My buddy has one with a stick, it’s a very rusty northern NY car with 400k miles. It’s exactly in the time frame of build to be affected. It burns 2 quarts between a 5k mile oil change, I’m impressed it doesn’t use more.

It isn’t bad, but it’s there and I have always hoped that the steering wouldn’t fail and cause a wreck. Glad to know it’s an easy fix and I can’t wait to see the fix. Previous Toyota engine builder at TMMK here. I was working there when we were building these 2AZ-FE engines and these are great engines with a few caveats. Firstly, anything before 2007 has head bolt issues that are very well known in older Camry's. Post 2007, Toyota updated these engines with the updated short blocks that fixed the head bolt issues but then they also introduced the low-tension piston rings that cause oil consumption which is what is mentioned in this video. However in mid-late 2010, these engines were updated again and had the updated pistons and piston rings installed from the factory. There weren't many cars left in the North American market that still used the 2AZ by then as the 2AR had succeeded it but the Canadian model Corolla XRS, the Matrix, and the Scion XB still used the 2.4. Therefore any 2011+ models of these cars shouldn't burn oil like the older cars did. The Corolla in this video shows that as those spark plugs don't show any signs of oil consumption. I'm interested to see what happens with the car in the video if the pistons and rings are changed in it regardless.

I brought my 2020 Camry SE to the dealer for warranty work, they updated a module for a dead battery I had. It was close to the 20,000 mile oil change so they changed the oil and did other maintenance. The 10,000 mile oil change they overfilled the oil so I told the service manager to tell whoever does the oil change to not over fill the oil. In fact I told her to tell them to put in 4 and a half quarts and if it was a little low I would add some. She later told me she had done so. Low and behold, when I got home I waited 20 minutes and checked the oil level and it was almost a half inch high above the full mark. I called the service manager in charge and he apologized and said he was going to personally check the calibrations on their oil dispenser. In the meantime I pulled the oil pan plug and let some oil out and it is just a smidgen above the full mark. I did not bring it back as it is a 190 round trip to the dealer. It pays to check your oil and do your own maintenance if you can.

Damn those cylinder walls are in amazing condition for the millage.

Best youtube channel!! 2009 Matrix w/ 2.4 2AZ-FE owner here. Purchased in 2019 w/ 150k miles, currently have 170k miles. Using synthetic 0w-20 w/ Toyota oil filter, replace every 5k miles per TCCN. I religiously check the oil level & top off as needed, I'm burning about 1/2 quart per 1k miles.

I have a 2009 Pontiac Vibe with a 2AZ-FE 2.4 l. Engine was rebuilt at 85K mi. Has 139K now. I am the 2nd owner. I run 0-20 SAE Full Synthetic, Mobil One or Penzoil Ultra Platinum. Burns max. 1/2 quart every 5K mi. Car runs Great! Very peppy! Had to replace AC Compressor only.

Every single 2AZ-FE that has come into my oil change place with over 100k miles has had no oil on the dipstick. I have seen only 1-2AZ-FE Camry with 60k miles come in with oil at the proper level on the dipstick. That car looked like a time capsule and was very well taken care of with its age.

My 2009 Camry had the pistons and rings replaced under warranty after meeting the requirements for the oil consumption test. Runs great! Also got my dash replaced under warranty because it was melting in spots. Plan on keeping this Camry for many years to come.

The Corolla XRS is a blast. My sister-in-law has a 2006 manual. I believe it has the 2ZZ in there though. Love to drive it when I get it over to change the oil. For Some reason it takes me all weekend to do an oil and filter change 😂😂😂😂

