the dumbest thing about the double is that you can easily put spin on a ball without actually doubling. just put more pressure on one side or even rotate both your arms still touching and leaving the ball at the same time...

I disagree. Not without spinning/rotating your hands in a weird way. I’d more likely say the opposite and say that most every set is a double if you look at it from a close enough perspective. How often is every point of contact on the ball going to release at the exact same time?
@jaquino31

As a ref, using spin to determine a double contact is a pretty old concept. It’s now emphasized NOT to use spin as a factor in calling a double contact although I do know a few refs that still do. As a coach, I hope this change trickles down to club and interscholastic leagues to take some of the subjectivity out of these calls and promote play.
@codelapiz

Who is the ref to pretend he can tell a 0.5cm difference from when the two points on the different hands hit. he can't. the only thing he knows for sure is everything is a double on the right scale. so why is he sitting there saying 0.5cm is not ok, but 0.1mm is. you eigther put the limit at: - anything above 0 (you cant, then every touch on the ball is a fault) - somewhere defined in the rules - where it is close to giving an unfair advantage. I get that they should call an intentional double made to fake a set by putting so much spin it goes down to the opponent's side. But there is nothing to gain from setting unevenly. putting unpredictability or spin, or anything that makes the ball less readable will harm your teammate more than the opponent every time. Not to mention you will lose accuracy. The only reason this change hasn't been made yet is that coaches and more experienced players want to help less experienced players avoid developing bad technique

As a vball coach and player at open level - I like these changes. I would love for the NCAA rules to trickle down because league play would be so much nicer without people calling for doubles or complaining about them. The only real change I can see as a high level setter though is that the freedom of not having an issue with doubling will allow setters to go for some more risky sets that they might not have gone for with the fear of a double. Being able to shoot to the outside or right side from an unfavorable position with a double/spin can give setters more opportunities to setup a 1-1 or a no block situation. Its not *bad* but it definitely is a new dynamic if you don't have to worry about the call. Overall - good setting will still be better and it just further emphasizes that every player needs to learn how to set! Even if they double sometimes ;)

I used to play volleyball many years ago. I don't mind this rule change, The rule change that ruined it for me was rally scoring. I am old enough that I played back when you could only score on your own serve. Switching to scoring on every point makes no sense and it ruined it for me. Unfortunately, I am in the minority on this and there is no going back now.

Love that you brought up that fact that doubling gives you zero advantage. As a coach that has always been my argument against the rule. For something to be considered a violation that rewards the opposing team, you should at least gain some advantage from that action.

Yeah, I was surprised to see so much outrage. The fact that refs have been calling penalties based on what they think happened due to the spin of the ball, rather than what they actually saw happen is pretty insane. Also, as you pointed out, there was no advantage to double setting. There were people who were upset about changing scoring to the rally system instead of only scoring points on your own serve, but it's made the game so much faster paced and better to watch. I think in time, we'll look back on this rule and think the changes were for the best.

I remember when calling a lift for a ball rolling on the arms during a hard spike hit or a top spin serve was removed. It is a good example of the rules changing to accommodate the growth of the game and allowing for more continuous play. As a former setter, I have experienced how different settings techniques can affect how a referee calls lifts, holds and doubles. I agree that ambiguous or arbitrary rules should be changed to ensure fair play and equality. I think the most skilled individual and team will continue to be the most successful because they will always be better at making points.

This is a great change when the players and teams are at comparable skill levels. E.g. college, older club age groups, etc. The downside is when a well-trained team in a younger age group competes against low skilled team. The skilled team is at a more of a disadvantage when less rules are applied. (Goes for all sports)

Several years ago, when I was in college, we had pick-up volleyball games during lunch, consisting of both students and faculty. We often had problems with a double contact on 2-handed sets, and since we officiated ourselves, that led to many arguments. So, we experimented with our own rule ... only one-handed sets were allowed. That makes for an interesting game.

Only when I absolutely perfectly get a ball at the perfect angle do I have absolutely no spin. So I've avoided wanting to learn setting. But too bad this rule change don't apply here in Australia XD

It will invariably lead to new "techniques" where the contact is intentionally a multiple hit in order to do things with the ball you can't do legally now. Those may drastically change the game, or not. The fact that it only applies to sets and not plays across the net is good in that regard. Whether it is a net positive remains to be seen after it has been in use for a couple of years.

