As a Lithuanian, I gotta tell you Americans: it's coming faster than you think. We used to qualify for every major tournament just because we're Lithuania. We just had more culture and basketball history so we beat teams like Germany, Angola and Brazil by default. It's not the case anymore. We failed to qualify for the Olympics for the first time ever for the same exact reasons the US is struggling against Nigeria and Australia. The world caught up and we didn't work as hard anymore. Obviously, the US has an insane amount of talent and resources. But pride and teamwork are something earned, not given. I still think the US is taking gold but it will not be easy at all. At the end of the day, guys like Giannis and Jokic are representing weaker teams, they don't play together vs the US. But it will be interesting for sure.

The Olympics will be interesting. The difference between teams like Australia/Spain/Serbia and the US is that overseas players are developed from a young age to play a role in their club's senior team and a lot of them are used to being bench, then gradually getting a role in the team and some becoming stars. Whereas in the US players are mostly developed as individuals so they can get college scholarships/go pro. This US team is made up almost entirely of guys who have pretty much been the first or 2nd option their entire lives. I still think they are the favourites, solely because they will have at least 4 of the best 5 players on the court at all times. But if they lose, it will be because of their style of play and inability to play actual team basketball.

A man has as much control over where he is born as he does over the colour of his skin. People didn’t want him to be playing and weren’t going to support him because of where he was born. Not his political ideology or the threat of nuclear war. It wasn’t Gorbachev who was drafted. To judge someone’s physical ability or their potential or their worthiness of opportunities because they are from another country, even a hostile one, is unfair. I mean if people started booing an Iranian, Iraqi or Pakistani today I would hope they were rightly called out on their racism. War doesn’t excuse losing our humanity.
@albinocj969

“To be fair” was poor wording; my bad. I was just trying to say it could have been a reason people didn’t like the pick, among other reasons. Never did I say that it was a good thing though. It is blatantly obvious that it is not good to hate someone simply because of race, country of origin, political view, social status, etc.

@@emilchandran546 That’s not racism. Obviously it wasn’t the players fault. But that’s sometime the way it is when countries abuse their power; they hurt their people. All-Star teams that don't play together as a team very long, aren't going to be as good as teams that play together for a long time. Players learn what their teammates are thinking, where they like to get the ball, and just generally how to complement each other on the court. Interest in NBA has been dropping over the years. It's not as much fun to watch, any more. I stopped watching in the early 2000s, mainly to free up time for other activities. But when I tune in to watch at random, nowadays, it's not the same game. Not as team-oriented as it used to be.

I'm happy he didn't play his whole career in the NBA. I'm from Lithuania. My father told me stories what it meant for the national pride in an occupied and oppressed small country when Sabonis-led Lithuanian team from a small city beat the best talent all of Russia had to offer and won the Soviet Union National League three times in a row, beating Moscow CSKA in the finals. Lithuanians felt that these were indirect battles for independence and they were very important for people emotionally. Americans got to see enough great talent in the NBA. Yes, I'm curious how Sabonis would have compared. But his career was special and important in a different way.

This is true and it shows you as well how under appreciated is Steph Curry and how he is very under sold in today’s NBA by fans and media. What separates Curry from anyone in this team USA including KD is he is not just an iso guy which he can be but he is the best off the ball player in the nba meaning he doesn’t need to iso or dribble the ball to get his buckets. So it’s tough guarding him because he can beat you on the ball and off the ball in many ways yet people be downplaying he isn’t a legend and disrespect him.

There’s a reason why guys like MJ and Kobe only got more intense as their careers progressed. It’s easier for later generations to achieve skills like theirs when they’ve seen the greats in action. It's not just about the foreign players' development, but the fact that NBA's officiating's just getting softer and softer comparing to the FIBA's rules. That'll make a soon to be impossible task to win international titles to US team. Players of the NBA are always surprised in international tournaments when they can be touched or defensed a bit tougher comparing to the NBA. Officials shouldn't be so soft, Adam Silver should do something about it asap.

The NBA wants $ so they tired to appeal to the world by changing the rules away from iso ball. It has backfield. The floor is so spread out that everyone is in iso. Help defense takes too long to double team and leaves shooters wide open. Greed has ruined the NBA. It's a jump shooting contest, if Europe actually plays defense I'll watch them instead.

Considering that Nigeria and Australia have plenty players with nba experience, wouldn't their teams be soft too? Yes, the NBA is soft but I don't think that has anything to do with us losing international games. It's not the NBA vs the World anymore. The Olympics is basically nba players playing against each other representing their home countries.

the way those Americans responded to the Sabonis first-round pick breaks my heart. I understand the geopolitical sensitivities between both countries during that time period (though much of that disdain harbored was because of American ethnocentrism and a Capitalistic fear of socialism, neither merited) but that man managed to grow up in what was essentially a foreign enemy of the U.S. and got drafted into one of the most coveted leagues in the world in the same country that hates him, discriminately so. That story is as American as apple fucking pie, much respect for that tenacious baller from the Soviet Union. Thanks for this awesome piece of history.

David Stern was a complete and ignorant fool for his comments on Arydas Sabonis. Us Lithuanians wanted no part of the Soviet Union since we were occupied by them. Sabonis wasn't from the Soviet Union, he was from Lithuania which happened to be occupied by the Soviet Union. As a pro athlete, he had no choice of doing anything other than representing the USSR. He would never have played for the Soviets if he had a choice to play for his own country. Also,4 of the 12 players on the 1988 Soviet squad were Lithuanian. Another 2 were Latvian and Estonian. Out of a territory of nearly 300 million people, half the team was represented by countries totaling 6 million people. But David Stern was very superficial and nasty about it, just like the Karens and Chads booing in Portland.
