I saw my boys in blue struggling to get to pucks, win board battles, make passes, make defensive plays, and watched them practically dump and chase (or mostly just dump) pucks all game. NHL refs are just bad all around. Most nights you can't even establish what is and isn't a penalty within the confines of the same game. My two cents as a person who has no dog in this fight (I'm neutral/friendly with regard to both teams): The Rangers giving up penalties like that will bite them in the ass if they keep it up. Carolina will figure out how to get the PPGs. Carolina: same advice, except that the Rangers already have your number. Get more disciplined. I called Rangers/Carolina with the Rangers in 7 way back at the beginning in my bracket. I still stand by that. Minor tweaks to that last game, and Rangers lose in reg 4-2. Carolina gets home ice next, and I think we'll see. MSG is a notoriously difficult place to get an away win in and both games were hard fought by both sides. I think this series and the Canucks/Oilers series will be the most exciting hockey this round.

Great win. Super entertaining! Trouba needs to stop taking stupid penalties... as the captain, you have to be more disciplined. All we can hope for is a repeat of 2006; down 2-0 to Montreal and won 4 straight on the way to an eventual cup win. Unlikely to happen though. The injury bug with Pesce and Fast, the inconsistency of special teams with being one of the top PP and PK teams in the league during the regular season and then just falling apart in the playoffs is a killer. Igor is getting WAY to many easy shots that are keeping him hot and his head in the game. Tonight something under the radar is that after playing a game and a half is that the rangers trust more forwards to be on the ice allowing their big guns to be fresher during crucial PP moments. Only Rempe played less than 10 mins and 11 forwards played at least 15 mins. The canes whole fourth line played under 10 mins and barely played in OT, effectively they went with 9 forwards for most of the game. 0 seconds ago I agree shot difference is not a great stat to look at and the advanced stats bear it out the Rangers had the much higher expected goal total from the 3rd period on into the first and second overtime with much higher danger chances. I thought CAR played a great roughly first -70% of the game but the Rangers got stronger as the game wore on. Ultimately it felt like the NYR were going to get it done given the pressure. CAR has been right there and they need to find a way to win both at home. CAR PP needs to wake up if they are going to have a chance.

Just watched the highlights wow what a game I feel this series is going to get better. Rangers took care of home ice let's see what the canes can do at home

As a canes fan, it's been two very good games so far.

Refs have been calling those soft push / cross checks all playoffs and in critical times. Against canes in 2OT, against Van in 3rd of gm 6, and at least a couple more come to mind. Let em play
@MrCampbellambulus27 күн бұрын
So far this is exactly what I expect in this series- Igor is the difference maker. Canes are better 5-5 and Rangers special teams are better on PP and PK. It’s Igor that puts the Rangers at the decisive edge

Rangers aren’t even playing bad on. 5on5 they have more scoring chances past 2 games ?

As a Canes fan, the only positive I have from this series is I’m falling in love with the Ranger’s goals song. Which we’ve heard more than I’d like 😂 GG New York

As a canes fan, we aren't winning of we cant score a powerplay or kill off a penalty. Thats what we've done all season, its what helped us win and get to the first round. The rangers are not gonna be easy and if we cant capitalize on someone like trouba in the box, might as well pack for Cabo now

I don’t get this “special teams bailed them out” mantra. Special teams are a part of the game just like 5 v 5 is. Rangers just did better on it than Carolina. Rangers are also good at generating powerplays by their movement and play. Not to mention, as you said, they had a lot of high-danger chances this game and most weren’t on the PP - in fact, several Powerplays Carolina’s Penalty Kill actually had the better chances ie at the end of regulation. Also, there were plenty of missed and weak calls on both sides throughout the game, not to mention several sketchy icings/offsides going against both teams. Refs have really been on one in this series and not in a good way. ETA: as the ESPN announcer mentioned at the time of the Skjei penalty, it was also about where the crosscheck occurred. If that was in the corner, probably no penalty. But you can’t take a guy down like that in the middle of the ice when he has the puck, it’s just begging for a break/odd-man rush going the other way, then Rangers fans would be angry over the non-call that lead to a prime scoring opportunity.
@alanvanasch479327 күн бұрын
Regardless of what calls were made, 12 power plays is too many for a playoff game. The refs saw it get a little chippy early then tried to calm it down by calling too much. Ruins the flow of what's two great teams
@MikeCo3227 күн бұрын
Carolina favours the shooting-from-anywhere strategy all game long, so they often have high shot totals, even if they don’t have many great chances. Like where some teams will throw the puck down low and go battle for it again when they don’t have options, the Hurricanes will throw it on net for a weak SOG.

