Just a word about the expensive fruit in Japan. This is the result of the Japanese farmers cooperative's marketing decisions post-WWII and their disproportionate power in the Diet. (I know, my mom worked at one!) They couldn't compete on quantity or price with other countries so they decided to up-market (along with import duties to force fruit from other countries to equate the price with domestically produced produce). 70 years later of competition to keep "plussing" the fruit in any way to raise or keep the prices up leaves us with these "perfect" fruit.... and high prices. Thanks for making this video and Happy Holidays to all of you!

As previously mentioned, the Japanese tradition of eating KFC on Christmas was due to a marketing campaign of somewhat nefarious origin initially by a single person. The manager of the first KFC restaurant in Japan confirmed in an NHK interview that eating fried chicken for Christmas was a common Western tradition- a total fabrication aimed at promoting the new business. Incredibly, the notion went viral (not easy back then), even becoming an official company marketing campaign. The manager has since admitted his lie, saying he regrets it even though it was hugely responsible for the success of the chain in Japan.

late comment but same deal with KFC in Australia. Its because fast food chains in the US are allowed to basically put anything (like a more unhealthy oil/grease, preservatives etc) into their products without much state/federal regulations. In Australia however, there are a ton of regulations for fast food places and so most of the really bad stuff is banned here and can't be used and the stuff that is used, such as chicken or beef, comes from a high quality farm.

It took me some time to realise that the chimney is actually a TV lol Here in Brazil we just eat a lot. And as a Brazilian from a Japanese family, we just mix the Brazilian with Japanese food. As my family is not that religious, we actually don't celebrate, but we get together and eat a lot. New year's resolution: live in Japan!

Merry Christmas to you all! Usually I spend Christmas Day with family, and that's what I'm doing this year, but due to the pandemic it's going to be limited to an hour or so, long enough to exchange presents and a small bite to eat. Otherwise I'm stuck by myself at home as I'm off work all week, so I walk during the day and listen to music/watch KZfaq videos at night. The holidays are actually pretty rough for me as I had some really bad things happen in past years around this time (nothing directly related to Xmas, more friendship/relationship based) so I get a huge reminder of that when they roll around. Pushing through this as best I can and preparing myself for 2021. I hope the coming year is better for everyone there, and that I can eventually return to visit Japan!

Thanks to Aki for driving the conversation, she was very patient. Bit taken aback by the lack of warmth in this video. When someone asks you to share a memory or experience with them, it is always a nice and polite gesture to ask that person what their own memory/experience is.

Christmas in Australia is pretty varied, after all, we're very multicultural. But for many Aussies traditional Christmas is a spending splurge on decadent seafood - prawns, oysters, crab and /or lobster. Lots do an American style turkey dinner, with roast veggies, gravy, cranberry sauce etc. Or roast pork with crackling. Or a glazed ham. Or a combination of all of the above, depending on how many people are attending lunch /dinner. Some people like to include the traditional English things in their dinner - pigs in a blanket, brussel sprouts, roasted carrots, etc. If it's really hot where you live, due to practicality, you generally dispense with hot food - so it's just salads, cold meats, prawns, nuts, chips, lollies, dips, shortbread, cheese platters, Christmas (dried fruit)cake, mince pies, etc. Dessert is usually something like the traditional English hot plum (dried fruit) pudding with custard, or pavlova with plenty of cream and fresh fruit (regardless, a 'pav' will usually turn up at some point across the holiday period). Grog generally features pretty heavily for most people - wine, cocktails, champagne, beer, and someone always has the job of buying all the bags of ice needed to keep the bevvies cold on Christmas eve 😆 For more divided families where you have to get together multiple times with different groups, a lush breakfast is becoming popular - with all the fixings... pancakes, eggs, bacon, syrup, sausages, toast, hash browns, tomatoes, beans, mushies, etc. But generally, it's just about over-eating whatever you consider to be posh or feasting food, lots of visiting ppl (not this year of course), cricket, beach swims if you're near a beach, beach cricket, the sound of cicadas, pedestal fans running, windows and front doors open for the breeze, carols, the 'kids' table, Christmas crackers and paper hats with bad jokes told across the table, (usually) sunshine, cold drinks, walks in the summer evening to see the Christmas lights on neighbours houses, and all the kids dressed in their new clothes they got from Santa 😊... and then there is Boxing Day which is more food, usually leftovers plus BBQ snags, chops, salads, etc, more drinking, more visiting, and more done with friends and extended families (perhaps not so much this year, of course). As Australia has a number of days off at this time, and it's summer holidays, the season is usually Christmas eve through to new years day celebrations - a week of festive food, family, friends, get togethers and indulgence. Merry Christmas Tokyo Creative! 🎅🏼🎄🎁

Greetings from Chicago, Illinois, US! So I found this channel by means of Abroad In Japan, and your videos are just an absolute joy to see. Thanks for brightening up a very strange year! I used to work for Denso so I’ve only been to Kariya and Toyoda in Aichi... but loved being in Japan... I miss it dearly. For 2021... due to where I worked, I picked up Nagoya-ben from my boss, which had some unique phrases... are local dialects in Japanese common? Nagoya-ben almost seemed as tho it was more of an older person thing... bit many young people seemed to know it iirc. I also heard there is a ramen museum... worth a visit? Peace be with all of you and please send my best to Chris and Natsuki-sama! ;) 🙏 OMG - and my daughter’s friends had told her that in Japan they have KFC for Christmas because the “FC” in “KFC” stands for “For Christmas” lol. That was a very easy rumor to dispel! 😂 Also just to share, it’s 16ºF (-9ºC) here tomorrow... no snow yet tho! A good day to stay indoors...

Ahhhhhh New Years is like Japan's Christmas! That makes a lot of sense! I'm learning all the Italian traditions now as my KZfaq channel is doing what you guys do but for a Brit in Italy. Sadly this year we can't leave our Comune, which is like saying our city or village to go to the next town. We are all locked in our regions and can't travel Inter-regionally too. So watching you guys enjoying a meal together is making me happy and killing me. I hope in a year I will have a bunch of friends here that I can do this with at Christmas. It's very comforting to watch this with you guys. Merry Christmas lovely ladies. All the best for new year too.

I was told the reason fruit was so expensive in japan was because of how small japan is and so they dont have a enough space to mass produce , so i assume might be why they take so much care of the fruit they have like wrapping them i.e and so because it cost so much to grow and take care of and if they do get "messed up" or damaged produce. its just not necessary cost effective and that raises the price, i was just told that, ive never asked a Japanese farmer