I've been a setter between 1990 and 2000 and I received the most crazy balls to set. Even setting when recovering the ball from defense, super fast. The physics: one light touch to the ball will keep it spinning and change directions to where you want it to go. Unless you want to make your hands knuckles super rigid for the long run. I played for the CITY team and was not called double touching ever. When I moved to another school during that time, I was always called double touching. People would say I was carrying, double touch, whatever you can name. So I decided to stop playing. I had a very strong serve, good defense and excel sets, but ridiculous people judging the ball spinning to tell a double touch was the last straw.

I hope this change propagates down to the lower levels. I play in a beginner level rec league, and some of the refs are extremely strict about calling doubles if there is any spin on the ball. At our skill level, it's really discouraging for people that are new to the game or new to setting.

A great change! Imagine if football had rules where refs penalized quaterbacks for throwing footballs without a perfect spin. That's basically what this rule was. It made no sense. The penalty for not throwing perfectly is, well, exactly that: You didnt throw the football perfectly and now it'll be harder for the catcher to catch. Just like the penalty for doing a less-than-perfect set will be that it's harder for the hitter to hit. The refs don't need to be involved in that interaction at all.

Well the issue starts when you call double contact based on spin. You can bump set/pass a ball and make it spin. You can hit a ball, whether serve or attack and make it spin. None of those can be double contacts. It follows that spin should not be a deciding factor when judging double contact in a setting action. You can double contact without spin, you can spin without double contact.

I mostly agree with your opinion, I think that this rule could help lower levels of volleyball, but the reality (at least in Spain and Denmark) is that the reffs are more relaxed in the lower levels. Also, imo doubling can have a positive impact on the team making the "fault", as you can push and do riskier sets that you might not try with harsher rules. Again, you can be positive to this change, as it could bring more spectacle to the game. But I think that benefiting bad receptions (probably coming from good serves/spikes) is not a good thing.

4:15- The Refs are suppose to call to the action itself, not the outcome. The outcome is only to assist the ref in what they saw. Ref's are just getting more lazy which is why it has become a serious issue. 2 notes*** if the ref thinks he saw a double hit and outcome had little to no spin then the odds of a double hit were non-existent. By the same token, if it looked clean and had some spin it was most likely clean. My back sets all had some spin on them everytime if the ref thinks he saw a double and there is spin on the ball then it was a double, or if no spin a very lucky second hit.

The point of the old rule, was not to limit the game flow or entertainment. It has always been about limiting the number of contacts per side. 3 is the magic number. Just like with the change of the first-contact rule introduced years ago, there is always a slippery slope. Will it now be legal to contact the ball with one hand and then one foot? Where is the line between a “double” and a player contacting the ball twice in a row, which is still illegal. It’s still a judgment call. Bad rule changes due to a loss of skills training across the board doesn’t make for better volleyball.

I only know about this sport beacuse of Haikyuu, even as a noob, I think you explained it well and I agree, rules shouldn't be so confusing for refs to call when every point could cost the game, let players play, have fun, may the best players win, stop with the over technicality of rules and ref calls. Also, it is crazy to think doubling the ball won't happen when setters will be tired in longer games, perfection being required every set is insane. JUST ASK KAGEYAMA!

In the Netherlands this rule is already in place. Works just fine. The only downside is that the ref can allow a double based on the situation ( difficult/bad pass, or setter has to work very hard to set a bal). Now that is pretty subjective and therefore not always clear for the players. However a second ball over the net into the other field must be played correctly. No double touch allowed.

I agree, but Ive been taught as a ref myself, that a spinning ball has NEVER been a direct sign for a double contact. I personally have pretty much consitent sets, but my left arm is a bit stronger in some sets (im right handed lol) and therefore even at the same time of contact with different strengh it applies a bit of spin to many balls i play. Have i often been called out for a double? Hell nah. Do i play 3rd League? Hell nah. But i think the rule change should be good for you women over there and i wish you a great day and good recieves.

As a ref I call 99% of my doubles on non-setters. Watch the hands-first to see if the ball was touched twice then verify with a spin but even then be 100% sure before blowing it down. I've watched clean handsets and then looked at the ball to see a forward spin, that is not a double but most times it is called a double. I know this because when I don't call it, I hear from the fans, coaches, and players, "It's a Double"! LOL. So This new rule will be one less thing on our plates to police and I'm all for that. Keep the ball moving.

When a player can't get under the ball and kicks it up to keep it in play, it could come out spinning. Why allow that if they don't allow setters double contact, it really isn't making that much of a difference. This rule was basically penalizing the other players who aren't the main setter, and their out of system set isn't as clean.

