Connor Bedard has the potential to be the next Auston Matthews. You may be surprised that I didn't say Connor McDavid. Here's why.

This video just makes me happy for the talent in the league and coming into the league, Bedard looks amazing and I can’t wait to see him make his NHL debut. Not a fan of comparisons but this kid is something special for sure

Yeah I agree. It's always difficult to say whether or not a player will be just as good as "x" player. I just wanted to point out the similarities with him & Matthews release and how they have the unique ability to beat a goalie from almost anywhere on the ice because of HOW they release the puck. Every year, the talent keeps getting better and better. Can't wait to see what the league looks like 10 years from now.

His top hand drops even further than matthews; it’s like he creates a pitchfork contortion the way he yanks the top of his stick through the flex point, I’ve never seen anything like it before

I watch every Leaf game and a fair amount of Bedard at this point. I think Bedard has a similar elite shot, but his toolbox is a lot bigger. His playmaking ability is a lot better than Matthews - it reminds me of Marner or Crosby. The big problem with Matthews is that when his shots aren't working, he looks invisible a lot of the time. There are games where he does a good job defensively, but I've seen my share of invisible games or birdbrain turnovers to know that if he isn't scoring, you might consider benching him because he does more harm than good. Even in 2023, I've seen him lose many overtimes and games by irresponsible turnovers no 11 million dollar should be making. Bedard is never invisible - he's always trying to create something rather than go through the motions, and he rarely makes bad or risky plays. He is actively engaging his mind on the ice and only passes when he thinks it will make a good play rather than force it when it won't fit. Fantilli looks to be another risky player GMs might want to take a closer look at before drafting at #2. I lost count of his bad passes, risky plays, horrible icing calls, and low quality play at the world juniors in the first 4 games. Not impressed.

One thing I notice is this kid already has so many haters. I think that's a product of the hype TSN has consistently given him over the past 3 years they expect him to be some perfect God so every little detail of his game is nitpicked. Connor will be a force to recon with that's for sure. He will need to grow significantly and with that comes the weight. It will be tough to become the next Matthews or McDavid without those attributes. He is an absolute gem to watch and I for one am really excited to see him make the NHL.

Agreed. I think he’s listed at 170 pounds or something? While I don’t think that will be a major issue since guys like Hughes & Kane have had success being a similar weight, it will certainly make it harder on him. Can’t wait to see his growth.

I honestly wish people will stop comparing Connor Bedard to Connor McDavid. They are different because their height and size are not at all the same. Let him grow and stop making him a target. However, I have never seen any 17 year old dominate the WJC than Bedard has. All the haters out there are just jealous because of his success and they are not able to do what Connor Bedard does. I personally think Bedard is more like Sidney Crosby because he makes his teammates better. He creates chances for them to score.

He will be as good as mcdavid. He's so young but the second he steps foot in the league he's a top 5 shot. Great feet great vision, few years of strength training and I think we see an ovechkin type young dominant player.
