Dear Africa Business Jumpstarters, during our last BIG Live session where hundreds of you attended...we had tech problems....and I only noticed later that my slides did not move! Watching the replay the next day I cannot believe that hundreds of you stayed LIVE in the Zoom room watching the same single slide!! I messed up, I really apologize, but you guys rock! So I recorded the entire training again for you the next morning. With slides! :) Thank you all so much for your amazing commitment!

i have started a customer service business in a small West African country that has no major international hotels and less than 5 hotels that are considered 4* by international standards. I have looked at online reviews of the larger hotels and, despite some poor reviews, I doubt the management thinks there are any problems with their customer service. I have been very quiet in the ABA community but will recommit to utilizing the resources available. Thank you.

Dear Syed, fantastic to hear! Quick tip: Efficient farm managers you can trust and you being on site most of the days is absolutely key in the beginning. The work ethics in the rural communities in Rwanda are sadly quite poor, and I have seen a couple of agri start-ups fail here recently because they put too much trust in someone else managing it for them. Women prove to be much more committed and reliable and the money ends up in the families and communities who need it. Good luck!

Honey is in huge demand, in Africa and also in the Middle East. For those markets what is lacking is 1. quality (most honey is heated or not properly treated) and it lacks 2. quality PACKAGING and BRANDING. Again, this for Africa and the Middle East. But it is ORGANIC honey that is really big in demand in the West - Europe and Northern America. There is a lack of organic honey because it is trending among consumers. Bee wax is also high in demand. Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Ethiopia are the best countries in Eastern Africa to get this started. Ethiopia has the best local expertise & quality for honey production, but is the most risky among the four.

Great content! I'll be repatriating to Rwanda in a year. I'll be doing remote teaching, but I also have lots of experience in customer service as it relates to the hospitality industry. I'm a certified sommelier, with an English degree with a creative writing minor. I'll have an American teaching certification by the time I get to Rwanda as well. My problem is that with me being someone moving from the US, I'm not sure how to price my services. I would imagine that the price I might charge here in Houston Texas, would be much more than would be realistic in Rwanda. Is there any way to figure out the pricing or get some guidance?
@dr.harnet466
@dr.harnet466 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Carl, great to hear! It is difficult for me to make any suggestions regarding the pricing, as it would entirely depend on your package (content, length, target industry etc). Yes, you may charge more in the US, and you would probably need to cut this down, but generally speaking companies in Africa understand that good service delivery by an international consultant does not come cheap.

I live in the UK and have my mum in Houston, sisters, nephews and nieces. I have invested hugely in Africa. I don't know much about your experience but my general advise is that you should gather enough capital in the USA before moving there. It takes a bit of experience to understand Africa and its opportunities and challenges and if you move because of some basic knowledge and planning, you may quickly be disappointed.

Yes, you can do business in Africa,first take a trip down to any of the countries in Africa , let me give you free unsolicited advice , Look at countries with large population , take a trip up there and take note. Africa needs so much ,you only need to look strategically and make your move .Africa is a huge market ,one of the biggest markets in the world .Africa for now is a consuming economy. Your education in service based business is good, but not the best. I think you should encourage my African brothers and sister to a production base business. As you may already know, America and many other countries are going down the economic drain because they no longer manufacture goods, but prefers to buy from China. So to move Africa to the next level, we should be encouraging the people to think manufacturing. Anyhow, thank you for helping Africans to wake up from their slumber…

Service based businesses, on which this your video is focused, as opposed to manufacturing, is what had for about two decades, adversely impacted the US economy, while China on the other hand, was growing her manufacturing infrastructures exponentially. What Afrika needs to grow and compete at the global level is manufacturing operations. Offering services based businesses will not help Afrika that much, but rather, position Afrika as a market to sell products manufactured in other nations. This is what sank Greece and Ireland economies for decades because they did not develop their manufacturing infrastructures, instead, the major portions of their economies was service based. I am disappointed in your business strategy for Afrika it is gonna further make Afrika import dependent. If you really want to succeed in Afrika, start manufacturing operations. The market is so huge that when you manufacture what people need, you will grow big. Afrika needs manufacturing businesses that will enable her to be self reliant, provide employment for our peoples and manufacture the products Afrikan people need.
@dr.harnet466
@dr.harnet466 Жыл бұрын
Valid points, dear Israel. Yes, manufacturing is crucial, but it is not always the most affordable or best industry to get into as a start-up, as it is a little capital intensive. The service industry is vital if Africa wants to become competitive globally and much easier to navigate for the Diaspora going back to Africa often with limited resources. It is important that we succeed, because 80% of all businesses in Africa fail in the first 3-5 years. Hence taking some barriers down with easier business models that need less money, time, and are less risky is in my view a valid alternative that allows for hard currency flows, tax payments, and employment to be increased for Africa. I am just presenting various business & investment options.
