This is the first real test of the battery shelf and the PowerWall together. We are turning the Multiplus on for the very first time. Will it work and can it deliver? We're not mucking around much and doing the high power extreme test right away. With 33°C ambient temperature we're trying to pull as much power as we can: pool pump, vehicle charging all at once on full power. With 5.8kW and over 110Amps from the battery, this is insane!
The FLIR camera unveils the weak points of our system.
The Multiplus is fantastic inverter and does a great job. I was never able to charge the Tesla that quickly.

You could have a two battery switch there, but instead of two batteries, you could have Y-connection from the one battery to the switch and the other line could include the pre-charge resistor. Then it would be possible to keep it for 30 seconds for example on 'battery 1' that has also the resistor, then switch to 'battery 2' that would make the same connection, but without the resistor. Sounds good, ja? Really nice to watch also these older videos, I usually watch all the new videos as soon as I spot there is a new release. Looking fantastic 😀⭐😀⭐ And as for those clamp meters....I too got 1 18mts ago, would get another tomorrow there a great bit of kit for the price (mainly coz it does DC power alot only do AC like all my fluke gear). Looking forward to seeing the two inverters been contacted and if you can get them talking to each other.

I bought a switch for 2 batteries. The positions are 1, 1&2, 2 and off. I use postition 1 for pre load and then switch past 1&2 to postition 2.

I realy enjoy your program very much I understand a fair amount about DC POWER but have learned such a lot from you that I did not know and I se you are like me a perfectionist there is only a right way thank you wish I could come and see in-person but that's not possible I am in South Africa and also equipment and accessories are hard to get and cost a arm and a leg thanks looking forward to see the next video

Andy. You can move the master cutoff switch to the left so it is in line with the plastic trunking there is sufficient space behind the switch to run two 70mm2 cables. on continuous and one via switch terminals. Especially if you rotate the switch body so that the terminals are top and bottom, not left and right. You can do the same when you connect the second inverter. We have just fitted a Multiplus compact to our boats lithium set up and are going through the Raspberry pi set up at the moment. A video will follow....... We will give you a shout out. 😁 Great videos.! Ant & Cid. 👍

Hi Andy, On your last video I mentioned in the comments on my system I have the same Isolator switch but the 2 position. Position 1 is a resistor for pre charging the inverter and position 2 is full connected.

I have the black version of the switch. You can break out the backing panels, and or move the switch relative to the backing plate. Suggest you mount the resistor on back of switch terminal, the Bluesea switch that is, and mount a small ptm switch on one of those panels.

Congrat, Bravo! Great moment. For precharging you can add an additional thin wire, a momentary button and a resistor. And yes the Multis' fans sound like a grinder or like a marine engine? I have a small 800VA Multi and it also sounds strange..

We have built a pre-charge button before in the other battery and it worked great. That was a community suggestion as well. So I will see if it is actually necessary to have one at all...

You can actually do remote programming on the victron stuff as long as your internet router and your raspberry are all on DC power because the inverter sometimes turns off and back on depending on the settings you change

The Pi runs from a DC converter directly from the battery and not from the inverter. I know it needs to stay online during firmware updates of the inverter so had this already in mind in my original design... 😉 But you don't get full access like through the VE-configure app, right?

They disconnect the link. There is a ground earth relay inside which is what is used to control the link.

It will disconnect the internal MEN before it connects to the grid. Only if no AC is present at the input it has this internal bonding for an off grid installation.

The AC output of the Multiplus is connected with 6mm cable. A 4mm would have been sufficient though but I had this already here. And with the overall output of the system of 8kVA it is the right size for my system.

For precharge - I'd use NH fuse disconnector in the battery box front panel and some button next to it and also eliminate the switch. That's what I use :) btw, beware when precharging Multiplus - if you don't have MP's switch in off position, that precharge won't last a single second and you will get big sparks.

Try jump wiring from the multiplus inverter + to the other smaller inverter + with the separate ( - ) cable if you want to turn both inverters on or off with one disconnect switch if it can handle the current . Otherwise this is a successful inverter hookup and load test project for the first . May the solar be with you .

be careful doing that as you will overload the cables and the circuit breaker and losses become a lot more

My understanding is that when the Phoenix is online it will provide all the inverter power and the multiplus will only provided inverter power once it reaches the input limit you set.

Nice Andy. It's very exciting. You may wish to check if your Unity multi-meter is fused, I don't think it is? Just a thought when checking high voltage/current situations.

Hi Andi! Great work, excellent channel. Congratulations for your achievements! ... And a small question: it seems that you use Noark circuit breakers rated 63 , between MPPTs and the + busbar. I wonder în this is right? A bit confused, as long as the output of each controller is rated 70 A. Am I wrong? Viel Erfolg!

