In this video tutorial, we will learn how to make cold process soap at home using natural colorants.
The botanical we are using will naturally colour the soap a gorgeous deep purple and online many recipes we will not be using alkanet for the colorant but rather using another soapmaking gem known as Madder root. Madder root creates a beautiful array of color shades from pale pink to a deep purple and we will explain the different ways you can achieve great results in your own handmade soap. If you love making soaps with herbs and botanicals, you will love this soap base recipe!
Natural cold process soap recipe
80g Coconut oil
120g Palm oil
200g Olive oil
56g Sodium hydroxide
100g Distilled water
20g Hot water for infusion
5g Madder root powder
6g Cranberry seeds (optional)
Essential oil or fragrance oil (optional)

Glad you enjoyed it. I find it very much depends on where you buy the powder from and the variety they sell as they can be very different.

I love that!!! I need to order some. I’ve used Himalayan rhubarb powder which is a yellowish color but it turns the soap a beautiful red and same thing applies depending on how you add it depends on how vibrant the color is

This is Rubia cardifolia (Indian Madder Root), also known as manjistha and has some medicinal properties. I have used Rubia tinctorum (rose madder/common madder or dyer's madder) root chunks, which I prefer to the powdered form.

Cool, but how many of the 'medicinal' properties survive the saponification process?, thanks

I made this soap. Absolutely beautiful, however the powder I bought on Amazon ( we don’t have wanky weaver in USA) for 500 gr soap, I had to use about 15 gr powder. First I used 5 gr, turned out light mauve, 10 gr, darker mauve, 15 gr just like yours. It’s beautiful. I wonder how the color will change over time. Lighter or darker? Thank you for sharing. 🙏🏻❤️

I wish I could get that deep purple color. My mistake could be that I didn't add at trace, I added to the oils before the lye (hot process)

I have done two videos with it so you will be able to see the difference between the amounts used but you need a fair amount for a strong purple

Hi there, another soaper that I watch said it's necessary to melt the entire container of palm oil and stir it because the stearic acid settles to the bottom. I'm wondering, are you using no-stir palm oil (hydrogenated?) or do you disagree that we should melt it? Thanks
@SoapSchoolUK