If the intent is to be more forgiving on an attempted set, why does it allow contact "more than once with any part of the body in a single attempt on a team's second contact when the ball is played to a teammate." Under this rule a player could pancake an errant pass, not make another move and have the ball go up in the air and bounce off their head, then another teammate could play the ball over. It's a far fetched example and not likely, but now legal if the second player only made a single attempt at the ball. The rule should have directly addressed an attempted set, which is the cited problem, not expanded to "any part of the body."

As a long-time coach, from NCAA D1 Men's to currently coaching girl's club, I can see both sides of it, I hate the loss of aesthetics, the beauty of a Dusty Dvorak or Bebeto (Brazil) set, was something to behold. But, as someone who refereed HS for a few years, I wish this had happened throughout the sport back then. Trying to set the ball handling level was nearly impossible at times. Do you whistle a team with bad mechanics off the court (nothing worse for everybody to end every point with a ball-handling call)? Are you penalizing the better team if you don't do it? I never favored a team. I called what I saw. But, because I worked for one club, parents/coaches, whose athletes played for a different club, swore that I favored my club's players in ball-handling decisions. I liked making the extra $ but, in the end, the emotional tension wasn't worth it. Removing the subjective decisions on ball-handling would have made it so much better. The ONLY reason for officiating is for no team to gain an unfair advantage, period. The job of an official would be so much easier if all levels would remove subjective ball-handling decisions.

A "perfect" set is so easy to hit wherever you want. Doubles and spins are a mess to work with. A spinning set is essentially a carry so a setter adding spin is still a foul. I am fine with eliminating the foul for double contact on second touch unless it crosses the net. I still believe setters should train to be perfect because that will make the best offensive success. Bad sets throw off timing, sacrifices accuracy and forces hitters to adjust footwork, shoulder placement and impact angle. A sweet set rises like a shining full moon radiating angels rays pointing towards all the possibilities.

I understand that there is a different in calling a double touch (literally when you have two different points of contact) but calling a ball because it has spin never really felt right to me.

Frankly I believe that if you put a high speed camera on those finger sets all players in the last 20 years have been carrying the ball.Just watching I say its easy to see.Big reason Volleyball ranks right up their with Curling.Well aside from the bathing suits the sport would be dead.No setting with your fingers and watch the sport flourish.Why this has not been addressed is criminal.

3:45 not to be a massive nerd but the earth doesn't spin too fast. It takes 24 hours to make a full rotation.

Being a referee, you are wrong in saying that it is a call based on results of an action. Are there some referees that call doubles based on spin, yes. But most do not. I would never call based on spin, but rather, when I actually saw a double contact. Most of my USAV referees do the same. We are well trained and work hard to make consistent calls. If this rule change is based on inconsistent calls, then there is a training issue and not a skill issue.

Give it enough time and you will be the one who laments the changes in this game. You say evolve, I see more evidence that it is devolving. But, I still love the game and will not complain about the changes, since I can't do anything to influence them. Just wondering what the next part of the game will become victim to these "evolutions"? Will the dish from the knees become acceptable? Like your comments, keep them coming.

Yet they allow people coming under the net...(yes, stepping on the line & over) b/c it allows more entertaining play. Lol... straight up dangerous play in my book, and for what?

It needs to be incorporated all the way down. You can't hold the younger club, juniors and high school to a higher standard than NCAA.

I STRONGLY disagree with “the game of volleyball is evolving!” Comment. As a player for 40 years the sport required you to put in the effort to play at a high competitive level. Now sideout is pointless, it only forces a team to rotate rather than earn the serve so you could EARN points. Since I’m talking about serving how about hitting the net on your serve… if you’re LUCKY it rolls over the net , before luck wasn’t a factor (just saying). And now let’s dumb the game down even more by not requiring the setter to be capable of using two parts of their body (ie left and right hand) as 1???? What’s next if you make a bad pass and the ball bounces off your arms and hit hoping the chin that’s ok?! I watch my kids playing this game now and the level of play has fallen off a LOT. From a fan point view… these rules aren’t making it more enjoyable. From a player perspective why try, when someone with less talent can do the same as someone who practices and plays as much as possible? EXPECT skill, REQUIRE skill… the game wasn’t broke until the “fixed” it

The spinning of the ball is just for animated flair. Adds a little more motion on the screen. It would look weird for the set to not move as it traveled - at least in animation it would.