Thank you. Yes, that is correct, 70A is the max output of the MPPTs and 63A is the breaker rating. I will reach 70A in the future at some stage when I upgraded the solar with more panels. At the moment I won't get more than 35/40A out of the controllers. Even with 70A output, the breakers will be fine as they won't trip immediately and 70A will be only for a short moment when the sun comes out behind clouds and the panels are cold. I'll expect having more like 50-60A max from each controller but we will see.

Andy, in regards to the precharge button... what about only placing 3 of 4 mounting screws in the Blue Sea Switch and using the remaining screw hole to mount the bypass button with some hot glue or epoxy?

So I know you can get "2 position" versions of the battery isolator switch you have. You could replace the switch with one of those and have a resistor between the terminals for position 1 & 2, then your output from the switch can be on position 2. When you turn it to position 1 it'll pre-charge the inverter because of the resistor bridging the terminals, and then switch it to position 2 to fully connect. Then it's all in the same switch which is a little cleaner. The only trouble is that most of these isolators have the "off" position between position 1 & 2 so you'd have to turn anticlockwise to pre-charge then clockwise to connect which is less intuitive. I have seen some where off is the most anticlockwise position, then 1 is in the middle, followed by 2 so you only have to turn the switch one way but they are much harder to source.

This is exactly what i did, my switch has off at the bottom, the 1 on the left, the 2 on the right and both 1 and 2 combined on the top. the precharge is at the 1 position, so i can switch from the precharge, to the combined and from there to the 2 position, thats the load. to turn it off it goes from the 2 position to off. very nice to see people doing the same.^^

Thanks Philip. That's a great tip. The question is though, do we need to pre-charge at all? It is nowhere mentioned in any manual, design or the specs that you have to do that in a stationary system.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia you could probably get away with it if your supply components can handle the inrush current (I think it's safe to say yours can) and you don't mind replacing the switch in a few years if the spark erodes the contacts. There are a few things online that say uncontrolled inrush current can damage the capacitors in the power supply/inverter, or at least shorten their service life. I'm not sure if this is true or one of those electronics theories that have negligible impact in most real life conditions 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'd probably play it safe and put a resistor in myself 😅

@@pingu99991 I seem to recall David Poz once killed a cheap inverter by not using a pre-charge resistor. But that may say more about the inverter than the process.

@@pingu99991 That is true: Capacitors have a maximum rating for inrush current. The problem zone is the contact between the external contact area and the internal current distribution. Capacitors might degrade over time or fail instantly depending on current surge. Usually there are several capacitors in parallel at the input circuit. If one capacitor degrads, others get even more stress and will fail soon after. So there is usually no sudden effect observable. Nevertheless it is wise to protect those capacitors.

I think if you put a 10w 10ohm resistor over the switch there is no need for a extra button. Because if you really want to turn it of completely you could just turn the braker off.

That would be bad design though. The resistor would burn out as it would constantly try to pre-charge the capacitors if the switch is off. It defeats the purpose of the switch if you bypass it with a resistor as you still would have 48V on the inverter input. The main breaker is for the whole system though and shuts everything off not just a single inverter.

I have powered my victron 1600W compact inverter from an inverter generator with no issues. So I don’t expect you will have any problems as it should sync to the smaller inverter

It was suggested in your last video that you mount a push button on the side of the switch with the resistor mounted within the back of the switch. This is what I did on my system so I know there is enough space.

Thanks, Nigel. So the button is mounted at the bottom part of the switch but the cables need to be connected to the switch itself. I'll have to have a look if this is somehow possible, sounds very tight space.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia It is a little tight but careful placing of the miniature p/b switch and resistor worked for me. Having the p/b on the most visible side of the switch is a good reminder to use it before operating the battery switch.

Are Victron inverters really needs precharge resistors at DC input? Telecom-grade ones have build-in starting/precharge circuits, for example.

That's the question I have asked in the next video (it's not out at this point). I never have seen any documentation from Victron saying you need to do that.

Use anti seize on all stainless threads or you’ll have galling and seized nuts. Dielectric grease doesnt work for anti gall. There are compounds that do both but hard to find. Aluminox on battery terminals

Why not add a small wire directly from the battery through a small push-button where you originally were going to mount one you could put a matching resistor in-line or choke to limit in-rush?

I'd hate to see that if it was hot. I live in the desert, so your high is not much above our high temperature today, ours is about 22 degrees C today, and it's February. Our summer highs are considerably higher. I think I am glad that I have sized everything to stay around 50%. Yes, fuses tend to get hot, you may need ventilation in the cabinet.

