Virtually all of the dialogue in this movie was improvised. Actors were given a rough outline of the scene, but almost all of it is on the spot, with director Rob Reiner using as many first-takes as he could to ensure genuine reactions. Great movie. Great reaction!

One of the great comedies, done by geniuses. They spent a year writing a backstory for Spinal Tap, REALLY detailed, so that when they shot the improvised scenes, they could make up anything they wanted but it would be consistent.

Part of the beauty of this film is that it could be about almost any band. The team basically pulled together every rock and roll trope and strung them together - from the unwelcome girlfriend (think Yoko, Courtney or Nancy), to getting lost backstage, disagreements over marketing, etc. There's a great interview with Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick that could easily be the guitar collecting scene. There are a lot of bands out there that think the story is about them. (I actually saw a Peter Gabriel concert where the drummer emerged from the stage in a box, which had to be removed by the crew and reminded me of the pod scene.)

"Well, this piece is called 'Lick My Love Pump.'" Fun Fact: The actors are all competent musicians and they're actually playing on the soundtrack. Also, This Is Spinal Tap should get 11 stars. That's 1 more than 10. There is not a full script to "This Is Spinal Tap". There is just a general outline to the film. The actors created their own lines on the spot. Hilarity ensued. I mean, if you can't have fun putting a tiny "Stonehenge" in front of a bunch of actors and seeing how they react, you're just not trying. The whole thing is just perfectly made.

Do you fellows realize this band isn't for real? It's hard for me to tell! This is some very talented improv actors who created a band to poke fun at hair bands and all the conventions of a touring heavy metal rock group. The actor who played Nigel Tufnel, (real-life name Christopher Guest) took this same formula and applied it to dog shows (Best in Show) and small-town America putting on a musical (Waiting for Guffman) and other projects. Back when this movie first came out, Spinal Tap was booked as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live. There was no pre-announcement that this band is just made-for-comedy. I seem to remember they sang Big Bottom ("how could I leave this behind?"). I remember going to school the following Monday and hearing the stoner kids talking about how that band rocked pretty hard but they just weren't really all that good. They believed this was a real band!

Oh yes, this movie is a treat. The first time I watched it, I was at university and I didn't know it was a "Mock-umentary". It took me a minute to realize, but being a fan of older heavy metal bands at the time the movie came out, their story was consistent with the road stories of bands like Black Sabbath, KISS, and early Rolling Stones. As it turns out, the vignettes portrayed in this film were actually collected from many of the older bands' real experiences. If you want a true band history check out "Anvil: The Story of Anvil" (2008) which is the "Rock-umentary" story of the Canadian heavy metal band of the same name.

I worked a bit in college making contracts with performers and their Riders to the contract were crazy sometimes. @nathanthomas5133
@nathanthomas5133 Жыл бұрын
A lot of it wasn’t pickiness. Van Halen used to ask for one colour of M&M’s not because they wanted one colour but to see whether the venue would actually read the rider & would do what they were told to do, as they had lots of pyros & effects & they knew that if the venue was so sloppy that they couldn’t even do the rider properly they probably couldn’t be trusted with the more important stuff like making sure the safety was on point. It was about seeing how professional the venue was.

I've seen the 'behind the scenes' myself both as a musician and sound engineer and never demanded odd stuff. I know from other larger bands that they sometimes had a reason for this though. One said that he asked for a quite rare honey type. If the organizer actually tried to do this less relevant task, the odds of the rest being well organized were higher. So this was an extra way to test organizers. I preferred some quiet before going onstage but never needed to ask. A band member preferred specific simple food to have some routine in different places. Though funny enough, a few times organizers did something extra without us asking just because they assumed :P

It wasn't just about pyros and the obviously dangerous stuff. I remember seeing in some documentary that in some venues the stage structures might not even take the weight of all the gear or the electrics might not be up to task. (Can't remember which band, though.) When you get down to it, on a stage with just the sort of necessary equipment, it literally weighs a ton and uses loads of power, etc. So, before they even set up or unpacked their gear and did all the work, they could go to the backstage and simply see whether the candy bowl contains a specific colour or not, etc. Instead of then spending time arguing with the venue manager, or whoever, whether the structures can support all the weight and whether it's all proper, etc., you know, technical stuff that would be a hassle to get into and difficult to prove, they could just point at the simple, obvious breach of contract and cancel the gig before they had to do all the work for nothing or work in dangerous situations and invite a crowd of people in there.

This movie has the best commentary track. It's the band all in character and honestly, it's funnier than the movie itself.

Appropriately, I just listened to their album, "Break Like the Wind" in my car on the way to/from work last week. And I laughed my [buns] off! Truly one of the greatest commute albums ever. : )

The DVD for this movie is funny because it includes a little "where are they now" featurette for the documentarian, which is just Rob Reiner still wearing the same hat and not at all subtly saying he was available to film other documentaries.

Yes the history of drummers being replaced was very common with rock groups. That’s why it’s funny in this mockumentary

This has been called one of the most chillingly accurate documentaries in history by more than one actual rock band. My favorite bit of "Spinal Tap in real life" trivia is that one of R.E.M.'s early, Murmur-era gigs was, no shit, at an actual Air Force base.

The Stonehenge mishap - a real thing, if inversed. Black Sabbath had a tour planned for their Tyr album, but miscalculated feet and meters, so instead of a fairly tall 18 foot three-piece installation, it was an enormous structure no stage could fit.

I love that the band is always just behind the trend in music. I highly recommend Best In Show if you want to see a similar movie by a lot of the same people in their prime. Waiting for Guffman is alright and worth it if you just want to see more of them.

I’m still not sure whether they figured out this is a fake band and a mockumentary; or, if they did, at what point in the film? Because I see no moment of realization and they seem to be invested from the beginning that this is a real band. Lol!

One of my favorite movies of all time! Fran Drescher was the hostess of the party whose voice you hated so much. She was probably most known for the sitcom The Nanny that ran through the 90s. The head mime waiter was comedian and actor Billy Crystal, and the waiter was comedian and actor Dana Carvey. Both have been on SNL as well. Artie Fufkin (of Polymer Records) was played by Paul Shaffer, David Letterman's band leader on his late night talk shows. I took the character of Jeanine to be more or less a spoof of Yoko Ono in a way. Coming into the band hooked up with the lead singer and making all sorts of changes that were not necessarily taken very well. By the by, I'm a karaoke DJ, and I sing Big Bottom frequently. \m/- -\m/

I always thought the name Fufkin was a nod to Martin Scorsese from the movie The King of Comedy where Robert De Niro plays Rupert Pupkin.

I feel like the sandwich bit with Nigel is meant to set up how dumb he is so that when Jeanine enters the film and it’s clear that he hates her, we don’t side with him right away. It’s only later as she starts interfering with the band and causing problems that we realize Nigel was right about her.

The soundtrack to the movie had an all black cover. The actors all played their instruments and wrote the songs. There are 90 minutes of unused footage as bonus material on the DVD release. Their were two commentaries recorded for the DVD, one as the characters and another with the actors. The movie is sprinkled with famous people playing parts, none of which you seemed to recognize.

For more great "Mock"-umentaries, there's "The Rutles" Beatles spoof, "Best In Show" dog shows, "A Mighty Wind" folk music, or “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” Woody Allen has done a couple: "Take the Money and Run," and you can find a bootleg of the never-released "Men of Crisis: The Harvey Wallinger Story" (which sends up the Nixon Administration) on KZfaq.
