Is it a ditch or an open road? I finally tackle one of Neil Young’s most prolific creative periods: the mid 1970s. In this passionate and in depth video, I discuss all of Young’s recording output from 1973 to 1976, including Time Fades Away, Tuscaloosa, Tonight’s the Night (both the original and ’75 version), Roxy: Tonight’s the Night Live, On the Beach, Homegrown, Zuma, Hitchhiker, Chrome Dreams and Neil Young Archives Volume II: 1972-1976. I also discuss Danny Whitten and the different lineups of Crazy Horse during this period as well as what was happening in Neil’s personal life and how it inspired his songwriting. I also challenge the notion of a “Ditch Trilogy” and question if it’s still a relevant term for music critics and Neil Young fans…!!
And here's the info and link to my friend Sam's internet radio show:

Time Fades Away is an awesome testament to his raw, grunge nature.

#ditchtheditch indeed!! Outstanding video, one of your very best! Christ almighty, so much to say...first Neil actually knew pre-rampage Charlie, tried to get him signed to Reprise(!), and gave him a motorcycle. As Charlie said "Neil Young is the only person in the music business to ever give me anything". So, it only makes the song darker and more real. I had a friend who hunted down a copy of Time Fades Away in the late 90's on vinyl, and we made the pilgrimage out to buy it. I also had a "needle drop" bootleg of it on a CD bootleg. And I will never forget getting a copy of On The Beach which also took YEARS to find (I think it was the first of "the missing six" to get released). Both are absolute masterpieces, as you said. And side two of On The Beach is such an absolute stunner. And I love what you had to say about Zuma. Couldn't agree more about Danger Bird etc. Bar Stool Blues could possibly be my single favorite thing he ever recorded. Gets me every time. Also, great job contextualizing the Archives II in and around the officially released albums! And to bring it all the way around, you're so right about critics creating stuff that never existed, kind of the same way they were desperate for Dylan to have made a "trilogy" starting with Time Out Of Mind, or even the grand daddy of them all, The Berlin Trilogy, which only had one album made in completely in Berlin, and didn't become a term until the albums had been released for years hahahaha

Fantastic! I also always thought the "ditch"-line in the booklet of decade got way exaggarated by some Young-Fans and/or critics... I enjoy these albums, but my 2 favourites of his are from shortly after "Rust Never Sleeps" and the very un-ditchy "Comes A Time" (I prefer it a lot to to Harvest)

Thanks for watching and for weighing-in. I didn't say it in the video but Rust Never Sleeps is my favorite album outside of the era I was discussing (although, of course, it includes a few songs that were written and recorded in the mid 70s). Such an amazing album: another masterpiece!

Excellent video! I really enjoy hearing your thoughts on music. I would love to see a how to get into Neil Young video one day. I'm aware of the hits (I'm Canadian after all) but I've never delved deep into his discography. It's so large and daunting, a really impressive catalogue. This video makes me really want to. I'm particularly interested in On the Beach.

What about the underrated Reactor, Landing on Water, Trans, Greendale etc etc... The Godfather of Grunge 🤘 These facts I guess are the reason why I love NY ... I'm a Neil Young 'Youngster' born in the 80s. Would appreciate if you have a look on those very underated albums that are fabulous to me 😊🤘👍✌️

I dig Reactor and I love Greendale. My favorite post Rust Never Sleeps album is Broken Arrow actually (which I think is now sadly out-of-print). In the future I'd like to discuss all his albums from Freedom to Broken Arrow, which is a pretty great album run IMO.

It would have been easier to get Neil to jockey the video.
