I've especially wanted to mention that I personally saw the real-life basis of our 2 favorite Great Western tank engines in this video as well; which certainly happens to be exactly the inspiration for Duck and Oliver since Duck's basically based on a GWR 5700 class pannier tank engine while Oliver certainly had been basically based on a GWR 14XX 0-4-2 wheel configuration kind of tank engine!

It actually kinda worked quite well. The cylinders were made to work both as a diesel engine or with steam. Now, because steam engines are better for starting heavy loads the idea was when moving off steam was used just like a normal steam engine, then once above 5mph or so steam would be shut off and the switch over to diesel would happen. Once up to speed the steam was only used as a "booster" for hills etc. Also the boiler wasn't coal fired but instead the hot exhaust gasses from the diesel engine is what boiled the water.

@@HyperCat72 It changes! It was the 9F simply for the pulling power and then I learned of the GWR 28xx that pulled over 2000 tons 60 years before a 9F did it. Can I have both?

Stepney’s popularity goes beyond the character from the Railway Series.

I like it too. Its kinda wierd seeing walschaerts valve gear on a gwr engine.

Hopefully it'll be in service again soon, it's been withdrawn at the start of 2023 for an overhaul
