Thanks for tuning in! I specialize in solving lawn problems and implementing strategies to fix lawn problems. Weather you have crabgrass that's not dying, too much thatch, lawn fungus, over watering problems or an ugly lawn there's not a lawn problem I can't solve. Try the Ginja 5 Steps to diagnosing a lawn you'll be glad you did. Don't forget to checkout my playlist.
Can you spray weeds after it gets hot outside? The answer may surprise you. the number one piece of advice that i will give you is read the label. Most herbicides can be applied when the outside air temperatures reach 85 degrees F. In some cases you can spray up until 90 degrees F. Ultimately the answer is on the label of the weed killer your going to use.
Other factors to consider are low humidity and condition of the lawn. It is important NOT to spray herbicide or weed killer when the lawn isn't in a healthy state. Most herbicides contain salt. Putting salt on a wound will cause more damage.

I've been doing homework for the last three nights, watching your videos and taking notes. I like that you live near CO and seem to deal with a lot of the same issues we face. We landscaped our backyard this year and planted our grass from seed. Followed all the directions, watered as directed, stayed off the lawn for 5-6 weeks, and watched a ton of weeds come up with our new grass. We were told this is normal. We continued to care for the lawn and problem got worse. Finally stumbled across someone who actually knows what they're talking about and has proof to back up his words (so wish we had come across your videos in April). We saw in one of your videos where you visited someone for their bday and told them with new grass they shouldn't use pesticides but would have to pull weeds by hand. So I've spent the last few days pulling the weeds. What video do I watch to see what to do next? It's fall and I don't want to ruin the grass that has survived, but definitely have only half a lawn. Please help!

Hi Tammy! Great to hear you're out there slaying that lawn. I recommend using herbicides when you get about 12 weeks out from the seeding. in the meantime if it's getting overwhelming you can use tenacity after 6 weeks. I recommend holding off on that if you can. I would focus on your watering practices. make sure you do a water output cup test and prove your water coverage and figure out your water output per station so you don't over water or under water each area. see and perform the video exercise at the end of the page at myallgreen.com/watering

THANK YOU.... JUST WHAT I NEEDED.... We have cool temps starting NOW and just got my herbicide delivered. Has been in the 90's for weeks but we have some "cooler" weather coming. Starting today and for the rest of the week it will be in the high 70's to low 80's. I am going to hit early morning, low wind, coolest temps of the day. It will be a cool (high 70's low 80;s for several days). I will spot spray. I am using Tenacity which I used once before with good results but need a second round. I am adding Q4, and will spot spray for lawn. I also have Gordons Ornamec 170 (for grassy weeds taking over area where I planted ground cover and was bare otherwise. Can't wait to see how that works out. I tried pulling weeds and that was a nightmare.

Ahh so I was aware of not spraying at high temps, but was not aware that weeds become more resistant to herbicide during the heat. So I would spray once things cooled down a bit at round 7pm, but the results were mixed... no turf damage, but also spotty weed killing. I will try to do it in the morning and see if I get better results, thanks!

Wow, more Great Info Ginja! 2 items Brother, excuse the long lead-in on #2: 1. Since I'm your Virginia Zoysia Grass ninja & I cannot use the amazing Tenacity... what can i use as a fall Pre-Emergent & weed killer if I want to overseed now? Am I out of luck & just cant seed? 2. With YOUR GREAT help last summer. winter, spring... and EVEN in spite of my frustration with weeds in my Zoysia Grass last year & our warm Virginia winter ... AND in my frustration killing some of my Dormant Zoysia with Roundup while trying to kill crazy tough weeds... YOU helped me have an AMAZING Zoysia lawn EMERGE THIS YEAR! Oh I almost choked after seeing that huge lawn being watered with sprinklers! We are so severely dry in the West (I'm Sierra Foothills) it is unheard of and we are only watering trees. Besides the fire risk, many folks have switched to drip after removing their lawn altogether. Until water becomes exorbitant and untenable will we all convert. It would be nice to see some endorsement of this idea in your excellent videos.

I typically wait until the late evening to spray or sometimes I can spray early morning, but either way, I will irrigate the lawn before I spray herbicides, so that the lawn won't be under any stress. I have not noticed any temperature warnings on Fungicide labels though.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 3 жыл бұрын
not as common for fungicides to have restrictions on the label. the issue is evaporation. I would still suggest spraying early morning or later in the evening. less stress on the plant and better over all uptake.

I have approximately 1200sq ft of grass area. It's almost down to bare dirt after not watering, mowing as low as possible, power raking with sun joe and manually raking what's dry and coming up. I'd say there is less than 25% left of any grass/weeds which is all dry and yellow. I bought a bag of Scott's turf builder tall fescue seed which treats up to 5000sq ft.

Question?... @Pest & Lawn Ginja When spraying herbicides early morning & there's dew on the grass should you wait for that to burn (evaporate) off before applying or is it OK to apply on top the moist grass ?

depends on how wet and thick the dew set it. might be best to give it a few hours to burn off before you apply. its all about getting the herbicide to stick to the blades of grass.

Hey Ginja, I just sprayed Tenacity on my lawn for the first time (in CT) to try to get rid of crabgrass and other weeds prior to core aeration and overseeding next week. I pretty much had to spray the whole lawn (10K sq ft) due to the amount of crabgrass I had. However.......when I was done I realized that I only spread it at half dose. I misread the syringe - DUH. So......what d you think I should do ? Wait until two weeks have passed and see what happens before re-applying ? I don't want to push back my overseeding as I will have leaves to deal with soon - lots of leaves - and I don't want to mulch or bag if I have seedlings from my overseeding.

What questions do we need to ask, or should ask when we think we need a new sprinkler setup? If I each out to a sprinkler guy, how do I know if he is any good? Thanks!
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 3 жыл бұрын
for the most part my suggestion is to design or have a master plan of what you want in a landscape setup first. ie. where the trees are going to go, curbing, flowers etc.. determine the areas you want grass for the long run. then use landscape paint, draw it out in the area. then determine what heads you want. rainbird, hunter, impact etc... most companies have a tool you can use to map out sprinkler head placement by uploading design schematics on there apps. pretty cool in my opinion. at the end of the day proper overlap will account for 90% of your success in having a great lawn. fantastic question. If you reach out to a sprinkler technician ask them how they can ensure you that overlap will be proper. This is achieved by doing a water output cup test. super simple. see myallgreen.com/watering and look at the video at the end of the page for a reference.

Question: I just have dirt. Been pulling by hand. The storm (in summer in California?!😮) brought more weeds where there were none! BUT, weeds did not come back where I pulled by hand. @pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 4 жыл бұрын
That is a fantastic question. There are not a lot of granular labels that will specifically tell you. Not a lot of difference other than the granular you should wet the grass slightly before the application and most products will want you to water it in directly. the water will change the soil temps and the blae stress so you may get away with doing it while its hotter. I still stand by my interpretation that its best to do this before you hit the Hot 90 degree threshold.