I owned a 2009 Matrix XRS with this engine ,89k on clock when purchased. . It Was a very practical, comfortable and FUN car to drive, Friends have 2005-2006 Camrys with this engine. I knew of it's reputation for NOT using oil, and oh boy with the 5 speed automatic a gem. Once on Highway 50 in Nevada I saw 125 on the speedo, and still had more to go. This was a Cold Rod if ever there was one! The XRS is THE Keeper: and at 71, last car I will ever need to buy... Then: I watch: "Toyotas to Avoid" ): and found out I was not the only one with the nagging oil consumption issue. RECALL on a TOYOTA ENGINE? The same engine my friends have that NEVER burn oil? WTF! Was I Butt Hurt? The CCN slam dunked my dream ride! No matter, I owned the Matrix for a total of 13 months, adding oil as I went, enjoying the MPG, versatility...Performance in mountain driving.....auto lust satisfied. So, come one fine Spring evening, the fuse box erupted in flames destroying the entire electrical system and my Matrix was a Total. Turns out this issue is "not uncommon", but not enough for a recall. Moral of Story: IF the oil consumption don't get ya the fuse box will. Lesson #2: I the CCN says, avoid a Toyota, Avoid it!

Music to my ears, I remember marking red and writing comments on my courtesy inspection sheet, my favorite victims were recently bought cars and used certified, I was chasing the oil consumption on every 2.4L, 2008 rav4 steering rack assembly play, Camrys tie rod play, sienna’s control arm bushings, leaking 08,09 Camry shocks. I’d never get over the fighting 13 years ago with the service manager and shop foreman, today I found this.

Once again, great informative video. How funny but my 13 highlander started making some humming noise. Looked at the tires and one had exactly what you were describing. Smooth going one way and bumpy the other way. I also thought I had a bad bearing or strut. got the car aligned too. Eventually I just replaced my tires. It took about 50k miles on the tire for that to happen. So not bad. Love your channel. Keep it up.

I thought undercoating really doesn't help save a cars frame from rusting out. Heard coating will get pided and actually hold moisture...

with winter coming up, may be a good video idea would be about warming up your car, I am firmly in the camp of giving it at least a good four or five minutes when it’s really cold and then driving gently but a lot of major media outlets say just get in and drive the only argument I have heard against it that makes sense is the car is running rich and injection more fuel so it's washing away the oil.

AMD thank you for the tip on the steering column.... My Buddy has a 2009 Scion xB that had that steering column noise that has been driving him crazy... he has replaced almost everything related to steering and the noise persists. I just shared the video with him.... This is definitely a tip worth worth a couple thousand dollars

I had this problem (09 Camry Le) with the 2.4L engine, and it burned oil, 3qts per 5k miles. It almost did it's own oil change 😁🚘...To slow down the oil burning I used a 5-30wt and this slowed the oil burning down some. It work a bit better.

My brother has an ‘07 Corolla XRS, 2ZZ engine. He hit like 320K before it gave out (high revving, redlining too much)

Thank you for yet another informative video. TCCN continues to restore my faith in hopes of honest mechanics. I have a 2009 XRS (my first new car) with ~ 166000 miles (U.S.) that has the oil burn issue. Regardless, it continues to be an ultra reliable and peppy car-I still love it. It will be passed on to a family member in early 2023.

So my 07 Camry with the 2AZFE must have the revised version, I've only got minimal oil consumption, don't even need to add any oil in between 7000km oil change intervals. 226k km. Great information, gonna check out that steering noise you showed.

I have two 09 Matrix with the 2AZ-FE. Both of them burn oil. One of the car is in the shop to get the steering issue mention in the video replaced. If only this video came out a little bit early hahaha

I have this very same engine in my 08 Scion xB…such a disappointment, if I run synthetic it’s burns a lot of oil. Now I run Dino 🦕 oil less consumption.

Had this in a Pontiac Vibe GT (the step brother to the Matrix), had the same issue with consuming oil. Wish I still had the car, but the level of oil consumption was extremely worrying. Quotes to get the work done sadly put it out of the realm of getting repaired....

My Avensis has that noise that i asked you few months ago. It was the whole steering column. Still driving like that, but i want to fix it, not to buy used one :) Also i found that if you turn three times the ignition key it will activate the electrical steering even when the car is not running.