You are a savvy guy. Open the inverter and measure the fan's size. Look at the brand Noctua for fans. High CFM, VERY VERY quiet. They are used in PC's so are VERY quiet because of being indoors, etc. Swap that bad boy out. Odds are its 12 or 5V powered (sticker on the fan will be found with specs). The thing will be silent running with a good fan in it.

Hi I didn't want to worry you seeing the Noark fuses, but after this episode the quality of these fuses is no better than for single phase ones. I am already explaining what is going on, when building new production halls, in the company that works, we used these fuses. After some time it turned out that the fuse, for example, the 3F 20A fuse did not work properly, only the protection in the 3F 25A machine or bigger worked for thermal reasons. After examining most fuses with special gauges, it showed that the tolerance is 30% + sometimes even more. And the internal resistance of the fuses causes discoloration on the housing. I was hoping your fuses would work fine because sparks at 100 amps could cause a fire, which I don't want for you. It would be advisable to install a smoke detector in the wi-fi system at the very top of the cabinet (there are also those with protection against temperature, probably 80C and smoke)

It's in the manual and called MSX calibration. I have not bothered with that but can be calibrated in the settings. I have now done it.

Hi Andy, I assume that you used VE Configure 3 to configure the MP2 before running. This is important in my opinion. if not Victron has a very good comprehensive manual online.

Nope, not yet. The inverter runs like this out of the box. Configuration is only necessary if you have an AC-input and want to do more. Which we obviously want 😉

Aye Andy. More small Island advice for a big island man......use the other switch; the one that has 1; 2; Both 1 &2 and Off. I got this from off KZfaq. Put the resistor on 1 and put the inverter on 2. when you switch it on 1 the resistor will charge the capacitor. Then go back to off then go to 2 and leave it there to run the inverter. Thank some body on KZfaq. I did not come up with that.

I can concur about the fan noise. Both my original MplusII/48-5000, and my current MplusII/48-10000 have loud fans, not a nice hum noise either, almost sounds like bad bearings in a brand new fan. Squirrel cage fan would be better.

As per the Victron Community post, they seem to have fixed that with the latest update though. So this is already the 'quieter noise' apparently. Even in our hot climate the fan does not run as often as in the smaller inverter. I'm not too bothered at the moment as everything is installed in the garage and not the house.

Da nimmt man einfach einen ~20 Ohm Widerstand mit 5W und ueberbrueckt damit den Schalter fuer ein paar Sekunden. Dadurch fliest ein kleiner Strom in den Inverter was die Kondensatoren etwas vorlaedt und den grossen Funken verhindert den man sonst beim Einschalten bekommt.

Hi Andy, l watched all or videos some even few times. I like ur tests and reviews. I think u best person to ask l got multiplus 2 48v/5000 like You. When all loads disconnect showing about 18w consumption without loads with. 50w load showing 70w out from batteries that normal ?

Regarding hot ANL fuse: Please be aware that besids safe short circuit protection the characteristics of ANL vs. Mega is different. While ANL spec ends at 100seconds Mega specifies behaviour up to 1000 seconds. ANL fuses are known to run hotter at high load current. This fact might be caused by less contact surface or by different design of the fuse itself. It will ad some know-how to the commnity if you change the ANL fuse at your setup to Mega fuse of same rating. I bet it will run cooler than ANL in case of steady DC current. On other hand we should be aware that the short current interruption capability might be very different depending on type. For big battery main fuse I will use T-type fuses (160V / 20 KA)

I have an ANL fuse inside the old battery box but have Mega fuses in the battery shelf as per Victron recommendation for these inverters. Mega fuses have a lower resistance than any other fuse, hence less heat. Class-T fuses will work but I wanted to isolate the circuits (pos and neg).

They are certainly not the best (what is the best?). I absolutely love their flexibility and features, integration and total remote control. This is unmatched on the market! I have all Victron gear in my pocket on my mobile and can change ALL settings of all devices from anywhere.

Btw, Blue Sea systems stated that their switches are for 48 V max (12, 24 and 36 V systems) and should not be used in 48 V systems. With some safety margin, it should probably still work, but insurance company can have different view.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia Yes, I've seen it used in other installations, but it still isn't approved for this. It says 48 V MAX, not 48 V (system). It wasn't designed for 4x12V but for 36 V system. That information is directly from manufacturer. You can ask them yourself and you will get the same answer: """Our battery switches have a 48-volt Maximum rating. So typically, 12, 24- & 36-volt systems that would never exceed 48 volts. Our switches are not rated for 48-volt systems that will reach near 60 volts in some cases."""

