WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We've been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

All three of you are right: it is tyranny, but it is their choice to live willingly under it. I'm currently in China, and my Chinese friends constantly lecture me that their leaders are better than ours because they have ~zero cases of Covid (also, leaders that tell them how many children they can have, but that doesn't concern them!?!). It's very F'd up, but it is their choice, so I respect it: China is ridiculously safe so long as you don't piss off the government. I'll be coming home in a bit over a month, leaving this BS behind me.

Love those 15 Principles. 2. When you're on top of your game, change your game. 4. Pass the ball. Leaders create leaders. 10. Know thyself. Keep it real. 12. Sacrifice. Find something you would die for and give your life to it. 15. Write your legacy. This is your time. Trying to think of an American team sport that embraces any of these.

The top busbar, the one with all the red heat shrink on the cables, all are connected together. It really doesn't matter which terminal you connect to. They could all be on one long terminal and all are positive. The busbar below is all negative, However, there are situations where you need to have the first terminals, + or - closest to the batteries. Feijoa is a fruiting plant commonly called a Pineapple Guava tree or bush. I have one growing here in northern California, they flower in the spring and produce small walnut sized fruits that mature in late fall to early part of winter. The fruit is ready to eat when it drops off the tree. Wonderful flavor. I hope you get the chance to try some locally grown freshly harvested and pass on your thoughts of it.

Heard a story years ago about when the British and the Maori were having a battle the British ran out of ammunition. @@supercarakita1148 Ha Ha Ha !!!! and years later the world's worst countries Leaders decided to build atomic bombs so it would be easier to kill people that disagreed with them, and the New Zealand Maori joined Greenpeace, sailed tiny boats up to the nuclear "testing" islands in the Pacific, and attacked the French, British and American Navy's boats with paint bombs !!! Then the French sneaked their Terrorist "army" into Auckland, planted limpit mines on the Rainbow Warrior flagship ( an old fishing trawler ) and blew it up. When a Maori in Northland saw some french "tourists" loading stuff out of their rental campervan into another rental car, ( was the French Navy frogmen/persons ) he wrote the registration down with his finger in the dust on his car window, and went home and run the cops. Later on, the cops were waiting for them when they returned the campervan to the place they had hired it from, and arrested them. ( Google Alain Mafar and Dominic Preuer ) They were found guilty of all sorts of stuff, including murder of the guy on board asleep, and the Americans and British Governments threatened the New Zealand Government with an economic boycott if the 2 French Army Terrorist Spy Murderers were not handed over to the French immediately. And that is when ALL NEW ZEALANDERS VOTED TO BAN ALL NUCLEAR POWERED OR ARMED AIRCRAFT, BOATS, RUBBER DUCKIES, PEOPLE, FOOD, ANYTHING REMOTELY NUCLEAR, from being anywhere New Zealand. The Government passed it into LAW. As well as that, new Zealanders WILL NEVER AGAIN fight and die on any battlefield for the British, French, or the Americans. The Americans and the British KNEW IN ADVANCE what the French were planning and did nothing. So they had their plans of building a joint South Pacific Military Base in Milford Sound in the south of the South island of New Zealand, CANCELLED. And as well as that, we all stopped buying their products. We have all stopped them buying up our land, and now 94% of our exports GO ELSEWHERE. I cut up my British Passport and burnt it. And my cussie bros cut down the British Flagpole, and someone threw a wet towel at their Queen. ( she has not been back ) The world can keep all the crap they make, and that's why anybody with any brains wants to move here to live, and have, a good life. Idiots get the boot up their backsides.

When working on a panel with close black and red wires, tape your metal tools so you can't accidentally touch the wrong contacts. Taping close wires on the panel is smart when removing washers and bolts that can arc if dropped while working. Bending solar panels have a short life - 1 or 2 years sometimes. New 400+v bifacial panels is a worthwhile upgrade because it will take solar rays that bounce off the water. New panels can double your charging. When the alternators are upgraded you can save 600lbs by getting rid of the generator. By the way, to stave off boredom ... you two married adults could crack open a Karma Sutra book - I hear it's a page-turner; just sayin'.

I’ve just had this power issue with my wife moving to Dallas with me, with her sewing machines. Didn’t think about it because even though I knew the power circuits are different, it’s never been an issue with laptops or cell phone chargers etc. Luckily we solved the problem with a step up transformer.

