The inverter upgrade is one of the many changes we have to make with the battery shelf coming online soon. The existing 3kVA inverter is not enough to deliver all the energy from our 45kWh battery.
I wanted to upgrade to a Victron Phoenix inverter which we can parallel later to increase the power output. Springers Solar didn't haven one in stock and send the Multiplus II as a free upgrade. The Multi has some really cool features which I cannot use right now. Should I keep it anyway?

Absolutely keep it! In fact, keep the MP2, sell off the old inverter and put the $$ towards a 2nd MP2 and enjoy have 10Kva at your disposal. You’ll need it down the track. If you install x2 inverters now you won’t need to change your wiring in the future

Great inverter. You can actually daisy chain the Multiplus II after the Phoenix. Connect the Phoenix on the input of the Multiplus II and the Multiplus II will be able to supplement the power if the Phoenix doesn't have enough capacity.

Keep the free upgrade Andy! Looking forward to "experience sharing" of the new inverter. Those features sound very similar to the MPP Solar/voltronic power infinisolar V2 hybrid inverter, but it has solar charge controller and grid tie feed in the inverter itself along with all the usual features like AC charger, parallel, communication at a fraction of the victron price. I don't know how they do it. Anyways that inverter won't satisfy local requirements for grid tie I guess, but still worth a mention.

Andy, As a Solar installer I can tell you the MP2 is a very robust unit. However it does have a flaw that I don't like. The A/C input is a push style connector and not a screw type. Using a ferrule on the end of the wire does help inserting the wire but it don't crush to give you a full wire contact. Bare wire is harder to insert. But has a much better contact area. I wish they would of used the screw style terminal on the MP2 like they did on other models.

Keep the Multi Plus, if you can't spend out initially just split the loads across the inverters and then later you can sell the Phoenix to buy the next MultiPlus. Or perhaps see if the supplier would be willing to do a trade-in on the Phoenix now to upgrade your system sooner rather than later?

And maybe Victron should donate a second multiplus II ( it would allow you to create a master/slave arrangement, more complex wiring diagrams, trial your domestic installation, etc ). You could use the Phoenix inverter to create a mobile power Although you have solar close to your house a mobile source with more power and capacity than a Bluetti might prove useful. I have used a Multi plus with 29.5kwh battery in a small camping trailer to do this. I am in the process of building a second one so that energy can be moved and is always available much like having two batteries in a cordless drill. This is important to me as my solar array is about 1.5km away from my house.

Yeah, I know... many people have questioned that. 3kVA is workable for what I use the system for as I can shift loads so they don't run at the same time. But now with the larger battery coming online soon, I want to see how far I can get with a larger inverter. And the Multiplus may be capable to use the smaller inverter as its input AC power so we can piggyback them. That would be an interesting project.

Keep the Multiplus 2. With it you can add PV Panels with Micro invertes. So everywhere you‘ve got power and want solar just add 1-4 panels with a microinverter. The microinverter must sense power frequenzy und if it goes above 50.2 Hz the inverter must start to reduce output. Obove 51.5 Hz at 50% reduced output they must shut down. The norm that sets this is the VDE-AR-N 4105 in Germany.

AAAA Andy 14:00 minute: Yes you can feed 5000VA Multi with 3000VA Phoenix to have 8000VA. The 3000VA Phoenix is just 3000VA "non-gasoline" generator. Put it on input (L1-in) and then use transfer switch and power assist of 5000VA Multi with set up to to 2x power assist and that input is capable only 10A ;) Just don't couple it with AC/coupled solar, because Multi will think that there is grid power and push it out. But! There is also a possibility to use current measurement inside or external and set multi to not export to grid (keep amps on 0 on that current measuremet) and then there is some possible way to even keep ac coupled solar, two inverters and not pay for another 5000VA Multi..
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
That is a fantastic idea!!! Will this work or just making a lot of magic smoke and a brilliant video? I can set the multi to zero export with a meter or current sensor as you said. But yeah, for the next few years I won't be connecting the AC solar. It needs to feed in 😉
@servisfibris6679
@servisfibris6679 2 жыл бұрын
@@OffGridGarageAustralia DC and AC are isolated on both devices to my knowledge, so there should be no smoke.. You can't connect them in PARALEL as they can not sync, even different models of Multi can't be operated in PARALEL. But serializing them is possible :) There is also a small problem - you can not use whole capacity of inverter as they can provide overload currents for few seconds. This is not possible as you set fixed current on input. But longterm inverting is possible. Another thing that you may take into account is that when Phoenix is overheated, it will provide less AC current, so if you set 10A on input of Multi+ and you have Phoenix over 40°C it will shut down - this can be another reason to not fully use 10A capacity of your Phoenix..

