@@Benri05 that would have been the sensible thing to do, obv. but legally speaking, the penalty for committing the crime he was at the time on bond for, is way worse than simply violating the bond by being a no show for his hearing. he not only must now pay that bond out of his own pocket assuming he wasn't fronted money by a bondsman, but he demonstrated to the court he was guilty of the crime he was charged for, as well as committing contempt of court by his appearance.

So an interesting thing to note is that this was because of a clerical error on the part of the court. The guy had already had his license reinstated but it hadn't been filed in the system yet. Guy was completely in the right. The judge didn't care. An innocent man was sent to jail.

My buddy is a public defender, he's had DUI suspects show up to court drunk. So they were DUI driving to court to face a DUI charge, then they're planning to DUI back home. He takes their keys and makes them hang around in the parking lot until they sober up or get a ride home.
