide band 02 sensor, and a fuel pressure sensor. I should be getting it tuned very soon and I can give you guys some feedback.

I will do a video on my ecumasters setup. Hopefully that will give everyone a better idea. I'd definitely recommend it. Great unit for a decent price. I'm no genius when it comes to electronics and I was able to figure this out. Ecumasters has uploaded a ton of very well done videos on KZfaq which give step by step instructions.

@@mainstreambuilds Ok thanks for the info. It definitely seems like the best route short of building a custom harness for any other standalone. I’m also tempted to keep my distributor and coil like you have, just curious what the power limits will be before the coil will need to be upgraded. Make sure to post videos whenever you get it tuned too!
@mainstreambuilds
@mainstreambuilds 2 жыл бұрын
@@_Bonez12 yeah you shouldn't need to cut anything besides the pnp. I was in the same boat as you. I even bought a separate used harness just in case but didn't end up using it. The guy tuning my car said the distributor will definitely limit the HP but it should get me around the 500hp mark I'm looking for. I will definitely keep you posted. Worse comes to worse I will drop some coin and get a trigger wheel and do a coil over plug setup.

@mainstreambuilds
@mainstreambuilds 7 ай бұрын
It really comes down to how much you are willing to spend. A built 7mgte would obviously be better than a stock 7mge. If you are going to turbo the GE I would start out with building a decent foundation. Headgasket will most likely be your main issue. The factory headgaskets and head bolts aren't sufficient enough for boost. I'd look at maybe getting block and head resurfaced and run a metal headgasket with arp studs. Unfortunately I learned the hard way and kept fixing little bits here and there when I should have just pulled the motor out and installed a metal headgasket, studs, forged rods and pistons, and a shimmed oil pump.
@mainstreambuilds
@mainstreambuilds 7 ай бұрын
It can definitely be done, it just needs a little work 320 isn't insane, but it is roughly 100hp more than factory. Doesn't seem like a lot but it can take some work to get there. I hope you do it! I love hearing people experimenting with the 7M and making it what it should be! Keep me posted.

my dad is finally giving me his stock 7mgte mk3. it was a junkyard supra from what he told me and brought it back to some life. still not in its best state and has lots of issues. when braking it stutters and doesnt brake all the way, just kinda goes in and out until it fully stops. another issue is when turning the steering wheel clockwise it starts to make a rattling noise in the front left wheel. I have lots of plans for it but i atleast want to make it drivable as of now. Im pretty clueless when it comes to working on a car but im determined to fix this beauty. what should i start with ?
@mainstreambuilds
@mainstreambuilds 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing man! That's awesome! So to me it sounds like some new brake rotors might be needed. I'd also check the brake master cylinder and even the slave cylinder. It may have a small leak in the brake system from it sitting. I'd bleed the system and see if that fixes your issues. As for the rattling that could be a wheel bearing which isn't too difficult to replace. I personally would get that stuff sorted out before throwing performance stuff at it. If you have the money and time I'd start with a metal head gasket and ARP head studs. The engine will require some machining so the gasket completely seals. The head and block will need to be resurfaced in order for this to work. This process will be a good base to start with. The 7MGTE/GE are notorious for blowing headgaskets and can cause some major damage when they fail. You could also do some simple things such as replacing the mass air flow sensor with the Lexus mass air flow sensor, do the is300 coil pack conversion, and going with slightly larger fuel injectors. The CT26 turbo is great but very limited when it comes to increasing boost. You could get the CT26 that has been modified to flow a little more air. You could also do an exhaust with a larger downpipe and even a slightly larger intercooler. These cars have a lot of potential the hardest part is figuring out where to start. Hope this helps steer you in the right direction.

@mainstreambuilds
@mainstreambuilds Жыл бұрын
I will be doing another video soon on how to turbo the 7m. Hopefully I can crank that out soon. As for the timing belt issue, if there is no internal damage from the belt breaking and pistons hitting valves. If all is good you could reset timing and throw in another timing belt. I would pull the spark plugs and crank the engine over by hand and see if it seizes or locks up during the rotation. The last thing you want is a catastrophic failure.

Everyone kinda has their own opinions when it comes to this topic. A lot of people will say the 1jz is far more reliable. I've driven my supra from Utah to Nevada several times and the only issue I had was my AC compressor went out. Other than that the car ran flawlessly. I've also seen a 1jz supra over heat and stop running. It had to be towed to the next town. In my opinion both motors are great. I'd for sure have the 7m block decked and head resurfaced and throw in a metal headgasket with ARP studs. I had this done many years ago and drove the supra as a daily for a while with no issues. Whenever I get asked this question I usually respond with "what is your goal for the car?". Depending on what you want to do with the car you may need some deep pockets. I put quite a bit of money in my car but I enjoy it and drive the s*** out of it.