Well short description... Can we program this Victron multiplus II as below situations all in togather... 1) When ever the load in more (> 15Ah in AC out put), it will take the help from grid for the additional load ( Total load 26Ah, 15Ah from battery & rest from grid) 2) Battery charge function off always from grid 3) If battery voltage drop below from defined voltage (like 48V DC), it will continue the load from Grid 4) If the battery charge state is > 50%, it will fully use battery only for load for Grid available and not available condition
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Biswajit. 1) Yes, that is possible. The Multi always uses solar and battery power first as much as possible before using any power from the grid. 2) the internal charging function can be completely disabled 3) Yes, that also a standard feature. If the battery is low it uses solar and grid power to power your load. 4) It will use solar and battery power as much and long as possible and only uses the grid if there is not enough power to supply your load.

I think people are more likely to want a Multiplus, even if you don't need the extra features. In otherwords, there is a bigger audience that wants to see you implement a system using this.
@OffGridGarageAustralia

Yes, definitely. The Multiplus is the way to go and I think this is the reason there is a shortage for the Phoenix inverters, Victron wants to push the Multi. It would make sense to have only one device instead of several ( Multi, Phoenix and Quattro).

Keep the MultiPlus II! You'll use the features eventually. Keep the old inverter as a spare, or even use it to power another fuse box with specific loads.
@danielardelian2

List price difference is 37 EUR + tax, about 60 AUD + tax. Keep the Multiplus-II ! PS1: The Multiplus-II does NOT have built-in solar charging. You still need an external MPPT for that. The complete solution is the EasySolar-II (includes an inverter, MPPT, GX managing and monitoring device). PS2: The bus between parallel / 3-phase Victron inverters is called VE.Bus and I'm pretty sure the underlying technology is RS-485, not CAN. They do have CAN products, but those are different.

hi Andy. keep it, of course. In the other hand, you mentioned a very interesting feature (emulating a grid). If I understood well, and this inverter is able to do so, you can connect an aditional "on grid" inverter since this type of inverters need to sense the grid´s voltage wave to mimic the power to be supplied (no grid= no power even if you have full of sun in the panels). In this case you can have electricity supply even in case of the grid is off. I think it is a nice feature and some interesting to show in a future video.... ;-)
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's exactly the third feature I was talkig about in the video. Even in an off-grid installation, you can still use your grid-tied inverters and solar. Only a few inverters will work this way though as they need to react to the frequency shifting of the Multi. Also, there is a rule that the AC coupled solar cannot exceed the inverter power, so 5kW of solar can be connected to a 5kVA inverter, but not more AC solar. More info here: www.victronenergy.com/live/ac_coupling:start#:~:text=In%20both%20grid%2Dconnected%20and,3.000%20Wp%20installed%20solar%20power.

Yes, serial connection is great option for such offgrid solution. Phoenix first and then multiplus in series. You can also make simple control mechanism which will switch off the phoenix in the case there is no huge power needed. Phoenix standby consumption is reduced then: a) You can use Multiplus assistant to control the multiplus relay based on output power. b) The venusOS is publishing actual power on mqtt topic /Ac/Out/L1/P and by simple low pass filter added to this measure you can switch the phoenix on/off using Multiplus controll relay and have more complex scenarios covered. Node-red is good for start. c) Check the ESS documentaion for further applications. They state ESS is not intended for off-grid solution but in your case it should work perfectly. I assume the multiplus relay will be connected to the phoenix on/off control input.

@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
The house produces around 22-25kWh on a good summer day and around 10kWh in winter when the sun is a bit lower. The roof points to the east so it's not optimal and there are also large trees which cause shading in the morning and during winter time. Export in Summer: 13kWh per day Export in Winter: 7.5kWh per day The solar on the house takes up around 20% of the available roof space, so there is more potential...

If the old inverter has enough power to supply the garage, pool pump, and vehicle I would keep it connected to those circuits separately and add the new inverter to power additional loads including the house. That is what I plan to do with my current Genetry Solar 6K inverter when the GS 12K becomes available. The 12K will power the majority of the house but the 6K will be powering the water heater, well pump and back garage.

And because if you buy another Multiplus at the moment is not necessary because you can't connect the house to the garage at the moment do to the AC couppling.