Goodrow was called for the same penalty in the 1st. Refs will make this call 100% of the time because of where the puck was.

Is it the second 5-hole Freddie's goal that is also a loosing goal for Carolina vs NYR?
@scottlewis552127 күн бұрын
that might have been a weak call, but the refs missed Zibanejad getting high sticked in the face in front of the net before this.

I am a Rangers fan as well, and I'm glad they're up 2-0, but losing at even strength and having special teams be the crutch isn't a sustainable way to win a series or a cup. I'm getting vibes of the Tampa and Devils series and I don't like it. All that being said the only concern now is beating the Canes a 3rd time and continuing to work from there

Die hard NYR fan here, 36 years and counting. I haven't felt great about the rangers overall through the first 2 games. I have been impressed by their resilience, their special teams, and Igor of course, but the canes have looked to be the team pushing the pace more often than not. Rangers have put on heavy pressure at times and also had as many good scoring opportunities but overall I feel the ice has been tilted a little bit throughout the first 2 games. Happy to be where we are though. Every team remaining is tough and you need every advantage you can get in these playoffs. LFGR!!!!

Trouba with a spectacular miss! Good thing he missed because if he had he connected, I could see supplemental discipline.
@brianharvey438827 күн бұрын
As a Canes fan they are definitely horrible at special teams so far this series but what is driving me the most crazy is how easily they are coming off their discipline....not that they would have scored anyway but they miss 3 or 4 full power plays by taking stupid penalties right after starting a power play. Svech is off his rocker.......trochek baited guetzel (great play by Tro!!) and guetzel went for it. Very frustrating but outside of that the rangers PP is so scary!! Gotta win game 3 or the brooms come out. Go Canes!

I'm only annoyed that THIS series is in the second round. The Canes having 111 points, being the overall 2nd best record in the East and playing a series on the road in the second round just feels wrong. But hey, the NHL loves their divisions.

The Officiating was bad. On both sides. Missed calls and obvious ones at that on both sides. However: this was the most exciting hockey game since the most recent regular season match between these very same teams. It was a clash of polar opposites. pure chaos versus absolute structure. It was close, entertaining, exciting and great hockey all around. Several points where i thought my rangers blew it and several points i thought the canes blew it. It was great, i want more of it. just better officiating.

I am not a rangers fan, but to me that cross checking call is more or less textbook cross checking. Not a particularly hard crosscheck, but badly placed, and timed. That it led to the guy wiping out I think is the only reason it got called, but I have a hard time seeing it as a non-call that makes sense too. Both hands on the stick, and a shove using the stick, causing a turnover is fairly cut and dry. Now, if you wanted to say 5 on 5 via a diving penalty, sure. Id be surprised if the guy who charged for a headshot at the start of the video doesn't get a suspension, regardless of missing the hit

The thing is this probably isn't even top 3 most painful Hurricanes playoff losses in the last calendar year. Shoutout to the Rangers, but man Carolina has no puck luck come playoff time

The Rangers better figure out how to win a game with a more commanding lead. These one goal wins won’t last forever in their favor.
@JAWNDOEmusic27 күн бұрын
people kept saying how great their ST's are as if we're not top 3 in both as well - in the playoff the single biggest factor for a winning team imo is a hot goalie, i cant remember the last to win in spited/despite their goalie - Iggy > Freddy all day!

This series is going to be a drag out brawl. The Hurricanes are still very much in it, and neither team should feel at all comfortable until they have a fourth win.

As soon as Carolina got a PP in OT, the refs were going to look for anything to even it out. That’s usually how it goes, even if the second is weak

Am I the only one that wasn't laughing at the Trouba/Necas almost-collision? I saw the way Trouba's skate was coming down right on Necas' head/neck region and got extremely scared. That could have been very, very bad.

Canes fan here, frustration is definitely a good word to describe this series. The Canes powerplay has such good passing but nobody's willing to shoot, screen or move their feet to wear out the Rangers PK. Not to mention we get to watch as offer sheet KK is invisible and warms the bench during OT, meanwhile Troch scores the game winner because we let him walk. 5-on-5 though the Canes are definitely the better team thus far but special teams have to come back into form if we've got a shot. Good luck to your squad the rest of the way, hopefully the Canes make this a series in the next 2.

They mentioned on the broadcast that the penalty had to be called because of the location on the ice. Although weak, it is a penalty and could have resulted in a breakaway. If it happened anywhere else on the ice, they probably don't make that call.
@SoulControlla9927 күн бұрын
They had to call that. The Canes would have gotten a glorious scoring opportunity because of it. It wasn't the action itself, it was the place where it was done.