As the switching is mainly done by the BMS the power switch on the positive side will only be used on setup and in emergency if the BMS fails on. The switch is obviously coping with occasional use and is mainly under stress during switching so should be OK if normally left on. I searched around to find a switch rated at 60v. Although I eventually found one it looks suspiciously like the Blue Sea switch. I have fitted it anyway and it seems to be OK in the short term.

Might only one precharge resistor at the main large circuit braker be enough? You don't change your setup every day...so yea ^^ But if you want to be extra, what about including the precharge resistor into your red switch...maybe on it's side or top?

In the documentation of this inverter I find the following parameter: power consumption at idle - 38W It is interesting whether for 24 hours this consumption is active and if there is a load it remains the same. Do the panels have to provide 24X38W= 912W every day just to run the inverter? It is interesting to me, if you make some measurements of this own consumption, that on certain days it may be more than the useful power that we have received.

For the pre-charge resistor, how about running a modest cable from the inverter to the cabinet and having your buttons there. Then you can have a cheap volt meter which describes the voltage difference between the pack and the inverter while doing the pre-charge? Maybe even an analogue volt meter so you can see the needle move across the face as the potential difference lowers? The you can have a control panel which has a flavour of an old power plant? Also I might have put those 600A switches the othe side of the trunk so the wire could cut the corner, it might be easier on the turns and allow you to have the switch position you wanted. Probably too late to change now?

@@OffGridGarageAustralia the bigger the battery, the bigger the inrush current potentially is. So, think as you expand, unless the inverter has a soft start, your putting strain on those switches at least.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia it forms a function of the internal resistance of the pack and the capacitors, but the caps will try and draw as much as they can from the source. If there's low ESR from the capacitors then they will draw huge current because the whole circuit will have a tiny resistance.

Andy, your temps are a bit concerning around fuses. I have large HRC fuses on my battery and never see over 40degrees - and i go over 110amps continuously for periods during the day.

You might be in a different climate? If you ambient temperature is already 40°C, the fuse will be a lot hotter already.

Question, you show a 100 amp circuit breaker set to 90 amps? But the next moment you draw over 110 amps for several minutes. Why didn’t the breaker trip? What am I missing here?

@@igorybema That would indeed explain why the inverter can take more. But I believe he was showing the amps the battery was supplying according to the bms. Could be that the values of the bms is a bit off.

That is only one part why the breaker didn't trip, You also need to look at the trip curve of such breakers. They can handle over current for a while until the thermal trip mechanism triggers. If there is a sharp increase in current, the magnetic mechanism trips the breaker. This is exactly the same behaviour as with normal MCBs in you house. BTW, the 100A NAL fuse didn't blow inside the battery box either even going over by 10%

@@OffGridGarageAustralia One thing I don't understand. During your tests it seems that the sun is shining on the PV panels. When you first enable the pool pump there is still about 2kW PV input from which 1kW goes to the pull pump. But as soon as you include the car charger, the PV input drops to 100Watt. From the video it still look sunshine outside.

dear andy... i searched today for the multiplus 2 48 5000 and it has no extra surge capability anywhere mentioned.... and the multiplus 2 3000 has 5500 mentioned . if 5000 is the limit then it is a bit low for its cost!!!! i know 5000.48 is a nice 50hz gentle beast but wouldnt it good if they installed any surge mode ? one more pcb with some coper and some capacitors .BUt i hope it has and i m not aware of !!

At 17:50 you mention a "35 mm link" within your battery. Do you mean that there is a 35 mm2 copper conductor between some of the cells? Is it sufficient to carry a current of more than 100 A? Your main battery conductors use a 70mm2 copper cables which should be fine for ~200 A. All of your battery cells are in series, if I understand correctly. So the current between the individual cells would be the same as the current in your main battery conductors.

This is in the old battery. It's the only 35mm cable ling at the end connecting one row to the other. This battery was fused at 100A so 35mm was OK for that. The inverter never pulled more than 65A anyway. That was max load I could connect to. The new batteries in the shelf will have 35mm cable again to connect to the BMS and breaker. The breakers for each bank is set to 80A. This 35mm cable is rated for 120A so there is still a bit of margin.

@@elmer665544 I have very much respect of this system I build there and would not work in this top bus bar section under live conditions. Hence I was so picky with the acrylic cover. I have no problem with working on 48V battery when there is enough space around it but up there... that's offline work only

hey i just got some great new info from QSO 304ah batts. i have one that just stripped out easy so i ask can it be tapped larger safely. they said yes from m6 to m8 max. they also said don't go deeper. this was all said by amy. also they have the 304 with laser welded with studs. real sexxy.

Thanks for sharing. I have 16 of the laser welded 304Ah cells incoming for the new shelf. I will just use a 1/4" UNC imperial set screw for my stripped terminal. No re-threading or Helicoil needed.
