Paradise residents discuss their determination to rebuild. At Jose and Anna’s, Tom inspects engineered siding and fire-rated sheathing. Richard looks at a solar backup battery. Former Paradise fire chief discusses advanced preparation with Kevin. At the Hope Plaza Memorial ground-breaking, the heroes and survivors are honored. Luke and Crystal celebrate moving in.

Kevin recaps the horrific day the Camp Fire spread through Paradise and hears from the residents who are determined to rebuild.
Tom visits Jose and Anna’s house, where builder Ken Blanton shows him engineered siding with a fire-rated sheathing, which combined meets the WUI building codes.
The failure of a power line was the apparent cause of the fire that destroyed Paradise. To prevent that from happening again the power company turns off the power to any community facing a high fire risk. Home generators are in short supply but Richard is at Joe and Avonlea’s house where new technology is solving the problem.
Evacuations in Paradise happened with very little notice. Experts recommend that homeowners prepare in advance for emergencies by packing a “Go Bag”. Jim Broshears, the former Fire Chief of Paradise shows Kevin what goes in his Go Bag.
It’s been a year since ashes covered the ground in this beautiful town in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Today is a special day as the survivors follow the ritual of any great undertaking. They will cement their determination to rebuild with a ceremonial groundbreaking at a memorial site. Here they honor the hundreds who ran towards the flame to save others and to those they could not reach.
Luke and Crystal filed one of the first building permit applications after the fire. Family, neighbors, builders and other the homeowners come to visit and celebrate their move in day.

To rebuild existing or new construction in a fire zone (determined by proximity to woodlands & grasslands) should be required to be built of mason block, steel wall frames, iron roof truss, corrugated iron decks, metal roofing and aluminum windows. It will cost a lot more but in perspective to value of land and insured values (subsidized by people who insure their low-risk homes in distance or government rebuild subsidies. If the envelope of the home is too expensive then let the buyers choose to pay those incremental costs over smaller footprints or choose to build elsewhere. If you can’t afford to build a McMansion in a high-risk fire zone, then you should build a 25oo sf home in that location.

I like the territory you covered over the 3 episodes. The 1 hour fire rated roof shingles, the fire coated siding, the importance of keeping fire fuels away from the house siding. The are a a lot of videos about Urban Interface Fires and the safe zone around a house on you tube. Everyone not already burnt out should check the videos out, a little excersise program now will save the house later.

That fire rated siding looks expensive. Too expensive for many of the burned out residents of Paradise, California planning on rebuilding. It will take decades for the trees to grow back after the 2018 Camp Fire. In other words, guarding the hen house after the fox has been there.
@scotttovey
@scotttovey 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe Paradise will make it a point to manage their forest now regardless of state laws that may forbid it. After all, they only need to keep the brush cut back and insure they have proper fire stop areas which will be easier to maintain given the fact that they are dealing with new growth rather than needing to cut trees down that insane environmentalists will protest against.

Many homeowners' policies offer coverage for code upgrades that have been put into place since the original home was lost or damaged. I would not be too worried about the ability of those with insurance to rebuild with these new construction requirements. As far as there no longer being danger, that is just not the case. They are in proximity to woodland and creating and maintaining defensible space around the home will always be important.

@scotttovey
@scotttovey 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kevin-mp5of "It doesn’t matter what you build with…. It’s the location, nothing can survive those fires……" It's not just about building to resist fire, it's managing the forest around the town to reduce the intensity of a fire that may arise in the future. All that heat did not come simply from the trees. The majority of fire fuel came from the underbrush that had not been cleaned away and managed over the past 40+ years. The more fuel you give a fire, the hotter it will burn. Minimize how much fuel a fire has, and you will be able to control the heat being generated from the fire. Given that they now have new growth around the town, if they manage that growth and insure that there are proper fire breaks to prevent a fire from spreading out of control, they can minimize the chances of Paradise burning down in the future.

"We live in a fire prone area, lets build our houses out of firewood!" Yeah, how this makes sense eludes me. Why not mandate that the outer walls and roof have to be brick, concrete or some other fire proof material? A 1 hour fire rating means you can resist a normal fire for 1 hour. In a firestorm you'd be lucky to last for, maybe, 5 minutes. Also each house should have to be close to a communal 12 hour rated fire shelter where you can survive with your neighbours until the fire has burned itself out. These types of catastrophes are going to become more common not less, why not plan for the future?
@MandoFettOG

I don't think the government should be telling private citizens how they should build their house. Especially to this degree. Having some basic fire codes makes sense. You're talking about pricing people out of being able to afford a home.

@EMBer3000 3 жыл бұрын
@@MandoFettOG OK, but if government doesn't get to say how you build your house they shouldn't support your insurance either, this would almost guarantee that any disaster would wipe out your insurance company and ensure that you would receive much less than you need to rebuild.

If you'll notice, they took time to discuss the 1-hour rated outer sheathing assembly. Concrete and masonry materials might add another hour to that, but veneers would probably have to be employed. California is earthquake country and a wood-frame structure properly anchored and sheathed is going to perform very well in an earthquake.

Using the OSB wood product over a fireproof material is only good for one-hour exit but will ultimately ignite and fuel a wildfire that reaches it. This is why CA & builders are contributing causes of these massive fires. Builders, architects, trades, designers & homeowners should be REQUIRED to apply cement fiber board like Hardie boards over a cement board product like used in baths & under tiles. Fireproofed metal roofing is useless if an allowed siding is combustible even though it has a ‘one-hour fire rating’.

They do not live in a desert. The western side of the Sierra Nevada receives dramatic amounts of snowfall and water runoff each season. This region does not meet the requirements for a desert by any metric. Your ethics might call you to live in the city and do what you can to minimize your environmental footprint in ways you think are best as a citizen of the world. Just don't put that on the people of Paradise who value a more rural community in the mountains.
