They are supposed to do due diligence. The problem is international politics. It's a hassle and can take years to get the information needed from places like the middle east or North Korea. Even China deals can be different to verify. I know a billion dollar steel importer from China to the US. You have to place your orders two years in advance and the manufacturing company won't even talk to you during some parts of the year. Like they ghost you for months every year just for Chinese new year and other "holidays" . Deals at that level are handshakes and promises that can stretch on for a long time before money starts moving around. I know some of the supply chain for a major hardware store in particular that's still trickle selling nuts and bolts being delivered from a deal that started 10+ years ago. The operation is large enough that the logistics of moving billions of dollars worth of screws to distribute across thousands of stores takes years of planning and 1000s of employees. If a rep from that company offers you a good deal, you might not be able to visit China, inspect the supply chain and verify the offer for months, if ever. And your expected delivery might be 2+ years before the freighter comes. Global supply chains operate on a lot of trust and shady deals with companies in parts of the world that can be difficult to access and verify. But at that scale that's just how things work in some industries. There's a lot of room for "fake it till you make it" and the successful ones can start a sale chain before they even secure a supplier. The downside is if they don't eventually follow through, they either end up in prison for fraud, or assassinated quietly in "an accident" because they crossed the wrong person. And that's all I can say on a public forum.

dunno man, at least Ponzi kept the scam going by moving money around by actually getting more people in creating an illusion that there was something going on. This guy DUPED the world basically by silver tonguing promises of money made out of smoke in exchange for very tangible stuff. Imagine you are selling computers, and then some guy fresh out of jail for robbery tells you he'll pay three times the price for them next week if you allow them to take the computers because he's got bad credit and banks won't grant them credit of any kind. Of course you would say no. This guy basically did that at large, and not only you give the equipment away trusting his word, but you also granted him half of your house. @@DrBarbequeSauce True enough. My reasoning was merely that the initial idea of the IRCs was actually a legitimate form of arbitrage. So Ponzi's scheme could legitimately make money. It was merely the amounts required that made it insane. Perhaps every good lie has a small bit of truth to it. I think there are better examples like Frank Abignale (stealing millions with check fraud) or Victor Lustig (selling people the Eiffel Tower and conning Al Capone. Even more suspiciously, these ex prostitutes become fervent God followers with disdain for everyone still living in sin (incidentally all of these people are young women with high value)! He isn't the greatest conman who ever lived. The greatest conman, by definition, is unknown. EDIT: By "unknown" I obviously don't mean that he's unknown as a person but the con is still unregognized. Anyone whom everyone knows to be a conman is already a failed one.

It won't happen until all potential court proceedings have been resolved, sentences passed, and all possible appeals exhausted. Rule 1 of KZfaq ought to be don't speculate in depth on outstanding legal cases as there's the risk of contempt of court. Reporting from a courtroom on proceedings is generally safe unless a judge orders otherwise. Plus, you don't want the defendant trying to sue you over your musings if nothing as yet has been proven. Equally, you don't want to be the cause of a mis-trial. Merely my thoughts. Others may prove my ramblings to be nonsense. 😊

I believe that the greatest conman on earth will never be fully revealed, even after his/her passing away. However, one aspect that surprised me about this guy was his lack of covering traces. He could have easily gotten away with it by concealing his tracks and securing a safe spot from all those shenanigans. But given his preference for "no public displays," I don't think this will be the last time he gets involved in such activities. It seems to be more related to the thrill he experiences rather than solely seeking success.
