No matter what weed killer you spray onto the lawn and no matter what grass type you have or what climate you live in your herbicide is going to come with label warnings having to do with temperature restrictions. The vast majority of products are going to tell you to not apply the product when daytime temps are above 90 degrees but that isn’t the whole story.
In this video I explain why that temperature warning is there, why weed killers can harm grasses when temps get high even if the grass type is tolerant to your product, and when to apply weed killers in the summer especially in areas that don’t usually cool off much at night.
For the most part for summer applications you should wait until the coolest morning of the week to apply to damage your turf grass the least… and you should only apply these products in high heat to lawns that are very healthy to begin with. Lawns that are stressed during periods of high heat will be far less able to deal with the extra stress load that comes with herbicidal applications.
In this video I also give an update to the project lawn and show us doing some spot spraying of weeds using a natural Iron HEDTA product from Natria. This isn’t a chemical and should be safe to use when compared to chemical products. The label for this product says to not apply when temps are over 85, we sprayed a few hours before day time temps hit 84.
Even if it doesn’t kill all the remaining weeds it will suppress them enough to get us through the summer into the seeding window for our climate.
I purchased the Natria product featured in this video at my local big box store but you can also buy it and other similar products online too. Here’s a direct Amazon affiliate to the Natria product we used: www.amazon.com/Natria-1005325...
In a future video I’ll be testing out Natria in my lawn along with a couple other chemical weed killers when my day time temps get over 100 degrees. When that video is released I’ll link to it here.
Lastly, you may want to see the following videos and articles I’m put together on weed prevention because preventing weeds is usually better than having to kill them after they emerge.

Awesome to hear Eddie! I recorded a temp reading of 105 today here in Klamath Falls! Never have I seen it get over 101 in my years living here and never has it been close to that in June! For experimentation today I sprayed a broadleaf weed when temps were at 101 and rising. Curious how the lawn responds around the spray 🤔 thanks for commenting and glad to have you in the subscriber fold!

Thanks Alex! 😊 Always glad to hear that my content is appreciated! And seriously, I can't remember seeing 100 in June ever where I live! I'm actually really excited to try spraying weeds in peak heat tomorrow midday. Curious how well my lawn holds up to the spray.

Interesting topic on high temperatures on lawn health. If I understand correctly, if grass is essentially in a “survival” mode at very high temperatures, are weeds in this same temperature survival mode and resist herbicide absorption? I do spot treat weeds in the early morning, and have been adding soap as a surfactant to minimize leaf run off. Not sure if it makes a difference, but I do this as habit. Very informative topic. Thanks for posting!

Hey Brian - great vid as usual. Sorry if the answer to this question is in there, I may have missed it. Our issue is that we have, essentially, "full coverage" of weeds, and lots of different kinds. Lots of grass, too, but lots of weeds. Here in the Northeast we're currently in a heat wave, but around this time of year there are lots of hot, humid days. Once the heat wave ends, can a wide application (of some type) be effective and safe in these conditions?

Very informative video. I have a question. I live in Louisville. I have Tall Fescue lawn, mowing at 4", put down Milorganite twice and RGS. Always have Brown Patch disease. This year I applied Scotts EX Fungicide mid May and mid June. So far no disease. I water twice a week. Dry here for the month of June. Do I apply Scotts EX again mid July, or do I wait and see if I have disease? Concerned about applying too much chemicals. Your lawn is beautiful!!! I can see you are a great Father by all you have in backyard for children!!!

I struggle with the same issue with my tall fescue as well, and I’m cutting the same height as you, 4”. The taller height helps hide some of the brown areas. This year, I wanted to test out the fungicide. I applied Scott’s Disease Ex, and sprayed propiconazole a week later in the front yard. It’s significantly better than the back yard (which received no fungicide), but not absolutely perfect. I do know that one year I mulched improperly, it was just too tall and I should have bagged it. After that single improper mowing the fungus spread like crazy, it ruined the whole lawn that season, it was really hard to bring it back.