If/when you ever buy a new boat would you buy one outfitted for 240V? Is it simpler to adapt a boat for 120V? I'm sure, like catamaran vs monohull preferences, those in the sailing cruiser community have fairly strong opinions on voltage. I'm just curious what yours would be.
@armslength2618
@armslength2618 2 жыл бұрын
Not only are voltages different, frequencies are different as well. That has to be considered when hopping between regions because not all appliances are [yet] capable of transitioning between 50 Hz and 60 Hz. In the 'americas' essentially all residences are supplied with 240 volts nominal anyway, but at 60Hz. The NZ/AUS standard is 230v nominal and 50Hz. Close enough on voltage, but for motors frequency would be a problem. The 120 volt thing is an abominable 'split-phase' hold-over from the old DC power distribution systems on the east coast (NY etc) 120 years ago. A wiring trick allows use of thinner 240vDC wiring for 120vDC applications without having to increase cable thickness to prevent overheating. When Westinghouse's AC finally conquered Edison's DC, they just continued to use the 120 split-phase architecture because it saved money on distribution wiring. (It also provides a high-current low-resistance path back to the distribution transformer so that individual panel circuit breakers can work.) Two hot legs (L1 and L2) coming into a premises are 240 volts (AC) apart, wired to opposite ends of a distribution transformer. But there is also a third 'neutral' wire which is connected all the way back to the distribution transformer, and connected to the center of the transformer's wiring. 120 volts AC is between L1 and the neutral center-tap, or L2 and the neutral center-tap. But you still have 240 volt L1 to L2 just like NZ/AUS, who decided to ignore the split-phase center-tap silliness before it ever started. So it would be simpler and make more sense to wire for 240 volts for euro-land, the americas, and NZ/AUS. Then just use the 240 L1 and L2 when visiting the US, ignoring the 120v neutral for power. I have many power tools that use that standard arrangement, as 120v is too weak for the motors. The main problem then would be if a marina 'pre-splits' the 240 for you at their distribution panel because they were cheap characters, so you only can see either L1 to neutral or L2 to neutral. However that's seldom a problem with high-wattage/high-amperage service because 240v is needed for it anyway. A Nema 14-50 plug and receptacle has 4 conductors, for L1, L2, split-phase 'neutral' and ground (earth) respectively. It's typical for a US electric cooking range or clothes dryer. You connect that shore power to your boat service panel and just use L1, L2 and the ground (earth) conductors as needed, just like somebody in the US using a welding machine. Or invert from your DC store to 240v, using 240v applicances. Easy-peasy, no messing with split-phase.

@@armslength2618 thank you for the lesson, truly. So, if you were to buy a boat you'd buy it in Europe or NZ/Aus to make sure you got the electrical layout you mentioned? And you'd encourage the Wynns to do likewise?
@armslength2618
@armslength2618 2 жыл бұрын
 @Stephanie Ellis Third, like the second but using an on-board diesel Onan generator or modern welding generator (Miller Bobcat -200kgs ) with power conditioner if needed, when underway. That will save on battery weight and expense and volume. Batteries mostly only for critical navcom instruments backup. Fourth, have a specialty hybrid system with a DC core bus that replaces the battery bank for most purposes. All sorts of input AC can be rectified into DC and dumped onto that bus. Then power is immediately taken from it and inverted again into any form you need with any number of inverters. Feedback from DC current level to control supply to control power flow, with a high-speed battery or capacitor bank to buffer the bus current. That's the principle behind modern portable generators like the Honda eu2200i, and industrial motor control VFDs (variable frequency drive). This core system provides all the compatibility needed to various inputs and outputs. An added complication is 3-phase shore power, where 480 volts and all 3 phases are provided, or 208 volts between two conductors is provided. 3-phase is great stuff but rare in small craft. You'd need your own distribution transformer on board or 3-phase appliances to use it. 208 volts is kinky, rare and any appliances would have to be explicitly rated to deal with it.

In building wiring, it's common to have all black wires over a certain size, because they are not manufactured in other colors. In face, US building code (NEC) requires these wires to be "identified" with colored tape, paint, some kind of permanent marking that they are not the "hot" or positive side. If I were pulling these all around a boat, I'd try to tape them where possible and visible for future reference.

Looong time lurker, first time writer. IF you ever decide to replace the wires running from the batteries to the bus bars then I suggest this. Make sure all wires are the same length even if you have to roll the shorter runs up. Even copper wire has some resistance. When you start drawing 150 amps the draw will come from the path of least resistance. This will over work one battery, shortest run, faster. On low draw sources this isn't an issue but power hungry appliances and more boats running electric drive motors the more this issue comes into play. Love your channel, attitude, and how you show your life with positivity. Keep up the great videos!

Are you using 240 volt ac or 115 ac on that mains lead, of course its half the current on 240 volts. I try to limitate as many as I can and sort of joints in wiring, as it always ends up failing when warmed up. Anyway, I enjoy your blogs on youtube, keep it up. P