10:15 I think it would be a good idea to periodically spray those CV joint boots and other rubber parts underneath with 303 Protectant .

I had a '98. first engine had a major breakdown at 200k miles, replaced it with another engine with low miles, same thing happened to that one. I wasn't about to put a third engine in.

Interesting video. Those Toyota big four cilinders never came on the European market, so we see mainly 1.4, 1.6 or 2.0 liter engines on those old corolla's overhere. These are, with normal maintenance being done, almost bulletproof and never burn oil.😉 Waiting for the next video on this car. 👍

When driving my Lexus CT200h on bad roads I have some ratling from the staring column. I'll give the loosening/tightening trick a chance.

Your video once again helps to find current issues with our Toyotas; at 11 minutes 48 seconds whe you say it's spending its life in Canada and you say that is normal to find superficial rust there, my 2005 Corolla is making a noise only whe starting to accelerate then stops, that sounds like dry metal soundind or clanging. The part shown at 11: 48 in this video you even point to, is where another donut shaped seal is located, called in Spanish " bajante"? I am trying to find the source of this annoying noise and I believe a parts advisor at the dealer said no matter I paid to a muffler shop to replace a similar part located nearly at the muffler pipe, like they indicated, in order to eliminate that noise which also occurs somtimes when hitting speed bumps. The.noise renains but the donut shaped seal located where you point at 11: 48 remains, as well as code P 0441, after replacing what Scotty Kilmer calls " all the (related) rubber " of an old 2005 Corolla owned since new in Dec. 2004. All EVAP hoses surrounding the EVAP service port, not the port, the M.A.F. Sensor, Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid Valve, PCV Valve hose, the cracked Canister for a new Toyota Canister, all parts are o.e.m. Toyota. The fuel cap was replaced twice with the o.e.m. Toyota. The car accelerates more smoothly nearly like new. My driving at UberEats has to be conservative to save fuel. Last 31 days was more than $362 in regular Top Tier 87 octane gasoline . The trusted independent mechanic who installed the canister didn't comment about dirty harness contact of the canister. But, a second trusted independent mechanic and his Son, found the code P0441 but their Autel Scanner was showing more informarion than my Xtool D8; it said the P0441 could also be fuel related and they directed me to hear a hissing sound coming from a hose which has the w oí rd fuel printed located to the left and behind the EVAP hoses id the EVAP service port of green color; the hose touches the right side of the valve cover I think. They identufied the hissing noise as coming from this hose which was found semi loose, they re tighted it and the noise disappeared but the code P0441 returned. I am thinking it might need to be replaced, the dealer said is $106. It is alo a rubber hose, an 18 years old rubber oem Toyota hose next Dec.23 2022. The check engine light shows another codes when the car is not running: P2419, P043E, P043F, and P2401, P2402 on my Xtool D8. Thanks.

Many years ago I had 2001 Corolla. Had to get rid of it at 175k miles because I had to add more oil than fuel:). Commuted with it to university over 70 miles daily.

2011 corolla here, my front brake shields left the chat back in 2018, still glad I got the 1.8 in mine. But doesn’t give me a warm fuzzy feeling to look at a used car with the 2.5 that’s not the a25a, sounds like that’s a super sensitive motor to maintenance that 95% of people don’t do

What about 2AZ-FE stripping headbolts / headstuds? This engine went into a few models besides the corolla.

I have a 2010 Toyota Yaris that is probably a Canadian model. I got it during cash for clunkers when our local dealer was short on cars. I had told my salesman that if he could get a 5 door Yaris with a manual tranny I would buy it! He remembered and gave me a call. That model is NOT available in the USA. When I got insurance they had a hard time with the VIN number. So I expected it was from Canada.

Hi, my wifes 2007 RAV4 has the 2AZ-FE engine and as i maintain it myself i know it uses no oil between changes. The difference might be that New Zealand cars were sourced from Japan so mechanicals were all made in Japan. Kevin.