*Read the instructions,* It does not sound like you are overwatering or doing anything to cause it (it just happens like weeds). When it gets HOT and HUMID and/or you get a lot of rain that might trigger a fungus outbreak. Also once you have it tends to stay year to year. You applied preventative rate? You have not exceeded max total for the year? You can add more per the LABEL 3-6 weeks apart. You have option to do nothing and wait and see. You know best what is right for your situation. There may be aTemp limit as well (read below) like herbicides. SOME of the temp limit is due to liquid spray applications evaporating with the chemicals before they can be absorbed, making it ineffective. However keep in mind NEXT YEAR you WANT to apply preventative fungicide again next year in May. Fungus tends to comes back where it has been before. Most important spread it PER LABEL. proper rate, evenly, and don't exceed the total per year. After a few years you may stop treatments and see if the fungus is gone. However it can always come back if conditions are right. It is a balancing act. I am all for putting less stuff on the lawn if able. I think (research this) too much fungicide will cause damage to the microbes in the soil. Selective herbicides can hurt grass. It is a balancing act. YOU DO HAVE OPTION to do nothing for now. If there are no brown patch leave it be. Keep in mind fungicide just reduces chance of fungus starting and stops the spread of existing fungus, but it does not cure it. You will likely get fungus again, especially in the same place, so keep up your spring preventative application or applications. After a few years you might eradicate it? I don't know. I have heard different things. It is my understanding disease and insects are like weeds, they can always come back. Even if you get fungus out your lawn and soil it can always come back. You may get to the point where you apply it every other year. You do want to keep the soil good and you don't want to kill the good bacteria in the soil.

Thanks Betty! I love it when my three year old comes up to me and thanks me for growing him "soft grass for him to fall on!" LOL We enjoy the yard as a family a lot; most vids I have to clean the yard for 20 min before filming or before mowing applying, etc. As for your question my area won't typically get brown patch like your area mostly because of the humidity. We also get far less rain so my irrigation schedule is very well defined. My grass only gets wet from sprinklers when I want it wet and I don't have to contend with late afternoon rain and wet humid leaves every other night. I would have to look up the label of your product but just follow those instructions on preventative rates and frequency of preventative applications without going over the single season max. It's still late June so you'll be experiencing a lot more days of heat and humidity to come... and if you want to apply less fungicide which I support then space your aps out a bit wider and skip the last one in the season.

@@TurfMechanic Thanks, that helps. I am leaning toward applying Scotts EX one more time mid July, but only on spots where it comes yearly. I love your channel. Maybe I need to move to Oregon, where there is no humidity.

How about just waiting till Fall to spray clover?
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic 3 жыл бұрын
For sure, waiting until Fall is a great option but some people simply don't want to wait that long and for those people it's best to make sure the grass is as healthy as possible before spraying in high summer temps.

I sub and liked many of your vids. Take this as constructive criticism, but this 25 minute video was too long. You rambled and repeated some things two or three times, with little to no order. You should should make bullet points for your own use to guide your discussion. *This video should be 10 minutes at MOST. *Then you throw in the "project (dirt) lawn" at end? That should not be in this video at all.* You all are kidding that is not a lawn in Oregon? You started with cool season grasses. OK great. Cool season grasses are stressing more in heat. Then somehow you say WARM season grass? OK fine. Just present the information that applies to either lawn type (like spray in the morning at min daily Temp), then point out differences between spraying cool and warm season lawns with herbicides if any. KZfaq channel Pest and Lawn Ginja has a video on this topic. It is better. Take a look at it. Focus on the topic of spraying herbicides during hot Temps. You had a good start for the first few minutes and then wondered and dragged on. Keep up the good work.

Perhaps I should have put the project lawn update into a video of it's own. I didn't storyboard the inclusion well but I thought it was relevant enough as an addon segment at the end for those interested. I appreciate your thoughtful constructive criticism though and always want to get better at what I do. :D as for warm season vs cool season grasses both types are affected by high temps when herbicide is sprayed on them. Even Allyn Hane published a vid this week showing his stunted St Aug grass after applying Celsius. My point was that just because warm season grasses grow well in high heat doesn't mean that herbicidal apps don't affect them; the effect of heat and herbicide on them is the same as it is for cool season grasses. As a yard owner if we focus on building up grass health more than anything then everything becomes easier and the grass system's tolerance for all threats biological and chemical increase. I'll have to watch that vid from P&LG - I don't know everything and I usually learn from his vids. Thanks for the tip. :)

I don't usually leave comments but I wanted to know what I could use to kill my weeds in hot weather and this video caught my eye , but after watching what seemed like 31/2 hours and still was only half done I finally gave up and moved on. This guy talks to everyone like we are morons or have a 3rd grade education. Constantly repeating himself and never getting to the point of the video. Think he just likes to hear himself talk. Could be why he has so many videos---sorry just my opinion but when I want information on a topic I am not interested in small talk or off subject conversation .
